INTRODUCTION
When the U.S. and its allies launched the covert war on Syria in 2011, they were expecting that either Syria’s political establishment would collapse within a short duration or they would find a way to ignite an open war. As Syria’s leaders and people proved to be exceptionally resilient, increasingly more brutal means have been deployed to tear the country apart. Being at the forefront of this covert war in every respect, Turkey has been thoroughly complicit in monumental war crimes committed against the neighbouring people of Syria.
Turkey’s phony peace with its neighbours Syria (since December 2004) and Iran (since November 2008) came to an abrupt end in May 2011, when its central role in NATO’s covert war against Syria became evident. [3]
As for Turkey’s phony conflict with Israel, which began with the May 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla massacre, has also been fully exposed when Turkey overtly supported Israel’s blatant acts of military aggression against Syria in 2013. The repercussions of the May 2013 Reyhanli false-flag bombing attacks near Turkey’s border with Syria is the latest evidence of a deep crisis of legitimacy for the United States, Britain, Israel and Turkey; the four countries whose alliance has been dominating the political scene in the Middle East and beyond since 1990.
ISRAELI AIR ATTACKS ON DAMASCUS
As NATO’s international mercenary forces from 29 different countries started suffering heavy defeats against the Syrian Army, Israeli Air Forces came to their rescue by launching two separate air strikes in Syria, both of which were flagrant acts of war. [4] [5]
After the first Israeli air attack on Damascus on January 30th, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu made the following remarks [6]:
| Quote: | | “Why did the Syrian Army, which has been launching attacks on its own innocent civilian population for the past 22 months with jets from the air and with tanks and artillery fire from the ground, not retaliate against this Israeli operation? Why does Assad not even throw a pebble when the Israeli jets fly over his palace and violate the dignity of his country? Why is Assad, who gives an order to fire Scud [missiles] at Aleppo, not doing anything against Israel? Is there a secret pact between Assad and Israel? [...] The Assad administration knows only to abuse. Why doesn’t he use against Israel, [a country] which they have regarded as an enemy since its foundation, the same force that he uses against defenceless women ? ” [7] |
On May 5th, UN human rights investigator Carla del Ponte announced the findings of the United Nations independent commission of inquiry on Syria:
| Quote: | | “According to the testimonies we have gathered, the rebels have used chemical weapons [in Syria], making use of sarin gas.” [8] |
The same day, Israel launched another air attack on Damascus. [9] In response to this second act of war by Israel against Syria, Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, lashed out at Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad for war crimes that were actually perpetrated by NATO’s international mercenary forces in Syria [10] :
| Quote: | “The scenes in [the Syrian town of] Baniyas are as tragic as those in Karbala [in AD 680] and the murderers are at least as despicable as Yazid [...] [who killed] our beloved Prophet’s beautiful grandchildren Hassan and Hussein [...]
Those organisations which are lending support to the illegal regime of Syria, those countries which are backing the illegal regime of Syria, the United Nations and the [U.N.] Security Council in particular, will not be able to exonerate themselves of this sin. Those who ignore this massacre, this inhumane scene in the name of sectarian solidarity, in the name of [political] conjuncture or in the name of international [political] interests will not be able to exonerate themselves of this major sin. [...]
I need to point this out as well: Israel’s air attack on Damascus is certainly not acceptable either. No reason, no excuse can justify this operation. Such attacks serve as trump cards, golden opportunities offered to the Syrian regime. In fact, by using Israel’s attack as an excuse, Assad engages in an effort to cover up the genocide in Baniyas. [However] , even this Israeli operation will not be able to save Assad who does not shed a drop of sweat, let alone a drop of blood for the Golan [Heights] .” [11] |
Four days after the second Israeli air attack on Damascus and United Nations’ statement on the mercenaries’ use of chemical weapons in Syria, Mr Erdogan gave an interview to the U.S. television channel NBC, where he said that if the U.S. were to launch a ground military invasion of Syria, then Turkey would support it. [12] However, as this statement amounted to a de facto declaration of war on Syria, it has been instantly censored by the NBC and the Prime Minister’s office issued a press release which denied it. [13] Here are excerpts from the edited version of this interview:
| Quote: | “ERDOGAN: It is clear that the regime has used chemical weapons and missiles. They used about 200 missiles, according to our intelligence. There are different sizes missiles. And then there are deaths caused by these missiles. And there are burns, you know, serious burns and chemical reactions. And there are patients who are brought to our hospitals who were wounded by these chemical weapons. You can see who is affected by chemical missiles by their burns. [14]
NBC: So has President Assad crossed President Obama’s red line?
ERDOGAN: A long time ago. My question is, the United Nations, U.N. Security Council, are you doing what you are supposed to do? Why do you exist in the first place? What is your job? I mean, is there a deadline, like they are not going to move until 1 million people are killed?
NBC: Will you encourage President Obama to get involved directly in the situation in Syria?
ERDOGAN: We want the United States to assume more responsibilities and take further steps.
NBC: What is the just punishment for Mr. Assad, in your view? What is your message to him today, at this moment in history?
ERDOGAN: Well, I am saying that he should leave Syria immediately. Sooner or later, the opposition are going to get him. And I hope that his end does not be like Qadhafi’s.” [15] |
During the interview, Mr Erdogan also said that he plans to share the evidence of chemical weapons use in Syria with the U.S. President Barack Obama. [16] However, no evidence at all was presented by either Mr Erdogan or Mr Obama after their meeting in the following week on May 16th. [17]
The same day, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Davutoglu reiterated the last Anglo-American propaganda argument before the launch of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, by making a reference to the Iraqi Army’s mass murder of Iraqi Kurds in Halabja in 1988 [18] :
| Quote: | | “From now on, we will be carrying out these tests [for chemical weapon wounds] on every injured person coming [from Syria] so that no one could dare to commit a crime against humanity, like the one in Halabja, by using [chemical weapons] in Syria.” [19] |
The same day, the Associated Press reported the ongoing preparations at Turkey’s border with Syria:
| Quote: | | “Turkey had stationed a team of eight experts to screen injured Syrians at the frontier. They were manning a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense vehicle deployed at the main Cilvegozu border gate with Syria.” [20] |
Again on the same day, a news report entitled “Forensic medicine establishment proves that al-Assad has used chemical weapons” was published by Turkish newspaper Star:
| Quote: | | “It has been definitely determined that [Syrian President Bashar] Al-Asad has used chemical weapons against his own people. The Public Health Institute and the Ankara Forensic Medicine Establishment have found the substance “Ricin”, which in the world is found only in Iran, China, and Russia, in 13 wounded individuals coming from Syria. [...] It is stated that Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan will place the dossier before [US President Barack] Obama on his US visit [on May 16] . The affair emerged when 13 wounded Syrian oppositionists were brought on 29 April from Syria to the Reyhanli State Hospital. ” [21] |
All this evokes the war propaganda back in February 1998, when the Bill Clinton administration made an unsuccessful attempt to instigate a war with Iraq. According to an AFP report;
| Quote: | | “Turkish authorities have sent 60,000 gas masks to its southeast regions bordering Iraq to protect civilians from possible chemical and biological attacks by Iraqi forces, [Turkish] dailies Sabah and Yeni Yuzyil said Friday. The masks, sent by civil defence chiefs, are destined for civil servants working in the region bordering Iraq [...] . Southeast Turkey borders Iraq and the region is thought to be in a potentially dangerous position in case Iraq decides to use the chemical and biological weapons it is suspected of having.” [22] |
It is worth also mentioning two allegations made against Turkish Armed Forces’ use of chemical weapons in the past:
In August 2011, five members of parliament from Germany’s Die Linke party held a press conference to condemn the appointment of the current head of Turkish Armed Forces Necdet Ozel:
| Quote: | | “When [Necdet] Ozel was the General Commander of the Gendarmerie, he was not only responsible for the death, torture and violence in the Kurdish region [of Turkey] . In 1999, he ordered the use of chemical weapons against Kurdish guerrillas [near the Ballikaya Village in Silopi] .” [23] |
In October 2011, two months after Necdet Ozel’s appointment, 37 Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) guerrillas were killed in the Kazan Valley of the Hakkari province during an operation by the Turkish Armed Forces. The following month, a European delegation visited the Kazan Valley to investigate the allegations of chemical weapons use during this operation.
As the earlier quote from Turkish newspaper Star shows, the Reyhanli State Hospital near Turkey’s border with Syria was at the forefront of the chemical weapons propaganda over the April 29 incident. Two days after this press report, the same hospital was inundated with the victims of a far more devastating false-flag operation.
OFFICIAL REACTIONS TO REYHANLI BOMBING ATTACKS
On May 11, international media agencies reported that twin car bombs have killed at least 43 people and injured at least 100 in the Turkish town of Reyhanli, near the Syrian border. [25] Shortly after the bombing attacks, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc pointed the finger at Syria:
| Quote: | | “Our thoughts are that their Mukhabarat [Syria’s intelligence agency] and armed organisations are the usual suspects in planning and the carrying out of such devilish plans.” [25] |
Hours after the Reyhanli bombing attacks, the head of global military alliance NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen issued a press release:
| Quote: | | “I express full solidarity with the people and the authorities of our Ally Turkey.” [26] |
The following day, Turkey’s Interior Minister Muammer Guler held a press conference:
| Quote: | | “For the time being there is no evidence suggesting that al-Qaida was involved.” [27] |
This is a rather interesting comment considering that until 2012, when al-Qaeda’s role in NATO’s covert war on Syria became fully exposed, Turkey’s political authorities were quite at ease in holding al-Qaeda responsible for any atrocity committed in Turkey or abroad. That same day, Prime Minister Erdogan also accused Syria:
| Quote: | “These attacks betray the intention of a country on fire which is trying to drag Turkey into the same fire. These attacks, to put it bluntly, are the bloody Baath regime’s attempt to provide an opportunity to its collaborators. [...] These attacks aim to provoke those who live together in peace, in serenity, in fraternity, particularly in Hatay. Most importantly, these attacks target Turkey which has resolved its terror issue, reinforced fraternity, put an end to mothers’ tears. [...]
Even if Turkey were to remain silent, stand idly by in the face of the tragedy in Syria, these traps would still have been set up, Turkey would still have been targeted. Those who criticise Turkey’s policy on Syria in the wake of these attacks with utter brazenness, a sheer lack of common sense and pure opportunism exhibit ignorance and an absence of policy. These attacks do not target our policy on Syria, they target our fraternity, our stability, our growth.” [28] |
The next day, Mr Erdogan spoke even more categorically:
| Quote: | | “This incident is definitely connected to the [Syrian] regime. The [Syrian] regime is behind this incident. That is evident.” [29] |
Syria’s Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi responded to Mr Erdogan’s accusations in full force:
| Quote: |
“The real terrorist is the government of Turkey under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It opened Turkey’s border with Syria to the terrorists. [Turkey] became a hub of international jihadi terrorism. It unleashed these terrorists on Turkish people’s houses and fields. It hosted terrorists coming from all over the world. Without any consideration, it provided them with all types of arms, bombs and explosive devices so that they could massacre people of Syria. Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his interior and foreign ministers bear a political and moral responsibility towards all the people of the world in general and the people of Syria and their own people in particular. [...]
The sole responsibility for the bombing attacks in Reyhanli lies with Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. These [attacks] couldn’t have been perpetrated by Syria. Despite all the things they did to the people and army of Syria for such a long time, neither our decency, nor our ethics, nor our policy would allow us to do something like this. [...]
No one has got the right to accuse others. Shortly after [the attacks] , Turkey’s Interior Minister [Muammer Guler] has said that they suspect that [the attacks] were connected to Syria. To put it plainly, the reason why he came up with such quick accusations without any evidence at hand, is to fabricate the evidence they had in mind. These [attacks] were directly perpetrated by Erdogan and the AKP. They are the ones who, through their intelligence and security forces, supplied Al Qaida with chemical and got them to penetrate all the way to Aleppo. They are the ones who transported terrorists, arms and deaths through their planes. Erdogan himself and his party want to destroy Syria. What occurred in Reyhanli was the ambition of destroying Syria itself. Whoever wants death and massacre is the one who carried out this massacre in Turkey.
When bombs explode in Turkey, we know why these bombs have been made to explode. The whole world knows why the bombs are exploding in Syria. But why in Turkey and why now? And why particularly before Erdogan’s meeting with Obama? Erdogan wants to get the United States into action. And then he will say ‘I am a member of NATO, Syria is attacking me’. In fact, in his latest statement, he said ‘we are capable of making war with Syria’. [...] Turkey’s Foreign Minister [Davutoglu] said yesterday that Turkey is strong enough to defend itself. Against whom is it going to defend itself ? Who actually poses a threat to Turkey ? ” [30] |
Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah’s statement was equally straightforward:
| Quote: | | “These terrorist bombings came as part of a series of similar crimes that affect innocent people in several Arab and Islamic countries, which can only be made [by] criminal hands. It also bore the hallmarks of international intelligence agencies, aimed at destabilizing and creating discord and unrest in these countries.” [31] |
Two weeks later, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag targeted Hezbollah for its political and military support to Syria [32] :
| Quote: | | “ [Hezbollah] says that it stands by Assad. [...] From where does it draw its strength? Having sided with those who unleash death upon their fellow Muslim brothers [...] , [Hezbollah] has no right to draw strength from Islam and the Quran. The source of their strength would actually be the Satan who wants to pit Muslims against each other, who wants to have them slaughter each other. [...] Hezbollah should change its name to ‘Hezbol-satan’ [i.e. Party of Satan] . ” [33] |
DESTROYING THE EVIDENCE
On the day of the incident, which was a Saturday, the Government managed to get the local court of Reyhanli to issue a blanket censorship ban regarding the broadcasting of news about the bombing attacks in Reyhanli. According to this ban, only statements made by senior authorities and police reports would be allowed to be reported on the media and the internet:
| Quote: | | “Within the framework of the investigation concerning the blasts in Reyhanli district on 11.05.2013 [...] , broadcasting and displaying information concerning the site of the incident, concerning the dead and injured casualties of the incident and concerning the content of the incident on all types of audio-visual, written and visual media and the internet is banned according to Article 153 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.” [34] |
Actually, this blanket ban was mainly targeting the information flow through the Internet considering that Turkey’s mainstream media have been fully complicit in the Government’s constant war propaganda against Syria from April 2011. Nevertheless, the ban on the Internet proved to be somewhat ineffective in the face of an overwhelming sense of indignation towards to Government across the country.
Medical staff in the Hatay province, where Reyhanli is located, was ordered to “limit the death toll to 50”. Local authorities said they ‘were instructed not to give any statement to the press’. [35] Journalist Ferdi Ozmen revealed the actual figure by posting the number of deaths in seven local hospitals with a total of 177. He has been arrested for defying the blanket ban. [36]
Republican People’s Party (CHP) member of parliament Mevlut Dudu explains how the evidence was instantly destroyed after the incident:
| Quote: | | “The police officers refused us entry to the site of the attacks on the grounds that they are collecting evidence. Nevertheless, we did [manage] to enter and saw that no evidence was being collected. Quite on the contrary, they were destroying the evidence using heavy construction equipment.” [37] |
It transpired that none of the 73 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the town recorded the bombing attacks. Due to a “system error”, they had been out of order four days before the incident. Most of these 73 CCTV cameras were directly viewing the points where the bombing attacks occurred. [38]
CHP member of parliament Aytug Atici revealed that electricity was cut off just five minutes before the bombing attacks. [39] In fact, according to activist Hamide Yigit, cutting off the electricity was a strategy used by Turkey’s authorities in smuggling international mercenaries into Syria:
| Quote: | | “Electricity is cut off along the [Harbiye-Yayladagi] itinerary; everywhere, including streets and roads, becomes totally dark. Meanwhile, vehicles carrying military ammunition and armed groups to the border pass by. Once their passage is over, the electricity resumes. The local residents, who are prevented from witnessing this transport, are feeling deeply restless about it.” [40] |
On the day of the bombing attacks, the militants who wanted to cross from Syria into Turkey were guided towards the Cilvegozu border gate instead of their habitual point of entry in Reyhanli. [41]
A currently censored video which was posted on Youtube shortly after the bombing attacks was recorded from an angle which oversaw the site of the attacks. Arabic speaking “Free Syrian Army” militants are seen to be recording the blasts in jubilation, shouting “Allah-u Akbar” (God is great) and mentioning the location of the blasts and the date. [42]
Only two days before the bombing attacks in Reyhanli, ABC reported “a secret visit” by the former U.S. Ambassador to Syria (January-October 2011) Robert Ford, who is the mastermind of NATO’s covert war on Syria [43] :
| Quote: | | “A U.S. official confirmed [Robert] Ford’s secret visit, which occurred along the Turkey-Syria border. He briefly crossed into Syria to meet with opposition leaders before returning to Turkey.” [44] |
In fact, there is a long history of false-flag incidents occurring in Turkey ahead of almost every top level meeting between Turkey’s politicians and their U.S. or Israeli counterparts.
Of all the false-flag operations in Turkey, by far the most devastating was the bombing attacks on 15th and 20th November 2003, which targeted two synagogues, HSBC bank headquarters and the British Embassy in Istanbul, killing 57 people and wounding another 700. The attacks coincided with U.S. President George Bush’s meting with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London. [45]
Baki Yigit was on of the five people who were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in 2007 for their roles in these attacks. He was released from prison in 2010 and died in 2012 whilst fighting in Aleppo among the ranks of the Free Syrian Army. [46]
Furthermore, foreign intelligence agencies CIA (U.S.), Mossad (Israel), MI6 (Britain) and BND (Germany) have a very prominent presence across Turkey’s border region with Syria. Located some 100 km from Turkey’s border with Syria, NATO’s Incirlik Airbase is being used as the command centre for the covert war on Syria. [47]
PROTESTS AGAINST ERDOGAN’S GOVERNMENT
Immediately after the bombing attacks, spontaneous protests broke out in Reyhanli and in various parts of the Hatay province. Incensed protesters were chanting “Erdogan resign” Turkey’s military deployed a huge number of air and ground military reinforcements to Hatay and Reyhanli in order to prevent spontaneous protests in Reyhanli and other parts of the Hatay province turning into a full-scale uprising. [48] [49]
Even the Reyhanli State Hospital was under siege, where riot police, plain-clothes police officers and an armoured police vehicle were deployed. [50]
Nine months before the bombing attacks in Reyhanli, activist Hamide Yigit describes the state of mind of the people in the Hatay province where Reyhanli is located:
| Quote: | “The mendacity of the media in ‘marketing’ war to the people is seen more clearly from Hatay. From the very first day the incidents started in Syria, they have been aware and observe that the media is reporting lies. The people of Hatay have relatives in every city in Syria, they speak its language [i.e. Arabic] , watch its broadcasts, read its press, and even if none of that is the case, can inform themselves about any incident at the convenience of a phone call, they are furious towards the media for its distortion of the facts to such an extent. [...]
For the past seventeenth months, the people [of Hatay] have been living in fear of [the possibility that] a war, for which they can find no reason, might explode on their doorstep. Hatay’s economy is stagnating, its revenues have stopped, its bread has shrunk. Hatay has enjoyed harmonious fraternity among its diverse population up until the present day. However, [the Government] is trying to disrupt this by pitting groups against each other, by emphasising differences of identity [Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, etc.] , sectarian differences [Sunni, Alevi, etc.] . The people of Hatay are constantly hearing news of deaths and injuries from relatives [in Syria] and live in constant fear of hearing such news.
The worst of this is that Hatay is being used as the command centre for attacks launched on their brotherly, blood-related people of Syria and hosting those who are firing bullets at them… With the anger and sorrow this, what is being spoken on every street and household [in Hatay] is the following: ‘We refuse to endure this disgrace any longer. We don’t want to keep waiting for this catastrophe which is advancing rapidly and looms closer every day. The refugee camps should be immediately removed from Hatay and re-arranged in a way to prioritise a humanitarian function. The flow of weapons and ‘terrorists’ across the border [with Syria] must stop! " [40] |
In 2013, tensions between the local population of the Hatay province and the international mercenary forces have reached a peak. Numerous riots broke out between the Syrian refugees and Turkey’s security forces in the refugee camps in Hatay and other southern provinces of Turkey. [51] [52] According to the Government’s own figures, a total of 114,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey have returned to Syria. [53]
In fact, since last year, Hatay took the lead in protesting Turkey’s pro-imperialist policies against Syria. The particularly massive and vibrant demonstrations held last September were retaliated by draconian restrictions against the freedom to protest in Hatay. [54]
50,000 people took part in a peace demonstration in Antakya, near
Turkey’s border with Syria, on September 1st, 2012. The banner reads:
“Al-Qaida, CIA, Mossad. We don't want bloody murderers in our city”
Furthermore, regardless if it was a false-flag attack or an accident by NATO’s mercenary forces fighting in Syria, after every incident that occurred along the border with Syria which resulted in deaths in Turkey, the local people have protested against the Government.
Massive protests occurred spontaneously across Hatay on the day of the bombing attacks and demonstrations are being held across the country on a daily basis to denounce the Government’s responsibility for the attacks and its warmongering policies against Syria.
Large protests held by students from a number of universities in Ankara and Istanbul were suppressed in a particularly brutally manner by the riot police forces. In Istanbul, beyond its standard lavish use of pepper gas and pressurised cannon water, the riot police went so far as firing plastic bullets at a university campus. [55] [56]
On the weekend the bombing attacks occurred, during the singing of the national anthem to mourn the victims ahead of two separate football games in Istanbul, the fans of Besiktas and Fenerbahce teams started shouting “Government resign”. The company broadcasting the games censored this unexpected mass protest by muting the voice of the transmission. [57]
All these instances of spontaneous popular dissent highlight the conspicuous absence of a genuinely anti-imperialist stance among a wide range of the largely co-opted, misguided and divided opposition groups in Turkey.
A protest held in Reyhanli seven days after the bombing attacks became yet another scene of police brutality where a large amount of pepper gas was fired. [58]
Two weeks after the attacks, Reyhanli was under a state of military occupation during Prime Minister Erdogan's visit which was announced with 2 days’ notice. 5000 special forces troops, 5000 police officers, marksmen on the rooftops, 5 Skorsky helicopters, 20 thousand barriers and 50 tons of pepper gas have been deployed to Reyhanli. [59]
600 bus loads of Justice and Development Party (AKP) supporters from neighbouring districts and provinces as far away as Nigde (400 km), Syrian refugees who did not speak Turkish and workers who were threatened with dismissal for non-attendance by their employers were transported by the authorities to Reyhanli. They were lined up in front of Mr Erdogan in a military order in a manner reminiscent of the periods under military rule. Meanwhile, the local people were not allowed to go out of their homes. [60] [61]
Ten days before Mr Erdogan’s visit, government officials began distributing a significant amount of money to the local population of Reyhanli in an effort to buy off their silence. [62]
Likewise, during his fifteen-minute speech in Reyhanli, Mr Erdogan announced various financial incentives for the people of Reyhanli as well as promotion of Hatay to metropolitan municipality status in the next year. [63]
STANCE OF THE KURDISH OPPOSITION IN TURKEY
The day after the bombing attacks in Reyhanli, the co-chair of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), which is the only pro-Kurdish party in Turkey’s parliament, Mr Selahattin Demirtas rushed to Mr Erdogan’s rescue:
| Quote: | “The fact that the attacks took place at Reyhanli on the Syrian border brings instantly to one’s mind a Syrian connection of this matter. [...] [These attacks] could be interpreted as the extension of Syria’s civil war and internal chaos to Turkey. [...] Were [these attacks] connected to the ongoing resolution process [between the Government and the Kurdish opposition] in Turkey? It is hard to figure that out. What is clear is that the political atmosphere in which Turkey currently finds itself was the target.
Since the day the civil war began in Syria, we have been pointing out that the Government’s stance, its foreign policy is wrong. [...] However, particularly in the face of attacks perpetrated in this period against Turkey, attacks which target civilians, our citizens; our priority should be to act in unity instead of holding the Government responsible. [...] We will stand by the Government [in its efforts] to take precautions against these attacks, to adopt an attentive, sensitive stance towards these attacks.” [64] |
Mr Demirtas’ stance is all the more surprising considering the sheer number of false-flag operations of the past three decades which have targeted Kurdish politicians, activists and civilians in Turkey. At the end of April, four days after the PKK’s military leader Murat Karayilan announced the withdrawal of the PKK guerrillas from Turkey in line with a ceasefire agreement, The Times reported the transfer of over 1,500 guerrillas from Turkey into northern Syria to secure the Kurdish areas there. [65] In an interview held eleven days after the bombing attacks, Mr Demirtas spoke even more straightforwardly:
| Quote: | | “Three Kurdish states may come into being: A Kurdish state in Iran, a Kurdish state in Iraq, a Kurdish state in Syria. Now it is certain that there will be an autonomous region in Syria just like the one in Iraq. Of course, if the Kurdish entity in Syria incorporates Lattakia as well, a big problem for the Kurds would have been resolved. [Then] they would have access to the sea and a total dependence on Turkey would come to an end. [...] The Kurds are Turkey’s luck. There is a Kurdish buffer [separating Turkey from both Syria and Iraq] . If the central administration in Iraq persists in its current mentality, then the Kurdish state in Iraq may come into being as a fully independent [entity] .” [66] |
Nine days after the bombing attacks, the co-chair of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), which is another pro-Kurdish party in Turkey, Mr Ahmet Turk visited the United States. Following three consecutive meetings held at the U.S. State Department, Mr Turk spoke to the press:
| Quote: | “A Turkey that embraces its own Kurds, that wins the hearts and minds of its own Kurds will play a more effective role in the Middle East, will be an actor capable of bringing democracy to the Middle East. [67]
We need to bring into life the project of a Syria where all sorts of different [identities] could freely exist, could freely express themselves. [The U.S. officials] have very clearly stated that they see eye-to-eye with us on this matter.” [68] |
The ‘peace process’ with the Kurdish armed and political opposition in Turkey is actually a classic divide and rule strategy which aims to pacify the Kurdish opposition in Turkey ahead of a planned invasion of Syria and Iran whilst implementing the U.S. plan to divide both the occupied Iraq and Syria into three separate entities.
MILITARY PREPARATIONS
The day after Israeli Air Forces’ May 5th attack on Syria, Turkey and Israel have launched separate military exercises near their respective borders with Syria. Israeli drills took place in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, while Turkey’s ‘Yildirim-2013 Mobilization Exercise’ was held at NATO’s Incirlik Airbase. [69] According to a statement by Turkey’s General Staff, the aim of Yildirim-2013 exercise was to test Turkish Armed Forces’ readiness for battle and coordination with Government ministries. The ten-day exercise finished on May 15th, the day before Mr Erdogan met Mr Obama in Washington D.C. [70]
The same day, a unit consisting of hundreds of armed personnel carrier vehicles carrying ‘Free Syrian Army’ militants, accompanied by tanks defending them, crossed from Turkey’s Ceylanpinar border gate into Syria. This military deployment, considered to be the largest ever from the region, occurred at a time when the militants squeezed in Ras al-Ayn [in Northern Syria] needed help. [71]
Again, on the same day, U.S.-led IMCMEX 2013 naval exercise in the Persian Gulf against Iran was launched. Although the list of participant countries has been kept secret, in all likelihood Turkey is among the 41 countries taking part in these exercises which runs from May 6 until May 30. [72]
Turkey will also be among the 18 countries taking part in the U.S.-led ‘Eager Lion 2013’ exercise due to be held in Jordan in June. [73]
Recently, particularly in the run up to Prime Minister Erdogan’s visit to the United States, there has been an increase in flights along Turkey’s border with Syria to detect Syria’s air defence systems, collect military intelligence and transmit intelligence to armed groups supported by Turkey’s government. [74]
Furthermore, according to the Government’s own figures, in 2012 Turkey has spent over 694 million Turkish Liras (over 386 million U.S. dollars) from its discretionary operations fund. [75] This fund is financing Turkey’s covert war on Syria.
It is worth bearing in mind that NATO’s Incirlik Airbase is notorious for the role it played during the wars against Iraq (1991), Yugoslavia (1999), Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003) and Libya (2011) and for hosting the largest nuclear weapons of mass destruction arsenal outside the U.S. territory. [76]
CONCLUSION
When the U.S. and its allies launched the covert war on Syria in 2011, they were expecting that either Syria’s political establishment would collapse within a short duration or they would find a way to ignite an open war. As Syria’s leaders and people proved to be exceptionally resilient, increasingly more brutal means have been deployed to tear the country apart. Being at the forefront of this covert war in every respect, Turkey has been thoroughly complicit in monumental war crimes committed against the neighbouring people of Syria.
Having very skilfully manipulated the world public opinion with the help, among other measures, of a gigantic public relations apparatus, for more than ten years; Mr Erdogan’s government, like its main allies, is currently experiencing a deep crisis of legitimacy both at home and abroad. Instead of boosting Mr Erdogan’s standing, the false-flag bombing attacks in Reyhanli have actually unleashed a nationwide popular reaction against his total subservience to Western imperialism.

Corporate press brazenly lies about bombshell audio tape

The mainstream media has spun, mischaracterized and outright lied about a shocking leaked audio tape in which top Turkish military and political officials brazenly plan to stage a false flag attack on their own country in order to create a pretext for war on Syria.
Shocking details of dialogue between top Turkish officials reveals clear evidence of them scheming to launch a staged provocation against Turkish interests that would be blamed on Syria as a justification for military invasion.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan admitted the authenticity of the tape when he described the leaking of the audio as “villainous” and “immoral,” before moving to ban YouTube.
“I’ll make up a cause of war by ordering a missile attack on Turkey,” states Hakan Fidan, the head of Turkish intelligence.
“It’s a direct cause of war. I mean, what we’re going to do is a direct cause of war,” adds Deputy Chief of Military Staff Yasar Guler.
Plans to attack the Suleiman Shah Tomb, which is in Syria but considered Turkish territory and guarded by Turkish special forces, are also discussed, with Al-Qaeda terrorists playing the role of patsies.
“Prime Minister said that in current conjuncture, this attack (on Suleiman Shah Tomb) must be seen as an opportunity for us,” states Ahmet Davutoglu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“We can also prepare an attack on Suleiman Shah Tomb if necessary,” responds Fidan.
“Listen, listen commander if it’s a pretext we’ll give you one. I’ll send over four men and have them fire eight rockets on an empty lot. That’s not the problem! Pretexts can be arranged,” adds Fidan.
Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioglu responds by asserting that the staged attack will have “legitimacy” because it will be seen as a strike against Al-Qaeda and Turkey will have “the whole world backing us”.
“If necessary, we’ll mount an attack against that place (Suleiman Shah Tomb),” states Fidan, adding, “we’ll do the attack up front.”
To be clear, this confirmed audio tape represents ‘caught red handed’ concrete evidence of Turkish officials planning attacks on their own country to be blamed on Syria as a pretext for military invasion.
The officials also consider how the U.S. would react to the plan, fearing that it could backfire because Turkey may be perceived as weak due to its inability to protect its own interests.
Following yesterday’s bombshell revelation of the false flag plot, the mainstream media reacted in unison by ignoring the shocking content of the actual dialogue and instead making the story about how Erdogan banned YouTube, without specifically explaining why it was banned.
Innumerable news outlets euphemistically described the tape as containing discussions about plans for Turkish “intervention” in Syria, mischaracterizing the context and censoring the fact that the tape was a brazen admission of high Turkish officials planning a staged provocation as a pretext to attack Syria.
Reuters even reported that the conversation, “appeared to centre on a possible operation to secure the tomb of Suleyman Shah,” when in reality the conversation is about attacking the tomb, not securing it.
A BBC News report about the tape said it “relates to a discussion of possible military operations in Syria,” completely omitting the fact that the tape is centered around Turkey attacking its own interests in a staged provocation.
A CNN report goes to great lengths in exploring how and why the audio tape was leaked while failing completely to mention its actual content.
An L.A. Times report states that the tape discusses “possible military intervention in Syria”. Although the article quotes some portions of the tape, it completely omits key sections where Turkish officials admit they plan to launch false flag attacks.
Although a Washington Post article about the leaked tape prints the full transcript, the actual report mischaracterizes it by asserting, “The officials mull whether to strike — or even use ground troops — against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, a jihadist group rooted in Syria.” The article fails to mention anything about Turkish officials planning to “make up a cause for war” by launching an attack against their own country.
None of these major publications dared to reveal the actual core of the story – that the tape contains bombshell revelations of Turkish military and political officials planning attacks on their own country as a casus belli for war on Syria.
Only USA Today somewhat accurately covered the story, reporting that the tape revealed, “that top Turkey officials were plotting to fake an attack against their own country as an excuse to wage war on Turkey.”
Given Turkey’s NATO membership and its close ties with the United States, this scandal is at least on a par with the Benghazi stand down yet has received minimal and almost universally distorted media coverage given its staggering importance.

18 year old in court tomorrow charged with supporting PKK
Shilan Ozcelik, an 18-year-old woman from north London who has been accused of supporting terrorism by attempting to join the PKK, will have her first hearing in the Old Bailey tomorrow morning.
The hearing is set to begin at 9.30am and a demonstration in support of Shilan has been organised. Over a hundred people are expected to take part in the action, which calls for her immediate release.[1] It follows a Change.org petition which was launched following Shilan’s charge and has now gathered well over 3,000 signatures.[2]
We condemn the arrest as a blatant example of political and selective criminalisation of the Kurdish community at large, which has continued since the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has been listed on the UK’s list of ‘terrorist’ organisations.
We emphatically reject this labelling of the PKK, which we believe confuses the Kurdish people’s legitimate struggle for self-determination with terrorism and has the effect of criminalising anyone in our community who is part of peaceful political activity. We know that Silan has never committed any act of violence and poses no threat to the people of this country.
The arrest comes at a time when the Kurdish struggle has been garnering unprecedented international support for their recent armed struggle against ISIS. There, the PKK’s affiliated forces, the YPG and YPJ, have received praise from activists and senior politicians alike for their incredible efforts fighting back ISIS from Kobane and parts of northern Syria and Iraq.
Given this context, the arrest of a young Kurdish woman for allegedly attempting to join the YPJ seems more than a little contradictory. The YPG and YPJ, who had been in a tacit alliance with US and British forces in the struggle for Kobane, are not listed on any terrorist list.
We call for Silan’s immediate release, and for the PKK to be removed from the terrorism list once and for all.

Israeli army admits aiding al-Qaeda in Syria

An under-noticed news report last week confirmed previously-held suspicions and strong implications that Israeli troops are aiding the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's official Syrian affiliate.
Speaking to Israeli occupation troops last week, a Wall Street Journal reporter on the ground in Mount Bental (part of the occupied Golan Heights) found that Israeli troops receive wounded al-Qaeda fighters, treat them in Israeli hospitals and send them back to continue fighting against the government in Syria.
The Nusra Front in August overran the Qunaitra crossing, the checkpoint between the Israeli-occupied and Syrian-controlled sectors of the Golan Heights. Israeli invaded that region of south-west Syria in 1967 and has illegally occupied most of the Golan Heights ever since.
As I pointed out in a previous column, the reports of UN peacekeeping forces since Nusra took over the checkpoint were highly suggestive of Israeli contacts and even military aid to the al-Qaeda rebels. But this Wall Street Journal report has confirmed the fact.
"We don't ask who they are, we don't do any screening," the unnamed Israeli military official told the paper of the hospital treatment of al-Qaeda fighters. "Once the treatment is done, we take them back to the border [sic - ceasefire line] and they go on their way [in Syria]," he said.
An unnamed military official also said there is an "understanding" between Israeli forces and al-Qaeda fighters there and that "there is a familiarity of the [al-Qaeda] forces on the ground".
Popular conspiracy theories have it that al-Qaeda and the "Islamic State" (also known as ISIS or ISIL) are Israeli- and/or US-intelligence creations. While there's no evidence for that, it's certainly true that the US-UK invasion of Iraq in 2003, and its consciously sectarian occupation regime of the country thereafter, created the conditions in which al-Qaeda in Iraq (later known as ISIS) was formed and thrived. Veteran journalist Patrick Cockburn demonstrates this most convincingly in his essential new book The Rise of Islamic State, which I have previously lauded here.
And now it seems that Israel is in a direct alliance with al-Qaeda in Syria. This is a tactical alliance, meant purely to bleed the country and prolong the civil war.
Read the quotes from Israeli officials in recent months about the Nusra Front and you will see a strange sort of soft-peddling of the group, casting them as a kind of "moderate al-Qaeda" if you will.
"Nusra is a unique version of al-Qaeda," retired Brigadier General Michael Herzog told the Wall Street Journal. "They manage to cooperate with non-Islamist and non-jihadi organizations in one coalition." Herzog is a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP, the think tank of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the première Israel lobby group in the US) and former chief of staff for Israel's defence minister. The Nusra Front "are totally focused on the war in Syria and aren't focused on us," he claimed. "But when Hezbollah and Iran and others are pushing south, they are very much focused on us."
Hizballah and Iran, allies of the Bashar al-Assad regime, are aiding the government in Syria and fighting on the ground alongside Syrian army troops against al-Qaeda, the "Islamic State" and other Sunni rebel groups.
Even before Nusra took over the Qunairtra checkpoint in August, reports suggested Israel seemed on rather friendly terms with the al-Qaeda affiliate.
In June, army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told Foreign Policy that the Israeli government has provided medical assistance to more than 1,000 Syrians over the past fourteen months. "We give medical aid to people who are in dire need," he said in a telephone interview with the magazine, echoing the statement made last week to the Wall Street Journal. "We don't do any vetting or check where they are from or which group they are fighting for, or whether they are civilians."
Ehud Yaari, an Israeli fellow at WINEP, admitted that Israeli assistance has benefited fighters: "The wounded are both fighters and civilians but there are not too many civilians left because of the fighting raging there ... Close to 900 Syrians have been treated in Israel."
Foreign Policy reports that, even earlier than June 2014, in March 2013: "Some 400 armed opposition fighters, backed by artillery fire from three tanks, seized a Syrian military outpost atop a hill at Tal al-Garbi, planting four black flags and raising concern that extremist groups are moving into the zone.
"More than two weeks later, opposition fighters captured two other strategically important hilltop military outposts in Tal al-Jabiya and Tal al-Sharqi.
"'In the afternoon of 24 April, two members of the armed opposition displayed the severed head of a presumed Syrian armed forces officer as they passed' a UN outpost, according to the [UN] report. By the end of April [2013], UN observers 'detected the flying of black flags believed to be associated with militant groups scattered throughout the central and southern part of the area of separation, including three Syrian armed forces positions captured by the armed members of the opposition.'"
So Israeli aid to al-Qaeda in Syria may have been ongoing for as long as nearly two years now. But what is sure is that Israeli aid to al-Qaeda in Syria has now been confirmed.

We are calling on all those who stand against fascism and nationalist attacks to join us tomorrow (Thursday 10th Sept) and condemn the brutal attacks of the Turkish state against Kurdish civilians and politicians.
Large numbers of racist groups have started a Kurd-hunt in a number of Turkish cities, in which some 126 offices of the HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) were attacked across the country since yesterday.
Police took no action against the aggressive assailants who blamed the HDP for the current crisis in Turkey, without ever mentioning the role of the AKP despite it clearly stating that “None of these would have happened if we had won 400 seats in the parliament”.
While a state of emergency and curfew has been in place 200 people (many of whom are children and young people) have been killed in the last month. These attacks continue all over Turkey, but the Kurdish city of Cizre is under intense fire by the government forces, while nationalist groups are burning down many shops and houses of people.
We call on the British parliament not to turn a blind eye to these attacks.

The HDP was among those joining Saturday's rally for "peace and democracy", called for by the confederation of trades unions, which was due to start at 12:00 local time.
The two explosions happened shortly after 10:00 as crowds gathered ahead of the rally. Amateur video footage showed a group of young people holding hands and singing, before the first blast.
The HDP tweeted that police "attacked" people carrying the injured away.
Opposition MP Musa Cam tweeted a photo of a ball bearing he says he found at the scene.
Local resident Emre told the BBC that he heard two separate explosions and saw a number of dead bodies. Angry people tried to attack police cars, he said.
An HDP rally in the city of Diyarbakir was bombed in June, ahead of general elections in which the party entered parliament for the first time.
The BBC's Mark Lowen in Istanbul says it was feared that another similar attack was imminent, as voters prepare to go to the polls once more.
In July, a suicide bombing by suspected Islamic State militants on a gathering of Socialist youth activists in the town of Suruc on the Syrian border killed at least 30 people.
A ceasefire between the Kurdish militant group the PKK and Turkey's government later broke down, and there have been regular attacks from both sides since then.

A peace rally outside the main train station in Ankara was hit by large bomb explosions this morning killing some 97 people. Eyewitnesses talk about hundreds of injured. Medical staff and civilians who rushed to help were allegedly attacked by the police with gas grenades.
The peace rally had been called by the trade unions DISK (Confederation of Revolutionary Workers), KESK (Confederation Workers of Public Trade Unions) as well as by association such as TMMOB (Engineers and Architects Chamber of Turkey) and TTB (Doctors Chambers of Turkey). The call was also supported by the HDP (People’s Democratic Party) and several left and democratic parties and civil society organisations. The gathering was to deliver a message of peace, democracy and solidarity in Turkey. According to the HDP MP Sirri Surreyya Onder there were three bomb explosions at the rally mainly targeting the HDP block and the Kurds at the rally.
A declaration of a ceasefire was expected to be called by KCK on Sunday
The co-chair of Kongra-gel (Democratic People’s Congress), Remzi Kartal, had announced at the Med Nuce TV on 9 October that a ceasefire would be declared at a rally on Sunday. “The ceasefire is aimed at strengthening the democratic forces in Turkey. All those who are calling for the ceasefire, must support this process,” said Kartal. The fact that the bomb attacks took place only one day before the announcement of the ceasefire was scheduled is seen by many as a direct attack on the efforts to end the conflict.

The HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtas accused the AKP government direct complicity in the bomb attack. In his first press statement in Istanbul, Demirtas called on people to look at Ankara. “Here are the corpses of the victims still lying on the streets, while the injured are transported to the hospitals. And in the middle of this situation the police are shooting at the crowds of people with gas grenades, and the ambulances are not able to leave the place. In the middle of Ankara a massacre is taking place, but they are not allowing the ambulances to move, and there is only police there. It appears they want many more people to die. Now the President will soon appear and call on us all to be restrained, while at the same time police forces who are under his command attack the injured at the scene with gas grenades,” said Dermitas. “We are dealing here with a Mafioso, murderous and mass murderous state mentality”, he added.

Open letter to David Cameron on UK policy towards Turkey
Dear Prime Minister
You sent words of condolences to President Erdogan on the news of last week's twin suicide bombing at the peace rally in Ankara which left over 100 people dead and many more mutilated. Erdogan himself however has shown no signs of grieving, compassion or humility in response to this latest in what has been a series of horrific attacks on mainly Kurdish political organisations in recent months.
The scene of carnage in Ankara was so appalling that it has traumatised the nation which was still barely recovering from the aftermath of July's massacre of students in the border town Suruc which left more than 30 victims of another ISIS-inspired suicide bombing.
The reality is that it is the Kurds who have been bearing the brunt of these attacks from terrorist groups linked to ISIS and al Qaeda who appear to freely operate inside Turkey. At best, it is a failure of security, but many Kurds have concluded that these incidents are manifestations of the work of what is called the “deep state”, accusing the authorities of collaboration with the terrorists.
Suspicions turned to anger when Turkish leaders refused to accept any responsibility for security lapses and even sought to blame the PKK for the attack in Ankara, which is bizarre in the extreme. Most of the victims were Kurds and they were all calling for the resumption of peace talks between the government and the PKK to end the violence. It is absurd to suggest that the PKK would have had any involvement in such a brutal attack.
The massacre has exacerbated the deep divisions that have opened up in Turkish society in the months following the June election which left the AKP falling short of an absolute majority to rule alone. The sectarian policies pursued by the government, particularly since the election, have contributed to the renewed conflict and the divisions in Turkish society are today clear for all to see. Erdogan needs to be challenged on where he is taking the country. Erdogan is a very divisive figure and has even been described by Turkish novelist, Elif Shafak, as “the most divisive leader in Turkish history”.
The prospects of peace with the Kurds have been squandered mainly through Erdogan's Machiavellian machinations and his obsession with changing the country's constitution in order to give more power to himself as the president. The victory of the pro-Kurdish HDP in June's election enraged Erdogan who saw it as an obstacle to be removed at all cost, rather than grasped as an opportunity to resolve the Kurdish conflict by democratic means. Talks with jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan had been put on hold before the election, but now there is little sign of Erdogan wanting to return to the negotiating table any time soon, if at all.
Conflict has been deliberately stoked for political gain in a grotesquely irresponsible and cynical way. As such, Kurdish people have been right to question the timing of the Ankara bombings which came within hours of the announcement from the PKK of a ceasefire. This offer of a halt to the conflict which has claimed an estimated 700 lives in the past few months was immediately rejected by the Turkish government and its bombing of Kurdish positions in Iraq was actually stepped up.
The reality is clear for all to see: Erdogan and the AKP are obstructing the achievement of peace not only in their own country but in Syria too where they are pursuing a sectarian war against the Syrian Kurds who are fighting ISIS.
The UK must realise that Turkey's current policies are deeply divisive and fuelling conflict at home and abroad. It is high time that Turkey's allies ended their silence on Erdogan's abuses of power and authoritarian rule. In this respect it is deeply dismaying that the EU seems prepared to make so many concessions to Turkey in order to seal a deal on the Syrian refugees. Turning a blind eye to Erdogan's increasing authoritarian regime will be a recipe for disaster and simply ensures even greater instability in the region. We will all pay a very heavy price indeed.
The UK needs to tell Erdogan to return to the peace process with the Kurds and to call a halt to its divisive sectarian policies, stop bombing the Kurds and end its curbs on human rights. Only this course of action can end the climate of fear and start to heal the ruptures that are today tearing Turkey apart.

According to information obtained by Today’s Zaman, Yakup Şahin, the driver, had been physically tailed and electronically tracked by the intelligence unit of the Gaziantep Police Department on suspicions of having ties with members of the terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The police had kept track of those whom Şahin had contacted in Gaziantep. But Şahin managed to lose the police tail for 24 hours just two days before the Oct. 10 attack.

In Turkey, an attack on a demonstration for peace killed over a hundred people. An eye-witness account by Alp Kayserilioglu
At 10:00 o'clock my comrade, colleague and friend Max Zirngast and I are sitting in a cab on our way to the peace demonstration, which starts at Ankara central station. Once again, we are running late due to my fault. Thousands of people and dozens of our comrades from different parts of turkey are already there. Max, once again, is furious because of me being late. Meanwhile I, guilty but strong as ever, am chatting away with the cab driver, who seems to be a nice person.
But this time, my notorious tardiness saved our lives. As soon as we get out of the cab and run to the square in front of the main station in order to join the ranks of the demonstration, a bomb explodes right at the spot where we would have been, had we have been on time.
I first notice a 10-20 meters tall blast of fire and a thundering bass, thinking that somehow we all of a sudden find ourselves in a movie, that this is not quite real. I do not really grasp what is going on. In my head the bomb attacks in Diyarbakır on July 7st right before the elections and in Suruc on July 20st are repeating like a movie. I fail to connect the demonstration in Ankara with such an attack. Looking at Max, I realise that he, too, has big questionmarks instead of eyes: is that... was that... a bomb? Ankara, now, too? No. Really?
As people around us start to become increasingly angry and aggressive, to shout and curse at the top of their lungs, we slowly take it in: yes, that was a massive bomb. The first reaction that sets in is – since I did not hear the second bomb, but know that in such attacks very often multiple bombs are set – that I start starring wildly at my surroundings, looking for possible assailants or bags with bombs in them. As if I would be able to tell.
Max, the others and I retreat to the bridge on the northern site, which leads to the main connecting road. We see how comrades, especially the ones of the Halkevleri, stop traffic and only let ambulances pass, but there are suspiciously few of these.
It is mainly cabs who take away the first wounded.
Bit by bit, sporadically, ambulances come in. Later we compare our observations with other eye-witness accounts, which confirm our impression. The medical association later claims that ambulances could get to the crime scene only slowly. But riot cops in full combat gear, together with water cannons and armored vehicles are there rather quickly and before the majority of ambulances can reach the square. Nevertheless, even they come only a striking 10 -15 minutes after the explosion.
Before they arrive only some little patrol cars are helplessly cruising the area, being smashed by the demonstrators, as they should. Also in this regard various eye-witnesses give similar reports. One source claims that on the square, where the bomb went off, there has been no police and only few police cars, all of them empty anyway.
That can hardly be coincidential Be this as it may, I tell Max, that I am sure the square is safe now: where there are cops, no bomb will explode, because cops do not show up where their bosses send canon fodder to carry out suicide attacks.
The AKP are disgusting and shameless enough to ask after every bomb attack: „How come there haven't been any HDP Congressmen amongst the dead? Isn't that suspicious?“ Apart from the fact that, sadly, there have been HDP candidates for congress amongst the dead (one of which, Kübra from Istanbul, I got to know during the campaign for the last elections), this question should be turned around: „Not one dead cop, not one dead undercover cop? Why is there not a single injured cop amongst over 500 wounded? Isn't that suspicious?“
Anyway. What happened instead of a third bomb blast was a police intervention on the south side of the square – including lots and lots of tear gas. Yes, you are not mistaken: this happened while hundreds of dead and wounded still lay on the ground and hardly any ambulances were present yet.
All of this has been well documented on video.
In inferno
Max and I are slowly walking back to the spot of the explosions. We finally were able to call our comrades, whom as if by miracle remained unharmed, even though some of them have been standing close to the explosions. One comrade told us dozens of wounded and dead are still lying around, and they are busy helping transporting them. We want to join them to offer our help, too.

First of all, only to get to the square was hard. Riot cops blocked access at random, closing some, leaving some open. We finally make it. On the square there is chaos, sirens, honking, wounded are being transported, angry people are attacking the cops. What we see is horrible: constantly Max keeps warning me: „Careful!“, because I am about to step on a severed finger, a fragment of skin, a piece of brain, parts of a head, tufts of hair, non identifiable intestines or puddles of blood. Many people are crying, some are shouting, some bodies are being wrapped in flags. Everywhere there is the stench of blood and death. I'm getting increasingly dizzy; i tell Max to not look at the floor.
Still we are of no big use and wander aimlessly. We see many ambulances, but no more wounded. All of a sudden we are at the spot the second bomb exploded. The whole place is one big puddle of blood with pieces of bodies in it. I can see about a dozen corpses wrapped in flags. The stench is unbearable, I start choking and hold my nose shut.
The next paramedics we run into – whom we finally can ask what we can do to help, since we slowly gain back control over ourselves – tell us that all the wounded have been removed and we should rather go donate blood.
While on our way to leave the square we see the bomb squad. The speaker bus announces that there could be more bombs on the grounds and therefore the area has to bee evacuated. But the announcement somehow seems grotesque and almost no one seems to take notice.
Bombs, Massacre, War – The AKP and Power
We go to several hospitals, but they do not need our blood. They need negative, we both have positive blood type. Thus we decide to go home. Dozens of comrades are in our apartment, waiting for their buses back to all different parts of Turkey. Even though the living room is absolutely overcrowded, there is dead silence. I still can not really believe no one got hurt.
For most of them this is due to pure coincidence: a comrade from Samsun - a gentle giant who is always vivid and merry, even as he is telling the story of how he survived just by accident – tells us that right before the blast they had had to move 20 meters to the side due to some argument concerning the order of the blocks in the demonstration. This saved their lives. Another comrade from Ankara left the crowd to make a phone call. The comrades from Hatay were standing only 50 meters away from the explosion. The shrapnel the bomb sent flying off in all directions had immediately killed their two comrades of the Halkevleri from Ankara, with whom they had come from Antakya and were standing right next to them. Several of our comrades stayed with the corpses on the square, helping in the transport.
One of them says that they had had to wait for five full hours until the bodies of the comrades of the Halkevleri were being taken by the ambulances. Another comrade was in front of the main entry and tells us how she saw pieces of brain mass flying through the air after the second explosion.
Anyway, Max and I slowly awake from our trance and get behind our computers and smartphones. We quickly gain an overview of the dimension and purpose of the attack, before we go join a demonstration in Tuzluçayır, a district of Ankara.
As time goes by the number of deaths rises dramatically. Untill midnight the HDP crisis center announced 128 dead and over 500 wounded. The culprits' identity – almost certainly two suicide bombers – remains unknown. In any case, the “Islamic State” has allready sent their congratulations. And also other scum did not remain silent and made it understood what hits is all about: AKP secretary Eroğlu claimed all of this would be a part of the HDP's electoral campaign, they want to appear as victims and win votes, “just like in the Diyarbakır bombing”.
Following this logic, eeeer.... , the HDP has bombed themselves and the rest.
The mayor of Ankara, AKP, took a stance 13 hours after the attack and claimed that it is to “a 100%” sure the PKK ist behind this and that it would “be difficult now for the HDP to reach the [10%] electoral threshold”. So in this logic, the PKK has bombed the HDP, because..... oh, who cares!
Meanwhile a video of the infamous assassin and mafia boss Sedat Perker appeared – once arrested by the AKP because of allegedly being loyal to the military, he had been released from prison after the “argument” between preacher Fetullah Gülen and the AKP and now is, coincidentaly, one of the party's biggest fans – in which he talks to AKP followers in an event in Rize which took place just a day before the attacks in Ankara. In this video he says that “blood will flow by the liter”.
But the absolute higlight is the nauseating duo consisting of Sultan Erdoğan and his apprentice Vezir (formally also known as prime minister) Davutoğlu: over a hundred dead civilians right in the center of the republic did not prevent Erdoğan from releasing a written statement that went more or less like this: “This attack wasn't much worse than those which hit our soldiers; the biggest support for terrorists is the usage of double standard vis-à-vis terrorism.” His apprentice followed swiftly by declaring a three-day national mourning – for “all” citizens, soldiers, policemen and such, who have become victims of “terrorism”. Once again, this handfull of dead was used to talk of “terrorism” in a general manner in order to propagate the “unity and brotherhood of the nation”.
So whomever does not participate in this grotesque “unity” and “brotherhood” or concerns oneself with the case at hand, which did not happen in a combat situation but has been a bomb attack on a civilian demonstration, whomever does this, following this logic, supports “terrorism” and thus has become a traitor of the fatherland.
From now on it's: “Fear for your life, if you don't dig the AKP”...
So: without bombs, one can not hold on to power anymore. At least if “one” is the AKP. That is what they already did before the elections of June 7st: almost 200 attacks on HDP offices were carried out back then, and shortly before the elections a bomb exploded on a big rally in Diyarbakır. Five people died, dozens were injured, some of them badly. But the AKP could not win. The HDP got 13,2% of the vote, moved into the parliament and destroyed the dream of a presidential dictatorship which Erdoğan and his friends had been dreaming.
Those uttered their anger quite openly: The people had chosen chaos (well-known AKP member Burhan Kuzu), it had been warned to not vote for the HDP (vice prime minister Yalçın Akdoğan, AKP). Erdoğan demanded 550 “national and native” parliamentarians for a new parliament and, inşallah, God willing, finally a total majority for the AKP again and a presidential system, since the lack of the latter is what had let to chaos in the first place (AKP minister of health Müezzinoğlu).
The attack in Suruç on July 20st, in which 32 activists who wanted to help in reconstructing Kobane were assassinated, was used as “additional convincing argument”, just like the large scale war against the PKK that followed, which was allegedly a war against “terrorsim as such”. Now and so far the highlight of this “argumentation” is the attack in the capital Ankara. Now applies to all of Turkey, not only Kurdistan: Whomever raises his voice against AKP can not be sure of his life and his physical integrity anymore.
...or: “Down with AKP”
So now the probably last step of escalation before the declaration of the state of emergency in all of Turkey has been reached, before extensive special power for the executive will be granted, before – let us face it – an overall fascist coup concerning the use of repressive means in order to stay in power.
Even though the PKK has been trying to de-escalate for a couple of days by declaring a ceasefire on the morning of the day of the attacks in Ankara (but which probably had been decided on earlier) in order to ensure peace and security for the elections, the Turkish side seems to not care. They actually are annoyed by less war (as can be seen in the vice prime minister Yalçın Akdoğan's (AKP) statement that he “has had enough” of all the PKK cease fire declarations, which are “only tactical” anyway).
And should it really become appearent that the results of the elections will not change much compared to those of June 7st – which is highly unlikely – we have to be prepared for many new monstrosities the AKP and the turkish state will unleash on the country.
If a possible altered level of repression can be successfull will be decided by the capability of the democratic and socialist forces to offer political resistance here in Turkey. The biggest political and in fact also moral mistake now is to still pretend that „normal“ elections in a „normal“ parliamentarian-democratic procedure can be expected, in a situation in which a party that has been deselected when it comes to its' total majority still rules in a half-dictatorial way and nonchalantly accepts hundreds of dead and thousands of wounded. Such a perspective would give undue credit to the AKP butchers by treating them like a normal, civil and democratic party that it has ceased to be a long time ago.
Tens of thousands in the Istiklal in Istanbul and many thousands in diverse districts of many cities both in Turkey and internaionally marched against state terror as a reaction to the massacre of Ankara and thus set a sign of resistance.
We, who were lucky enough to survive the attack of Ankara, have the moral obligation to make the regime and their henchmen fall and to ensure they will be held responsible for their deeds.
We owe this to the dead and wounded. We also owe this to a possible perspective of peace.

A prominent Kurdish lawyer and rights activist, who faced criminal charges for defending Kurdish rebels as not terrorists, has been shot in the head and killed in Turkey.
Tahir Elci, 49, was caught in a gun battle between police and unidentified gunmen as he delivered a statement calling for an end to violence between the Turkish state and Kurdish rebel group the PKK.
Two policemen were also killed in the shoot-out in Turkey's south eastern city of Diyarbakir, with another 11 people injured.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu put forward two possible scenarios; either Mr Elci may have been caught in crossfire or it was an assassination. If it was the latter, he said, the target was clear.

He has vowed to find the culprits and four investigators have been assigned to the case, although authorities are not ruling out a direct third-party attack as Mr Elci had previously received death threats via social media for his comments about the Kurdish rebels.
President Tayyip Erdogan said the incident showed Turkey was right in "its determination to fight terrorism".
Speaking at a news conference alongside Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag, Interior Minister Efkan Ala said the gun battle erupted after someone shot at police from an unidentified car.
The Diyarbakir governor’s office declared a curfew in the area after the incident.

They said Mr Elci had been targeted by the ruling AK party and its media. The HDP called for political parties, civil society and professional groups to "raise their voices" in protest.
"In the place left by Tahir Elci, thousands more Tahir Elcis will carry on the work in the struggle for law and justice," the party said in a statement.
Marchers in central Istanbul chanted: “Shoulder to shoulder against fascism” and “Tahir Elci is immortal”. Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the hundreds of people marching in protest on Istanbul’s central Istikal Street.
Much of the gun battle was caught on video, with footage showing plain-clothes police reportedly shooting at a figure who was running past them toward Mr Elci. He was then seen lying on the ground with blood apparently streaming from his head.
Witnesses say Mr Elci had been speaking about a historic minaret which had been damaged in clashes just days before in Sur, a district of Diyarbakir. He was also calling for an end to violence between the Turkish sate and the Kurdish rebel group.
“We do not want guns, clashes and operations here”, Mr Elci said moments before the shooting.
“The moment the statement ended, the crowd was sprayed with bullets,” a local HDP party official, Omer Tastan, said.
“A single bullet struck Elci in the head,” he said, adding that 11 people had also been wounded in the incident.

According to Cumhuriyet, Turkish security forces in January 2014 intercepted a convoy of trucks near the Syrian border and discovered boxes of what the daily described as weapons and ammunition to be sent to rebels fighting against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
It linked the seized trucks to the Turkish national intelligence organisation (MIT).
The revelations, published in May, caused a political storm in Turkey, and enraged president Recep Tayyip Erdogan who vowed Dundar would pay a “heavy price”.
He personally filed a criminal complaint against Dundar, 54, demanding he serve multiple life sentences.
Turkey has vehemently denied aiding Islamist rebels in Syria, such as the Islamic State group, although it wants to see Assad toppled.....'

'A commander of the Iraqi volunteer forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) revealed that a mobile phone found with one of the killed ISIL ringleaders proved the Turkish spy agency’s support for the terrorist group.
“The mobile phone was found with one of the killed ISIL leaders in the Northern parts of Salahuddin province two days ago,” Jabbar al-Ma’mouri told Soumeriya news on Monday.
He said that the mobile set and history files contain messages from the Turkish intelligence agency which show that Ankara supports the ISIL terrorist group through providing security at the points of entry used by ISIL militants from Turkey to Iraq.
“The mobile phone also contains other important information which cannot be disclosed now, and it has been delivered to the specialized security groups for further scrutiny,” Ma’mouri said.
In relevant remarks in November, Russian Ambassador to France Alexander Orlov said that Turkey has played an “ambiguous” role in the campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) while acting as an accomplice to the terrorist group’s activities.
Also last month, former US Department of State senior advisor David Phillips said Turkey has blatantly provided material support to the ISIL because they share an ideological connection along with a common foe in Syrian President Bashar Assad.
“Turkey’s role has not been ambiguous — it has overtly supported the ISIL,” Phillips, currently Director of Columbia University’s Peace-building and Rights Program, said. “It has provided logistical support, money, weapons, transport and healthcare to wounded warriors.”
Phillips explained that Turkey has been supporting the ISIL to remove Syrian President Bashar Assad from power and because of a “spiritual bond” that exists between Turkey’s governing party and the jihadists.

A number of businessmen, teachers, police officers, press members and philanthropists across Turkey have been dismissed from their jobs, detained or arrested, as government-initiated witch hunt operations targeting the faith-based Gülen movement escalated in 2015.
The operations started after a corruption investigation was made public on Dec. 17, 2013. The graft probe implicated then-prime minister and current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, members of his family and senior Justice and Development Party (AK Party) figures.
Since then, Erdoğan has targeted followers of the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet movement, a grassroots initiative inspired by the teachings of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. He claimed that sympathizers of the movement within the police department had fabricated the graft scandal and accused them of plotting to overthrow his government.
Although the movement has strongly rejected the allegations brought against it, Erdoğan promised a war against the movement in May 2014 and infamously said that he would even carry out a “witch hunt” against anyone with any link to the movement if necessary. He publicly advised AK Party supporters not to send their children to schools inspired by the movement, vowing, “We will not even give water [to the movement's sympathizers].” Erdoğan has also ordered officials in AK Party-run municipalities to seize land and buildings linked to the Gülen movement by any means necessary.
As the government-initiated police operations against the “parallel state” -- a term invented by Erdoğan to refer to alleged sympathizers of the Gülen movement within the state bureaucracy -- gathered momentum in 2015, numerous people were dismissed from their jobs, detained or arrested.
Hazim Sesli, a leading businessman in Turkey's western province of Uşak, was arrested in October after he was detained on charges of being a member of the so-called "parallel structure." A total of 25 individuals, including prominent businessmen, were detained as part of the operation. Four of the 25 detainees -- including Sesli -- were arrested.
Kenan Ünal, a businessman whose experience contributed to facilitating the construction of a Turkish school in Mongolia, was arrested on charges of providing financial support to the so-called “parallel state” on the same day.
Ünal's brother, Ramazan Ünal, criticized the arrest and said: “We went there [to Mongolia] to promote our country with a number of high state officials. President Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and National Intelligence Organization (MİT) chief Hakan Fidan accompanied us. I don't know what else to say.”
A total of 26 people, including lawyers, educators and philanthropists, were detained in Manisa on Nov. 10, also on charges of providing financial support to the “parallel structure.”
The operation became controversial when images of two headscarved women being escorted to police cars in handcuffs made the rounds on social media. After reaction mounted, the government ordered an investigation into the use of handcuffs, which legal experts agree was unnecessary and critics say was aimed at intimidating and publicly humiliating the detainees.
After all 26 detainees were released in several groups in the following days, seven of them were once again detained and arrested a week later. One of them was 56-year-old Şemsettin Ayyıldız, a teacher of a Culture of Religion and Knowledge of Morality course. In response to his arrest, Ayyıldız said: “I even pass a knife to family members while holding the sharp end so as not to frighten anyone. And here I am being arrested on terrorism charges.” After Ayyıldız's arrest, his wife, Elif, criticized the way police officers treated him, saying he wasn't even allowed to take his heart medication with him.
Former AK Party deputy İlhan İşbilen and two others were arrested in December after being detained as part of an operation against the so-called “parallel structure,” while detention warrants were issued for as many as 65 people as part of the same investigation. Many former AK Party deputies spoke out against İşbilen's arrest, with Hasan Hami Yıldırım saying he is the last person who should be accused of terrorism or membership in a terrorist organization. Former Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay told Today's Zaman that then-Prime Minister Erdoğan had spoken highly of İşbilen. “I was introduced to İşbilen in 2011 as a very decent, nice and knowledgeable man. Erdoğan himself spoke highly of him. Not just me, but everybody in Parliament knew Mr. İşbilen as someone who respects the Constitution and Parliament's bylaws,” Günay said.
Armed police raid daycare center in Zonguldak
Operations carried out in Gülen-inspired schools were extended to daycare centers in August, with police officers accompanied by inspectors from several government bodies conducting raids on the private kindergarten Gonca, established in Zonguldak by movement volunteers, on Aug. 7.
Many experts criticized the raid, saying that it might cause the young children in the kindergarten to suffer psychological trauma triggered by witnessing the police raiding their schools. Adem Güneş, a professor in Fatih University's psychological counseling and guidance department, told Today's Zaman that no one with guns in their hands should be near children. “Witnessing a raid carried out on a school that a child is attached to hurts that child's feelings and [negatively] impacts his perspective on life,” Güneş added.
Investigation launched into Turkish charity Kimse Yok Mu
In April, an investigation was launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the prominent charity organization Kimse Yok Mu (Is Anybody There) on charges of terrorism, which has also been met with strong reactions from experts that questioned how a charity can be accused of terrorism for delivering aid to those in need.
Criticizing the terrorism investigation of the charity, Kimse Yok Mu lawyer Muhittin Yılmaz said targeting a charity that has become the pride of Turkey for its charitable activities around the world shows the extent to which the Turkish judiciary has deteriorated. Pointing to a court decision ordering that the investigation against Kimse Yok Mu remain confidential, the lawyer said the gag order shows that the investigation file is empty, adding that it gives the impression that the prosecutor is trying to formulate a crime rather than investigate an existing one.
Trustees appointed to Koza İpek, Kaynak Holdings
Companies belonging to Koza İpek Holding were raided on Sept. 9 by police seeking financial documents after a court issued a search warrant. The Finance Ministry's Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), which conducted the raids, failed to find any illegal activities or transactions after thoroughly investigating the holding's files and records.
However, on Oct. 26, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office ordered that Koza İpek Holding be placed under the management of a trustee panel while an investigation continues looking into the group's purported ties to US-based scholar Fethullah Gülen, who is currently wanted for “being the head of and managing a terror organization.”
Two days after the court decision, riot police stormed the headquarters of the İpek Media Group in İstanbul as journalists from the paper tried in vain to prevent them from entering the building. Moreover, trustees appointed to the boards of directors of the companies that make up Koza İpek Holding turned out to be either members or supporters of the AK Party, despite the fact that such trustees are required to be independent and objective.
Less than a month after the seizure of Koza İpek Holding, a similar decision was made concerning Kaynak Holding, a group that consists of 23 companies, and trustees were appointed. Kaynak Holding employs more than 8,000 people, and owns the largest publishing house in Turkey, Kaynak Publishing House, and the NT Mağazaları nationwide bookstore chain among a total of 100 publishing brands.
In one of the latest gov't-led moves against the Gülen movement, seven trustees were appointed to the Ufuk Publishing House on Dec. 25 over a connection to Kaynak Holding. The trustees were appointed after 15 police officers from the İstanbul Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit conducted a search at the publishing house on Dec. 23.
Speaking to Today's Zaman on the company's link to Kaynak Holding, Ufuk Publishing General Manager Bülent Kaynaroğlu said: “The only contact we have with Kaynak Holding is to purchase supplies. I don't know how they made a connection between our company and Kaynak Holding before a day had even passed after police took copies of our computer hard drives. The examination of the drives was obviously a sham because it would be impossible for them to find evidence backing their claims in such a short period of time.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's son Bilal Erdoğan, who moved to Italy in October of last year to finish his doctorate, which he started in 2007, has left Bologna citing security concerns, an local Italian daily claimed on Thursday.
Bologna-based ll Resto del Carlino claimed that Erdoğan recently sent farewell messages to his friends in Bologna, telling them that they decided to go back to İstanbul.
“Our security in Bologna has been a sensitive issue both for the Italian and the Turkish government,” he reportedly said in the message. Erdoğan son also promised to turn back to Bologna in a more “peaceful” environment, the daily claimed.
The claim follows a report by another Italian daily that the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office in Italy launched an investigation into Bilal Erdoğan on suspicion of money laundering.
The Italian newspaper ll Giornale reported last month that fugitive Turkish businessman and Young Party (GP) leader Cem Uzan's brother, Murat Hakan Uzan, filed a criminal complaint against Bilal Erdoğan last year at the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office, accusing him of violating both European and Italian financial laws based on the claim that when he moved to Italy in 2015, he brought with him large amounts of cash to launder in Italy. Bologna Chief Public Prosecutor Manuela Cavallo then reportedly decided to investigate the claims and opened an investigation.
Bilal Erdoğan, who was one of the prime suspects in Turkey's largest corruption case, which came to public attention on Dec. 17 and 25, 2013, settled in the city of Bologna in Italy along with his wife and children following the June 7, 2015 parliamentary election in which the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) founded by President Erdoğan lost its majority in Parliament.
The president's son moved to Italy to continue his Ph.D. education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna, where had previously pursued doctoral studies, and has enrolled his children in a school there. Bilal Erdoğan also reportedly asked for security guards from the Italian government.
In October of last year Twitter whistleblower Fuat Avni's claimed that Bilal Erdoğan went to Italy with large amounts of cash, saying that Bilal flew to Italy on Sept. 27, 2015 and planned to remain there for a while and possibly bring family members over at a later time. Avni wrote: “They [the Erdoğan family] are planning to keep Bilal in Italy until the [Nov. 1] election. They will determine whether he will be coming back according to the situation after the election.” Bilal Erdoğan still lives in Italy with his family.

The European Union has abandoned those who are defending freedom in Turkey

He reveals the stakes of the agreement negotiated between the European Union and Turkey – not to have to assume the consequences of the deliberate destabilisation of Syria in exchange for 3 billion Euros per year and ignoring the dictatorship which is currently being set up by Ankara.

In September 2015, close to 3,000 Syrian refugees began a march toward Edirne, which is Turkey’s open door to Europe. Their objective was to cross the frontier and walk to Germany. Normally, the Turkish police forbids any form of meeting – even three people – but this time they simply watched as the long line of the 3,000 Syrian refugees shuffled by. At first we were unable to understand the reason for this show of tolerance, but very quickly, it became clear that it was a signal sent to Europe.
Two months later, in November, the G20 summit met in Antalya, and bargaining about the refugees occupied the negotiating table. We understand that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wanted to sit at the table with a strong hand. He was basically saying - «If you don’t do what I want, I’ll open the borders and you’ll see what you’ll see.» It was a filthy bargaining chip, and it seems that the European capitals had no other choice than to accept his bluff.
When the G20 met, the Western leaders found themselves faced with a Turkish President who was quite openly using blackmail. The account of the haggling was published by the Greek site Euro2day.gr, and the content was used ostentatiously by Mr. Erdoğan to build himself a showcase for his own interior politics. According to the accounts, the bargaining between the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the Turkish President took place as follows -
— Donald Tusk : «We have agreed to pay 3 billion Euros over two years, but I have just learned that [Ahmet] Davutoğlu, the Turkish Prime Minister, wants 3 billion per year.»
— Recep Tayyip Erdoğan : «If you’re thinking of only paying 3 billion over two years, there’s no point talking about it, we’ll just open the borders with Greece and Bulgaria and we’ll load the refugees into buses. »
— Donald Tusk : «The European Union is in difficulty [since the terrorist attacks of the 13th November 2015 in France], and the Schengen agreements run the risk of being cancelled. That’s why we want to reach an agreement with you»
— Recep Tayyip Erdoğan : «If we can’t reach an agreement, how are you going to stop the refugees? Are you going to kill them?»
This dialogue demonstrates Mr. Erdoğan’s patronising attitude, but the really tragic dialogue came later in the same meeting, between Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and the Turkish President. The Commission had twice postponed the publication of the report on the erosion of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms in Turkey.
It was a gift offered to Mr Erdoğan, who was then preparing for the 1st November elections. In the accounts of the Antalya summit, we note that Mr. Juncker clearly recognised this, declaring: «The postponement of this evaluation until after the elections was critical.»
Once again, Erdoğan looked down his nose: « The postponement did not help us to win the elections. In fact, the report is an insult. Who wrote it? Why didn’t you come to see me to learn what’s really happening?» Jean-Claude Juncker replied: «It was you who asked us to postpone the publication of the report. I feel as if I’ve been manipulated.»
Europe had indeed been manipulated. It had proposed a bribe of 3 billion Euros to Turkey to keep its borders closed, and had promised to close its eyes to the despotic régime of Mr. Erdoğan. But the Turkish President had understood the impossible situation in which his interlocutors found themselves.
He wasn’t satisfied with the postponement of the publication of the report, nor the offer of 3 billion Euros, he wanted not only 3 billion more, but also even more complaisant silence – and he got it all. On the day the minutes of the meeting were published, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was in Ankara.
During the joint Press conference organised with Davutoğlu, the correspondant from Die Welt reminded the Chancellor of her prevuious criticism of Turkey, and asked her why she had chosen to keep silent.
Mme. Merkel off-handedly replied that the point had already been discussed. As for Davutoğlu, he declared: «The fact that you ask this question is proof of the freedom of Press which exists here in Turkey.»
Indeed, in Turkey, journalists were free to ask questions, on the condition that they run the risk of losing their job or going to prison. This situation has made Turkey into one of the largest prisons for journalists in the world.
Lies
While Davutoğlu declared that «... in Turkey, no journalist is in prison because of his journalistic activities», I was sitting in front of the television in the prison to which I had been sent for having published information concerning the delivery of arms to Syria by the Turkish secret services. And in the isolation of my cell, I shouted: «What a huge lie!» It is true that two weeks after this Press conference, the Constitutional Court decided that we were to be released on conditional liberty, on the grounds that we had done nothing other than our jobs as journalists. In hindsight, we see a Turkish Prime Minister who lied to Europe and a German Chancellor who gave the impression that she believed his lies.
Turkey, which fought its war of independence against the occupying forces of the West, was nonetheless founded on the basis of Western values. Its leader, Atatürk , built this young Republic on European values, beginning with secularism.
Turkish democrats have always proclaimed Western values - freedom, the supremacy of law, Human Rights, secularism. As for Mr. Erdoğan, during an interview he accorded to journalist Nilgün Cerrahoğlu in 1996, he declared: «Democracy is a tramway – you climb on to get where you want to go, and then you climb off.»
Today, twenty years later, it is with sadness that we must watch European leaders rushing towards the tramway from which Erdoğan has just descended, abandoning beside the tracks all those in Turkey who adhere to these democratic values.
The West is sacrificing its historic principles for the profit of its daily interests, and as a result of this double game, is losing all its natural allies. By saying : «Keep those refugees away from us and do whatever you like at home», Europe is hiring a concentration camp outside of its own frontiers, and is closing its eyes to the oppression exerted by the willing guardian of the camp. This is not only a shameful thing for the West, it is also shameful for Humanity.
This is not a fight between the West and the East, nor a fight between Europe and Turkey, it’s a fight between those, whether in the West or the East, who believe in the freedom of the Press, in Human Rights, in Democracy, and those who trample on these freedoms. If these people are beaten, the losers will not only be the Democrats of Turkey, but all of those universal values like secularism, the equality between men and women, freedom of thought, and the independence of justice .
In case of defeat, Europe will have increasing difficulty in defending its frontiers from the pressure of despots which it created with its own hands.

According to Rai News 24, Italian police spokesman Lt. Colonel Domenico Grimaldi accused the Saudi legation in Rome of facilitating the escape of Bilal Erdoğan who was detained for money laundering allegations. Major developments in Syria and Turkey

This week has been marked by two major events: the USA and Russia agreed to a common plan for military coordination in Syria and the failed coup in Turkey has been followed by a massive purge of the Turkish elites.
Syria:
The Russians had really no option but to accept to work with the USA in Syria. They way in which they did it was very elegant, however: Lavrov and Kerry have agreed to a joint long-term ceasefire whose exact terms are to remain secret, which indicates to me that the Russians forced the US into concessions which the latter don’t want to be made public. How do we know that it was Russian who forced concessions on the USA and not the other way around? Simple – there was no US “leak” to the media and the Russian bombers have resumed their operation with a new intensity. Besides, it is pretty obvious that in Syria at least Moscow holds all the cards now and Kerry has therefore no means to put pressure on Russia even if he wanted to.
But the main development for Syria is still the coup in Turkey.
Turkey:
What happened in Turkey is huge. So big, in fact, that I even suspect that the numerous rumors about an Erdogan-orchestrated false flag could have been started by the US propaganda machine (since when to even mainstream media outlets even discuss false flags?). Not everybody bought into the false flag theory, not Sibel Edmonds and not M. K. Bhadrakumar. Not only did these two reject the false flag theory, they also explained in detail the role of the USA in this coup. To their testimony I can only add that I have been contacted by several well-informed readers from countries neighboring Turkey who have also told me that at least a “faction” inside the USA has had advance knowledge of the coup.
There are now reports that Russia also had advanced warning and that Putin personally warned Erdogan. I won’t repost the full FARS article here, but I strongly recommend reading it:

If all of the above is true, that might also explain why some have sincerely felt that this might have been a false flag. If the Russians really did warn Erdogan, then his best move would have been to let the coup begin to unmask all the conspirators and their sympathizers and only then to crack down on them.
The magnitude of the purge in Turkey is nothing short of amazing: Erdogan is clearly engaged on a massive and brutal campaign to ruthlessly purge entire social classes which he perceives, probably correctly, as hostile to his rule. So while we can rejoice that a US-backed coup has failed, we should have no illusions about how is now in power in Turkey: a ruthless and unpredictable megalomaniac who should never, ever, be trusted.
There are, however, objective reasons to also welcome these developments.
First and foremost, the Turkish military is now being decapitated and it will be in no condition whatsoever to try to crush the Kurdish resistance or, even less so, to invade northern Syria.
Second, Erdogan and Daesh are apparently on a collision course (the official Turkish version is that they did the airport bombing) and that means that Daesh lost a key supporter.
Third, now that the Turkish threat has been neutralized for the foreseeable future (5 years at least), Russia is in a much better position to deal with the Takfiri crazies in Syria and with their Wahabi backers in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
Fourth, there is a non-trivial possibility that Turkey will now openly declare the US/NATO/EU as an enemy of the regime. Not only is the USA harboring the CIA-controlled Gulen, but it turns out that some of the aircraft involved in the coup took off from Incirlik. Considering that Incirlik is basically US-run, this means that the US fingerprints are all over the coup. Right now Erdogan is still too weak to take on the US and NATO, but if he succeeds in completely purging his enemies from the centers of power in Turkey, I would not put it past him to simply leave NATO completely. This is not likely, only possible, but should that happen that would be a formidable loss for the Empire.
Fifth, there are interesting conversations taking place in the public debate in Russia. Zhirinovski, who is often used by the Kremlin to “test the waters” for various Kremlin-backed ideas, is now suggesting that Russia should form a trilateral military alliance with Iran and Turkey. Again, there are many formidable obstacles to overcome before anything like that happens but, again, this is now at least possible (maybe not an alliance, but some kind of cooperation is likely)
Sixth, for the Syrian government the failed coup is quite literally God-sent. Not that Assad and Erdogan will ever have a love-fest again, but Assad must now realize that his most formidable adversary has now been neutered and that this completely changes the strategic dynamic of the war for the liberation of Syria from the Takfiris. Add to this the agreement between Russia and the USA which, however insincere and temporary, at least precludes a direct US attack on Syria (as demanded by the 51 Neocon crazies at Foggy Bottom). Add to this the very real possibility that Trump will be in the White House next year and I would suggest that, all in all, things sure look way better today for Syria than they did just a couple of weeks ago.
Seven, no matter what happens next, Turkey as a whole has been tremendously weakened by this coup and the subsequent purge. Not only that, but this one if far from over, Edmonds even speaks of a possible “2nd wave coup”. But even if that does not happen, and even if Erdogan remains in power, the Kurds now will be facing a much weakened enemy and might decide that it is “now or never” for them to try to free themselves form the Turkish yoke. So there is a very real possibility that Turkey will simply fall apart (again, “possibility” is not the same as “likelihood”). But since we are still far away from this possibility actually materializing, it would be premature to go there. However, even if Turkey does not break up, a much weakened Turkey is likely to have to agree to the kind of concessions which a powerful Turkey would never have accepted: this is not only true for the Kurds, but also for the Russians and Iranians. In other words, now is the ideal time to begin some very intense and far reaching negotiations to try to force Turkey to become a responsible and predictable actor in the region.
The biggest problem with all this is, of course, the rise of the kind of neo-Ottoman Islamism which Erdogan has promoted to come to power and which is now infecting large segments of the Turkish society. There is now a real risk for Turkey to go down the terrible path which Algeria had to take to deal with the FIS and, later the GIA (the big difference being that the FIS never really got to power). This is why the neo-Ottoman Islamists are now ruthlessly purging both the secular Kemalists and Islamist Gulenists (a weird de-facto alliance for sure).
Russia and Iran have to be extremely proactive in trying to “channel” Erdogan into some kind of semi-sane form of state Islamism which would not serve as a Petri dish for the kind of horrors which costs so many lives in Algeria. The good news is that Turkey certainly has the potential of finding a unique form of conservative Sunni Islam which does not have to find inspiration in the Wahabi crazies of Daesh or the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Maybe Chechnia under Kadyrov could at least in some aspects inspire a modern form of modern Islamic traditionalism?
Again, the main problem is Erdogan himself. But since this is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future, all the countries neighboring Turkey have to accept this reality, however uncomfortable, and try to make the best of a radically new situation.
For the time being we reasonably can assume that Erdogan will prevail. If that is indeed what happens, he will be way too busy to deal with major international issues. What is certain is that Erdogan has imposed a three months long state of emergency and that he will be meeting with Putin in early August. Whether Putin “saved Erdogan” as some claim, or whether Russia just gave him advanced warning of the coup, it is pretty darn clear that Erdogan now vitally needs Putin’s support and that Putin knows that. Soon the world will find out what exactly Putin had in mind when, following the downing of the SU-24, he announced sanctions against Turkey and then added “Одними помидорами вы не отделаетесь” (you will not get away just with tomatoes). There will be a price to pay for Erdogan and Erdogan knows it. But Putin also knows that now is the time to negotiate with Erdogan, so the price will be substantial, but reasonable. At the end of the day, Russia and Turkey need each other, at least to prevent another, it would be the 13th, Russian-Turkish war.

A massive fire erupted near a NATO base in western Turkey. Authorities are investigating the fire as a possible act of anti-American sabotage.
The inferno started on Sunday evening in western Turkey. The fire blew through the grassy wooded area and is now perilously near NATO’s military base pushed forward by strong winds.
CNNTurk reports that the fire threatens a number of populated areas, and has already impacted a home for the elderly and its adjacent garden, T24 News reports. The channel also reports that anti-American “sabotage” in the wake of the attempted overthrow of the Erdogan government is suspected.
The fire threatens the Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) base at Şirinyer (Buca) in İzmir, Turkey. LANDCOM is tasked with supporting US troops to enhance reaction time and the unit is equipped to respond to international crises.
Although Washington maintains its largest overseas nuclear arsenal in Turkey, consisting of up to 90 tactical nuclear weapons, the US atomic weapons stockpile is stored at Incirlik air base and no such weapons of mass destruction are reportedly stored at the Izmir base.
The fire is not fully subdued despite hours of effort along with the use of firefighting helicopters and airplanes conducting water drops according to local news outlets.
Sunday’s fire comes in the wake of the failed attempt to overthrow the Erdogan government last week that the regime has blamed on US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. The country’s Laber Minister created a stir when he said on live television during an interview with HaberTurk that “the US is behind the coup.” This hyperbolic statement, condemned by the US State Department, was followed by a threat from Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yidlirim that Ankara would go to war with “any country” that supports Fethullah Gulen — a direct reference to the United States.
The US has repeatedly informed Turkey that they are unable to extradite the alleged mastermind of the coup, Fethullah Gulen, under US law without sufficient evidence. A recent poll shows that only 17% of Turks welcome the United States in the country and with Ankara shifting towards a more nationalistic posture attacks against US installations may become more likely in the wake of the failed coup.

The three most important regiments involved in the Turkey Attempted Coup plot and implementation have been part (members) of NATO’s Rapid Deployable Corps (NRDC) since 2003.
A group of plotters of the failed Turkish Coup Attempt used a WhatsApp group to communicate with each other. Based on well-documented information and established identities gathered from these intercepted communications, at least three out of the five coupist regiments were (and still are) part of NATO’s Rapid Deployable Corps. Further, the group used the emblem and slogan used by NATO’s Rapid Deployable Corps: “Peace at home, peace in the world.”
The intercepted communications also expose the role of the CIA-Gulen network within Turkey’s police force, and how it readily welcomed and aided the Failed Coup Attempt.

Turkish troops fired on U.S.-backed Kurdish militia fighters in northern Syria on Thursday, highlighting the complications of an incursion meant to secure the border region against both Islamic State and Kurdish advances.
Syrian rebels backed by Turkish special forces, tanks and warplanes entered Jarablus, one of Islamic State's last strongholds on the Turkish-Syrian border, on Wednesday.
But President Tayyip Erdogan and senior government officials have made clear the aim of "Operation Euphrates Shield" is as much about stopping the Kurdish YPG militia seizing territory and filling the void left by Islamic State as it is about eliminating the ultra-hardline Islamist group itself.
A Turkish security source said the army shelled the People's Protection Units (YPG) south of Jarablus. Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency described the action as warning shots.
Gunfire and explosions echoed around hills in the region on Thursday, a day after the incursion first began.
Some of the blasts were triggered as Turkish security forces cleared mines and booby traps left by retreating Islamic State militants, according to Nuh Kocaaslan, the mayor of Karkamis, which sits just across the border from Jarablus. He said three Turkish-backed Syrian rebels were killed but no Turkish troops.
Turkey, which has NATO's second biggest armed forces, demanded that the YPG retreat to the east side of the Euphrates river within a week. The Kurdish militia had moved west of the river earlier this month as part of a U.S.-backed operation, now completed, to capture the city of Manbij from Islamic State.
Ankara views the YPG as a threat because of its close links to Kurdish militants waging a three-decade-old insurgency on its own soil. It has been alarmed by the YPG's gains in northern Syria since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, fearing it could extend Kurdish control along Turkish borders and fuel the ambitions of Kurdish insurgents in Turkey.
Turkey's stance has put it at odds with Washington, which sees the YPG as a rare reliable ally on the ground in Syria, where Washington is trying to defeat Islamic State while also opposing President Bashar al-Assad's government in a complex, multi-sided, five-year-old civil war.
The Syrian Kurdish force is one of the most powerful militias in Syria and regarded as the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed alliance formed last October to fight Islamic State.
Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik said the Kurdish PYD party, the political arm of the YPG, wanted to unite Kurdish-controlled cantons east of Jarablus with those further west. "We cannot let this happen," he said.
