TAX REBEL, 73, JAILED
A 73-year-old pensioner has been jailed for a week for refusing to pay her council tax.
Exeter magistrates said Sylvia Hardy was "not a martyr".
Hardy had said she could no longer afford to pay her tax bill and is pushing the government to change the system.
She owed £53.71 from last year plus £10 costs.
In June, a court gave her two months to pay up - or spend a week behind bars.
Mrs Hardy refused to pay the arrears in protest at above-inflation increases in council tax.
She said the elderly now pay far too much in relation to their incomes.
"The hardest thing for me in prison will be the food," Mrs Hardy said.
"I have a number of food allergies, so I will not be eating much for a week."
But she added: "If what we endure is going to help achieve our aim we will all think it is worth it."
"Very often people have had to take drastic action to get bad laws changed."
i can get a number of DVDs down there if need be if anyone can get a contact?
Peace

She's not someone who would have occurred to me as a natural ally, but perhaps you're right, Kenny. Maybe we should be targeting anyone who mistrusts authority.
Good luck with pursuing her.

|

Yes, when I read about this woman I was thinking that's another person who has managed to get her message out and printed in the papers, on tv etc. Some people seem to manage this better than others. I think it is often as a result of taking some kind of extreme action, thus for an elderly lady to be prepared to go to prison for what she believes in gets the attention of the press, it could be she believed in anything (do you think?) but she gets the coverage because of the unusualness of her action, then inevitably the message gets out at the same time. I am certainly not advocating that we do anything like this and some of the following I am not in favour of but I'm just considering what sticks in my mind:
Lindis Percy (whom I know and know where she is at this very moment and wonder what she will be getting up to!) - climbs Buckingham Palace Gates and gets her message "Go home George Bush, you are not welcome here!" (not exact words!)
The foxhunting people invade the House of Commons and they are all over the front pages of the National papers the next day - if one was not aware of their message already one is now - "Don't bann fox hunting!"
The "Fathers for Justice" group dress up as Spiderman and hang from the big hand of Big Ben (or was that Greenpeace?!) and once again it's all over the front pages - this time it was an issue I had given little consideration - but knowing at least one father who gets little change to see his children since his wife asked for a divorce - I see they have a point.
Just makes me wonder if we can use something maybe less radical and not breaking the law - I'm being silly here but I'm just trying to think of something which would make people stop in their tracks for a moment and see our message - right we either move the stars around in the Heavens to spell out "9/11, Inside Job" just for one night! Or we get one of those planes that can write a message with coloured smoke or whatever it is saying "9/11, Inside Job!" Just for one day!
What do you think and can anyone come up with any more "practical" ideas? The "Spot the missing plane and claim a prize" thingy that was held up on the Sunday at our meeting (can someone remind me what exactly it was?) strikes me as having that "marketing" element to it - was it created by the Brilliat Bristol group?! _________________ Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Outside supermarkets, busy stations, newspapers, media at busy times.
I'm fairly certain the cps wouldn't want anything 911 related in court.
It's a defense in law to break a lesser law to bring attention to the breaking of a larger law.
eg. genocide under international criminal court law and
911 where UK people were murdered by the US gov. |
