Muckraker Report - Vote for Public Enemy No 1

Public Enemy Number One is a new, interactive feature of the Muckraker Report where you get to nominate your candidate for the week's Public Enemy Number One! New "Enemies" will be posted each Sunday.

On January 18, 2007 this week’s Public Enemy Number One, Alberto Gonzales, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. In regard to the writs of habeas corpus, a judicial mandate to a prison official ordering that an inmate be brought to the court so it can be determined whether or not that person is imprisoned lawfully and whether or not he should be released from custody, or a habeas corpus petition; a petition filed with a court by a person who objects to his or another's detention or imprisonment, Gonzales said:

…the Constitution doesn’t say [that] every individual in the United States or every citizen is hereby granted or assured the right of habeas [corpus], it doesn’t say that…it simply says [that] the right of habeas corpus shall not, shall not be suspended…

Ignoring over two centuries of legal precedent regarding habeas corpus, Alberto Gonzales, the Attorney General of the United States, is clearly a domestic enemy of the U.S. Constitution and a grave threat to the citizenry of the United States of America. Given the means and opportunity, the irate public should deal with Gonzales justly.
