A Japanese daily reported Tuesday that Japan will begin pulling out its Self Defense Forces in Iraq next month.

The Mainichi Shimbun said that the Japanese government had decided to withdraw its ground forces from Iraq's southern city of Samawa by May, timed with a scheduled withdrawal of British and Australian forces from the same region.

Tokyo is finalizing the details of the move with Washington and London.

The Japanese ground forces were dispatched to the war-torn state two years ago to support reconstruction work for roads and water facilities.

The Mainichi added that Tokyo would continue airborne transport support missions in Iraq.
