Key 9/11 suspects face judicial panels at Guantanamo

WASHINGTON, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Three key suspects related to 9/11 terror attacks have faced judicial panels that will determine whether they will be held indefinitely, the Pentagon said Monday.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected 9/11 mastermind; Ramzi bin al-Shibh, another key 9/11 planner; and Abu Faraz al-Libby, a top al Qaida planner, separately appeared before three-judge panels over the weekend, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told media.

The judicial panels, known as the combatant status review boards, determine whether detainees held at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba, shall be classified as "enemy combatants", who can be held indefinitely and are eligible for military trials.

The three suspects are part of a group of 14 detainees who were once held in secret CIA prisons before their transfers to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in September 2006.

Whitman said another high-value detainee will go through a hearing Monday, but did not reveal the name.

It could be weeks before the outcomes are known because the findings must be sent to higher authorities for approval, he said.

The United States opened the detention facility in Guantanamo in January 2002, to hold terror suspects and Taliban members mainly captured during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.

Most those still being held there have been detained for about five years and only about 10 have been charged.

About 385 detainees are still being held there.
