An activist has described how officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terror Command accosted her while she waited at the bus stop. Initially asking to have ‘a word’ the officers changed their mind and fled when the campaigner got out her mobile phone and started filming.

Emma is an anti-militarist activist, who is currently working with a group planning protests against the NATO summit, due to be held in Newport, South Wales this September. She is convinced that the officers were intending to ask her for information relating to those protests.

Emma says she had walked a short distance from her flat to the bus stop, calling on a neighbour on the way. She said she had scarcely stopped walking before she was approached, and believes they may have followed her from her home. One officer flashed his warrant card and identified himself as Counter-Terror. He used Emma’s name, and asked if he could ‘have a word for a minute’. Her response was, ‘yes as long as I can film it’.

The officer then appeared to change his mind about speaking to Emma, attempted to hide his face and move away. Bizarrely, a second man then got involved and tried to distract Emma by persistently asking her for directions. When she asked the second man if he too was an officer from Counter Terrorism both men walked to their car and drove away.

Emma may well have been correct in her suspicions. Counter Terror Command is now the home of the secretive National Domestic Extremism Unit (NDEU), the unit that operated Mark Kennedy and other undercover police officers. These officers infiltrated a variety of protest groups, and used intimate relationships with a number of women to further their deception.

The operation of the NDEU was moved from ACPO to the Met’s Counter Terror Command in 2011, but it is known to continue its use of undercover officers as well as other ‘covert human intelligence sources’, or CHIS – otherwise known as informants. Last November police faced fierce criticism after a Cambridge University Student made a secret recording with a hidden camera of an officers attempt to recruit him.


Another member of the anti-NATO group has also told us he is making a complaint after he was recently stopped by police while driving. The police officer carrying out the stop identified him as a ‘known protester’, asked what his ‘plans for the year’ might be and told him, ‘we’ll be watching you’.

Emma’s solicitor, Raj Chada, has written to the police to ask for an explanation, and expressed concern that such an approach could constitute an invasion of her rights to a private life under article 8 of European Convention on Human Rights.

He said, “We have received instructions that a number of our clients have been approached by “counter terrorism police” over the last few days and weeks. At present, it is not clear the reason for the approach and we have requested further info from the police.”

Emma is concerned that police actions of this sort could leave people feeling intimidated. She said that speaking out about what happened, and getting support from the people around her made her feel more confident.

“I think this can happen to almost anyone involved in protest, and probably happens quite a lot, but people don’t want to talk about it. They might feel isolated and not sure about what to do.

“I think the main message I would be keen to convey is that if it happens to you, you don’t have to be drawn into their conspiracy of silence, it is their secret not yours. I think it’s important for people to have some one to turn to so they can talk things over or get legal advice without fear of repercussions.”

On 4th and 5th September 2014 the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport will be hosting this year's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit.

A military alliance that consists of 28 member states across North America and Europe, NATO was originally established in 1949 as a Western counter power to the Soviet Union, ostensibly due to anxieties about the spread of communism. Since the collapse of the USSR it has found meaning in its existence through ‘humanitarian intervention’. Humanitarian intervention by NATO doesn’t mean, food, water and safer spaces for vulnerable people around the world. Instead, humanitarian intervention means military acts of war. Supposedly bombing, displacement and violence is to quash conflicts, and result in peace. Despite history repeatedly showing us that such actions only exacerbates conflict, creating more victims and escalating suffering.

The selection of where these ‘humanitarian interventions’ are prioritised points to an imperialist agenda, as they are directly linked to the strategic, economic and political benefit of the elite of NATO member countries. Opportunistically using conflicts with the purported intention of ending them as a mask to further their interests. This selective interventionism has led to criticism of failure to intervene in places of less importance, often where vastly greater atrocities are being committed. Sometimes these inconvenient atrocities are not just being ignored, but have NATO complicity, if not by members themselves such as Turkey's atrocities against the Kurds in the 1990’s, then their client states like Indonesia's invasion of East Timor.

The most recent ‘intervention’ was in Libya, where numerous war crimes were committed; from bombing built up areas included media outlets and civilian homes to supporting rebels that delivered collective punishment to whole villages for supposedly "supporting the Gaddafi regime". Libya is the country with the most oil in Africa; low in sulphur and close to European markets. After the invasion, NATO countries took oil from Libya as payment for their services.

NATO's role in the world is to serve the interest of the same elite that has caused and is profiteering from the economic crisis; the 1%, the capitalist class. They get rich through our poverty and are waging class war against their own populations in addition to the war they are waging globally.


NATO is the long arm of capitalism, expropriating non-renewable energy resources where it likes, and making sure that other great powers that could challenge the US's hegemony don’t get their hands on them. Natural resources are a major factor in NATO’s decisions to invade countries. This is to protect the wealth of the capitalists that are making a lot of money out of oil, despite climate change threatening life on earth as we know it.
It has been more than two decades since the summit was last held in the UK, Gwent police have already started the hype, preparing for crowds of over 15,000 and scaremongering about cyber attacks, dubbing the summit as:
"the biggest security event the UK has ever hosted"
that might explain why they have been staging an overblown terror attack training exercise and approaching people in the street.

In these austere times, which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in our society the hardest, government funding to NATO is grotesque, and the costs of this summit is alarming. Food poverty is a public health crisis with many people going hungry, cuts in basic services a local level are staggering, Newport itself is set for £34 million in cuts by 2017.

CND have stated they will be protesting, as have Stop the War, a large group of people from across the political spectrum of Socialists, Greens, Anarchists, Welsh Nationalists, all kinds of anti-Militarists and many others have begun organising as NO NATO Newport and holding regular open organising meetings.

There have already been actions opposing the NATO summit in Newport. Belgian police have arrested almost 500 peace activists outside the NATO HQ in Brussels. Protesters attempted to storm the building, but were met with a heavy-handed response from hundreds of officers. Demonstrators say the march was called to protest NATO's hawkish intervention policies. For more on this RT talks to one of the activists who actually took part. Hans Lammerant, a spokesman for 'NATO Game Over', joins us now from Brussels.

I do hope all the police involved in looking after NATO in Newport in a month's time will take the time to get familiar with Operation Gladio and prepare arrest warrants for any and all NATO staff who were involved in this programme of political massacres
The NATO criminals need only be pulled in for questioning of course.

We have become familiar with the visions of carnage in far off lands but is that chaos required in the west in order for the further development of the NWO. To allow the charismatic world man of peace to appear and wave his deceptive magic wand?

The US has militarisation of police but good old blighty is just about holding a semblance of normality, yet just under the surface of many tolerant moderates is a gathering anger towards Islam that only needs a few more catalysts. Enoch Powells "rivers of blood" may have been a few decades too early.

Lets hope and pray the NATO meeting passes with just relevant protests.
