Forces lose string of historic bases as MoD sells off another 56 sites

Fort George, home to 3rd Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland, will be disposed of by 2032
Ben Farmer, defence correspondent
7 NOVEMBER 2016 • 7:37PM
The Armed Forces are to give up a string of historic bases and barracks in the biggest shake-up of the military estate in decades, after the Ministry of Defence announced it was disposing of 56 sites.
Sites including Woolwich barracks in London, Fort George in the Highlands and several Royal Marines bases will be sold off or the leases given up as the MoD tries to save billions following last year’s defence review.
Sir Michael Fallon, the Defence Secretary, said the estate was too big and costly to run and the closures, which come on top of 35 others announced earlier in the year, paved the way for a more modern military.
But one senior Royal Marines officer accused the Government of “ignoring the traditions that the military runs on” by abandoning historic buildings.
The Royal Marines are losing Stonehouse barracks and the Citadel in Plymouth, as well as Norton Manor Camp near Taunton and Chivenor in Devon.
The officer said there was concern that “little thought” had been given to the relocation of units and families in race to sell off land to balance the books.
He said: “There will be a lot of people asking if the government really want an Armed Forces, we have seen the Army cut to 80,000, the Navy's surface fleet reduced and now the infrastructure is to go.
"Since the end of the campaign in Afghanistan a lot of people have taken the decision that the military no longer offers them or their families a secure life , this will simply add to that perception.
"Once you dismantle tradition you can never replace it".
The Armed Forces are 30 per cent smaller than at the turn of the century, but the estate has only reduced by 9 per cent.
Last year's Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) outlined the MoD's aim to reduce the size of its estate by 30 per cent before 2040.
Most of the sites will be disposed of over the next 15 years and Mr Fallon said the MoD would hit its target of providing land for 55,000 new houses this Parliament. The MoD estimates it will save £3bn in running costs by 2040, but the savings over the next decade will only be £140 million.
Mr Fallon said units would be consolidated into existing bases, with parts of the UK becoming specialised hubs for different types of forces, he said.
He said the Army would have "specialised infantry" at Aldershot, mechanised wheel capability in Catterick, air assault forces in Colchester, armoured vehicle units around Salisbury Plain, medical services in the West Midlands and hubs of light infantry battalions in London, Edinburgh, Lisburn, St Athan, Blackpool and Cottesmore. _________________ --
