Former British spymaster's prophetic thriller rings true
By Larry Bleiberg
The Dallas Morning News
A pair of terrorists infiltrates England and carefully plans a horrific attack using a homemade bomb stashed in a backpack.
No, it's not yesterday's headlines. It's a thriller released last year by the former head of England's secret service agency, MI5.
Stella Rimington may be best known as the inspiration for Judi Dench's M in the James Bond series. But now the former spy is writing spy thrillers.
Although the plot wobbles at first, we're quickly drawn into a cat-and-mouse chase as a female agent (a young Mrs. Rimington?) methodically detects, identifies and tracks a pair she's certain are a national threat.
Most intriguing is how her detective work draws in England's security branches.
It all feels real. And we can only assume it is.
Reader Jennifer McMahon delivers a strong performance with a range of voices that heightens the drama.

The developing plot draws the reader in; set against a background of Islamist extremism, At Risk is undeniably pacey
AMAZON.Com Synopsis
'Our concern - and we've communicated this over the weekend to all stations - is that the opposition may be about to deploy an 'invisible'. An invisible is CIA speak for the ultimate intelligence nightmare: the terrorist who, because he or she is an ethnic native of the target country, can cross its borders unchecked, move around that country unquestioned and infiltrate its institutions with ease. An invisible on mainland Britain was the worst possible news. .
For Liz Carlyle, an MI5 Intelligence officer, this report from MI6 marks the start of an operation which will test her to the limit and put her own life in jeopardy. As she sifts the incoming evidence and gets reports from her agents she realizes there is an immanent terrorist threat. But who or what is the target? And who and where is the invisible? |
