Is James Bond’s Skyfall really about false flag terrorism?

Is Skyfall a message to the ordinary intelligence agent and other security personnel who secretly knows that it is these agencies that are perpetrating terror against the UK?

In the film, Bond combats terrorism against the UK, including a 7/7-type attack – problem is the terrorism is from a (former) MI6 agent.

The film has an overt, propaganda message that the intelligence services would like audiences to accept. That is, the country needs brave, loyal agents who work in the shadows to defend it from terrorism that could come from anywhere. There are other overt messages. Old style muscle Bonds need to modernise and deal with new tech terrorism. In the film, old Bond symbolically dies and is eventually replaced with a Bond who still has old style techniques but is up on the new tech. The propaganda message is that the security services need to be able to spy on us using new technology. Another message is that despite the fact the public wants the intelligence services to be accountable, it doesn’t work. Another important theme is betrayal. At the beginning of the film, Bond wants to help a dying fellow agent but his boss M tells him to ignore the agent and get on with the mission. M then sacrifices Bond. We then learn that M’s sacrifice turned Bond’s enemy, former MI6 agent, Silva into a formidable enemy of the agency. But despite similarities with Silva and M’s treachery, Bond kills Silva. Yet, M eventually dies as a symbolic response to her own betrayal.

But is there a hidden message in the film aimed at intelligence officers and wider security personnel? Three things point to this. Firstly, the only terrorism the film shows is that created by a UK intelligence officer. Secondly, the service is trying to obtain a list of NATO agents embedded in terrorist organisations. This screams Gladio. Where, in the 1980s, NATO, MI6, and CIA created supposedly left-wing terror groups like the Red Brigade who bombed and killed their way through Europe. Thirdly, M is hostile to being questioned by MPs who want to know why MI6 messed up. Fourthly, like the discovery of false flag terrorism, MI6’s mistake could bring disaster to the service - the sky would fall.

It is the lyrics of Adelie’s song, Skyfall, that implies that the film is about false flags. Now, the song very easily fits into the overt message but it can also explain the hidden message. Vigilant Citizen has pointed out the occult nature of the opening credits but also look at the lyrics. The chorus says:
Let the skyfall, when it crumbles – real message: our cover story about terrorism may fall because more people are discovering the truth
We will stand tall – we will defend the fact that part of our job is to protect the country
And face the music together – but the truth is we are also attacking the country and even though I’m not doing it, I have to accept the fact that I am implicated and will be blamed.

It should also be noted that the film director, Sam Mendes, was inspired by the film The Dark Knight. That film was a total headf**k. It said heroes, like Batman, have to be the villain, or take on the villain profile, and promote myths to protect the county. It’s message was an attempt to confuse the public into being sympathetic to CIA death squads who go around the world killing innocent people. It is an acknowledgement on the part of the director that our secret heroes are doing evil.

Bond writer, Ian Fleming, knew about deep politics. He was a naval intelligence officer and is rumoured to have helped Nazis flee Germany at the end of the war. Including Hitler. During the Cold War, he told a TV presenter that the intelligence agencies ‘are aware of a third force’. And indeed, Spectre was meant to be that third force based around the New World Order. He, therefore, was aware that he was inadvertently working not for his country but for the NWO evil. The comic hero film Bonds reflected this particularly in films like Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, while Diamonds Are Forever was based on the conspiracy (and probably disinfo) Gemstone Files. But Craig Daniel’s Bond is more serious, perhaps a reflection of the War on Terror. The Cold War was always a distant battle for most people whereas so-called Islamic extremism is supposed to be happening on your doorstep.

In Daniel’s second film, Quantum of Solace, he fights an attempt by the enemy to make money by preventing the destruction of a new plane and therefore preventing a plunge in the company’s stock value. This is straight out of 9/11 and bets on plane companies. But most people wouldn’t make the link to 9/11. So, who was this part of the plot aimed at?

So, this War on Terror has thrown up all sorts of problems for the NWO that didn’t exist in the Cold War, even the issue of loyalty of the average to the NWO of their own foot soldiers. But they can handle it. Intelligence agents may suspect that Silva is actually right and he is the avenging angel and not Bond. Silva declares war on the intelligence service that betrayed him and is betraying the country. The NWO feels they will get away with it in the end. Because the foot soldiers are implicated in their crimes so have to go along with it. The film shows that the NWO can even admit to them that they know the dilemma that they have created for them, and are advising them they have no choice but to go along with it. And in the end Bond kills the avenging angel.

We’ll see what Bond’s next film, Spectre, has to say for itself.

SPECTRE HACKS AND STEALS ‘SPECTRE’!

I thought it odd the new Bond film will be titled SPECTRE, as I have recently written an article about how the secretive organization from the film mirrors the real cabals and cartels that rule the real world, and in particular the black markets. Indeed, SPECTRE is presented early on in From Russia with Love with this very feature – they are international, as opposed to SMERSH being Russian, and play nation states off against one another. Transitioning from the Soviet-affiliated SMERSH in the first Bond novel, Casino Royale, SMERSH transforms into SPECTRE, a formidable “terrorist” organization from the ambiguous East.

It is telling that back in the 50s and 60s Fleming was already predicting the transition from the communist threat to the international terrorist threat – something that gave me the indication that Fleming novels are worth a deeper look. With the recent fiasco that is, in my analysis, a staged marketing trick, Sony claims to have been hacked by North Korea and had the SPECTRE script leaked, as well as the “hacker terrorists” threatening 9/11 style attacks on theaters (?) that play Franco and Rogen’s The Interview.

Casino Royale Ca$h Options

I suspect more is at work, given the plot of Skyfall surrounded a former Mi6 operative, Mr. Silva (Javier Bardem), playing a hell-bent hacker intent on wreaking vengeful havoc on M (Judy Dench) and all of Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It is surely not coincidence that in Skyfall Silva has “back door” technology that brings to mind PROMIS software or the recent hubbub involving NSA spying and Snowden. With these recent news events in mind, an analysis of Skyfall is overdue. In the reboot of Casino Royale, we saw Bond engaged in a bout with an associate of what we can assume will be SPECTRE, the infamous LeChiffre, and in my analysis of Casino Royale, I noted as follows concerning the real associations that can be made between LeChiffre’s secret organization and the real cartels that run our world:

“In the beginning (of the Casino Royale novel), however, Bond is not after SMERSH, but a wealthy, disfigured rogue who stuck out on his own and created a “fifth column” from SMERSH, named LeChiffre. LeChiffre translates as “the cypher,” letting us know more is at work here. LeChiffre, according to Bond writer Ian MacIntyre, was based on British Satanist/occultist Aleister Crowley.

In fact, Ian Fleming, it has recently been claimed by researcher Anthony Masters, was responsible for crafting the plot to lure Rudolph Hess to Scotland based on a bogus astrological chart that tickled Hess’ fancy, created by Crowley. The plot worked, apparently, and Hess parachuted into Scotland and was captured. LeChiffre, “the cypher,” has curious features, and like many Bond villains a strange sexual appetite and fixation, in the same vein as Crowley.”

And in regard to put options and dirty financial dealings before 9/11 we can see a curious parallel:

“While LeChiffre funds an uprising, he simultaneously makes a call to his broker to sell a million puts on Skyfleet, an amorphous airline. We get the impression LeChiffre plans a terror event that will in some way benefit his selling of the put options. In terms of esoteric analysis, this begins to look strikingly like the events prior to 9/11 that those “in the know,” know about. Prior to the terror events of that day, numerous puts had been placed on United Airline stocks, resulting in much speculation as to clear prior knowledge on the part of many in the power structure. As you can see from this mainstream report, the establishment blames “rogue traders.” Absurdly, the report purports the laughable line that the retard phony terrorists lurking in caves in Afghanistan were the masterminds behind not only the amazingly complex black operation of 9/11, but also the put options and insider trading. Why, Al Qaeda is virtually omnipotent and omnipresent! And in the narrative of Casino Royale, that is exactly what LeChiffre attempts to do, as he has engineered a bombing to occur on the release of a new prototype plane to be unveiled by Skyfleet.”

Quantum of No Solace

Moving to the sequel in the rebooted series, Quantum of Solace, alchemy comes to the fore in Bond’s failed attempt to “bond” with the feminine. Quantum is the idea of matter or quantity or prima materia, and for Bond, a bit of peace and solace is never attained – primarily because he is a programmed killer, and the final betrayal of Vesper Lynd in Casino can only bring forth a cold, “The bitch is dead” from a unremorseful 007. This is crucial for understanding Fleming’s novels, as they are just as littered with esoteric images as the films. Quantum of Solace is a Fleming short story about Bond, but it is not like the film, aside from Bond’s inability to permanently pair with any babes (outside of getting laid). So, alchemically we saw the Quantum villains have names that are colors, Mr. White, Mr. Green, etc.

Laced with esoteric and occult imagery, Fleming’s novels relate the dark side of mind control in three stories in particular: Casino Royale, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and You Only Live Twice. In Casino we learn that Bond is a programmed killer through his “00” status, in On Her Majesty’s we learn Blofeld is brainwashing young women under the auspices of treating allergies, ultimately plotting to attack England with a bioweapon, and in You Only Live Twice, Bond undergoes a blow to the head that wipes his mind and gives him amnesia. Thus, the “mind controlled assassin” is very much an aspect of the Bond canon.

In regard to Quantum, the organization that I suspect will be a front for SPECTRE, we learned:

“…Quantum is “everywhere,” including inside British Intelligence. Quantum is a shadowy international group that uses corporate fronts. In fact, as researcher Phillip Collins has noted, Quantum bears a striking resemblance to the real international intelligence “get the job done” privatized operation described by Col. L. Fletcher Prouty, titled ‘The Secret Team.” The Secret Team functioned as a kind of corporate intelligence for hire squad that did what needed to be done. That is precisely what Quantum is, and Quantum is itself both – the team and the corporation. Dominic Greene we learn runs the organization, whose main front is the Green Movement.

In fact, Greene at one point in the film blames government as the problem, and touts privatization, while demonizing “government.” Greene is an apostle for the Green Movement, and claims to support numerous environmental causes, and brings to mind someone like Al Gore. Another interesting point of relevance for reality here is that the Green Movement itself arose out of the Nazi and Europhile mind as a needed return to so-called “nature,” which functions under the guise of caring for the planet, but which is actually a corporate front for the strategic controlling of resources. That is exactly what Dominic Greene does in Quantum of Solace!”

Quantum involved the green movement as a scam to rape underdeveloped nations, much like the UN and IMF in real life, assuming the perceptive viewer will make the connection. It is not accidental the middle of the film contained the massive presentation of the All-seeing Eye during the operatic presentation of La Tosca in Bregenz, and the church is within the eye. The message here being the control of all aspects of reality, from economics, to environment to church, is encompassed within the grasp of the great eye – the secretive organization (SPECTRE) operates in a technocratic panopticon that sees all.

And what Bond-relevant entity utilized the eye as its symbol? The classic logo of British Intelligence, Mi5, as seen at bottom. Is Quantum of Solace telling us on a deeper level that the Anglo-establishment has gained control of all areas of life, including revolutionary movements and the arts, all subservient to the City of London? I’ll let the reader be the judge, but certainly Quantum was telling more than even Casino Royale revealed.

The Sky Falls With Skyfall

When we come to Skyfall, similar themes appear. Skyfall is about Bond’s past – his family residence, as well as intelligence operations in a new world of cyber (virtual) reality. As usual, the famous opening sequence reveals the esoteric plot elements of the plot to come – from Bond’s katabasis (death and resurrection) to his psyche being fractured from his assassination programming. Swastikas are again present, like past Bond films, indicating in my analysis the manipulation of both the left and the right. For example, in Goldeneye, the opening sequence includes scantily clad hotties tearing down old Soviet statues, but what is actually at work in the opening sequence is a clear presentation of dialectics – the manipulation by the Eye of both sides of the Cold War dialectic.

This is also why Bond receives the Order of Lenin in A View to a Kill. This seeming contradiction is made coherent when we understand Mr. Greene’s words in Quantum of Solace: “You should know something about the people I work with. We deal with the left or the right, with dictators or liberators.” In Skyfall, however, we are entering Bond’s subconscious, and sinking with him to the abyss of feath, as Bond is accidently shot by Moneypenny in a botched operation to retrieve a hard drive that contains Mi6 agents embedded with NATO.

Bond sinks to the ocean floor and is pulled into a black hole in the ocean’s floor, where a blood skull appears, leading to Bond shooting shadow selves. The shots break the glass images indicating the fractured psyche Bond has due to his training, torture, and numerous instances of trauma, and the images of pillars signify the deepest recesses and foundations of Bond’s archetypal subconscious. The shadow self will appear in the figure of Bond’s nemesis, Mr. Silva, who, like Bond, is betrayed by M and Mi6. Bond is thus tempted to leave his secret service work because of past issues with his own disfigured archetypes of mother and father – he is an orphan. M thus becomes his mother figure, and numerous times in the film the association of M with the Queen and mother are made, indicating associated archetypes.

Bond will be tempted to deny his loyal patriotic fervor embodied in the figure of Silva, the “traitor.” As Bond sinks deeper and deeper in the title sequence, we see death’s-head, fiery torture (likely his own torture at the hands of LeChiffre), and Chinese fire dragons. The presentation of the dragon within the deep or leviathan is interesting, as Bond will venture Eastward in the film to Macau and interact with gangsters involved in the sex trade that work for Silva. The sequence ends with the camera entering Bond’s left eye, or the left-handed path, where we will see more of the traumatic circumstances that have made 007 into the killing machine he is.

As I’m sure readers are aware, the plot is about Mi6 being hacked by Silva and releasing the names of Mi6 agents over time. This oddly recalls the actual events of Richard Tomlinson which are recounted in his book The Big Breach, as Tomlinson reportedly did leak such names online. Is Silva a fictional version of a kind of Tomlinson/Assage hybrid? Possibly, as Silva is given a weird blonde hairdo reminiscent of Assange. Perhaps the idea of combining two so-called villains of Mi6 into a cyber-terror package was fitting. The intelligence agencies have played up the so-called threat of cyber terror for years, arguing that total control of the web is the only way to defeat all those hidden terrorists out there, and in Skyfall we even have Silva as the mastermind of a 7/7 style Underground bombing!

Simultaneous with his subway bombing, M is at a government hearing on humint being “old-fashioned,” and in response M reads a Tennyson poem about England still being an empire, but with new enemies. The new enemies are everyone and no one – hidden terrorists everywhere. So, a former Mi6 agent is responsible for the 7/7-style event in the film narrative, while in real life, 7/7 had curious connections to western intelligence that have never been adequately explained or addressed by the said establishment.


Like Achilles, Bond is vitally wounded and “resurrected” to return to duty, while a bombed Mi6 headquarters has relocated the recouped agency to an underground base, formerly Churchill’s World War II bunker. The consistent theme of the old versus the new appears throughout the film, as fans are given constant references to classic Bond guns like the Walther PPK and the sleek Aston Martin ride. With Bond’s new IT nerd Quartermaster, Bond must grapple with the realities of modern cyber-espionage supplanting classic methods of humint and assassinations. “Is Bond washed up?” is the film’s question, and thus we must go to Bond’s origins and psychological trauma to resolve such issues from his dark past.

Most of the previous is really irrelevant to the ultimate message of the film, which is that terrorists are still everywhere and intelligence agencies, though they keep failing, need more funding to protect us from Tomlinson, Aswat, Snowden, Bin Laden and Assange. More funding plus more surveillance equals more terror – the equation is quite a cash cow. The eternal “War on Terror,” as we can see in Fleming’s classic novels, was predicted and planned to replace the Soviet threat, as the Cold War allowed for the installation of the global surveillance grid, and now, the script is flipped on the populace – we’re all potential terrorists, and only skynet can save us! These classic scams never fail to work, of course, because the mindless public never catches on.


Real World Parallalels

From an esoteric perspective, all the hidden elements are contained in the opening sequence, which then unfold in the narrative. Bond’s journey Eastward is parallel to his descent into the abyss and “death” at the beginning, as his trip to Macau has him facing the “dragon” of the East, the demonic Mr. Silva. This is exemplified in his boat ride into the dragon’s mouth at Silva’s casino in Macau. In Casino Royale, Bond faced LeChiffre, a western “demon” in a casino, and now he must face a demon of the East. Silva, it turns out, is a master of false flags, having staged a chemical leak on a Chinese island, causing its inhabitants to flee enabling Silva to take up residence for his operations.

Just like the Underground bombing, Silva is a master of staging terror events – but remember – the film places all of this dastardly work on the shoulders of a former intelligence agent. There are never corrupt individuals within intelligence agencies (except that Quantum did allow for infiltration into Mi6), and anyone who dares to question the mainstream version of attacks must be a traitor to authentic “patriotism.” Given the immensity of the perpetual lies the Western establishment has foisted upon us since 9/11, does anyone really believe the propaganda message of this film? If London was really worried about terror, they wouldn’t house radical Islamists in “Londonistan.”

To bring this full circle, Bond’s death and resurrection is emblematic of the reboot of the series. We know from the supposed “leak” of the new SPECTRE script by unknown “hackers” from North Korea (try to not laugh), the third act is up for grabs. Will we see Blofeld? Will we see Kissy Suzuki? Maybe Lucy Liu (I kid). In any case, the leaks were obviously a staged PR event, as other mega tech companies have done in the past, and with the new 007 film it is not accidental that Skyfall was about hackers, and now SPECTRE is hacked (by SPECTRE!). The laughs come, however, when one realizes that the establishment itself is SPECTRE.

The pseudo hacking by North Koreans is tied to the release of The Interview to give a realistic feel to the threat of some unknown SPECTRE on the loose, when the entities that have all the motives and capabilities of SPECTRE are the establishment’s own legates. Casino Royale hinted at 9/11, Quantum revealed the green scam, and Skyfall whispered about 7/7: We can expect more Blofeldian subterfuge to come, so grab your popcorn and your Walther PPK, because the DPRK is coming! Indeed, the lyrics of Adele’s theme for the film describe the post-9/11 terror world, where the old has crumbled, and the new “security state” now dominates. Like chicken little, the false cry of perpetual terror calls forth – the sky is falling, the sky is falling! When we consider that Chicken Little was a World War II propaganda film by Disney, the reference is likely not accidental.

“This is the end, hold your breath and count to ten, I’ve drowned and dreamt this moment, let the sky fall, when it crumbles, we will stand tall and face it all at Skyfall.”

Skyfall is actually about the relationship between the intelligence operative and the organization he or she works for. This has become more of an issue, perhaps, after the murder of ‘body in the bag’, Gareth Williams. The intelligence services have a cancer. The film chooses to hang the blame on an old-fashioned and misguided M.

The film works on three levels i. an action movie thriller, i.e. the story; ii. the real meaning and iii. the hidden meaning. The real meaning is aimed at politicians, decision makers, the security apparatus, opinion formers, so long as they get it. The hidden meaning is aimed at intelligence operatives.

The story level has a lot of pro-MI6 propaganda. The need for brave, loyal foot soldiers who are willing to put their lives on the line for their country. The need to work in the shadows to beat the terrorists who can come from anywhere. The need to be able to spy on everyone’s social media. But, the odd, thing is that at the end M dies.

We know about the real and hidden meanings because of Skyfall lyrics and the opening credits. They are essentially about the dilemma of the intelligence operative. Many joined because of patriotism. They discover they have to do bad stuff. They also discover they might be sacrificed.

The film shows MI6 and London under threat from terrorism and from demands of public accountability. The terrorism we see is created by MI6, or rather a rogue MI6 officer. We also see that MI6 messed up by losing a list of undercover agents. Politicians want accountability and M’s future is in question. M has old-fashioned ideals: get the job done by whatever means, morality and emotional empathy are luxuries, sacrifice is necessary.

At the beginning of the film, Bond is told by M to ignore the dying MI6 agent and get on with the job. Bond is angry but does what he is told, only to be sacrificed himself by another MI6 agent. The mess up results in M being challenged by Mallory, the politician, who was a soldier (i.e patriotic). He demands more accountability.

The old/new issue is mirrored by Bond. The film asks whether the old-fashioned Bond is up to dealing with today’s threats. This is exemplified in Bond’s encounter with the new Q. Bond is not himself at the beginning of the film. He wears a stubble. His real self is restored when he is in China working with Moneypenny. In fact, she shaves off his beard and has sex with him – sex magic perhaps. We later see him dealing with IT as well as Q. He is now up to the job.

Then there is Raoul Silva, (his birth name is James) who is really a bit like Bond. Both are magical in their talents but are foot soldiers. Both are traumatized by M’s apparent betrayal and had to go through a transformation – one good, the other bad. The credits show Bond hunting the bad buys and he ends up shooting his own shadow. One of his shadows is actually the bad guy, Silva. We see a hole in Bond’s shadow and in Silva’s. Both have had a near-death trauma. (So, who exactly is the bad buy?)

So, Bond had to grapple with the same dilemma as Silva but Bond chooses country. M’s get the job done through sacrifice value creates Silva’s trauma and in turn leads him to becoming M’s opposite – an avenging devil. His anti-thesis to her thesis.

So M is ‘inadvertently’ creating terror and stopping accountability. We see accountability doesn’t work because Silva interrupts the hearings that has been going on and shoots up the room in which it’s taking place. Message: try full accountability and you’ll get messed up something rotten.

Bond’s solution is to take M out of MI6 and London. Thus, he stops the terror in London by whisking M to the middle of nowhere. This enables the battle between the thesis and anti-thesis to take place and at the end both M and Silva die.

But we find that Silva has done MI6 a favour. M, the cancer, is removed. That’s why she has to die. This enables Mallory to take over and change MI6’s values, but, presumably, only slightly. It becomes more accountable. This is the synthesis brought about by James Bond, the loyal, talented foot soldier and Mallory.

The film shows that the establishment is not happy with the intelligence services. The establishment cannot indefinitely cover up their obvious ‘mess ups’. As they did with Williams, or the Woolwich killings and a big list of a lot of other stuff. The film has MI6 saying: “We hear you. We’ll be different. Honest.”

The hidden message is aimed at intelligence operative. The Skyfall lyrics say: “You go where I go. You see what I see. You know, I’ll never be me without the security. Are your loving arms keeping me from harm? Put your hand in my hand and we’ll stand.’ They are saying: You need us, you may not be safe with us, you may take the fall for the bad we do, but you’ve got to take it.’

At the same time, the Royal Air Force (RAF) was having problems with their MRBM missile project, the Blue Streak, which was long overdue [EDITOR: Fleming's warning in 1953 Moonraker that captured Nazi rocket scientists were sabotaging Britain's missile program]. Even if this was successful, it faced the serious problem of basing. No fixed land-based missile system could be credibly installed in the British Isles; they were well within the range of Soviet air strikes. The limited land mass available meant it would be relatively easy for missile sites to be spotted no matter what security measures were taken. Suitable locations for construction also carried a social and political cost. Fixed land-based ballistic missile sites need many thousands of acres per squadron (typically ten missiles); and the squadrons need to be apportioned over many thousands of square miles so that no single attack could conceivably destroy them all in one strike.

This left the deterrent based on their own bomber force, the V bomber fleet, which the RAF had already long concluded would be unable to penetrate Soviet defenses by about 1960. The RAF was in the process of introducing their own stand-off missile, the 950 kilometres (590 mi) ranged Mach 3 Blue Steel. While capable, the missile flew at altitudes and speeds that left it vulnerable to improving SAMs, and it had a number of reliability and serviceability issues that made it less than ideal. A faster, longer-ranged version was being designed, Blue Steel II, but it would be some time before it could enter service.

The long-range Skybolt would eliminate the need for both the Blue Streak and the Blue Steel II. Blue Steel II was canceled in December 1959 and the British Cabinet decided in February 1960 to cancel Blue Streak as well. Prime Minister Macmillan met [EDITOR: Rockefeller Illuminati puppet] President Eisenhower in March 1960 and agreed to purchase 144 Skybolts for the RAF. By agreement, British funding for research and development was limited to that required to modify the V bombers to take the missile, but the British were allowed to fit their own warheads and the Americans were given nuclear submarine basing facilities in [EDITOR: Faslane] Scotland.[4] Following the agreement, the Blue Streak program was formally canceled in April 1960 and in May 1960 an agreement for an initial order of 100 Skybolts was concluded.[4]

Avro was made an associate contractor to manage the Skybolt program for the United Kingdom and four different schemes were submitted to find a platform for the missile.[4] A number of different aircraft were considered, including a variant of the Vickers VC10 airliner and two of the current V bombers, the Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor.[4] It was decided to use the Vulcan to initially carry two missiles each on hardpoints outboard of the main landing gear.[4]

Development and testing

During development, it was decided that the system could not reach the required accuracy at the desired range without an update to the guidance system. This led to the introduction of a star tracker platform that would be used to further enhance the existing inertial navigation system. The system was capable of tracking bright stars in direct sunlight, a challenging requirement. This change meant that the missile could only be carried in locations where the front of the missile could continually observe the sky. This had always been the case on the USAF's B-52 bombers, where they were carried under the wings, but presented a problem for some of the UK designs. In the end, Skybolt was limited to the Vulcan.

By 1961, several test articles were ready for testing from B-52's, with drop-tests starting in January. In January 1961 a Vulcan visited the Douglas plant at Santa Monica, California, to make sure the modifications to the aircraft were electrically compatible with the missile. In Britain, compatibility trials with mockups started on the Vulcan.[4] Powered tests started in April 1962, but the test series went badly, with the first five trials ending in failure of one sort or another. The first fully successful flight occurred on 19 December 1962.[5]

Cancellation

By this point, the value of the Skybolt system in the U.S. had been seriously eroded. The Polaris had recently gone into service, with overall capabilities similar to Skybolt, but with "loiter" times on the order of months instead of hours. Additionally, the [EDITOR: large land mass] U.S. Air Force itself was well into the process of developing the Minuteman [solid rocket fuel, intercontinental ballistic] missile, whose improved accuracy reduced the need for any bomber attacks. [EDITOR: Secretary of Defense] Robert McNamara was particularly opposed to the bomber force [EDITOR: he served as a bombing target officer under General LeMay in WW2, go figure?] and repeatedly stated he felt that the combination of SLBMs and ICBMs would render them useless. [EDITOR: so much for the TRIAD's sound redundancy] He pressed for the cancellation of Skybolt as an unnecessary program.

The British, on the other hand, had canceled all other projects to concentrate fully on Skybolt. When McNamara informed them that they were considering canceling the program in November 1962, a firestorm of protest broke out in the House of Commons. Jo Grimond noted "Does not this mark the absolute failure of the policy of the independent deterrent? Is it not the case that everybody else in the world knew this, except the Conservative Party in this country?"[6] [EDITOR: former naval officer] President Kennedy officially cancelled the program on 22 December 1962.[1]

As the political row grew into a major crisis, an emergency meeting between parties from the U.S. and U.K. was called, leading to the Nassau agreement. Over the next few days, a new plan was hammered out that saw the U.K. purchase the Polaris SLBM, but equipped with British warheads that lacked the dual-key system. The U.K. would thus retain its independent deterrent force, although its control passed from the RAF largely to the Royal Navy. The Polaris, a much better weapon system for the U.K., was a major "scoop" and has been referred to as "almost the bargain of the century".[7] The RAF kept a tactical nuclear capability with the [EDITOR: gravity bomb] WE.177 which armed V bombers and later the Panavia Tornado force. The "Skybolt Crisis" was a major event in the eventual downfall of the Macmillan government.[citation needed]
