A part from one of the commercial planes that was flown into the Twin Towers on 9/11 has been found between two buildings, police say.

New York Police Department Spokesman Paul Browne said the piece of landing gear, discovered on Wednesday wedged between a mosque site and another lower Manhattan building, has a clearly legible Boeing identification number.

The twisted and rusted equipment features cables, levers and giant bolts. It measures 5ft high, 3ft wide and 1.5ft deep.

"The odds of this being wedged between there is amazing. It had to have fallen just the right way to make it into that space," Browne said.

He added that other wreckage has been found nearby in the years since the terrorist attack.

The part was found by surveyors who had been hired to inspect the site of a planned Islamic community centre at 51 Park Place, about three blocks from ground zero.

The surveyors spotted the debris as they looked down between the buildings from the roof, quickly called 911, and the scene was secured and police documented the findings with photographs, Mr Browne said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and police will work to determine whether the wreckage belongs to American Airlines Flight 11, which struck the North Tower, or to United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the South Tower. Both planes were Boeings.

Police are awaiting a determination from a medical examiner on whether to sift the soil around the building to search for human remains.

The medical examiner's office is in the middle of a 10-week sifting operation as it attempts to identify additional human remains in debris unearthed at the World Trade Center site during construction of a new skyscraper.

If the landing gear's origin is authenticated, it would mean it sat undisturbed for nearly a dozen years.

Patricia Riley, the sister of 9/11 victim Lorraine Riley, called the discovery "very strange."

"Twelve years later we are still finding remnants of the attack on our country," she said.

"For years to come we'll continue to find things that we didn't see before. Hopefully, they'll serve as a reminder that we have to stay vigilant."

More than 2,750 people were killed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked the two commercial passenger planes and flew them into the upper floors of the Twin Towers, then the tallest buildings in the world.

Hijackers also took over two other planes that day, crashing one into the Pentagon in Washington DC.

The fourth plane went down in a field in rural Pennsylvania.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/04/26/debris-from-911-plane-found-near -site-of-proposed-ground-zero-mosque/

Quote:
A 5-foot long piece of debris believed to be from one of the planes involved in the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 was found wedged between two nearby buildings, including the site of a proposed mosque and community center that was slammed by conservatives.

WNBC-TV reported that the piece of landing gear, which bears a stamp from the parts manufacturer Boeing and a serial number, was found while surveyers were inspecting the back of the building at 51 Park Place, which was where the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” was proposed for construction. The debris was wedged between the rear of the Park Place building and a building at 50 Murray St.

New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the department had secured the area “as if it were a crime scene” and begun examining it while the local Medical Examiner’s office did a health and safety inspection.

“They’re probably, I’m gonna say, feet apart,” Browne said of the two buildings in an interview with WCBS-AM. “You could step across the state. But the aircraft landing gear part of it is significant in size – maybe 3 x 5 feet, something like that, so it has to accomodate something that big. But it’s not like a large backyard type of space. It’s relatively narrow, and because it’s wedged, it didn’t go down to the ground. It would explain why it escaped attention for more than a decade.”

The site at Park Place, originally proposed as a community center in 2010, was targeted by conservatives who called it the “second wave” of the 9/11 attacks, a line of attack rejected by the developer, Sharif El-Gamal.

“It is not a mosque, nor is it on Ground Zero,” he wrote in a newspaper column in April 2011. “Park51, which is the name of the project, is first and foremost an Islamic community center, modeled after the Jewish Community Center on the upper West Side. When completed, the center will contain a gym, a pool, a pre-K, a daycare facility, an amphitheater, a culinary institute, a 9/11 memorial and more. There will be a separate prayer space for the Muslim community living and working downtown.”

A September 2010 survey found that 80 percent of New Yorkers agreed that there was a legal right for the center to be built, though 67 percent of respondents felt it should be moved away from the site of the attack

Not the BBC apparently

Quote:
Broken pulley

Mr Kelly told reporters after inspecting it that a length of rope was looped around the piece of steel and that no marks were visible on the walls overhead.

What appears to be the remains of a broken pulley can be seen with the wreckage and the New York Times reports that Mr Kelly did not completely exclude the idea that the aircraft debris may have been lowered into the gap.

so this supposed piece of plane managed to neatly fall and wedge itself in place without damaging the top roof edge of both buildings which would be inspected regulary if air conditioning and other plant were located on the roof. ?

Good story to bring back the 9/11 details onto front pages just in case we were forgetting and having our minds focusing on home grown Boston bombings.

Cant wait to see what Boeing come up with on the part serial number

'Commercial airliner'?
Surely they mean 'Military 767'?

Check ANY serial numbers
they will be tracable to the exact aircraft
Civil or military?
Let's see

A piece of wreckage believed to be from a plane hijacked on 9/11 is now thought to be a piece of a wing and not part of the aircraft's landing gear as initially thought, authorities say.

The part was discovered last week wedged in a narrow gap between two buildings in lower Manhattan, and is likely a trailing edge flap support structure from a Boeing 767 plane.

It was first thought to have been part of a plane's landing gear because both pieces feature similar hydraulic systems. The part secures the wing flaps that help regulate plane speed.

The twisted and rusted equipment features cables, levers and giant bolts. It measures 5ft high, 3ft wide and 1.5ft deep.

No mention of the rope that tied around it. I don't know about you but if I flew on a plane that required rope in its moving parts, I'd be a bit worried... Rolling Eyes

The number - BOEING CSTG 65B84045 - is a casting number so it isn't specific to one particular plane, Alan Lery of Turbo Resources International, Inc., an Arizona aircraft parts reseller, told the Post.

'Sometimes the airlines track every single part number that comes with the plane, but not likely this, he said.

Chuck Horning of Embry-Riddle Aviation University in Florida, also told the Post that the number cannot be traced.

'I would think that it will be difficult to determine specifically which aircraft the assembly came from,' Horning said.

'Being that both aircraft [in the World Trade Center attacks] were B767-200, they both likely had components with the same casting number,' he added.

It is unclear which of the two planes the new-found part belonged to, as both were Boeing aircrafts.

I didn't know one of the engines was on display in Washington until 2012... where is the Truth community when you need them! Rolling Eyes

Just a thought for what its worth:

I remember last time I worked in industry it was all becoming under BS 5750 and the new equivalent at the time, ISO 9000 (I think,) quality control and tractability which was all founded on the "aircraft industry" both here and over the pond.

So like Tony said, I would have thought it should be traceable, or at least from the individual aircraft itinerary for failure tractability etc. (edit) and service time.

So I just had a quick look at one commercial supplier:

Quote:

Our Quality Commitment

Being an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, AEROSUP is dedicated to render quality products and service that follows the company policies and processes in every aspect of its operations.

Aerosup Avionics is a Certified FAA 145 Repair Station complying with most stringent air agency quality requirements.

We aim to meet and exceed our internal quality measures and our external customer expectations through continuous quality improvement. We follow strict and rigorous quality standards in every aspect of our operations. At AEROSUP safety and accountability is always placed above all.

AVIATION INVENTORY LIQUIDATION
We buy your surplus commercial aircraft Parts

We can help you turn your surplus aviation parts and components into cash quickly. Aerosup purchases properly documented and traceable aircraft parts for its own inventory in addition to assisting customers with fast liquidation of their excess commercial aviation parts and aircraft engines.

In addition to outright purchase of your surplus aviation parts inventory we also offer consignment services that would include advertising, promotions, representations and listings of you aviation products providing maximum return on your excess and slow moving aviation parts.

Another company:

Quote:

http://www.thunderbayaviation.com/article/about-thunder-bay-aviation-l td-141.asp
In our dealings with our current customers we recognized a need for newly manufactured parts and overhauled components. In 1996 we acquired our Manufacturing Approval and we targeted this as our next phase of expansion. To date in 2013 we have STC'ed, PDA'ed or PMA'ed a large number of parts for the de Havilland family of aircraft and we manufacture over 300 individual part numbers of parts, ground equipment and miscellaneous equipment for the DHC-6 Twin Otter, DHC-3 Otter & DHC-2 Beaver aircraft. In addition we now stock a large variety of replacement parts for the Twin Otter, with over 500 line items on our shelves.

I was trying to see if each part has its own unique number which this isn't conclusive.

But I do remember that when I was involved last in industry the individual part numbers also had the time and date to the second, for full tractability and unique number. Like you get with some to the second "industry food" and high speed production (packaging). So I would have thought these parts would too and considering they are not high speed production. (edit) and for in service time of individual part or assembly grouped parts.

Part numbers
Serial numbers
Batch numbers
Only Serial Numbers are tracebale to individual aircraft and it appears this is just a part number
Crash investigators can only do their job when they are certain of the exact aircraft which crashes.
If they trace the fault back to an individual part, say a door lock failing in mid air, even screws and cotter pins in that lock will all be tracable through batch numbers and all other aircraft with hardware as part of that batch are grounded and the parts replaced.

As part numbers change as often as they did on Ford Escorts with many popular airliners this part number may well be restricted to only one or two Boeing models and types or small span of build years.
Certainly worth checking to see if that fits with the 'official story' which it probably won't.
Another small smoking gun perhaps??

"Serial number" (new search) :

Quote:

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111110143042AACSPbJ

How spare parts for aircraft are identified?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters
All Consumables (grease, screws, nuts etc.) will have a part number, and batch number.

The batch number is traceable within the company to identify where the parts came from.

Rotables (parts that can be removed and sent for servicing/repair then fitted to any aircraft eligible) will have Part number, Serial number, Batch number, Time since new and Time since overhaul.
The part number and serial number are stamped on a data plate or the casing of the component.
Before the part can be fitted to an aircraft the data on the data plate must the same as is on the Form 1 (a document that specifies part number, serial number, where the last work was carried out and what was done to the component.) A paper tag/ document will also be attached to the component specifying again part number, serial number etc. It will also say the aircraft to be refitted to if it was removed for access etc otherwise it will just state time since overhaul time since new and batch numbers.

The final component type is Repairable. These are parts that are not lifed (rotables are lifed thus time since overhaul) Repairable items are normally the same as rotables with the exception of no serial number or time since overhaul/new. Repairables will also still have a Form 1.

Unserviceable items are tagged and boxed with Aircraft registration removed from, Part number, Serial number, place of removal (ie airport aircraft is at time of work) and details if know of why it has been removed ie. failed leak test, valve seized etc.

No part can be fitted to an aircraft without a form 1.

Experiance of hangar and line maintenance.

I'm not sure of what component type it is though. (edit)
