Belgium: Arrested nazi terrorists included soldiers

A two-year operation by the Belgian police culminated in a massive raid on 20 private houses and the arrest of 15 men and two women. Two small trucks full of modern and heavy arms, bullet-proof jackets, large amounts of ammunition, detonators for landmines and a small bomb big enough to blow up a car were seized in the raids on 7 September.

Police also swooped on military barracks in Leopoldsburg, Kleine Brogel, Peer, Brussels and Zedelgem.

The suspects, nine of them soldiers, are members of Blood, Soil, Honour and Loyalty (BBET), a split-off from the nazi Blood and Honour Flanders organisation. They were allegedly planning terrorist attacks in Belgium in a bid to destabilise society.

A letter claiming responsibility for the planned bombings had already been drafted, according to sources at the Belgian Justice Department.

The alleged leader of the would-be terrorist gang is Thomas Boutens, 25, a soldier whose ex-girlfriend Tamara van Aelst, 25, runs the notorious BBET hangout the Viking Bar, in Leopoldsburg, a village that houses a military garrison. Marc Horemans from Antwerp has been described as the BBET's chief ideological wirepuller.

Boutens's activities apparently included organising military training, survival weekends and shooting practice, and setting up an arms trafficking business. One of the reasons for the sudden police intervention was that the nazis' arms dealing was getting out of hand and the authorities wanted to stop the weapons reaching the black market. According to the Justice Department, the group was well trained, well organised and highly motivated to carry out attacks.

The BBET's ideology is a rabid mix of virulent racism, antisemitism and Holocaust denial. It preaches so-called revolutionary national socialism and worship of Hitler's Third Reich.

The organisation was established because a group was dissatisfied with the activities of Blood and Honour Flanders, which is notorious for organising nazi concerts that entertain boneheads from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands almost every month without any intervention from the authorities.

Despite the relative success of Blood and Honour Flanders, the BBET wants more than beer drinking and random punch-ups. It sees itself as the vanguard of the white revolution and planned to murder politicians of both the right and the left. Other documents found in the group's possession targeted migrants, Jews and a number of other individuals.

The BBET's website is similar to other nazi websites and contains all the usual brain-rotting propaganda: denial of the authenticity of the diary of Anne Frank, admiration of Hitler, interviews with geriatric Hitler fans such as Florentine Rost van Tonningen, the obligatory links to the Ku Klux Klan and calls for the destruction of the "Jewish enemy".

BBET has cultivated contacts with nazi hooligans in Flanders and with the Dutch nazi groups, the National Alliance (NA), Dutch People's Union (NVU) and Blood and Honour (see Searchlight August 2006).

In 2005 the NA and BBET organised joint lectures headed "Race and reality – towards the extinction of the white race?" and "Activism and Zionism". Members of the NA visited at least two demonstrations in Flanders that were partly organised by the BBET. To seal the link, the internet server of Jan Teijn, the NA chairman, hosted the BBET's mail address for a period.

Members of the NVU also visit meetings organised by the BBET in Flanders and BBET members have participated in NVU demonstrations. On 1 July the NVU organised a demonstration against "Zionism" and in support of Iran. Although the BBET was not able to attend, it did send greetings.

The day after the main raids, the police searched two houses around Mechelen and Antwerp where they arrested two arms dealers and confiscated 50 and 60 weapons respectively. The military command has suspended 12 soldiers who are under investigation but seven suspects have been released.

Nazi gig scrapped

A useful by-product of the raids was that a gig planned for 9 September by Blood and Honour Flanders had to be scrapped. The concert, to be staged at a secret venue, was billed as an "Ian Stuart Memorial" event and was to have featured six nazi rock bands from the UK, Germany, Sweden and Russia: Warlord, PWA, Ultima Ratio, English Rose, Kommando Skin and Fyrdung.

Blood and Honour Flanders held nazi rock festivals in March and August successfully using the same formula of finding low profile venues, known only by locals, in small towns in the Antwerp and Brussels regions.

The August gig in Boortmeerbeek – supposedly "for imprisoned nation-alists" – was allowed to go ahead even though the federal Belgian police found out well in advance where the "secret" Hitlerfest would take place. Boortmeerbeek's mayor also refused to take any action against the illegal activities and instructed the police to look after public order outside the venue.
