That was very annoying an unrealistic.
The lunatic had a press button detonator, if you shoot him numerous times he wont be able to press the button.
Its only dangerous if its a release switch detonator.

Or the explosive is also wired to a timer. You shoot him and there is no explosion. You wait, and wait, then approach, then it goes off.
