Iraq under attack by US, France, Saudi Arabia

VOLTAIRE NETWORK | 11 JUNE 2014
http://www.voltairenet.org/article184211.html

The Al-Qaeda linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant

On 10 June, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on parliament to declare a state of emergency.

The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on behalf of Prince Abdul Rahman al-Faisal, the brother of the current Saudi Foreign Minister and of the Saudi ambassador in Washington. He is funded and supervised jointly by U.S., French and Saudi officers. Over the past month, he has received new weapons from Ukraine, where Saudi Arabia has acquired a weapons factory, and via Turkey, which has created a special rail line adjacent to a military airport to supply the ISIL.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is an Iraqi who joined Al-Qaeda to fight against President Saddam Hussein. During the U.S. invasion, he distinguished himself by engaging in several actions against Shiites and Christians (including the taking of the Baghdad Cathedral) and by ushering in an Islamist reign of terror (he presided over an Islamic court which sentenced many Iraqis to be slaughtered in public). After the departure of Paul Bremer III, al-Baghdadi was arrested and incarcerated at Camp Bucca from 2005 to 2009. This period saw the dissolution of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, whose fighters merged into a group of tribal resistance, theIslamic State of Iraq.

On 16 May 2010, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named emir of the ISI, which was in the process of disintegration. After the departure of U.S. troops, he staged operations against the government al-Maliki, accused of being at the service of Iran. In 2013, after vowing allegiance to Al-Qaeda, he took off with his group to continue the jihad in Syria, rebaptizing it Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. In doing so, he challenged the privileges that Ayman al-Zawahiri had previously granted, on behalf of Al-Qaeda, to the Al-Nusra Front in Syria, which was originally nothing more than an extension of the ISI.

The ISIL is based in Syria, where it lays siege to the city of Raqqa, the only city whose population was unable to participate in the June 3rd presidential election (together with the Syrians residing in France and Germany).

ISIS Leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi Trained by Israeli Mossad, NSA Documents Reveal

By Gulf Daily News
Global Research, July 16, 2014
Gulf Daily News
http://www.globalresearch.ca/isis-leader-abu-bakr-al-baghdadi-trained- by-israeli-mossad-nsa-documents-reveal/5391593

The former employee at US National Security Agency (NSA), Edward Snowden, has revealed that the British and American intelligence and the Mossad worked together to create the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Snowden said intelligence services of three countries created a terrorist organisation that is able to attract all extremists of the world to one place, using a strategy called “the hornet’s nest”.

NSA documents refer to recent implementation of the hornet’s nest to protect the Zionist entity by creating religious and Islamic slogans.

According to documents released by Snowden, “The only solution for the protection of the Jewish state “is to create an enemy near its borders”.

Leaks revealed that ISIS leader and cleric Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi took intensive military training for a whole year in the hands of Mossad, besides courses in theology and the art of speech.

Brandon Martinez: ISIL Is Being Aided and Abetted by Israel
http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13930515000176

TEHRAN (FNA)- Brandon Martinez, a Canadian journalist and freelance writer, believes that the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) is the co-product of the Israeli regime and the United States who are supporting it financially and militarily.
According to Brandon Martinez, ISIL is pursuing a Zionist agenda that was set out in 1980s by a fanatic Israeli strategist Oded Yinon who had envisaged the balkanization of the Middle East nations that are not supportive of Israel’s expansionistic, imperial agenda.

“Recently we saw Israel bomb several Syrian military sites to aid the ISIL insurgency in the south of the country, which illustrates quite clearly that ISIL is being aided and abetted by Tel Aviv as part of a broader Zionist destabilization plot in Syria,” said Brandon Martinez in an interview with Fars News Agency.

“Israel’s ultimate agenda, as outlined in the [Oded] Yinon document and other Israeli geopolitical manifestos, is to have Muslims and Arabs fighting and squabbling amongst themselves so that nobody can challenge its hegemony and also so that it can get away with the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine with little protest from the outside world,” he added.

As said by Mr. Martinez, it’s in the best interests of Israel to ignite infighting and dispute among the Muslims and Arab nations, while in effect the different Muslim denominations, including the Shiites and Sunnis, are not at odds and always lived in peaceful coexistence as long as the foreign powers don’t pit them against each other.

Brandon Martinez is a journalist and freelance writer with a special focus on the foreign policy issues and Middle East current affairs. A critic of the “farcical War on Terror”, he has long blogged on Zionism, Israel-Palestine, American and Canadian foreign policy, war, terrorism and deception in media and politics. Martinez is a frequent contributor to Press TV.

What follows is the text of FNA’s interview with Mr. Brandon Martinez on the recent rise of the ISIL in Iraq and Syria and their relationship with the world powers.

Q: Brandon; what do you think are the ultimate objectives of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant? Why have they embarked on a project of rabblerousing and igniting sectarian conflict in the region?

A: I believe the stated goal of ISIL to create an “Islamic caliphate” in the Middle East is just a cover story for a more sinister agenda. In my opinion, the real objective of ISIL is to deliberately blacken the name of Islam as well as to purposefully cause sectarian strife across the Muslim world. As we have seen, ISIL militants have engaged in medieval savagery and have often videotaped their brutalities for the world to see. They commit these heinous inhuman acts, such as beheadings, mass shootings, etc., in the name of Islam by flying Islamic banners and symbols. But the fact is that most of those targeted and victimized by the group are Muslims.

ISIL is not waging a “jihad” against the bandit state of Israel, which kills and injures thousands of Arabs and Muslims each year; nor is the group acting against the corrupt dictatorships plaguing the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, etc.) Yet ISIL radicals have a menacing presence in Syria and Iraq, two Arab, Muslim countries neighboring Israel that the Zionists have long sought to weaken and subjugate for the sake of “Greater Israel.” This is hardly a coincidence. In my honest opinion, ISIL is nothing more than a conglomeration of hardened criminals, psychopaths and murder-for-hire thugs in the employ of the Americans, the Israelis and the Saudis.

Q: Can we consider the threat of the disintegration and balkanization of Iraq serious? Is the ISIL capable of realizing its plans for dominating Iraq and Syria and destroying their sovereign governments?

A: ISIL is certainly a formidable threat to the sovereignty and well-being ofIraq, Syria and other Middle Eastern countries. As we have seen over the past few years, the ISIL, Al-Nusra insurgency in Syria has thrown the entire country into chaos and devastation. The terror group is relatively well-armed, well-trained and well-organized and its fighters are ruthless fanatics consumed by a violent ideology. The current Iraqi government under Maliki is weak and fragile, as it has to deal with so many other problems plaguing the country. Now faced with ISIL incursions into major Iraqi cities, the Maliki regime may well collapse under the pressure. No matter how many setbacks ISIL suffers, they always seem to recuperate and launch more attacks. ISIL’s Israeli, American, Saudi backers seem willing to throw infinite amounts of money and resources at the group. If that support continues indefinitely, the governments of Iraq and Syria may not be able to withstand the ISIL onslaught. Let’s hope that is not the case.

Q: In one of your recent articles, you noted that fragmenting and weakening the Middle East has been part and parcel of the Israeli regime’s plans for the Middle East. You cited the Zionist strategist Oded Yinon as writing in 1982 that “[e]very kind of inter-Arab confrontation” will assist Israel in the short run and “will shorten the way to the more important aim of breaking up Iraq into denominations as in Syria and in Lebanon.” So can we conclude that the ISIL and the Al-Nusra Front are being funded and equipped in part by the Israeli regime, while it apparently sounds like they are Muslim fighters trying to establish an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East?

A: Yes, I have drawn that conclusion indeed. Recently we saw Israel bomb several Syrian military sites to aid the ISIL insurgency in the south of the country, which illustrates quite clearly that ISIL is being aided and abetted by Tel Aviv as part of a broader Zionist destabilization plot in Syria. Israel’s ultimate agenda, as outlined in the Yinon document and other Israeli geopolitical manifestos, is to have Muslims and Arabs fighting and squabbling amongst themselves so that nobody can challenge its hegemony and also so that it can get away with the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine with little protest from the outside world. With international attention focused on the turmoil happening in Syria and Iraq, Israel escapes the gaze of the international community and can move forward with its imperialist objectives relatively unnoticed. Israeli PM Netanyahu for instance has pointed to the atrocities occurring in Syria and Iraq as “proof” that the Arab, Muslim world is inherently backwards and uncivilized and that Israel is the only civilized, rational actor in the region. What Netanyahu failed to mention is that he and his gang in Tel Aviv are the hidden hand behind much of the unrest in the Middle East.

Q: Do you consider the current crisis in Iraq and Syria the result of a division between the Shiites and the Sunnis? Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has said that the different Islamic denominations, including the Shiites and Sunnis, don’t have any conflict or dispute with each other, and what is burning the region in unrest is foreign intervention combined with the greediness of the extremist, fundamentalist sects for furthering their territorial ambitions. What’s your take on that?

A: I believe the Sunni-Shia divide is largely a manufactured one. This type of sectarian rivalry was relatively benign until the US invaded Iraq on false pretenses in 2003 on behalf of the Israeli regime. Israeli geopolitical thinkers like Oded Yinon talked about pitting different Middle Eastern ethnic and religious factions against one another as a strategy of tension. This is exactly what we see unfolding today in Syria, Iraq and other states in the region. There may well be some fanatics in both the Sunni and Shia camps who are promoting division and distrust, but such people are little more than useful idiots for the imperial powers who are bent on subjugating the various peoples of the Middle East. The US and Israel are covertly supporting the fundamentalist, sectarian groups as proxies to accomplish their goals. The only beneficiary of such a conflict between the Sunni and the Shia is Israel and the US. The Zionists have made it an art form to trick others into confrontations that ultimately benefit Israel. Muslims must wake up and realize who the real enemy of their religion is – and it is not other members of their religion.

Q: It’s reported that around 3,000 of the ISIL fighters in Syria and Iraq are foreigners. Aren’t the United States and the European countries afraid of the returning of these terrorists to their countries? How do they justify the presence of their citizens in the ranks of terrorists fighting in a distant country thousands of miles away?

A: It is very hard to believe that these militants emanating from Western countries aren’t known to the intelligence agencies; the very same spy agencies that have the capability to tap everybody’s phone, as former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed. These people presumably pass through security check-ins at airports and border crossings, yet Western governments have routinely failed to detain any of them before they reach their destination or upon their return back home. This isn’t believable. In my opinion, the US and other Western countries are covertly allowing these malcontents to make their way to Syria and Iraq; perhaps even aiding and abetting their travels. To comprehend this you must understand that these Western countries are not acting in the interests of their own respective nations, but have prioritized the interests of a foreign state above their own; that state is Israel.

Q: Some military analysts have said that ISIL possesses remarkable and advanced armament and military equipment, and since its manpower is made of foreign fighters and prisoner escapees, it can carry out its operations and hit the targets without difficulty. Who is equipping ISIL and providing it with the state-of-the-art armament it currently possesses? Is it really possible for a fundamentalist cult to conquer and gain control over so many cities and provinces without the support and sponsorship of foreign powers?

A: ISIL is a Frankenstein monster manufactured in the laboratories of the CIA and Mossad. ISIL is undoubtedly receiving military armaments from abroad. It has been demonstrated that ISIL’s advanced weaponry, including chemical weapons, originates from the US, Saudi Arabia and other places. ISIL most likely attains weapons from the black market as well; the black market weapons trade is dominated by the American and Israeli secret services. The group’s meteoric rise is not simply owed to the fanaticism of its members. Nobody would even have heard of this group if not for the financial and military backing of its American, Israeli and Saudi benefactors. The crisis in Syria is not the result of indigenous discontent with the government of Bashar al-Assad. Most members of ISIL and al-Nusra Front are not even Syrians. The chaos reigning down upon that Arab country was scripted in Washington and Tel Aviv a long time ago.

Q: The U.S. Department of State and the European powers as well as international organizations such as the UN Security Council have so far refused to brand ISIL a terrorist organization, and the Western security experts mostly talk of it as a “militant organization” rather than a terrorist group; this is while they claim that they have no interest in the empowerment and rise of the ISIL. How do you explain this? How can we interpret the U.S. approach to the current turmoil in the region? Is it really the case that the U.S. officials prefer to stay away from the developments and let the ISIL move forward with its devilish plans for the balkanization of Iraq and Syria?

A: It is very interesting indeed that the US and Europe refuse to brand ISIL a terrorist organization, despite the group’s crystal clear track-record of blood-curdling atrocities against civilians, including women, children and elderly. At the same time many Western governments, under Israeli pressure, have designated Hamas and Hezbollah, two clear enemies of Israel, as “terrorist groups.” The reality is that ISIL is not a clear enemy of Israel and is in fact a geopolitical tool of the Zionists. As such the US and Europe are not eager to put the terrorist label on ISIL and thereby undermine the group’s support networks. If the US and EU were to slap the “terrorist” distinction on ISIL it would be illegal to provide that group with money or weaponry under international and even national laws. Since the US and many European powers are overtly and covertly supporting the ISIL terrorists, these governments will likely never label it a terrorist organization.

The US policy has been one of extreme partisanship in favor of the “rebels” in Syria. It has contributed in no small way to the havoc and mayhem plaguing that nation, and deliberately so. Now that the world has seen what these “rebels” are truly all about, mass murder and carnage, Washington is, on the surface, distancing itself from them, but only on the surface. The covert support for ISIL and al-Nusra Front will continue on through the CIA’s back-channels.

US foreign policy in the Middle East has, for many decades, been guided by Israel’s imperial desires. America’s current policies vis-à-vis Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and other Arab-Muslim countries clearly underscore that reality. Destabilization is a Zionist stratagem to divide and conquer Israel’s Middle Eastern adversaries and competitors. It doesn’t serve any true US national interest to pursue this bull-headed approach to the Muslim world, but it does advance Israel’s regional goals as well as the broader Zionist-Neocon pursuit of a “clash of civilizations” between the West and the Islamic world.

In this respect, we must view Washington’s destructive and scandalous actions in the Middle East and North Africa as an extension of Tel Aviv’s pernicious agenda.

In the spring of 1947 Hassan al-Banna, an Egyptian watchmaker, schoolteacher and widely read self-taught religious activist, addressed a critique of Egyptian institutions to King Farouk. It offered an Islamic alternative to the secular state.

In studiedly polite yet sweeping language al-Banna outlined the principles and aspirations of the Egyptian Society of Muslim Brothers (known colloquially as the Muslim Brotherhood), the organisation he had founded in 1928 to combat what he saw as the degrading effects of foreign influence and secular ways of life.

The West, al-Banna asserted, “which was brilliant by virtue of its scientific perfection for a long time . . . is now bankrupt and in decline. Its foundations are crumbling and its institutions and guiding principles are falling apart.” Though he did not use the terms, al-Banna was arguing that what is known as the “Westphalian” world order had lost both its legitimacy and its power.

Reports say a fugitive American citizen is behind the ISIL Takfiri terrorists’ vast social media operation.
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2014/09/06/377856/american-behind-isil-me dia-operation/

Ahmad Abousamra, 32, who was born in France and raised in an upscale Boston suburb, is the son of a prominent specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He graduated from college with a degree in a technology field and has a knack with computers.

Sources say he is believed to be working with ISIL from Syria, attracting hundreds of militants from places across the world, including the United States, Britain, and Canada, through social media.

The FBI says he fled the United States in 2006 and was trained by terrorists in Yemen and Pakistan.

Last year, the FBI issued a $53,500 reward for information leading to the capture of Abousamra.

“There continues to be a worldwide search for Abousamra and he will be pursued until he is found,” FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Kieran Ramsey told ABC News on Friday.

The ISIL terrorists, of whom many are foreign militants, currently control parts of eastern Syria and Iraq’s northern and western regions, where they have been committing heinous crimes, including the mass execution of civilians and security forces.

Western officials have already voiced concern over the growing national security threat posed by the foreign militants returning from Syria and Iraq.

Why James Foley and Steven Sotloff were in Syria - Webster Tarpley (World Crisis Radio 9/6/2014) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t20KdM5R9qM

Who are the SITE Intelligence Group that distributed the Sotloff video before the jihadis?

The intelligence group offers warnings, reports and training to both the US government and commercial clients - with a specialty in online monitoring

The publication of a video showing the murder of American journalist Steven Joel Sotloff surprised even the terrorists who supported the killing. Why? Because a little-known research group known as Site Intelligence spotted the video (and alerted the media) before even the jihadis did.

Site (it stands for ‘Search for International Terrorist Entities’) is a for-profit US-based consultancy group that monitors and tracks the activities of “international terrorists and the global jihadist network”.

The group has ties to both the US government and commercial clients and specialises in monitoring the online activities of jihadis, watching discussions over the best suicide vests and how to launder money play out over forums – before issuing warnings to their clients (they also keep a regularly updated blog).

A profile of Site’s co-founder and director Rita Katz by the New Yorker magazine in 2006 described Site’s customers as “people in government […] frustrated by how long it takes to get information through official channels” as well as “people in corporate security and in the media”.

“Each day, Katz finds about a half-dozen items on the Arabic message boards that are worth distributing,” writes Benjamin Wallace-Wells in the New Yorker’s profile.

“Her researchers, who monitor English-language jihadist Web sites, often find a few more. Some are propaganda: videos taking responsibility for attacks, statements of intent to attack, announcements of allegiances or splits. Others involve tactics and weapons.”

In 2004 Katz was commended by the FBI for her contributions to counterterrorism investigations, and in 2007 her group was credited with finding the first videos of Osama bin Laden after three years of silence.

The Washington Post reported that these video messages were “snatched from al-Qaeda-affiliated Web sites by groups using a combination of computer tricks, personal connections and ingenuity to find and download password-protect content.”

So will USAF & RAF be bombing Israeli occupied territory by the weekend?
ISIS 'Hornet's Nest' terrorists filmed operating freely in Israeli occupied Golan Heights

Israel hosts Takfiri terrorists in occupied Golan Heights: Video
http://www.presstv.com/detail/2014/09/24/379798/takfiris-present-in-oc cupied-golan-video/
Wed Sep 24, 2014
Exclusive footage by Press TV shows the Takfiri terrorists in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in Syria.
In the video provided by the Press TV correspondent in the region, black-clad masked terrorists are seen holding weapons as several vehicles pass by.
The footage is not the first indication that Tel Aviv is in cahoots with the foreign-backed militant and terrorist groups inside Syria.
In August, Syria’s ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja’afari told Press TV that the Israeli regime allows the free flow of weapons and ISIL Takfiri militants into the occupied Golan Heights and then into the rest of Syria.
The Israelis help the Takfiris infiltrate into the separation line on the Golan Heights from Jordan, where their training camps are located, the Syrian diplomat said.
Regarding the video, Press TV News Director Hamid Reza Emadi said people in the Middle East “are wondering why the Takfiri terrorists only kill Muslims and Christians in Iraq and Syria, but do not act against Israel’s interests.”
"The Press TV video could answer this question since it shows how Tel Aviv welcomes the Takfiris,” he added.
In February, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid a visit to a secret field hospital in the occupied Golan Heights, where injured militants coming in from Syria receive medical treatment.
Earlier this year, Israel Channel 2 News aired footage of the secret Israeli field hospital that had reportedly treated over 700 Syrians, including militants, over the past months.
Syrian government troops have repeatedly seized large quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants in Syria.
Takfiri terrorists of the ISIL control large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq, where they have committed heinous crimes against government forces and civilians.

Evidence exposing who put ISIS in power, and how it was done.
The Islamic militant group ISIS, formerly known as Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and recently rebranded as the so called Islamic State, is the stuff of nightmares. They are ruthless, fanatical, killers, on a mission, and that mission is to wipe out anyone and everyone, from any religion or belief system and to impose Shari'ah law. The mass executions, beheadings and even crucifixions that they are committing as they work towards this goal are flaunted like badges of pride, video taped and uploaded for the whole world to see. This is the new face of evil.

Would it interest you to know who helped these psychopaths rise to power? Would it interest you to know who armed them, funded them and trained them? Would it interest you to know why?

This story makes more sense if we start in the middle, so we'll begin with the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The Libyan revolution was Obama's first major foreign intervention. It was portrayed as an extension of the Arab Spring, and NATO involvement was framed in humanitarian terms.

The fact that the CIA was actively working to help the Libyan rebels topple Gaddafi was no secret, nor were the airstrikes that Obama ordered against the Libyan government. However, little was said about the identity or the ideological leanings of these Libyan rebels. Not surprising, considering the fact that the leader of the Libyan rebels later admitted that his fighters included Al-Qaeda linked jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq.

These jihadist militants from Iraq were part of what national security analysts commonly referred to as Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Remember Al-Qaeda in Iraq was ISIS before it was rebranded.

With the assistance of U.S. and NATO intelligence and air support, the Libyan rebels captured Gaddafi and summarily executed him in the street, all the while enthusiastically chanting "Allah Akbar". For many of those who had bought the official line about how these rebels were freedom fighters aiming to establish a liberal democracy in Libya, this was the beginning of the end of their illusions.

As the UK prepares for another war in Iraq, is its strategy any more coherent than in 2003?
Patrick Cockburn, who led the world in warning of the rise of Isis, wonders if David Cameron has really thought through his plans
PATRICK COCKBURN - Thursday 25 September 2014
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/on-the-eve-of-yet-another- war-in-iraq-is-the-uks-strategy-any-more-coherent-than-in-2003-9756567 .html
...For instance, we should defeat “the ideology of extremism that is the root cause of terrorism”, but there is nothing concrete about the origins of this narrow and bigoted ideology which condemns Shia as heretics and apostates, treats women as second-class citizens and maligns Christians and Jews.
In fact, the belief system of Isis is little different from Wahhabism, the variant of Islam prevalent in Saudi Arabia. Supported by Saudi wealth, Wahhabism has gained an ever-increasing influence over mainstream Sunni Islam in the last 50 years. Politicians like Mr Cameron are much happier condemning school governors in Birmingham for religious extremism than they are complaining to the Saudi ambassador in London about the virulent sectarianism of Saudi school books.

Another western war won’t end terror in Iraq or Syria. It will only spread it
Bombing and more intervention can’t destroy Isis. The US is at the heart of the crisis in the Middle East
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/18/another-western-w ar-spread-terror-isis-us-crisis
Seumas Milne - The Guardian, Thursday 18 September 2014
...The alternative to Obama’s new Middle East war is concerted pressure for UN-backed agreement between the main regional powers, including Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia, to wind down the Syria conflict and back a genuine unity government in Iraq. An end to western support for the Egyptian dictatorship would also help.
Bombing will not destroy Isis, but win it sympathy – or even cause it to mutate into something worse. Only Iraqis and Syrians can defeat Isis. But the US remains determined to keep control of the Middle East, while being unable to find a stable way of doing it. So its response to every failure of intervention is more intervention. The US and its allies are at the heart of the problem in the Middle East, not the solution.

Britain’s involvement in the new Iraq war is a doomed and dangerous gesture
With no proper strategy, the return to conflict will only reinforce the politics of fear that is the grimmest legacy of the Blair era

Syrian air-strikes: Does the US have the foggiest idea who their enemy is?
America's bombing of Jabhat al-Nusra has raised significant concerns over their strategy
KIM SENGUPTA - Monday 29 September 2014
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/syrian-airstrikes-does-the -us-have-the-foggiest-idea-of-who-their-enemy-is-9763439.html

The fog of war has been a recurrent theme through time, the confusion and misapprehension that comes amid the clamour and fury of combat. Even in these early days of the war against Isis, the fog appears to be descending fast with no clear strategy in view and a moving gallery of enemies.

Barack Obama admits that his administration underestimated the threat posed by Isis and overestimated the capabilities of the Iraqi military. This is surprising; the rise to dominance of the Islamist group in Syria, and the damage done by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to his country’s forces through sectarian policies had been extensively charted by the media.

The real confusion began when the campaign moved on to Syria, a necessary step. Instead of just attacking Isis, the US also bombed Jabhat al-Nusra, affiliated to al-Qaeda but which had fought against Isis and was loosely allied with the “moderate” rebels whom the West is sponsoring.

Just before the attack, there was a slew of media reports in the US about a group called Khorasan, linked to al-Nusra, and accounts of how it was more dangerous and extreme than Isis, which, we had already been told, was more dangerous and extreme than al-Qaeda. Not just that, but there was an imminent plot by Khorasan’s master bomb-makers to bring down airliners.

Some of us who have spent time with the rebels inside Syria were caught on the hop, we had not even heard of Khorasan, apart from as an historic name for a caliphate in south-central Asia. “This just shows how much out of touch we are, we need to get back in there,” a colleague from another newspaper pointed out gloomily. It is the case that recent international reporting from Syria has been from those who had gone in with the regime; coverage of opposition areas has dropped dramatically after a spate of kidnappings of journalists. The murder of our friend Jim Foley is still vivid in the minds of many of us.

But could it be that we have not heard of Khorasan because it does not exist, certainly under that name? And, furthermore, there was no attack imminent?

Andrew McCarthy, a former US federal terrorism prosecutor was blunt in the National Review magazine: “You haven’t heard of the Khorasan group because there isn’t one. It is a name the administration came up with calculating that Khorasan had sufficient connection to jihadist lore [so] that no one would call the President on it.”

Aki Peritz, a former CIA counterterrorism specialist told Time magazine: “I had never heard of this group while working for the CIA”.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, wanted to counter those who quibbled about the imminence of an attack. “I don’t know that we can pin that down to a day or month or week or six months. We can have this debate about whether it was too soon or too late… We hit them, and I don’t think we need to throw up a dossier to prove that these are bad dudes.”

A Tornado GR4 alongside a Voyager refuelling aircraft during the RAF’s first combat mission against Isis in northern Iraq A Tornado GR4 alongside a Voyager refuelling aircraft during the RAF’s first combat mission against Isis in northern Iraq

One theory is that US officials “revealed” Khorasan to justify bombing al-Nusra, knowing the sensitivities this entailed. If that was the aim, it has not worked; al-Nusra and Isis are holding meetings to coordinate vengeance attacks. And the attack on “Khorasan” will make supposed ground operations by the Peshmerga, what’s left of the Free Syrian Army and friendly Arab states, accompanying the air strikes, that much more difficult.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia 'have ignited time bomb by funding global spread of radical Islam'

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have ignited a "time bomb" by funding the global spread of radical Islam, according to a former commander of British forces in Iraq.
General Jonathan Shaw, who retired as Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff in 2012, told The Telegraph that Qatar and Saudi Arabia were primarily responsible for the rise of the extremist Islam that inspires Isil terrorists.
The two Gulf states have spent billions of dollars on promoting a militant and proselytising interpretation of their faith derived from Abdul Wahhab, an eighteenth century scholar, and based on the Salaf, or the original followers of the Prophet.
But the rulers of both countries are now more threatened by their creation than Britain or America, argued Gen Shaw. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) has vowed to topple the Qatari and Saudi regimes, viewing both as corrupt outposts of decadence and sin.
So Qatar and Saudi Arabia have every reason to lead an ideological struggle against Isil, said Gen Shaw. On its own, he added, the West's military offensive against the terrorist movement was likely to prove "futile".
"This is a time bomb that, under the guise of education, Wahhabi Salafism is igniting under the world really. And it is funded by Saudi and Qatari money and that must stop," said Gen Shaw. "And the question then is 'does bombing people over there really tackle that?' I don't think so. I'd far rather see a much stronger handle on the ideological battle rather than the physical battle."
Gen Shaw, 57, retired from the Army after a 31-year career that saw him lead a platoon of paratroopers in the Battle of Mount Longdon, the bloodiest clash of the Falklands War, and oversee Britain's withdrawal from Basra in southern Iraq. As Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff, he specialised in counter-terrorism and security policy.
All this has made him acutely aware of the limitations of what force can achieve. He believes that Isil can only be defeated by political and ideological means. Western air strikes in Iraq and Syria will, in his view, achieve nothing except temporary tactical success.
When it comes to waging that ideological struggle, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are pivotal. "The root problem is that those two countries are the only two countries in the world where Wahhabi Salafism is the state religion – and Isil is a violent expression of Wahabist Salafism," said Gen Shaw.
"The primary threat of Isil is not to us in the West: it's to Saudi Arabia and also to the other Gulf states."
Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia are playing small parts in the air campaign against Isil, contributing two and four jet fighters respectively. But Gen Shaw said they "should be in the forefront" and, above all, leading an ideological counter-revolution against Isil.
The British and American air campaign would not "stop the support of people in Qatar and Saudi Arabia for this kind of activity," added Gen Shaw. "It's missing the point. It might, if it works, solve the immediate tactical problem. It's not addressing the fundamental problem of Wahhabi Salafism as a culture and a creed, which has got out of control and is still the ideological basis of Isil – and which will continue to exist even if we stop their advance in Iraq."
Gen Shaw said the Government's approach towards Isil was fundamentally mistaken. "People are still treating this as a military problem, which is in my view to misconceive the problem," he added. "My systemic worry is that we're repeating the mistakes that we made in Afghanistan and Iraq: putting the military far too up front and centre in our response to the threat without addressing the fundamental political question and the causes. The danger is that yet again we're taking a symptomatic treatment not a causal one."
Gen Shaw said that Isil's main focus was on toppling the established regimes of the Middle East, not striking Western targets. He questioned whether Isil's murder of two British and two American hostages was sufficient justification for the campaign.
"Isil made their big incursion into Iraq in June. The West did nothing, despite thousands of people being killed," said Gen Shaw. "What's changed in the last month? Beheadings on TV of Westerners. And that has led us to suddenly change our policy and suddenly launch air attacks."
He believes that Isil might have murdered the hostages in order to provoke a military response from America and Britain which could then be portrayed as a Christian assault on Islam. "What possible advantage is there to Isil of bringing us into this campaign?" asked Gen Shaw. "Answer: to unite the Muslim world against the Christian world. We played into their hands. We've done what they wanted us to do."
However, Gen Shaw's analysis is open to question. Even if they had the will, the rulers of Saudi Arabia and Qatar may be incapable of leading an ideological struggle against Isil. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is 91 and only sporadically active. His chosen successor, Crown Prince Salman, is 78 and already believed to be declining into senility. The kingdom's ossified leadership is likely to be paralysed for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile in Qatar, the new Emir, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, is only 34 in a region that respects age. Whether this Harrow and Sandhurst-educated ruler has the personal authority to lead an ideological counter-revolution within Islam is doubtful.
Given that Saudi Arabia and Qatar almost certainly cannot do what Gen Shaw believes to be necessary, the West may have no option except to take military action against Isil with the aim of reducing, if not eliminating, the terrorist threat.
"I just have a horrible feeling that we're making things worse. We're entering into this in a way we just don't understand," said Gen Shaw. "I'm against the principle of us attacking without a clear political plan."

From Pol Pot to ISIS: “Anything that flies on everything that moves”
8 October 2014
http://johnpilger.com/articles/from-pol-pot-to-isis-anything-that-flie s-on-everything-that-moves
blair_kiss_3.JPG
In transmitting President Richard Nixon's orders for a "massive" bombing of Cambodia in 1969, Henry Kissinger said, "Anything that flies on everything that moves". As Barack Obama ignites his seventh war against the Muslim world since he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the orchestrated hysteria and lies make one almost nostalgic for Kissinger's murderous honesty.

As a witness to the human consequences of aerial savagery - including the beheading of victims, their parts festooning trees and fields - I am not surprised by the disregard of memory and history, yet again. A telling example is the rise to power of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge, who had much in common with today's Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). They, too, were ruthless medievalists who began as a small sect. They, too, were the product of an American-made apocalypse, this time in Asia.

According to Pol Pot, his movement had consisted of "fewer than 5,000 poorly armed guerrillas uncertain about their strategy, tactics, loyalty and leaders". Once Nixon's and Kissinger's B52 bombers had gone to work as part of "Operation Menu", the west's ultimate demon could not believe his luck.

The Americans dropped the equivalent of five Hiroshimas on rural Cambodia during 1969-73. They levelled village after village, returning to bomb the rubble and corpses. The craters left monstrous necklaces of carnage, still visible from the air. The terror was unimaginable. A former Khmer Rouge official described how the survivors "froze up and they would wander around mute for three or four days. Terrified and half-crazy, the people were ready to believe what they were told... That was what made it so easy for the Khmer Rouge to win the people over."

A Finnish Government Commission of Enquiry estimated that 600,000 Cambodians died in the ensuing civil war and described the bombing as the "first stage in a decade of genocide". What Nixon and Kissinger began, Pol Pot, their beneficiary, completed. Under their bombs, the Khmer Rouge grew to a formidable army of 200,000.

ISIS has a similar past and present. By most scholarly measure, Bush and Blair's invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to the deaths of some 700,000 people - in a country that had no history of jihadism. The Kurds had done territorial and political deals; Sunni and Shia had class and sectarian differences, but they were at peace; intermarriage was common. Three years before the invasion, I drove the length of Iraq without fear. On the way I met people proud, above all, to be Iraqis, the heirs of a civilization that seemed, for them, a presence.

Bush and Blair blew all this to bits. Iraq is now a nest of jihadism. Al-Qaeda - like Pol Pot's "jihadists" - seized the opportunity provided by the onslaught of Shock and Awe and the civil war that followed. "Rebel" Syria offered even greater rewards, with CIA and Gulf state ratlines of weapons, logistics and money running through Turkey. The arrival of foreign recruits was inevitable. A former British ambassador, Oliver Miles, wrote recently, "The [Cameron] government seems to be following the example of Tony Blair, who ignored consistent advice from the Foreign Office, MI5 and MI6 that our Middle East policy - and in particular our Middle East wars - had been a principal driver in the recruitment of Muslims in Britain for terrorism here."

ISIS is the progeny of those in Washington and London who, in destroying Iraq as both a state and a society, conspired to commit an epic crime against humanity. Like Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, ISIS are the mutations of a western state terror dispensed by a venal imperial elite undeterred by the consequences of actions taken at great remove in distance and culture. Their culpability is unmentionable in "our" societies.

It is 23 years since this holocaust enveloped Iraq, immediately after the first Gulf War, when the US and Britain hijacked the United Nations Security Council and imposed punitive "sanctions" on the Iraqi population - ironically, reinforcing the domestic authority of Saddam Hussein. It was like a medieval siege. Almost everything that sustained a modern state was, in the jargon, "blocked" - from chlorine for making the water supply safe to school pencils, parts for X-ray machines, common painkillers and drugs to combat previously unknown cancers carried in the dust from the southern battlefields contaminated with Depleted Uranium.

Just before Christmas 1999, the Department of Trade and Industry in London restricted the export of vaccines meant to protect Iraqi children against diphtheria and yellow fever. Kim Howells, parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Blair government, explained why. "The children's vaccines", he said, "were capable of being used in weapons of mass destruction". The British Government could get away with such an outrage because media reporting of Iraq - much of it manipulated by the Foreign Office - blamed Saddam Hussein for everything.

Under a bogus "humanitarian" Oil for Food Programme, $100 was allotted for each Iraqi to live on for a year. This figure had to pay for the entire society's infrastructure and essential services, such as power and water. "Imagine," the UN Assistant Secretary General, Hans Von Sponeck, told me, "setting that pittance against the lack of clean water, and the fact that the majority of sick people cannot afford treatment, and the sheer trauma of getting from day to day, and you have a glimpse of the nightmare. And make no mistake, this is deliberate. I have not in the past wanted to use the word genocide, but now it is unavoidable."

Disgusted, Von Sponeck resigned as UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Iraq. His predecessor, Denis Halliday, an equally distinguished senior UN official, had also resigned. "I was instructed," Halliday said, "to implement a policy that satisfies the definition of genocide: a deliberate policy that has effectively killed well over a million individuals, children and adults."

A study by the United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef, found that between 1991 and 1998, the height of the blockade, there were 500,000 "excess" deaths of Iraqi infants under the age of five. An American TV reporter put this to Madeleine Albright, US Ambassador to the United Nations, asking her, "Is the price worth it?" Albright replied, "We think the price is worth it."

In 2007, the senior British official responsible for the sanctions, Carne Ross, known as "Mr. Iraq", told a parliamentary selection committee, "[The US and UK governments] effectively denied the entire population a means to live." When I interviewed Carne Ross three years later, he was consumed by regret and contrition. "I feel ashamed," he said. He is today a rare truth-teller of how governments deceive and how a compliant media plays a critical role in disseminating and maintaining the deception. "We would feed [journalists] factoids of sanitised intelligence," he said, "or we'd freeze them out."

On 25 September, a headline in the Guardian read: "Faced with the horror of Isis we must act." The "we must act" is a ghost risen, a warning of the suppression of informed memory, facts, lessons learned and regrets or shame. The author of the article was Peter Hain, the former Foreign Office minister responsible for Iraq under Blair. In 1998, when Denis Halliday revealed the extent of the suffering in Iraq for which the Blair Government shared primary responsibility, Hain abused him on the BBC's Newsnight as an "apologist for Saddam". In 2003, Hain backed Blair's invasion of stricken Iraq on the basis of transparent lies. At a subsequent Labour Party conference, he dismissed the invasion as a "fringe issue".

Now Hain is demanding "air strikes, drones, military equipment and other support" for those "facing genocide" in Iraq and Syria. This will further "the imperative of a political solution". Obama has the same in mind as he lifts what he calls the "restrictions" on US bombing and drone attacks. This means that missiles and 500-pound bombs can smash the homes of peasant people, as they are doing without restriction in Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia - as they did in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. On 23 September, a Tomahawk cruise missile hit a village in Idlib Province in Syria, killing as many as a dozen civilians, including women and children. None waved a black flag.

The day Hain's article appeared, Denis Halliday and Hans Von Sponeck happened to be in London and came to visit me. They were not shocked by the lethal hypocrisy of a politician, but lamented the enduring, almost inexplicable absence of intelligent diplomacy in negotiating a semblance of truce. Across the world, from Northern Ireland to Nepal, those regarding each other as terrorists and heretics have faced each other across a table. Why not now in Iraq and Syria.

Like Ebola from West Africa, a bacteria called "perpetual war" has crossed the Atlantic. Lord Richards, until recently head of the British military, wants "boots on the ground" now. There is a vapid, almost sociopathic verboseness from Cameron, Obama and their "coalition of the willing" - notably Australia's aggressively weird Tony Abbott - as they prescribe more violence delivered from 30,000 feet on places where the blood of previous adventures never dried. They have never seen bombing and they apparently love it so much they want it to overthrow their one potentially valuable ally, Syria. This is nothing new, as the following leaked UK-US intelligence file illustrates:

"In order to facilitate the action of liberative [sic] forces... a special effort should be made to eliminate certain key individuals [and] to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria. CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals... a necessary degree of fear... frontier and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention... the CIA and SIS should use... capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension."

That was written in 1957, though it could have been written yesterday. In the imperial world, nothing essentially changes. Last year, the former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas revealed that "two years before the Arab spring", he was told in London that a war on Syria was planned. "I am going to tell you something," he said in an interview with the French TV channel LPC, "I was in England two years before the violence in Syria on other business. I met top British officials, who confessed to me that they were preparing something in Syria... Britain was organising an invasion of rebels into Syria. They even asked me, although I was no longer Minister for Foreign Affairs, if I would like to participate... This operation goes way back. It was prepared, preconceived and planned."

The only effective opponents of ISIS are accredited demons of the west - Syria, Iran, Hezbollah. The obstacle is Turkey, an "ally" and a member of Nato, which has conspired with the CIA, MI6 and the Gulf medievalists to channel support to the Syrian "rebels", including those now calling themselves ISIS. Supporting Turkey in its long-held ambition for regional dominance by overthrowing the Assad government beckons a major conventional war and the horrific dismemberment of the most ethnically diverse state in the Middle East.

A truce - however difficult to achieve - is the only way out of this imperial maze; otherwise, the beheadings will continue. That genuine negotiations with Syria should be seen as "morally questionable" (the Guardian) suggests that the assumptions of moral superiority among those who supported the war criminal Blair remain not only absurd, but dangerous.

Together with a truce, there should be an immediate cessation of all shipments of war materials to Israel and recognition of the State of Palestine. The issue of Palestine is the region's most festering open wound, and the oft-stated justification for the rise of Islamic extremism. Osama bin Laden made that clear. Palestine also offers hope. Give justice to the Palestinians and you begin to change the world around them.

More than 40 years ago, the Nixon-Kissinger bombing of Cambodia unleashed a torrent of suffering from which that country has never recovered. The same is true of the Blair-Bush crime in Iraq. With impeccable timing, Henry Kissinger's latest self-serving tome has just been released with its satirical title, "World Order". In one fawning review, Kissinger is described as a "key shaper of a world order that remained stable for a quarter of a century". Tell that to the people of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Chile, East Timor and all the other victims of his "statecraft". Only when "we" recognise the war criminals in our midst will the blood begin to dry.

The killer article! Thierry Meyssan does it again, from the 'Pentagon' missing Boeing, to Kobane!!:
Will Washington succeed in having Northern Syria ethnically cleansed?:
http://www.voltairenet.org/article185587.html

'At Kobané and in its region, where more than 300,000 Syrian Kurds are threatened with extermination by the Islamic Emirate, everyone can take the measure of NATO’s duplicity. As the commander of the US Coalition declares he is fighting against the Islamic Emirate, a NATO member, Turkey, furnishes the latter with the military and medical assistance they need, preventing civilians from fleeing and PKK fighters from coming to their aid.

In ancient Greek theater, every spectator knew the tragic end of the play in advance. The characters, blinded by the gods, continued to act out what they pretended to reject with their words. But the choir revealed the projects of Destiny for the spectators.
The tragedy that is being played out at Kobané (Arabic Ain al-Arab) was written to conclude with the announced genocide of 300,000 Syrian Kurds. The Islamic Emirate has already taken control of several parts of the city and many surrounding villages. If the Syrian Arab Army fails to breach the lines of the Islamic Emirate to save them, they will all be killed.
The Kurdish population is defended by PYG (autonomist party supporting the Syrian Arab Republic), but Turkey has closed its border so that civilians cannot escape and the reinforcements of the Turkish PKK (separatist party linked to PYG) cannot arrive.
Kurdish forces are controlled by Mahmoud Barkhodan, assisted by Narine Afrin (real name Mayssa Abdo). The choice of a woman as second in command has caused panic in the Islamic Emirate, the jihadists being convinced that they cannot enter heaven if they are killed by a woman.
Faced with the Kurdish resistance, the Islamic Emirate has transferred most of its forces to Syria to crush Kobané.
According to our analysis, repeatedly stated in these columns and in many radio and television stations in Latin America, Russia and the Muslim world, the Islamic Emirate is a creation of the United States tasked with ethnically cleansing the region in order to remodel it. Everyone can see that the soothing declarations of US leaders are belied by their military action on the ground, not against, but in favor of the Islamic Emirate.
The Coalition has conducted six waves of bombings in Kobané. It never targeted positions of the Islamic Emirate and has caused it no loss. However, it holds at a distance further south and west, the Syrian Arab Army which fails to open a breach to save the people.
The Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (pro-Israeli) refuses to help Syrian Kurds, with whom it has been in conflict for a long time. To justify this passivity, it argues that it does not have direct access to Syria.
Turkey, a NATO member, refuses to assist Syrian Kurds threatened with genocide as long as they do not give up their independent status in Syria and as long as they do not join NATO’s fight against Syria and its elected President Bashar al-Assad.
According to PYG fighters, Turkey daily supplies weapons to the Islamic Emirate and welcomes its wounded into its hospitals, while they themselves have the greatest challenges to transport injured Kurds to Turkey for medical treatment.
In Turkey, the Kurdish Islamic splinter group, Hur Dava Partisi (formerly named Hezbollah in order to create confusion with the Lebanese resistance), went to war against the PKK (Kurdish majority party in the country). The Hüda-Par (abbreviation of Hur Dava Partisi) is supported covertly by AKP chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan both to fight against Kurdish separatism and to support the Muslim Brotherhood.
On August 30th, a leader of the Islamic Emirate, Hikmet, and two of his bodyguards were killed by the PKK in Istanbul where they were staying at the invitation of Hüda-By and under the protection of the Turkish police.
In a text message sent to all its members, the PKK gave the instruction to physically eliminate all members of Hüda-Par, accused of working for the Turkish government and assisting the Islamic Emirate.
On October 10th, making a comparison with the Srebrenica massacre (Yugoslavia, 1995) the special UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, challenged Turkey to open its border to prevent the fall of Kobané and the genocide of its population. He demanded in vain that Turkey open its borders.
The head of the US Coalition, General John Allen, also publicly called upon Turkey to open its border and prevent the genocide of the Kobané Kurds. However, it does not appear that the Turkish refusal has altered relations between Washington and Ankara, on the contrary.
Turkey’s new foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said his country would not intervene as long as the Coalition formed by the United States against the Islamic Emirate (of which Turkey is a part) did not decide to impose a no-fly zone in northern Syria and has not given as its objective the overthrowing of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Moreover, the Turkish parliament authorized the government to fight both the Islamic Emirate and the PKK.
Receiving Mr. Çavuşoğlu in Paris, the French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, supported the idea of creating a "security zone" in northern Syria, without specifying exactly what he meant by that, but emphasizing his agreement with Turkey.
France, also a NATO member, is directly providing weapons to the separatist Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, without authorization from the central Iraqi government. The Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq expanded its territory by 40% in coordination with the Islamic Emirate when it seized the Iraqi Sunni Arab area. In previous years, France politically supported the Turkish PKK (pro-Syrian), she now provides militarily support to the (pro-Israeli) Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq.
Currently, the airspace in northern Syria is controlled by the coalition led by the United States. The Islamic Emirate has aircraft (MiGs stolen from Syria and F-15s stolen from Iraq), but has few pilots and technical staff to use them. The creation of a no-fly zone by NATO in Syria, in addition to being a flagrant violation of international law, would therefore have no impact on the ongoing fighting.
The idea of creating a no-fly zone in Syria was promoted by Israel, which sees it as a means to dismember this country, along the lines of what was done from 1991 to 2003 in Iraq (in favor the current Kurdistan Regional Government). However, the only valid comparison to be made is with the buffer zone imposed in 1983 during the Lebanese civil war
. Felt like an open recolonization of Lebanon, it turned into a fiasco after the elimination of 300 American and French soldiers.
In Turkey, the PKK multiplies demonstrations to force the Erdoğan government to reopen the border. 31 people have already been killed by the police during the suppression of the protests.
The only question is how long will the Syrian Kurds resist alone against jihadi armed and funded by the United States pursuant to a vote of Congress assembled in a secret session in January, 2014. In other words: when will Washington and its allies manage to ethnically cleanse northern Syria by their creature, the Islamic Emirate?
Thierry Meyssan

Direct Democracy: The Kobani Riddle:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article40053.htm

By Pepe Escobar

October 24, 2014 "ICH" - "Asia Times" - 'The brave women of Kobani - where Syrian Kurds are desperately fighting ISIS/ISIL/Daesh - are about to be betrayed by the "international community". These women warriors, apart from Caliph Ibrahim's goons, are also fighting treacherous agendas by the US, Turkey and the administration of Iraqi Kurdistan. So what's the real deal in Kobani?

Let's start by talking about Rojava. The full meaning of Rojava - the three mostly Kurdish provinces of northern Syria - is conveyed in this editorial (in Turkish) published by jailed activist Kenan Kirkaya. He argues that Rojava is the home of a "revolutionary model" that no less than challenges "the hegemony of the capitalist, nation-state system" - way beyond its regional "meaning for Kurds, or for Syrians or Kurdistan."

Kobani - an agricultural region - happens to be at the epicenter of this non-violent experiment in democracy, made possible by an arrangement early on during the Syrian tragedy between Damascus and Rojava (you don't go for regime change against us, we leave you alone). Here, for instance, it's argued that "even if only a single aspect of true socialism were able to survive there, millions of discontented people would be drawn to Kobani."

In Rojava, decision-making is via popular assemblies - multicultural and multi-religious. The top three officers in each municipality are a Kurd, an Arab and an Assyrian or Armenian Christian; and at least one of these three must be a woman. Non-Kurd minorities have their own institutions and speak their own languages.

Among a myriad of women's and youth councils, there is also an increasingly famous feminist army, the YJA Star militia ("Union of Free Women", with the "star" symbolizing Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar).

The symbolism could not be more graphic; think of the forces of Ishtar (Mesopotamia) fighting the forces of ISIS (originally an Egyptian goddess), now transmogrified into an intolerant Caliphate. In the young 21st century, it's the female barricades of Kobani that are in the forefront fighting fascism.

Inevitably there should be quite a few points of intersection between the International Brigades fighting fascism in Spain in 1936 and what is happening in Rojava, as stressed by one of the very few articles about it published in Western mainstream media.

If these components were not enough to drive crazy deeply intolerant Wahhabis and Takfiris (and their powerful Gulf petrodollar backers) then there's the overall political set up.

The fight in Rojava is essentially led by the PYD, which is the Syrian branch of the Turkish PKK, the Marxist guerrillas at war against Ankara since the 1970s. Washington, Brussels and NATO - under relentless Turkish pressure - have always officially ranked both PYD and PKK as "terrorists".

Careful examination of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan's must-read book Democratic Confederalism reveals this terrorist/Stalinist equation as bogus (Ocalan has been confined to the island-prison of Imrali since 1999.)

What the PKK - and the PYD - are striving for is "libertarian municipalism". In fact that's exactly what Rojava has been attempting; self-governing communities applying direct democracy, using as pillars councils, popular assemblies, cooperatives managed by workers - and defended by popular militias. Thus the positioning of Rojava in the vanguard of a worldwide cooperative economics/democracy movement whose ultimate target would be to bypass the concept of a nation-state.

Not only this experiment is taking place politically across northern Syria; in military terms, it was the PKK and the PYD who actually managed to rescue those tens of thousands of Yazidis corralled by ISIS/ISIL/Daesh in Mount Sinjar, and not American bombs, as the spin went. And now, as PYD co-president Asya Abdullah details, what's needed is a "corridor" to break the encirclement of Kobani by Caliph Ibrahim's goons.

Sultan Erdogan's power play
Ankara, meanwhile, seems intent to prolong a policy of "lots of problems with our neighbors."

For Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz, "the main cause of ISIS is the Syrian regime". And Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu - who invented the now defunct "zero problems with our neighbors" doctrine in the first place - has repeatedly stressed Ankara will only intervene with boots on the ground in Kobani to defend the Kurds if Washington presents a "post-Assad plan".

And then there's that larger than life character; Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, aka Sultan Erdogan.

Sultan Erdogan's edicts are well known. Syrian Kurds should fight against Damascus under the command of that lousy fiction, the reconstituted (and to be trained, of all places, in Saudi Arabia) Free Syrian Army; they should forget about any sort of autonomy; they should meekly accept Turkey's request for Washington to create a no-fly zone over Syria and also a "secured" border on Syrian territory. No wonder both the PYD and Washington have rejected these demands.

Sultan Erdogan has his eyes set on rebooting the peace process with the PKK; and he wants to lead it in a position of force. So far his only concession has been to allow Iraqi Kurd peshmergas to enter northern Syria to counter-balance the PYD-PKK militias, and thus prevent the strengthening of an anti-Turkish Kurdish axis.

At the same time Sultan Erdogan knows ISIS/ISIL/Daesh has already recruited up to 1,000 Turkish passport holders - and counting. His supplemental nightmare is that the toxic brew laying waste to "Syraq" will sooner rather than later mightily overspill inside Turkish borders.

Watch those barbarians at the gates
Caliph Ibrahim's goons have already telegraphed their intention to massacre and/or enslave the entire civilian population of Kobani. And yet Kobani, per se, has no strategic value for ISIS/ISIL/Daesh (that's what US Secretary of State John Kerry himself said last week; but then, predictably, he reversed himself). This very persuasive PYD commander though is very much aware of the ISIS/ISIL/Daesh threat.

Kobani is not essential compared to Deir ez-Zor (which has an airport supplying the Syrian Arab Army) or Hasakah (which has oil fields controlled by Kurds helped by the Syrian Arab Army). Kobani boasts no airport and no oil fields.

On the other hand, the fall of Kobani would generate immensely positive extra PR for the already very slick Caliph enterprise - widening the perception of a winning army especially among new, potential, EU passport holder recruits, as well as establishing a solid base very close to the Turkish border.

Essentially, what Sultan Erdogan is doing is to fight both Damascus (long-term) and the Kurds (medium term) while actually giving a free pass (short-term) to ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. And yet, further on down the road, Turkish journalist Fehim Tastekin is right; training non-existent "moderate" Syrian rebels in oh-so-democratic Saudi Arabia will only lead to the Pakistanization of Turkey. A remix - once again - of the scenario played out during the 1980s Afghan jihad.

As if this was not muddled enough, in a game changer - and reversing its "terrorist" dogma - Washington is now maintaining an entente cordiale with the PYD. And that poses an extra headache for Sultan Erdogan.

This give-and-take between Washington and the PYD is still up for grabs. Yet some facts on the ground spell it all out; more US bombing, more US air drops (including major fail air drops, where the freshly weaponized end up being The Caliph's goons).

A key fact should not be overlooked. As soon as the PYD was more or less "recognized" by Washington, PYD head Saleh Muslim went to meet the wily Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) leader Masoud Barzani. That's when the PYD promised a "power sharing" with Barzani's peshmergas on running Rojava.

Syrian Kurds who were forced to abandon Kobani and exile themselves in Turkey, and who support the PYD, cannot return to Syria; but Iraqi Kurds can go back and forth. This dodgy deal was brokered by the KRG's intel chief, Lahur Talabani. The KRG, crucially, gets along very well with Ankara.

That sheds further light on Erdogan's game; he wants the peshmerga - who are fierce enemies of the PKK - to become the vanguard against ISIS/ISIL/Daesh and thus undermine the PYD/PKK alliance. Once again, Turkey is pitting Kurds against Kurds.

Washington for its part is manipulating Kobani to completely legitimize - on a "humanitarian", R2P vein - its crusade against ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. It's never enough to remember this whole thing started with a barrage of Washington spin about the bogus, ghostly Khorasan group preparing a new 9-11. Khorasan, predictably, entirely vanished from the news cycle.

In the long run, the American power play is a serious threat to the direct democracy experiment in Rojava, which Washington cannot but interpret as - God forbid! - a return of communism.

So Kobani is now a crucial pawn in a pitiless game manipulated by Washington, Ankara and Irbil. None of these actors want the direct democracy experiment in Kobani and Rojava to bloom, expand and start to be noticed all across the Global South. The women of Kobani are in mortal danger of being, if not enslaved, bitterly betrayed.

And it gets even more ominous when the ISIS/ISIL/Daesh play on Kobani is seen essentially for what it is; a diversionary tactic, a trap for the Obama administration. What The Caliph's goons are really aiming at is Anbar province in Iraq - which they already largely control - and the crucial Baghdad belt. The barbarians are at the gates - not only Kobani's but also Baghdad's.'

Pepe Escobar is the author of Globalistan: How the Globalized World is Dissolving into Liquid War (Nimble Books, 2007), Red Zone Blues: a snapshot of Baghdad during the surge (Nimble Books, 2007), and Obama does Globalistan (Nimble Books, 2009). - He may be reached at pepeasia@yahoo.com.

A brilliant analysis, giving an extremely interesting perspective few of us would have been aware of.

Professor Hall: US Created ISIL to Extend So-Called War on Terror
http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13930815000320

TEHRAN (FNA)- Anthony James Hall, Canadian professor of Globalization Studies, believes that the US created ISIL Takfiri group in an attempt to give more justification to the extension of its so-called project of "Global War on Terrorism" (GWOT), underlining that the group was established to replace al-Qaeda terrorist organization.
"The fiasco of this coalition (anti-ISIL) of countries following the US government, acting once again as a proxy for the Israeli regime, is rooted in the failure to expose the lies and crimes of 9/11. It seems ISIL is being set up to take over the role once assigned to al-Qaeda, whose image was doctored and finessed to provide an all-purpose enemy giving supposed justification for the so-called Global War on Terror," said Professor Hall in an exclusive interview with Fars News Agency.

Elsewhere in the interview, Dr. Hall underscored that the US and its allies are making all-out effort in order to disintegrate Iraq and also overthrow President Bashar al-Assad in order to further expand the territories of the Israeli regime.

Anthony James Hall is Professor of Globalization Studies at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. Professor Hall earned his Ph.D. in History at the University of Toronto. His scholarship and activism began with the study of the encounter between Indigenous peoples and the empires of France, Britain, Spain and Portugal in the Western Hemisphere. This saga of colonial expansionism culminated in the rise of the transcontinental, then hemispheric, and then worldwide empire of the United States which increasingly takes its direction from the Israeli regime, he says. His most recent books are the "American Empire and the Fourth World" as well as "Earth into Property: Colonization, Decolonizaton, and Capitalism".

What follows is the full text of our interview with Professor Anthony James Hall:

Q: The ISIL Takfiri terrorists operating in Iraq and Syria are causing havoc for serving US interests in the Middle East. Many analysts are of the opinion that the ISIL is the product of the US polices in the region. What's your take on that? What objectives are US and its allies pursuing by waging another war in the Middle East?

A: The fiasco of this coalition (anti-ISIL) of countries following the US government, acting once again as a proxy for the Israeli regime, is rooted in the failure to expose the lies and crimes of 9/11. It seems ISIL is being set up to take over the role once assigned to al-Qaeda, whose image was doctored and finessed to provide an all-purpose enemy giving supposed justification for the so-called Global War on Terror.

Near the end of the Cold War the CIA acting through Pakistan built up the mujahadeen in Afghanistan as a mercenary proxy army to overthrow the Soviet-backed puppet regime in Afghanistan. It was the CIA that gave part of this fighting force the name al-Qaeda. Rather than actually investigate what really happened on 9/11, the US government and its extensions in the Zionist-controlled mass media immediately blamed al-Qaeda. The image of al-Qaeda was cultivated to help foment Islamophobia and to provide a replacement enemy after the demise of the Soviet Union. The US military-industrial complex was thus expanded and enriched even as the Israeli regime became the big beneficiary by transforming its regional enemies into the enemies of the so-called West.

The same sort of tactics resulting in the manipulation of a constructed imagery of al-Qaeda to advance the geopolitical agendas of the US government and its Israeli directors is now being re-enacted with this war against the concocted enemy ISIL (DAESH). As was the case with the mujahadeen in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia has a significant role as a sponsor of ISIL.

One part of the agenda in creating ISIL as a concocted caricature of jihadist extremism is to enable the makers and beneficiaries of the Global War on Terror, primarily the Israeli entity and the US-based arms merchants, to update and re-brand the culture of fear and Islamophobia necessary for the continuation of the seemingly never-ending 9/11 Wars.

Another related aspect of the agenda is the goal of breaking up Iraq into smaller units as well as a return to prior efforts to overthrow the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad. Both these scenarios would help realize the geopolitical strategy outlined by the Israeli journalist Oded Yinon who in the 1980s when he devised a divide-and-conquer strategy in the Middle East to best serve the interests of the Jewish entity. This balkanization of the region might be a prelude to the further territorial expansion of the Israeli regime.

Q: The US formed an international coalition in September to battle ISIL terrorists operating in Iraq and Syria through aerial bombardments. The air strikes have so far failed to stop the military gains of the Takfiri group. For what purposes are such attacks being launched? Is the so-called anti-ISIL coalition aimed at toppling the government in Syria?

A: While there was much talk after 9/11 of the need to direct preemptive war at non-state entities in the name of the Global War on Terror, the US government chose instead to invade the nation states of Afghanistan and Iraq in order to impose governments more to their liking. This emerging coalition of national governments lining up to attack an entity which is not a state is, therefore, setting a precedent in the conduct of warfare, a very dangerous and slippery precedent in my view. ISIL is the constructed enemy to provide cover for the enemies of a strong and pluralistic Syria to break up the country and plunge the region more deeply into sectarian and ethnic violence and civil war. If this plan was to succeed, it would lead to the kind of chaotic outcome in Syria and beyond similar to what we are currently witnessing in post-Gaddafi Libya.

Q: The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group has been committing heinous crimes in Iraq and Syria, including mass executions and beheading of men, women and children. Many political commentators maintain that an international fact-finding commission ought to be formed in order to prosecute the ISIL and its backers under international law. What do you think?

A: There are powerful forces aligned against any genuine fact-finding process to explain the background of ISIL. The leadership of the governments lining up to be part of this new chapter in the fraudulent "War on Terror" do not want authoritative studies on who is funding ISIL and who is providing its militants with weapons, training and pay. They do not want authoritative explanations at the UN or elsewhere bringing to light understanding of those agencies, individuals and countries funding ISIL and what they intend to achieve with their backing. This preference for deception and obfuscation on the subject of ISIL extends the project of attempting to keep people in North America and Europe as ignorant as possible about the real causes and purposes of the 9/11 debacle. In the empire of lies, truth is a threat.

ISIS THEATRE: Jihadi John’s Execution of Peter Kassig ‘Emerges’ as Neocons Push For War:
http://21stcenturywire.com/2014/11/18/dark-deception-jihadi-johns-exec ution-of-peter-kassig-emerges-as-neocons-push-for-war/

'Former US Army Ranger, Peter Kassig, has become the fifth alleged victim of ISIS protagonist, “Jihadi John”, in a new, yet very hard to come by ‘beheading’ video…

This is latest attempt in ISIS-branded video propaganda designed to gain public consent in the West – for broader conflict in both Iraq and Syria.

The 26 year-old Peter Kassig, a US Ranger turned aid working and Muslim convert, said to have changed his name to ‘Abdul Rahman’, is now stated to be the third American victim to meet an untimely end at the hands of ISIS militant Jihadi John. Like with the previous high profile beheading videos, the problem is – there is no definitive proof that a murder took place.

It seems that all the mainstream media needs now is a generic statement from a politician to authenticate any ISIS YouTube video, where no forensic investigation is required. The Guardian has gone along with Washington’s media protocol it seems, initially stating:

“A statement from US President Barack Obama on Sunday night confirmed that Kassig had been killed after Isis released the video…”.

Kassig enlisted in the US Army’s well-known special operations 75th Ranger Regiment from June 2006 to September 2007, before being discharged for medical reasons.

On October 3rd, The Washington Post provided additional background info on Kassig: “Kassig also was an employee with TYR Solutions LTD, a British firm that provides security and consulting and training for individuals planning to go to war zones, according to his LinkedIn profile.”

This revelation almost certainly ties him to various intelligence operations, especially given his pedigree and likely high security clearance working as a US Ranger in a war theater.

Since the ISIS ‘beheading’ videos first appeared in August, we’ve seen a string of questionable decapitations, displaying the deaths of American journalist James Foley and Israeli-American, Steven Sotloff, along with the questionable video depicting British ex-soldier David Haines and British aid worker, Alan Henning, all of which are shown to have been killed by ISIS actor, Jihadi John, via crudely constructed propaganda videos, seemingly designed to start a new war at home, and abroad.

Although there continues to be bold and dramatic claims by the US government as to the authenticity of the alleged beheading video’s, we still have yet to see any clear forensic evidence showing an actual beheading at all.

As 21WIRE reported previously, all of the theatrical videos appear to be managed by CIA outcrop organization SITE:

“Of course, as if by magic, CIA and Israeli intelligence-linked media outlet SITE is first on the scene. 21WIRE detailed who and what are behind western terror media outlet SITE (see their logo embossed in the Haines video still below) and why the Sotloff and Foley ‘beheading’ videos appeared to be staged. SITE’s offices are located near the CIA in Virginia.”

Kassig’s death will no doubt ignite neoconservatives within the Republican party, some of whom have been pushing for deeper conflict in Iraq and Syria for sometime. This is marked by the Obama administration rapidly increasing the military presence in Iraq.

When thinking of who could behind that Kassig video, we should consider that the CIA and Israeli intelligence-linked media outlet SITE was the first to release many of these execution videos prior to ISIS on social media. 21WIRE detailed who and what are behind western terror media outlet SITE as evidence suggests all of the ‘beheading’ videos so far appear to be staged.

The timing of Kassig’s execution should be looked at more closely, since it appears to follow the recent political shift within the United States and could mark a more defined direction for future conflict. The ISIS beheading video’s have triggered a wave of hysteria, all based on uploaded YouTube footage by persons unknown and unnamed.

Here is an excerpt from SERA, an apparent humanitarian organization that has provided aid response to conflict areas within Lebanon, Turkey and Syria, which was founded by Peter Kassig:

“SERA (Special Emergency Response and Assistance) is a medically-oriented emergency relief organization that serves refugee populations and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Our efforts, however small, are focused on providing acute logistical support and assistance in areas too difficult for other humanitarian organizations to effectively operate. Typically, this means conflict zones. Our current operational focus is the civil war occurring in Syria. SERA was founded in 2012 by Peter Kassig, a former US Army Ranger who served in the Iraq War.”

There appears to be a common thread binding all of recent ISIS beheading victims and Kassig is no exception. All five of the men said to have been killed by Jihadi John have either had some kind of connection to aid working, some kind of connection to the military or the intelligence field by means of critical Middle East reporting or service.

More details are sure to evolve in this story, follow new details here at 21WIRE.

To date, no Mainstream Media outlets have challenged the authenticity of any of these theatrical ‘beheading’ videos. More from the Daily Mail below…

Damien Gayle
The Daily Mail

A masked jihadist today issued a chilling threat to the West in a video purporting to show the severed head of a U.S. aid worker and a mass murder of Syrian soldiers.

Speaking in the now-familiar London accent of Islamic State executioner-cum-spokesman Jihadi John, the militant issues the bloodcurdling threat in the group’s latest propaganda video.

Later in the same video, which emerged today, it is claimed that another Western hostage, the aid worker and former U.S. army ranger Peter Kassig, has also been executed.

A severed head said to Mr Kassig’s is shown at the end of the near 16-minute long clip, which was uploaded to video sharing sites and publicised via Twitter.

But it is at the beginning of an earlier scene, showing the graphic mass murder of Syrian air force personnel, that the masked militant issues his threat against civilians in the U.S. and UK.

It shows the men led to a place in the desert by bearded, uniformed jihadis who each pick up a knife which they will use to saw the heads off their victims.

As militants stand in a row with their hostages kneeling in front of them, Jihadi John says: ‘To Obama, the dog of Rome. Today we are slaughtering the soldiers of Bashar and tomorrow we will be slaughtering your soldiers.

‘And with Allah’s permission we will break this final and last crusade. And the Islamic State will soon, like your puppet David Cameron said, begin to slaughter your people in your streets.

Naomi Wolf reacts to Isis 'conspiracy theories' critism after she questions whether beheading videos are real

The author suggested that Isis victims and their parents could be actors, and that the videos were 'staged by the US government'

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/naomi-wolf-reacts-to-criticis m-for-isis-conspiracy-theories-after-she-questions-whether-beheading-v ideos-are-real-9778064.html

By JENN SELBY
Monday 06 October 2014
Naomi Wolf stirred controversy over the weekend, after she posted a series of comments on Facebook, in which she questioned the authenticity of the Isis beheading videos and suggested that they "had been staged by the US government".
She went on to query whether Isis (also known as the Islamic State) "victims and their parents were actors", while in a separate, deleted post, she asked a New York Times journalist to verify that the murder of Americans and two Britons had actually happened, political commentary site Vox.com reported.
Furthermore, the best-selling author, who has worked as the former advisor to Al Gore and Bill Clinton in the past, mused that sending American soldiers to west Africa to help stop the spread of Ebola was all a ruse to justify a military takeover of the region.

She wrote: "The US benefits from … us being SO DAMN SCARED so that our intelligence agencies can take away the last of our freedoms on behalf of corporate interests the way intelligence agencies in the West are doing all over ... Britain, Canada, Australia, next NZ ... so there you are."
Her posts were predictably met with some criticism online.
People News In Pictures

Vox.com journalist Max Fisher branded her ideas "wild-eyed conspiracy theories" that could be harmful to an impressionable audience given her "record of respectability".
"It is important for readers who may encounter Wolf's ideas to understand the distinction between her earlier work, which rose on its merits, and her newer conspiracy theories, which are unhinged, damaging and dangerous," he wrote.
"For the record … sigh … internetland, I am not 'calling into question the authenticity of the ISIS videos',"Wolf responded, again on Facebook.
"I don't KNOW if they are authentic or not - no one can - because no one that I am aware of has found a second source for them. I am not making ANY assertions or drawing ANY conclusions.
"I am just … engaging in journalism which requires two independent sources before you can post or publish something as true. I wonder why this bears so much repeating … it used to be something all journalists abided by.”
In a separate, longer post, Wolf further challenged her branding as a conspiracy theorist.
"I see some blogs are badly distorting the nature of what I said ... Why do I often not take political narratives at face value as they are dictated to the press?
"A) Because I am a journalist and verifying skeptically is supposed be our job but more importantly b) because I worked for two Presidential campaigns, one formally and one informally, as a political consultant, and because I was a spouse of a White House speechwriter for many years.
"As a political consultant and also a longtime close-up observer of how news and statements come out of the White House and Presidential campaigns, I know that FIRST the communications team involved has to start with something handed to them that they had nothing to do with ...
"And THEN the creative, talented people in the campaigns' or nation's communications shop are asked to construct a narrative about it and talking points and find 'heroes' that help the narrative along, and the narrative often finally sounds like nothing to do with the actual deal. (In fact best that way.)
"And that uplifting campaign speech or press conference or initiative or photo op often involves finding individuals with great stories to tell that have nothing to do with the deal.
"So all the people who are attacking me right now for 'conspiracy theories' have no idea what they are talking about ... people who assume the dominant narrative MUST BE TRUE and the dominant reasons MUST BE REAL are not experienced in how that world works."
This isn’t the first time Wolf has come under scrutiny for her "creative interpretation of events".
Most memorably, New York Magazine commissioned an article in which they alleged that Wolf was convinced that Edward Snowden and his girlfriend were government plants because the National Security Agency whistleblower was "too well-spoken".

Kobane attackers came from Turkey, claims Turkey's main Kurdish party:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/turkey/11262748/Koban e-attackers-came-from-Turkey-claims-Turkeys-main-Kurdish-party.html

'Four Islamic State militants blew themselves up in Kobane, one detonating a car bomb at the Mursitpinar border crossing, having apparently come into the besieged city from Turkey:

'
Turkey's main Kurdish party accused the government of turning a blind eye to Islamic State militants on its soil on Saturday after suicide bombers attacked the Syrian border town of Kobane, one of them using a car that had apparently come from Turkey.

Four Islamic State militants blew themselves up in Kobane, one detonating a car bomb at the Mursitpinar border crossing. At least 30 people were killed in clashes across the town, a monitoring group and local officials said.

Kurdish militia have been holding off Islamic State fighters for more than two months in the town, known as Ayn al-Arab in Arabic. Neither side has gained a decisive advantage despite U.S.-led air strikes meant to push back the Islamist insurgents.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the vehicle used in the dawn car bombing had come from Turkish territory. A second bomber detonated an explosive vest in the same area, before two more suicide attacks hit the southwestern edge of the town, it said.

Idris Nassan, a Kurdish official in Kobane, said Islamic State snipers were hiding among grain depots on the Turkish side of the border and firing on the town.

Turkey's pro-Kurdish HDP also said the militants were using state grain storage facilities as a base and described their presence in an area patrolled by Turkish security forces as a "scandal".

"As we have been pointing out for months, this once more proves that Islamic State is being supported (from within Turkey)," the HDP said in a statement.

Turkey has vehemently denied supporting the jihadists, saying they are also a threat to its own national security.

A Turkish official had no immediate information on the attacks and Reuters could obtain no independent confirmation of the HDP's accusation that Islamic State fighters were firing from Turkish soil.

Ankara has refused to take a frontline role in US-led action against Islamic State, fearing it could strengthen Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces or Kurdish militias, both of which it sees as a threat.

The stance has infuriated Turkey's Kurds, prompting violent protests in October in which around 40 people were killed.

The Observatory said clashes broke out across Kobane on Saturday. It said Islamic State fighters fired at least 110 shells and were bringing in tanks. Two air strikes had targeted Islamic State positions to the east, it said.

At least 30 fighters were killed, said Rami Abdulrahman, the Observatory's director. Twenty-one were Islamic State fighters, including the four bombers. The rest were Kurdish forces.'
