The former head of the Environmental Protection Agency, who knowingly lied and signed off on falsified scientific research on the toxicity of the air in the aftermath of 9/11, has refused a request by Rep. Jerrold Nadler that she testify before a congressional hearing on the federal government's response to be tabled later this month.

The New York Sun today reported:

Christine Todd Whitman, the EPA administrator at the time, has declined an invitation to appear before a House subcommittee that Mr. Nadler chairs, an aide to the congressman said yesterday. Mr. Nadler, whose district includes ground zero, is expected to ask Ms. Whitman again before considering whether to seek to compel her testimony with a subpoena, the aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.
Yesterday we reported on the fact that Hillary Clinton had announced, along with New York Congressman Jerry Nadler, D-NY, that she will chair the probe looking into the federal government's response and environmental clean-up efforts in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Clinton/ Nadler press release stated that one intention of the probe was to take a close look at the EPA's inadequate program to test and clean residential areas in Manhattan.

In a recent decision, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York found that former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman's falsely reassuring and misleading statements of safety after the September 11, 2001 attacks were "without question conscience-shocking." The court also found the facts "support an allegation of a violation of the substantive due process right to be free from official government policies that increase the risk of bodily harm" by Whitman's misstatements regarding the air quality of the affected area. An EPA Inspector General review reached similar conclusions.

We have postulated that the left arm of the Washington power elite will be unlikely to fully expose the reality of the monumental criminal culpability of the Bush Administration on this particular issue, but will instead seek to once again close off the issue. Indeed it seems that Whitman is in the frame to take the fall and cover the behinds of the ever increasingly unaccountable Neocon crime syndicate in the White House.

Cancer Kills 3 9/11 firefighters on same day

Three retired New York City firefighters who worked at Ground Zero have died on the same day from cancers that many believe can be attributed to the 9/11 attacks.

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the deaths are "a painful reminder that 13 years later we continue to pay a terrible price for the department's heroic efforts".

Lieutenant Howard Bischoff, Robert Leaver and Daniel Heglund died on Monday.

One had leukaemia, one had oesophageal cancer and a third had colon cancer.

They were among the hundreds of firefighters who rushed to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, attending to survivors as they battled flames, smoke and dust.

The Fire Department of New York lost 343 firefighters on 9/11. In total, nearly 3,000 people died in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania.

Not long after the attacks, first responders began exhibiting health problems, with 99% of exposed firefighters reporting at least one new respiratory illness.

Hundreds have been diagnosed with cancer in the wake of the attacks, but doctors and researchers are still uncertain whether there is any direct link to 9/11.

Union leaders say more than 800 firefighters have been diagnosed with 9/11-related illnesses.

Steve Cassidy, the president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, said that firefighters "have been getting sick and dying in record numbers as a result of cancers and other diseases caused by breathing the toxic air at the World Trade Center site."

In 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, that allowed Congress to set aside $2.78bn to compensate first responders with illnesses that might be related to the terror attacks.

Union leaders are calling for an extension to the bill.

'Environmental activist Erin Brockovich, responsible for the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history, accused the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of lying about how much toxic wastewater spilled into the Animas river from a Colorado abandoned mine.

She made the statements on Tuesday during a visit to the Navajo Nation—the country’s largest American Indian reservation—while she met with Navajo leaders and farmers and spoke to a group of high school students.

“They did not tell the truth about the amount. There were millions and millions of gallons,” Brockovich said, expressing shock at the agency’s actions leading up to the spill and its response afterward.

A mining and safety team working on behalf of the EPA said that a million gallons of mine waste was spilled from the abandoned Gold King Mine in San Juan County, Colorado in early August. However, a few days later, the EPA revised their estimate, saying it was likely three times as high as originally estimated. Downstream communities declared states of emergency and the Navajo Nation vowed to take action against the EPA.

“Uncertainty lingers over the long-term dangers to public health and the environment from the spill, which contaminated rivers in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah,” reports the AP. “EPA says the threat has eased, allowing treatment plants to start drawing water from the rivers again and ending warnings against recreational activities. But Navajo leadership is skeptical.”

Leaders of the tribe went to the Gold King Mine to investigate just days after the spill. They believe even the 3 million gallon estimate is too low. The tribe is doing its own water and sediment testing. In the meantime, some irrigation systems have remained off, leaving thousands of acres of crops without water for weeks.

“It’s a terrible disaster, and unfortunately it’s a situation we see playing itself out not only on the Navajo Nation, but across the United States of America,” Brockovich said, referring to pollution and lax enforcement.

“You are the future and you will be the answers,” she told a gathering of high school students. A series of Congressional hearings investigating the spill began yesterday. Republicans in the House and Senate said that EPA officials “have withheld documents that could explain what went wrong.”....'
