Britain's ‘humanitarian’ missions for African women and Syrian children

Propaganda alert

compiled by Cem Ertür

29 March 2013

Having kept a low profile on the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, the British government launched two ‘humanitarian’ campaigns in an effort to disguise its genocidal wars in the Middle East and Africa. On the day Britain deployed troops to Mali, British Foreign Minister William Hague and United Nations goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie went on an “anti-rape mission” in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The following day, British Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife Samantha Cameron visited Syrian refugee children in Lebanon as an ambassador for the British aid organisation Save the Children.

(title of the print edition)

by James Meikle, The Guardian, 28 March 2013

[British Prime Minister David Cameron's wife] Samantha Cameron has spoken of the "harrowing stories" she heard from children who had fled Syria as refugees.

She warned that childhoods were "being smashed to pieces" by the conflict after visiting families now said to be living in flimsy makeshift shelters in Lebanon's Bekaa valley.

Cameron, an ambassador for Save the Children, was helping to draw attention and funds to the charity's work, as she met mothers and children who had witnessed relatives dying in the brutal civil war.

"As a mother, it is horrifying to hear the harrowing stories from the children I met today. No child should ever experience what they have," Cameron said on Wednesday. "With every day that passes, more children and parents are being killed, more innocent childhoods are being smashed to pieces." [...]

Justin Forsyth (*), chief executive of Save the Children, who accompanied Cameron, said: "Without more help, and quickly, we risk losing a generation of Syria's children."

(*) Justin Forsyth served as Special Advisor on International Development (2004-2008) and then as Director of Communications and Strategy (2008-2010) under the Labour governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In July 2012, he became the chief executive of Save the Children.

excerpts from: William Hague and Angelina Jolie to highlight problem of warzone rape on visit to Africa

by Emma Clark, The Independent, 25 March 2013

[British] Foreign secretary William Hague will travel with Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie to Africa this week to raise awareness of warzone rape.

Mr Hague and Jolie, a United Nations special envoy, will meet survivors of rape and sexual violence during their visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, the [British] Foreign Office said. The pair intend to call on all governments to help eradicate sexual violence in conflicts when they meet local political leaders. [...]

Mr Hague said: "Rape is often used as a weapon of war in conflict zones around the world. It destroys people's lives and communities in the most horrific manner imaginable. Yet more often than not the international community looks away, the perpetrators of these brutal crimes walk free and the cycle of injustice and conflict is repeated. We have to shatter this culture of impunity."
