MI5's Director-General Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller is supposedly publicity shy, so much so that she has made three public speeches since her failure to predict or prevent July 7. If this is what she's like I when she's shy, heaven help us if she gets over her diffidence or she'll be compering Strictly Come Dancing.
She said she was not deliberately stirring up fear to exaggerate her service's importance (translation: 'That is exactly what I am doing') and then announced that "huge snakes, millions of miles long, were roaming the country gobbling up pensioners.
No, I made that bit up. She actually said she knew of 30 suicide plots and 200 active terrorist groups. These figures sound rather like the ones that Senator Joe McCarthy used to dream up when he was warning against a communist takeover of America.
Actually there really were high-placed communists in the USA and there will be more terrorist outrages here, but Senator McCarthy didn't know who the Reds were and Dame Eliza is likewise whistling in the dark.
We must all be a little less credulous about this sort of thing. Last week a gullible judge gave a hysterical 40-year jail sentence to a nasty but unhinged fantasist, Dhiren Barot, who hadn't actually done anything except make a lot of absurd notes. .
It's suggested he was planning a 'dirty bomb'. This misleading phrase is always a sign of a scare story. No such bomb has ever been detonated, even in a laboratory. If it were, the radiation risk would be tiny and the main danger would be from the resulting ignorant panic, as people fled from a hugely exaggerated peril.
Yes, there's a terrorist risk, but Eliza can't protect us from it, and she does the. terrorists' work - terrifying us into giving in to them - when she behaves like this.
