21 year old Bangladeshi patsy?.
Quote: | The FBI has arrested a Bangladeshi man over an alleged plot to blow up the Federal Reserve in New York, just blocks away from the World Trade Centre site.
Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, was arrested on Wednesday morning after a sting operation that involved the FBI and the New York Police Department.
The suspect allegedly parked a van filled with what he believed were explosives outside the building and tried to detonate it in a suicide mission.
Earlier in the day, he went to a warehouse and assembled what he believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb using inert explosives provided by federal agents.
He also recorded a videotaped statement in which he said: "We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom," federal prosecutors said.
Authorities said Nafis proposed several locations for his attack, including the New York Stock Exchange.
In a written letter taking responsibility for the Federal Reserve job he was about to carry out, he said he wanted to "destroy America".
Nafis also reported having overseas connections to al Qaida, and travelled to the US in January to carry out an attack, according to a complaint filed in federal court in Brooklyn.
He was trying to recruit people, but one was a secret FBI source.
The arrest has been confirmed by the FBI, which released a statement about its investigation on Wednesday.
"Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure," Mary Galligan, the FBI's acting assistant director, said in the statement.
"The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences. It is important to emphasize that the public was never at risk in this case, because two of the defendant's 'accomplices' were actually an FBI source and an FBI undercover agent.
"The FBI continues to place the highest priority on preventing acts of terrorism."
Nafis is awaiting a federal court hearing today, where he is facing a charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support for al Qaida. |
