Al Qaida chief urges retaliation over Lebanon

One of al Qaida's top members has said that the terrorist group could not remain "silent and cringe'' as Muslims were killed in Lebanon.

Ayman al Zawahiri, thought to be Osama bin Laden's number two, said any country that has supported Israel will "pay the price''.

In the first message from the terror group since violence erupted in Lebanon, he called for Muslims to back jihad in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Palestine.

He threatened that a group that produced the 19 terrorists who "shook'' the United States is able to produce "double'' that number.

Zawahiri said: "The missiles and rockets that tear the Muslim bodies in Gaza and Lebanon are not completely from Israel but it comes from and gets financed from all countries of the crusaders' league


"Therefore, whoever has participated in this crime must pay the price.

"We cannot remain silent and cringe while watching these missiles pouring fire on our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon.''

Zawahiri delivered his video message in front of a picture of the World Trade Centre attack on September 11, 2001.

The short video was produced by as-Sahab, a media production company created by al Qaida, and released on an extremist website.

Zawahiri said every former Muslim state from "Spain to Iraq'' must be liberated by force.
