I guessing that a key to understanding these latest developements is to examine how it is being reported in the US. If its not, then they are afraid of the appearance of a weakened position. If it is being reported on and asserted positively, you may well be right; The appearance of rationality. Most likely to then be followed by some horrible (manufactured) back-stabbing event by the Iranians, thereby justifying the US's original position.
