Sky News has pictures and reports of an apartment block collapsing in Palencia, Northern Spain, early on Tuesday morning 1.5.2007, killing 7 people.

This report from South Africa:

Quote:
Palencia - At least five people were killed on Tuesday when a five-storey residential dwelling collapsed after a gas explosion in the northern Spanish city of Palencia, reports said.

Around 20 residents were injured in the accident in the city centre. Six of them, including two small children, were recovered from the site by rescuers.

Rescue teams did not rule out that more victims might still be buried under the rubble. But rescue work had to be postponed as one of the neighbouring buildings was also in danger of collapsing. The body of one victim had been discovered there.

Authorities said a gas explosion in the cellar of a neighbouring building had caused the accident.

The detonation was so severe that it ripped out supporting walls and damaged several buildings in a 200-metre radius and forced their evacuation.

A resident, who managed to escape from the collapsing building, told Spanish radio: "It was like an earthquake. The whole house was shaking. Doors and windows flew off their hinges. As soon as we were outside the building collapsed behind us.".

After the explosion, a fire broke out in the ruins, making it more difficult for rescuers to bring the injured to safety. The collapsed building, located in the heart of Palencia's old town near the cathedral, was 34 years old.

Palencia is the provincial capital and has 83 000 inhabitants. - Sapa-DPA
