Alsalam Alykum,
A group of humanitarian activists who have significant and practical experience in land convoys to Iraq, Gaza, and DarFor; are aiming to Libya this time. They are leaving London on Friday 11.11.11 and heading to Libya delivering Ambulances full of medical supply to frontlines, hospitals, clinics, communities, cities and wherever else there is a need. SLSW’s primary objective is humanitarian and our group has no political agenda.
The group is calling for individual, organisations and others to participate by buying Ambulances and arranging a driver and assistant driver as well as facilitating the transportation expenses.
Every Ambulance team will be covering their own costs but all convoyers will be benefiting from the discounted rate obtained by SLSW such as Ambulance dealers, insurance, breakdown, ferry, visa, tax, free fuel, accommodation, food, etc.
The average cost of a decent Ambulance (Ford or Mercedes 2003 onward) is around £4.5k and the expected transportation costs for an Ambulance and two drivers is about £1.5k. This means that £6k will cover everything. You might be able to get a cheap Ambulance but you may not be able to deliver it. Drivers who own their Ambulances will be allowed to donate those Ambulances to the organisation, clinic, hospital, city, frontline or any other entity they choose. SLSW will not have a say on this issue.

About the convoy
The idea came after receiving requests from different sources which were able to confirm that most of those foreign Ambulances have been seen as neutral vehicles whose only aim is to help injured people from both sides. Another statement said that those Ambulances can reach both parties with no risk to the driver or/and the medical team; additionally there is a need to transport injured people from Libya to Tunisia and Egypt that requires certain specifications to facilitate an easy trip.
The group will be responsible for the legislation and facilitation of all arrangements with regards to paperwork, permissions, etc. SLSW is the main coordinator of communication before, during and after the journey of this convoy.
SLSW will not accept any donations and can’t arrange, buy or facilitate the purchasing of Ambulances and suggest that donors work closely with each other to collectively purchase Ambulances and arrange for a driver and an assistant. Those Ambulances will be loaded with medical supply such as have been listed and requested by professional medical people based on their Libyan experiences on the ground, since February.
There is no registration fee to join us, and all administration is run on a voluntary basis. We will be able to direct you to our best achieved deals and it is up to the donors to decide where to buy from.
