Japan brings back memories of Europe's Chernobyl disaster. “My daughter was born that autumn [in 1986], and she suffered serious disabilities as a result,” said Karin Sager, a German affected by the Chernobyl disaster, in an interview with the BBC. “The message to Merkel has got to be: stop this now. If there's any kind of radioactive leak she'll be out straight away.” Nuclear power is a key issue for Germany's upcoming regional elections, so it's a small wonder why Merkel's popularity is falling.
Governments around Europe could see themselves in a similar sticky situation. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi aims for a quarter of the country's electricity to be generated from nuclear power, a possible concern given that Italy is at risk of a possible earthquake. Cooling the three reactors isn't the only problem. Cooling spent fuel stored in an adjacent spent-fuel pool at one troubled reactor could be an emerging issue, according to a TEPCO press release on March 13.
A particular feature of the 40-year old General Electric Mark 1 Boiling Water Reactor model – such as the six reactors at the Fukushima site – is that each reactor has a separate spent-fuel pool. These sit near the top of each reactor and adjacent to it, so that cranes can remove spent fuel from the reactor and deposit it in a swimming-pool-like concrete structure near the top of the reactor vessel, inside each reactor building. ... ... ...If the hydrogen explosions damaged those pools – or systems needed to keep them cool – they could become a big problem. Keeping spent-fuel pools cool is critical and could potentially be an even more severe problem than a reactor meltdown, some experts say. If water drains out, the spent fuel could produce a fire that would release vast amounts of radioactivity, nuclear experts and anti-nuclear activists warn.

...However, by Monday night there were reports that efforts to continue cooling Units 1 and 3 might be running into problems. The situation at those two reactors is currently unclear.
Unfortunately, reports on Unit 2 suggest the situation is more serious. After the cooling systems for this reactor failed over the weekend, workers were unable to fill the reactor vessel with sea water. This appears to have been caused in part by human error, and the plant owner, TEPCO, has stated that the fuel in the core of Unit 2 was completely uncovered for a matter of hours. This could lead to very serious melting of the fuel. If that condition continues long enough, it could lead to a total melting of the fuel, which is called a meltdown.
If that occurs, the molten fuel can drop to the bottom of the reactor vessel, burn through the reactor vessel, and drop onto the floor of the primary containment. There is currently no indication this has happened at Unit 2, but if they are unable to get cooling water into the reactor vessel it is likely only a matter of time until this happens. ...
They don't speculate on when the core hits the floor (despite the lessons from Chernobyl, no containment dishes on these old GE reactors, apparently).

Very grave censorship at Japanese newscast while the world fears the effects of the earthquake and tsunami on Fukushima power plant.
According to Pio D'Emilia, Sky Tg24 Italia correspondent in Japan, Japanese state-owned TV channel NHK has censored one of their own journalists when she reported that the workers at Tepco's Fukushima plant, where a fierce explosion blew up the building that contains the reactor, were fleeing the plant.
Technicians and workers allegedly refused to work at the reactor for fear of contamination. Immediately after the report during a live newscast, the anchorman of the Japanese TV station said: "this news report was not supposed to be read."
