During the war, Blunt attained the rank of major. In the final days of World War II in Europe, Blunt made a successful secret trip to Schloss Friedrichshof in Germany to retrieve sensitive letters between the Duke of Windsor and Adolf Hitler and other leading Nazis. George VI asked Blunt, who worked part-time at the Royal Library, to conduct the Royal Librarian, Owen Morshead, to Friedrichshof in March 1945 to liberate letters to the Empress Victoria, a daughter of Queen Victoria, and mother to Kaiser Wilhelm. Papers rescued by Morshead and Blunt were deposited in the Royal Archives.

The biography of Anthony Blunt, by Miranda Carter, gives a sort of
concordance of the various published versions of Blunt's famous visits
on behalf of George VI to Friedrichshof in August 1945 in search of
the papers of the Empress Frederick (or the Duke of Windsor, or ... )
and to Westphalia for Queen Charlotte's crown.


Stealing the Last of the Records at the end of World War Two

According to WWII S.O.E. Commander Chris Creighton, evidence went
missing and in the fog of war, files were adjusted by those with a hidden
motive. Creighton further describes how records were compromised in
order to create a legend that served a darker purpose.

In the final days of World War II in Europe, Anthony Blunt made
a successful secret trip to Schloss Friedrichshof in Germany to retrieve
sensitive letters between the Duke of Windsor and Adolf Hitler and other
leading Nazis.

King George VI (R. 1936–52) had a great intereest in these files as the
information in them related to his elder brother, the uncrowned Edward VIII
(R. 20 January–10 Decembeer 1936) who abdicated and was now the Duke
of Windsor. It also related to his great-grandmother Queen Victoria
(R. 1837–1901) and his great-aunt, Princess Vicky who briefly became the
Empress of Germany (R. 9 March–15 June 1888).

King George VI asked Anthony Blunt to conduct Owen Morshead to
Friedrichshof Castle to liberate letters in the possession of Empress Victoria
(21 November 1840–5 August 1901), the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria,
and the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm (R. 15 June 1888–9 November 1918).

Friedrichshof Castle was now in the possession of Princess Margaret,
Landgravine of Hesse, with the entire correspondence of her mother
Princess Vicky to her mother, Queen Victoria.

Major Anthony Blunt worked part-time at the Royal Library and
Owen Morshead was the Royal Librarian, although Morshead was also Sir
Owen Morshead (1893–1977) who, like Blunt, enterred Cambridge in 1913.

During WWI Morshead was awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order),
MC (Military Cross) and Croix de Guerre (Cross of War) for acts of heroism
involving combat with enemy forces, then returned to Cambridge College
leaving as a Fellow. Morshead then became Librarian and Assistant Keeper
of the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle (1926–5 and was a real friend to
King George V annd Queen Mary (R. 1910–36) and so assisted in covering
for GGeorge V’s illegitimacy. During WWII, Morshead commanded the 9th
battalion, Berkshire Home Guard, and was awarded the GCVO (Knight of
the Grand Cross) for covering up the Royal Illegitimacy, retained in the
Royal Archives, then made Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Berkshire (1946–.

Privately, his domestic life with Scots-born former Irish Guards bandsman John Gaskin, described as so beautiful he turned men's heads as well as womens', continued. Gaskin had moved into Blunt's flat at the Courtauld Institute in the Fifties.

The Queen, fully briefed about Blunt's confession, played her part perfectly and Sir Anthony Blunt continued to be a familiar and welcome figure in the royal palaces, as official adviser on her art collection, just as he had been to her father.

Nor did his confession affect his presence at the highest tables. In 1966, two years after that clipped admission, Lord Annan, provost of King's College, Cambridge, held a small dinner party at his home.

Round the table were Labour's Home Secretary Roy (later Lord) Jenkins, father-figure of the permissive society, Ann Fleming, widow of James Bond author Ian, and Victor (Lord) Rothschild and his wife Tess.

With the Provost's permission, the Rothschilds had also brought their friend and house-guest - Blunt. Incredibly, while it might have made no difference to his being there, the Home Secretary had been left in complete ignorance by MI5 that the surveyor of the Queen's pictures had spent years as a Soviet spy.

Governments - Labour and Conservative - came and went. Blunt's reputation continued to grow.

Then, one November afternoon in 1979, when Margaret Thatcher had been in power a few months, she was asked in the House of Commons if rumours that Sir Anthony Blunt was a Soviet agent were true. Yes, she said.

For some in MI5 who believed Anthony Frederick Blunt should have been rotting in jail for his high treason, it was a moment of triumph.

For 15 years, they had been forced to bottle up their anger at what they saw as 'special treatment' for this well-connected establishment figure whose lofty life continued uninterrupted while more lowly Russian spies like John Vassell, a clerk at the British embassy in Moscow, were sent to prison for 18 years.

Some even dared wonder whether the cover-up could have been influenced by his being related to the Queen Mother and, through her, the Queen herself.

Mrs Thatcher has never explained why she ended Blunt's cosy arrangement with MI5. But Sir Bernard Ingham, her private secretary while she was at No 10, has little doubt.

'I believe she did it because she didn't see why the system should cover things up,' he says.

'This was early in her Prime Ministership. I think she wanted to tell the civil service that the politicians decide policy, not the system. She wanted them to know who was boss.'

Charles Lynton is Tony Blair’s middle names, and it was lord levy who funded and greased Tony Blair through the hoop into the prime minister’s office for one reason, the Iraq war.

SIR Anthony Blunt, the surveyor of the Queen's pictures unmasked in 1979 as a Soviet spy, may have been an illegitimate son of George V, according to a controversial new book on the royal family.

War of the Windsors - A Century of Unconstitutional Monarchy, published today by Mainstream in Edinburgh, also claims that Lord Mountbatten was approached to be the figurehead leader of a coup d'etat to depose the Wilson government in 1968 amid fears that the country was in ''economic and moral decline''.


The authors, Stephen Prior, a former British intelligence officer, Clive Prince, Lynne Picknett, and Robert Brydon, also allege that the royal family were involved in machinations to seek an accommodation with Hitler during the war and thereby ''guilty of treason of the highest order''.

War of the Windsors is Picknett and Prince's fifth major investigative work after Double Standards, the Rudolf Hess Cover-up, the Turin Shroud: In Whose Image, The Templar Revelations, and The Stargate Conspiracy.

It follows hard on the heels of the acquittal of Paul Burrell, the former royal butler, after a three-week trial at the Old Bailey in London.

Mr Prior said: ''The case of Paul Burrell may well prove to be the issue that finally leads to a radical reappraisal and overhaul of Britain's outmoded constitutional monarchy.

''The Burrell revelations, however, are merely the tip of an iceberg of royal sleaze, duplicity, and outright constitutional manipulation and malpractice - as War of the Windsors shows.''

According to Phoenix, a source of the authors who knew Blunt and worked as an officer for M15, Blunt confessed to being a Soviet spy in 1964 after being under suspicion for at least a decade.

Mysteriously, however, no action had been taken against him. Blunt was not publicly unmasked until 1979, despite his confession 15 years previously. He was allowed to remain as surveyor of the Queen's pictures until his retirement in 1972.

Mr Prior said: ''Why was his treason not punished? Despite the 'blackmail' he no doubt possessed on the royal family through his knowledge of secret correspondence he uncovered in post-war Germany relating to royal peace overtures, there is the strong possibility he may have been of royal blood himself.''


War of the Windsors details how Blunt, ostensibly the son of a humble vicar, may actually have been a b****** son of George V.

Incredible as it sounds, the available evidence is intriguing. George V is known to have enjoyed the favours of mistresses. It is conceivable that one of these mistresses may have been Blunt's mother

The book features photographs of Blunt, the Duke of Kent, and the Duke of Windsor - all born in the same generation. Although not conclusive of a blood relationship, the resemblances are remarkable.

Blunt was born in September 1907, the youngest of three sons. His father was Reverend Stanley Blunt, vicar of the village of Ham, and his mother Hilda Masters. They married in 1900 and in 1906, a year before Anthony was born. Blunt died in 1983.

Hilda Masters knew Queen Mary before she became Queen - they used to go blackberry-picking together - and the two women remained friends for the rest of their lives. The book says, of George V, husband of Mary: ''Even this allegedly most uxorious of royal husbands was known to have mistresses - at the seaside resort of Bognor, for example.

''Like many Victorian ladies, Mary may have welcomed the reprieve from the horror of sexual intimacy, even if it meant her great friend took her place in her husband's bed.''


The book alleges the centrepiece of the Mountbatten plot lay in persuading the Queen to dismiss the government, and then, with the backing of the armed forces set up a government of national unity.

The coup attempt came to nothing, but it now appears that there was a faction within MI5 that supported the idea because it believed Harold Wilson, the prime minister, was a Soviet agent.

It emerged in 1987 that the Cunard shipping line had been approached by senior figures in the army and security services in preparation for the liner QE2 to be requisitioned as a detention centre for the cabinet.

Last night, a spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: ''We are not prepared to give any comment which would dignify the book.''
