It seems likely the sprinkler system was disabled in advance. However, I think it was the thermite bombs on the basement columns that caused the collapse. We know beyond a shadow of any doubt that this occurred because firemen found dozens of small pools of moulten steel at the basement level in all 3 buildings. The only way moulten steel puddles could've been produced is if thermite bombs were strapped to the side of the columns in the basement and were set off. So, despite all efforts the planes did not cause the collapse. They had to go to plan b. Seismograph data of the collapse even shows these things going off just before the collapse of each building.
