I believe that the editor of yesterday's edition (14/8/06) of the Daily Express, metaphorically, shot himself in the foot. The leader column takes the government to task over the latest security measures; an extra £30m per year is now being spent on extra surveilliance measures, it tells us, and adds that "such a response is predicated on the belief that all travellers represent an equal threat and that they must all be subject to the same security checks". It continues: "Common sense tells us that this is wrong. As Lord Stevens, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said yesterday: "I'm a white, 62 year old, 6ft 4in, suit wearing, ex-cop - I fly often, but do I really fit the profile of a suicide bomber? Does the young mum with three tots, the gay couple, the rugby team, the middle-aged businessman?" No, my Lord, I suspect that you have no terrorist intentions. Neither does the young mum etc. Presumably, because they are white.
But then we get a taste of what the article is really all about.
"In each case the answer is a resounding "no". WE ALL KNOW THAT SUICIDE BOMBERS ARE YOUNG MALE MUSLIMS (my caps). To say as much is not racist and to pretend otherwise is disingenuous. If our airports are to return to business as usual we must abandon this politically correct fiction that a suicide bomber could be just anyone. This won't please the Muslim community but then what does?"
What probably would be a start in repairing cultural fences between the two races would be for the police to cease waking young Muslim men from their beds in the early hours without due cause, and yes, the preference for and the trust in, the behaviour of one race over another is certainly racist. There was in fact a young mum taken into custody in the recent wave of arrests. She too, had a "tot" who is also experiencing at a very early age, life behind bars. Also among those rounded up was a medical student. Neither of these unfortunate individuals should appear to "fit the profile of a suicide bomber" either, but they do so because both are Muslims.
The point that has been missed by the Daily Express is that the reason for the catch-all regime that has been imposed on the British public is to designed to instil a widespread fear and suspicion, limiting precious individual freeedoms even further, and if the recent round of arrests go the way of others in recent months, and suspects are released after questioning, without charge, people will come to believe that the state is crying wolf once too often. |

As Bush said the other day, "Islamofascists"...
Even my own dad said that all terrorists are Muslims!
As you said, the whole point is to limit our freedoms and install fear, aswell as a Orwellian type lifestyle aka Police State.
The Muslims are being used as the scapegoat to advance this agenda of our governments/leaders. Sure, they do commit terrorist type acts, like suicide bombing, which must be condemed of course, but as Arundhati Roy said, "can we ignore the journey they took to reach this destination?"
The corporate media consistently fails to mention the reason WHY these people are blowing themselves up, and no suprises its to do with Israel, the worlds no.1 terrorist state.
The sad thing is that 7/7 + 9/11 were inside operations, yet we are going to be seeing real terrorism in our own countries soon, when young teenage Muslims here can not control their anger against the state.
Having said all this, information is getting around, and more and more people are awake to the real agenda of our governments, and specifically Israel's war crimes in the Middle East recently.
I think nearly everyone recognises the recent terrorist plot to be nothing more than a diversion from the Middle East.
