Obama is a warlord, not the Nobel Peace Prize lie we are told. As insane as it might sound, the United States may soon be getting involved in another war in the Middle East. According to White House spokesman Jay Carney, "no options" have been taken off the table when it comes to the situation in Libya. By saying that "all options" are being considered, that is basically a way for the Obama administration to threaten Gadhafi without actually coming right out and threatening him. In recent days, news reports have been appearing all over the mainstream media hyping the possibility that we may have to take military action in Libya. This would not be happening if the White House did not want it to happen. The truth is that Barack Obama is apparently seriously considering U.S. military action in Libya. At first that would probably consist of air strikes and missile attacks, but if the Obama administration decides that it is going to take ground forces to get the job done then we could eventually see the U.S. military actually invade Libya. But the truth is that any military intervention in Libya would be a really, really bad idea. Is it really wise to stick our young men and women into the middle of an incredibly bloody civil war? Do we want to spill even more American blood in order to protect "U.S. interests"? Do we really want to spend young American lives to keep the price of oil low? The truth is that the world hates us enough already. How much more will they hate us if we decide to start bombing Libya into oblivion?All kinds of justifications are already being floated for potential military action in Libya. Barack Obama is publicly declaring that the killing of civilians in Libya has got to stop. As if the U.S. government cares so much about the deaths of civilians. Millions upon millions of Africans have been slaughtered in Africa over the last couple of decades in numerous civil wars and we have not intervened.So why now?Well, because oil is at stake.If Libya did not produce about 2 percent of the world's oil nobody in the U.S. government would really care much about what is going on in Libya.But because Libya is Africa's largest oil producer suddenly the death of their civilians becomes a matter of "international concern."Another reason being floated for taking military action in Libya is the "weapons of mass destruction" that Gadhafi supposedly has.A recent article in the Wall Street Journal went on and on about how concerned the U.S. government is about the "weapons of mass destruction" that are still under Gadhafi's control....The government of Col. Moammar Gadhafi hasn't destroyed significant stockpiles of mustard gas and other chemical-weapons agents, raising fears in Washington about what could happen to them -- and whether they may be used -- as Libya slides further into chaos.The Wall Street Journal article also stated that U.S. officials believe that Gadhafi possesses "1,000 metric tons of uranium yellowcake" which they believe are a serious threat to the international community.Doesn't that sound exactly like something we have all been told before?The truth is that so much of what we are seeing in the mainstream news right now are "trail balloons" that are being floated by the U.S. government.They want to see how the American people and the rest of the world are going to respond.The American people are being mentally prepared for potential U.S. military action against Libya...... With names like the Cafe Venizia, Mundo, and Hot Hot Coffee, the espresso bars on seemingly every block of Benghazi are a pleasant legacy of Italy's otherwise largely brutal occupation of Libya in the 1930's. Another is the string of neo-baroque municipal buildings, art-deco cinemas and shopping arcades that the Italian city planners linked up to the old Ottoman-era town with a series of avenues and squares. Independence in 1951 and the oil boom in the 1970's left their own marks on Benghazi, in the form of surprisingly stylish renditions of the architectural fads of the day, Brutalist banks and International Style hotels. And though most of this huge country is desert, Benghazi is surrounded by green hills, white beaches, and blue waters. Under the influence of a few too many cappuccini — alcohol is banned in Libya — it's easy to imagine some glossy travel magazine of the era branding this stretch of North Africa as the Libyan Riviera.
But the sober reality is that Benghazi, now a symbol of resistance to the rule of Colonel Mummar Gaddafi, is also a symbol of that dictator's abuse, megalomania, and incompetence. The once beautiful downtown is a skeleton of its former self, with monuments surrounded by scaffolding that never comes down, empty office buildings, and decrepit apartment blocks. Outside of downtown, the pavement stops just off the highway, and dirt streets fill with rotting garbage. The city of one million has one sewage treatment plant, built more than 40 years ago. Waste is just flushed into the ground or the sea, and when the water table rises in winter, the streets become open cesspools. Benghazi, the second largest city in a country with vast oil wealth and a tiny population, is rotting in its own fifth. "Why do we have to live like this?" says, Rafiq Marrakis, a professor of architecture and urban planning at Benghazi's Garyounis University, Libya's oldest, who took TIME on a tour of Benghazi's sad decline. "There's no planning, no infrastructure, no society. Gaddafi has billions and billions in banks all over the world. But he's left us here with nothing."

Most Libyans suffered under Gaddafi's capricious rule. His support for radical leftist militant groups in Europe and the Middle East sparked international sanctions that lasted until 2006, when Libya formally ended its weapons of mass destruction programs in exchange for international rehabilitation. His economic policies — laid out in his famous Green Book, which purports to chart a third way between Communism and liberal democracy but in fact cloaked an autocracy with a thousand toothless committees — were just as destructive. Gaddafi banned much private enterprise and turned over property from landlords to their tenants. While this benefited Libya's underclass in the short term, it meant that there has been almost no investment in maintaining the country's housing stock. "All of this is collapsing on the inside," says Marrakis, pointing to apartment buildings along Gamal Abdel Nasser street, once among the city's most prestigious addresses, now more reminiscent of Soviet bloc eastern Europe than of the breezy Mediterranean. "There is a severe, chronic housing shortage," he continues. "Young people can't own their own homes, can't get married, can't start their lives."

Benghazi felt the particular brunt of Gaddaffi's neglect, in part because the city has a history of defiance to central rule from the capital, in Tripoli. (Ironically, the uprising of military officers that brought Qaddaffi to power in 1969 began in Benghazi.) Gaddafi leveled the old bazaar, the heart of the Arab city and the center of civic life, and carved out a swath of prime real estate for an arsenal, parade ground and villa-studded pleasure dome for his elite security forces. And what social welfare projects the regime did undertake, such as a medical center with the pompously literal name "One Thousand Two Hundred Bed Hospital" became white elephants. "They've been building it for more than 40 years and it still isn't finished," says Marrakis. "Huge hospitals like this are obsolete now anyway. [But] all he cared about was his own glory."

The neglect of the city's infrastructure became one of the major reasons why Benghazi turned against the government. With the opening of the country since 2003, Libyans began to learn more about the outside world and realized that they were being shortchanged. The example of the rapid development of the Persian Gulf countries, particularly the Emirati city-sate of Dubai — which doesn't even have much oil wealth of its own — into world-class economies, was particularly galling. "How is it that they are in the desert, in harsh conditions, but have performed miracles, while we have a wonderful climate and all these resources and are going nowhere," says Marrakis. "[Meanwhile] the young people get YouTube and see how one of Gaddafi's sons spent a million dollars to have Beyoncé perform at his party."
In the last three years, the regime began realizing that its neglect of the city was reaching a crisis point, and the government brought in a slew of foreign construction companies with Chinese, Malaysian and Filipino workers to build badly planned suburban mega-tenements. "They realized they were running out of time," says Marrakis. But it was too little too late for the dispossessed young people — more than half of Libyans are under the age of 30 — who took to the streets on Feb. 17 and drove Gaddafi's forces out of Benghazi.

Now Marrakis and many of the other intelligensia who have formed a new provisional government are hoping that Free Libya will turn Benghazi into the tourist mecca that its geography and history could so easily make it. "I've been all over Europe and Asia and haven't seen beaches like we have here; Greek and Roman cities," says Marrakis, who once lived in Seattle and got his doctorate from the University of Washington. "We had a golden opportunity and Gaddafi squandered it. This time we will do it correctly."
Meanwhile, the city has a least one new attraction. The burned-out villas, fortresses, and jails of Gaddafi's pampered and brutal security services — conquered by Benghazi's street kids — where the city's families are now lining up to see for the first time how their overlords lived.

They way I see it they West went in big time into Libya, didn't allow any oil profits to trickle downm brought in their own labourers from managers to workers and now it has blown up in their face.
They are left with two choices bombing their own facilities so the Libyans dont use them or influencing the opposition to do their bidding by offerring them even more lucrative foreign oil deals.
Either which way Gaddafi will be thinking the same... So it looks we are in for a rough ride....

Fahad Ansari examines the dubious relationship between Libya and Great Britain during the 'war on terror years' and the subsequent criminalisation of anti-Gadaffi dissidents in the UK.
On 25 March 2004, Tony Blair travelled to Libya to meet Colonel Gaddafi in what was the first ever state visit by a British Prime Minister to the country. Despite Gaddafi’s brutal track record of oppressing his own people at home and sponsoring terrorism abroad, Blair felt that their common grievances against "al-Qaeda, extremists and terrorism" made friendship with Libya necessary for the purposes of security for both the Middle East, Britain and the wider world. Subsequent events would tragically show that the only people whose security was not considered and even mercilessly sacrificed was that of the Libyan people, both in Libya and the UK. From that day, opposing Gaddafi, peacefully or otherwise, would become a crime synonymous with terrorism.
The witch-hunt of Gaddafi opponents began on 2 October 2005 with the arrest and detention of five Libyan dissidents, who had been granted asylum by the UK, on the grounds that they were a threat to national security. The five men were on a list of 25 names given by Libya to the UK. The substantive accusations against them were that they were opposed to the Gaddafi regime. Deportation proceedings were commenced against them. One of the five men arrested, Ziyad Ali Hashem ('DD’), explained in an interview with Cageprisoners how when he first sought asylum in the UK in 2004, he was interviewed by MI5 at the airport who assured him that the UK was open to him for the purposes of engaging in dissident activity against the Libyan regime.
Less than two weeks later, on 13 October 2005, then Home Secretary Charles Clarke signed an Order proscribing a number of organisations around the world under the Terrorism Act 2000, including the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, an organisation which was dedicated to the overthrow of Gaddafi.
So why ban the LIFG? It has been accepted that they have never targeted civilians, either in Libya or abroad. On the contrary, they have a long history, since their founding in 1995, of clashing with the Libyan security forces, including assassination attempts on Gaddafi himself. By any definition of the word, they are courageous heroes striving to overthrow a tyrannical despot who has enslaved his population. But the world had changed. Any Muslim with a gun had become synonymous with Al Qaeda, irrespective of whether that gun was for self-defence or defence of the weak and oppressed. The LIFG and indeed anyone opposed to Gaddafi were now a threat to our security and had to be dealt with accordingly, even those who Britain had previously recognised as at risk of persecution in Libya.
Much of the problem had to do with the definition of terrorism itself under the Terrorism Act 2000 which includes any action designed to influence the policy of any government, anywhere in the world, including by, for example, damage to property. The main problem to which this gives rise is that the counter-terrorism measures are capable of application to speech or actions concerning resistance to an oppressive regime overseas. For example, the creation of the offence of encouragement of "terrorism" in 2005, under this definition criminalises any expression of a view that armed resistance to a brutal or repressive anti-democratic regime might in certain circumstances be justifiable, even where such resistance consists of campaigns of sabotage against property, and specifically directed away from human casualties. On 24 October 2005, ten days after proscribing LIFG, Charles Clarke gave evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights in which he defended the scope of the definition on the basis that "there is nowhere in the world today where violence can be justified as a means of bringing about political change."
The definition was upheld by the High Court as well in January 2007 when Mr Justice Mackay convicted one of the Libyan refugees arrested in October 2005 of possessing a blueprint for setting up an underground organisation in Libya to oppose Gaddafi. The judge held that the defendant could not plan, from England, the overthrow of Gaddafi: all he and other Libyan exiles could do was to urge the UK Government to take action to invade or otherwise attack the regime, which is also problematic, as it could lead to a conviction for the crime of "encouragement of terrorism" under the Terrorism Act 2006.
Two months after the LIFG was proscribed, three Libyan refugees were arrested and for belonging to and funding the LIFG. One of the men, Ismail Kamoka, had been released almost two years earlier after having been detained without charge for 16 months. Despite that court noting that he admitted to being a member of LIFG, it did not regard that as being a threat to national security at that time. Two years later, Blair and Gaddafi had kissed and Kamoka was now a threat to our security. In June 2007, all three were convicted. Kamoka was sentenced to almost four years imprisonment. The sentencing judge recommended that all three men be deported to Libya upon the completion of their sentences.
The only difficulty in deporting these newly discovered terrorists was the fact that Gaddafi’s regime was known to brutally torture and abuse dissidents and there was a real risk of deportees such as these men being subjected to such abuse. Even the Foreign Office warned that it still had "serious concerns" about human rights under Gaddafi's regime, concerns which include "restrictions on political prisoners, arbitrary detention and conditions in Libyan prisons".
Time for another state visit to Tripoli
On 29 May 2006, Tony Blair again visited Libya, and on this occasion signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Gaddafi under the terms of which Gaddafi promised not to torture any terror suspects deported to Libya.
But Blair could not visit his Arab master empty handed and had to take some sacrificial lambs with him. For if Gaddafi was the mad dog, Blair was most certainly the loyal puppy. Five days before he travelled to meet Qaddafi, anti-terror police arrested a number of other Libyan dissidents who had been granted asylum in the UK.
These men included Abdul Baset Azzouz, a refugee from Libya, was arrested during a dawn raid on his home, during the course of which he sustained numerous blows to his head in front of his wife and young children. Azzouz was told that he was being arrested for immigration reasons on the basis that he posed a threat to national security. Using secret evidence, which he has never seen to this day, the government accused Azzouz of having contact with the LIFG. After nine months of being detained without trial, Azzouz was granted bail on health grounds due to his rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, depression and injured ligaments in his leg. The terms of Azzouz’s bail order effectively imprisoned him and his family to a small radius around their home, restricted from regularly joining his mosque congregation, and unable to mingle with his community.
In April 2008, the Court of Appeal upheld a SIAC ruling ruled that two other Libyan dissidents (Faraj Hassan and Ziyad Ali Hashem) could not be deported to Libya as there were substantial grounds for believing they would be subjected to torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment if returned. Tony Blair was exasperated at the original SIAC ruling: "In order to be able to give a strong signal that those people cannot get away with what they want to do, we have to be able to deport people and send them back to their own country."
Many of the detainees were subsequently released from prison as they could similarly not be deported to Libya but they were instead placed under suffocating control orders which virtually incarcerated them and their families in their own homes. One individual, 'AV’, appealed the decision to the High Court which quashed his control order when it found him not to be a threat to national security.
Over the next two years, the government finally revoked all deportation and control orders from the detainees, after they won their lengthy court battles proving their innocence.
This was the plight of the Libyans in the UK whose security and safety was sacrificed in the interests of realpolitik. For four years, their lives and the lives of their families were devastated as they were persecuted in the land that had offered them refuge, in order to please the agent of their persecution. As Andy Worthington poignantly said, "their only 'crime’ was to seek asylum as the wrong time".
Their identities, their backgrounds and the reasons for their punishment were deliberately hidden from the British public in order to further terrorise a people already petrified by this government through carefully manipulated politics of fear. Veiled behind anonymous initials, secret evidence and Kafka-esque courts, the government manipulated the Libyans’ cases to justify the erosion of civil liberties through the introduction of draconian anti-terror laws. These men were opponents of Gaddafi, a leader as much despised by the British public as by his own people. Had the British government left them alone to remove Gaddafi rather than persecute them, it would have saved this country millions of pounds, and more importantly, thousands of innocent Libyan lives.

In contrast with what is happening in Egypt and Tunisia, Libya occupies the first spot on the Human Development Index for Africa and it has the highest life expectancy on the continent. Education and health receive special attention from the State. The cultural level of its population is without a doubt the highest. Its problems are of a different sort. The population wasn’t lacking food and essential social services. The country needed an abundant foreign labour force to carry out ambitious plans for production and social development.
For that reason, it provided jobs for hundreds of thousands of workers from Egypt, Tunisia, China and other countries. It had enormous incomes and reserves in convertible currencies deposited in the banks of the wealthy countries from which they acquired consumer goods and even sophisticated weapons that were supplied exactly by the same countries that today want to invade it in the name of human rights.
The colossal campaign of lies, unleashed by the mass media, resulted in great confusion in world public opinion. Some time will go by before we can reconstruct what has really happened in Libya, and we can separate the true facts from the false ones that have been spread.
Serious and prestigious broadcasting companies such as Telesur, saw themselves with the obligation to send reporters and cameramen to the activities of one group and those on the opposing side, so that they could inform about what was really happening.
Communications were blocked, honest diplomatic officials were risking their lives going through neighbourhoods and observing activities, day and night, in order to inform about what was going on. The empire and its main allies used the most sophisticated media to divulge information about the events, among which one had to deduce the shreds of the truth.
Without any doubt, the faces of the young people who were protesting in Benghazi, men, and women wearing the veil or without the veil, were expressing genuine indignation.
One is able to see the influence that the tribal component still exercises on that Arab country, despite the Muslim faith that 95% of its population sincerely shares.
Imperialism and NATO – seriously concerned by the revolutionary wave unleashed in the Arab world, where a large part of the oil is generated that sustains the consumer economy of the developed and rich countries – could not help but take advantage of the internal conflict arising in Libya so that they could promote military intervention. The statements made by the United States administration right from the first instant were categorical in that sense.
The circumstances could not be more propitious. In the November elections, the Republican right-wing struck a resounding blow on President Obama, an expert in rhetoric.
The fascist “mission accomplished” group, now backed ideologically by the extremists of the Tea Party, reduced the possibilities of the current president to a merely decorative role in which even his health program and the dubious economic recovery were in danger as a result of the budget deficit and the uncontrollable growth of the public debt which were breaking all historical records.
In spite of the flood of lies and the confusion that was created, the US could not drag China and the Russian Federation to the approval by the Security Council for a military intervention in Libya, even though it managed to obtain however, in the Human Rights Council, approval of the objectives it was seeking at that moment. In regards to a military intervention, the Secretary of State stated in words that admit not the slightest doubt: “no option is being ruled out”.
The real fact is that Libya is now wrapped up in a civil war, as we had foreseen, and the United Nations could do nothing to avoid it, other than its own Secretary General sprinkling the fire with a goodly dose of fuel.
The problem that perhaps the actors were not imagining is that the very leaders of the rebellion were bursting into the complicated matter declaring that they were rejecting all foreign military intervention.
Various news agencies informed that Abdelhafiz Ghoga, spokesperson for the Committee of the Revolution stated on Monday the 28th that “‘The rest of Libya shall be liberated by the Libyan people’”.
“We are counting on the army to liberate Tripoli’ assured Ghoga during the announcement of the formation of a ‘National Council’ to represent the cities of the country in the hands of the insurrection.”
“‘What we want is intelligence information, but in no case that our sovereignty is affected in the air, on land or on the seas’, he added during an encounter with journalists in this city located 1000 kilometres to the east of Tripoli.”
“The intransigence of the people responsible for the opposition on national sovereignty was reflecting the opinion being spontaneously manifested by many Libyan citizens to the international press in Benghazi”, informed a dispatch of the AFP agency this past Monday.
That same day, a political sciences professor at the University of Benghazi, Abeir Imneina, stated:
“There is very strong national feeling in Libya.”
“‘Furthermore, the example of Iraq strikes fear in the Arab world as a whole’, she underlined, in reference to the American invasion of 2003 that was supposed to bring democracy to that country and then, by contagion, to the region as a whole, a hypothesis totally belied by the facts.”
The professor goes on:
“‘We know what happened in Iraq, it’s that it is fully unstable and we really don’t want to follow the same path. We don’t want the Americans to come to have to go crying to Gaddafi’, this expert continued.”
“But according to Abeir Imneina, ‘there also exists the feeling that this is our revolution, and that it is we who have to make it’.”
A few hours after this dispatch was printed, two of the main press bodies of the United States, The New York Times and The Washington Post, hastened to offer new versions on the subject; the DPA agency informs on this on the following day, March the first: “The Libyan opposition could request that the West bomb from the air strategic positions of the forces loyal to President Muamar al Gaddafi, the US press informed today.”
“The subject is being discussed inside the Libyan Revolutionary Council, ‘The New York Times’ and ‘The Washington Post’ specified in their online versions.”
“‘The New York Times’ notes that these discussions reveal the growing frustration of the rebel leaders in the face of the possibility that Gaddafi should retake power”.
“In the event that air actions are carried out within the United Nations framework, these would not imply international intervention, explained the council’s spokesperson, quoted by The New York Times”.
“The council is made up of lawyers, academics, judges and prominent members of Libyan society.”
The dispatch states:
“‘The Washington Post’ quoted rebels acknowledging that, without Western backing, combat with the forces loyal to Gaddafi could last a long time and cost many human lives.”
It is noteworthy that in that regard, not one single worker, peasant or builder is mentioned, not anyone related to material production or any young student or combatant among those who take part in the demonstrations. Why the effort to present the rebels as prominent members of society demanding bombing by the US and NATO in order to kill Libyans?
Some day we shall know the truth, through persons such as the political sciences professor from the University of Benghazi who, with such eloquence, tells of the terrible experience that killed, destroyed homes, left millions of persons in Iraq without jobs or forced them to emigrate.
Today on Wednesday, the second of March, the EFE Agency presents the well-known rebel spokesperson making statements that, in my opinion, affirm and at the same time contradict those made on Monday: “Benghazi (Libya), March 2. The rebel Libyan leadership today asked the UN Security Council to launch an air attack ‘against the mercenaries’ of the Muamar el Gaddafi regime.”
“‘Our Army cannot launch attacks against the mercenaries, due to their defensive role’, stated the spokesperson for the rebels, Abdelhafiz Ghoga, at a press conference in Benghazi.”
“‘A strategic air attack is different from a foreign intervention which we reject’, emphasized the spokesperson for the opposition forces which at all times have shown themselves to be against a foreign military intervention in the Libyan conflict”.
Which one of the many imperialist wars would this look like?
The one in Spain in 1936? Mussolini’s against Ethiopia in 1935? George W. Bush’s against Iraq in the year 2003 or any other of the dozens of wars promoted by the United States against the peoples of the Americas, from the invasion of Mexico in 1846 to the invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982?
Without excluding, of course, the mercenary invasion of the Bay of Pigs, the dirty war and the blockade of our Homeland throughout 50 years, that will have another anniversary next April 16th.
In all those wars, like that of Vietnam which cost millions of lives, the most cynical justifications and measures prevailed.
For anyone harbouring any doubts, about the inevitable military intervention that shall occur in Libya, the AP news agency, which I consider to be well-informed, headlined a cable printed today which stated: “The NATO countries are drawing up a contingency plan taking as its model the flight exclusion zones established over the Balkans in the 1990s, in the event that the international community decides to impose an air embargo over Libya, diplomats said”.
Further on it concludes: “Officials, who were not able to give their names due to the delicate nature of the matter, indicated that the opinions being observed start with the flight exclusion zone that the western military alliance imposed over Bosnia in 1993 that had the mandate of the Security Council, and with the NATO bombing in Kosovo in 1999, THAT DID NOT HAVE IT”.
