The U.S. armed forces are taking steps to ensure that air defenses around the U.S. capital remain at peak readiness.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, announced Monday that its Continental United States NORAD Region, or CONR, will carry out an alert exercise comprised of training flights called Exercise Falcon Virgo 07-07 late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning in the National Capital Region of Washington, D.C.

"This exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, Cheyenne Mountain Directorate, CONUS NORAD Region (CONR), Eastern Air Defense Sector, Western Air Defense Sector, Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard Rotary Wing Air Intercept," NORAD said in a statement.

"Exercise Falcon Virgo 07-07 is designed to test NORAD's intercept and identification operations," NORAD said. "Civil Air Patrol aircraft, U.S. Air Force, F-16's, C-38 and U.S. Coast Guard HH-65 helicopters, will participate in the exercise."

"Residents in the area can expect flights to occur during the late night and early morning hours," the command said.

NORAD said the exercise was intended "to ensure NORAD's rapid response capability."

"NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command's response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001," it said.

The NORAD statement gave no indication as to why the exercise was being held at this time. But it comes at a time when the Pentagon has said the aircraft carrier USS John Stennis was deployed away from the northern Indian Ocean off Iran to carry out air support operations for NATO ground forces in Afghanistan.
