“[The Turks] are facing an immediate threat to their southern border [with Syria]. As a partner [of Turkey] -- bilaterally and also in NATO -- we’re attuned to it. [...] This is one of those times when we talk about our shared interests and Turkey’s interests in Syria right now are the same as ours. “One of the biggest things [i.e. threats], and not only for Turkey, but the entire region and the world is […] [the Syrian regime’s] deployment of weapons of mass destruction, and chemical ones, of course. If the slightest suggestion of such an attempt should emerge, not only Turkey, but the attitude of the entire globe is going to change forever. And that's my biggest concern. […] In the light of the intelligence that we have received so far, they are still being possessed by the [Syrian] regime. […] [I]f you were to ask me if those weapons of mass destruction could be used against the people of Syria, in the light of everything that we have seen so far, I can say, yes, those weapons can be used against the people of Syria. And this is something that slipped out of the tongue of Bashar al-Assad.”
