I have for many years been reading Vieira's writings and hold his work in
high regard. He is a fine constitutional scholar and monetary historian.
However, his proposed solution is wide of the mark.

While I agree fully that we need to have an objective measure of value based
on some physical commodity or commodities, I take issue with his insistence
upon a return to complete reliance upon commodity money. That position flies
in the face of the historical evolution of money and the need for a flexible

CREDIT is the substance of money (exchange media) and its use needs to be
perfected not abandoned. Let us not throw out the baby with the bath water.
The basic problem today is the abuse of credit by governments, central
banks, and the banking cartel. Their collusive arrangement, supported by
legal tender laws and banking legislation, allows central governments to
spend virtually without limit and for banks to exploit their customers with
usurious charges and fees.
The prospects of changing that situation through political action are
essentially nil.

We are all complicit in our own exploitation by trusting government, banks,
and official currencies. We, in effect, give our credit to the banks then
borrow it back from them.

What does have a chance of working is the issuance of complementary private
currencies based on the supplies of available goods and services, and the
development voluntary, direct credit clearing arrangements that enable
people to use and allocate their own credit.
Who or what do you trust? Who is deserving of credit?

Do not confuse direct credit clearing with primitive "barter." Credit
clearing is a sophisticated matching of debits and credits that offset
purchases against sales -- goods and services pay for other goods and
services, money is just an intermediary device to facilitate that process.
These kinds of arrangements are being organized on an ever increasing scale.
This is the path to liberation of peoples and nations.
