A Study of the Evacuation of the World Trade Centre - 11 September 2001

The University of Greenwich, in collaboration with the University of Ulster and University of Liverpool will, with support from an EPSRC research grant, investigate the behaviours and experiences of the survivors of the World Trade Centre evacuation on 11 September 2001.

Three motivated researchers are required to join the existing team to interview the survivors of the World Trade Centre tragedy to elicit their experiences and archive these in a database for use in informing future design of high rise buildings. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in a high profile research project and requires researchers of the highest calibre.

Three researchers, Human Behaviour (one based at each of the three partner universities) are required to collect and collate the experiences of evacuees.

All posts are fixed term for two years. The three researchers will be required to work in New York, USA for extended periods. The positions are expected to commence on 1 November 2005.

Interviews for all three posts will be held at the University of Greenwich.

I'm totally gob-smacked that as academic institutions, they don't seem to have investigated the fact that the WTC could, just could, have collapsed because of previously placed explosives. I wonder how far into their 'research' they will get before it dawns on them.

This professor together with his network of academic colleagues (details of which I have on request) appear to be the principle civil engineering/fire engineering researchers in the UK looking at WTC collapses. I suggest those wishing to challenge the science of the tower collapses start by engaging with this man and his colleagues. If I ever find the time that is my intention

EPSRC Research Studentship in Structural Fire Engineering

This EPSRC-funded studentship is available from 1 October 2005 for 3 years. The project, which is to be coordinated with complementary studies at the University of Manchester, is concerned with the resistance to disproportionate collapse of joints in steel-framed structures in fire. This is a subject which was brought to public attention with the fire-induced collapse of several large buildings of the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001. One post-doctoral Research Associate will be employed at each of the two universities, together with the project research student at Sheffield. The programme of research at Sheffield will include high-temperature testing of joint and component assemblies up to failure at high temperatures, together with detailed finite element studies which will eventually lead through to simplified models which can be implemented in global structural analysis software. The student is expected to work closely with the Sheffield RA and to liaise regularly with colleagues at Manchester, where the initial experimental work will concentrate on the temperature distributions caused in typical beam-column connection conditions. In the late stages of the project sub-structure tests will be carried out at Manchester, with associated modelling, and extending parametric studies, at Sheffield.
Applicants should have a good first degree, preferably in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related discipline, be self-motivating and have a healthy spirit of scientific enquiry. They should also be capable of contributing to a major experimental programme, and be capable of learning any necessary analytical techniques, such as those of numerical analysis. Although a UK residence qualification would be the normal assumption, it may be possible to offer part or full funding to suitable overseas applicants.
