But the principle of democracy (government of the people by the people for the people) has not been discredited, merely imperfectly realised. And the principles of socialism (from each according to ability, to each according to need etc) has never been perfectly realised either. Indeed as Milovan Djilas wrote and George Orwell satirised in Animal Farm, socialism as practised gave rise to domination by a new ruling class.
The struggle for just forms of governance continues worldwide.

–noun, plural -cies.
1.
government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
It rapidly goes down hill with the “or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.” Rather that the people governing with a few public servants and not public masters, making up policies to suit the rich and/or thier? Opinions. And/or selected so called elected agents.
“I nowhere see the federal power,-- for all men in America,-- are self governing.”
Alexis de Tocqueville (tipping his hat on the scam of democracy and the text within) in De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville
And then before we get to the people governing, on what principals should they be based upon. The different opinions of hundreds or thousands, millions, billions of people? All pulling in different directions?
Since you suggest that democracy has been “merely imperfectly realised” what is it that you? Suggest we should all conform to, and I’m sure that on many things, many will agree upon them; but there is always other issues that if we look carefully, at our own? Opinions and are honest to ourselves, do cause harm to people.

Many years ago 150/200 years ago in America people had “Allodial title” It describes a situation where real property (land, buildings and fixtures) is owned free and clear of any dues payable to a superior landlord or worldly king etc.
This is why in America (A mans home was his castle) with the same prerogative rights as the king, rather than just subjects to a worldly king, superior, landlord etc and how well they did the bidding of a plutocracy (where no good deed goes unpunished and no bad deed goes unrewarded)
Very close to Biblical Law where the Constitution got its parts from. And every man above the age of 18, had studied the Law within and were more self governing.
