Lawyers for Mohamed Al Fayed today tried to embroil the Queen in the Diana, Princess of Wales, inquest.

They called for the monarch to be "directly approached" over an infamous conversation she allegedly had with the former royal butler, Paul Burrell, in which she warned him of unknown "powers" at work in this country.

Mr Burrell, who previously worked for the princess, made the claim after the collapse of his Old Bailey trial for theft.

Michael Mansfield QC, representing Mr Fayed at a preliminary hearing for the inquest at the high court in London said references to what the Queen is alleged to have said were edited out of the police documents for the inquest.

Lady Butler-Sloss, the outgoing coroner in the case, said the documents were edited at her request. She also claimed it would be unprecedented for the Queen to be approached about the remarks.

She said: "I have redacted the conversations of what Her Majesty is supposed to have said. In as far as you're saying that Her Majesty should be directly approached, I think that's unheard of."

Mr Fayed claims Diana was pregnant with his son Dodi's child and they were murdered in an establishment and secret service plot masterminded by the Duke of Edinburgh.

He has already called for Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales to give evidence at the inquest.

Mr Al Fayed's team also want access to a letter written by Diana, seen by Mr Burrell, in which the princess apparently claimed the Prince of Wales was planning an accident in her car.

Lady Butler-Sloss said in court today that she had made requests for the original but had had no luck in obtaining it.

Bad-tempered exchanges between Lady Butler Sloss and Mr Mansfield marked the opening stages of the preliminary hearing.

In the first hour, Lady Butler-Sloss accused Mr Mansfield of putting her "in the dock" and not trusting her.

The QC vigorously denied that he was attempting to "dictate" to the coroner and said he was only performing his legitimate role of "making submissions".

Lady Butler-Sloss, the deputy coroner to the Queen's household and Britain's former top woman judge, announced last month that she is stepping down from the case in June. In an unusually candid statement she said she lacked experience of dealing with jury cases with this level of public interest.

She clashed with Mr Mansfield on a number of issues, including where the eventual full inquest should be held.

Mr Mansfield said the proposed venue - Court 73 at the royal courts of justice - was "totally inadequate". He also complained about the "late" production of documents.

Lady Butler Sloss is being replaced by one of Britain's most senior judges, Lord Justice Scott Baker.

perhaps it was the QC, as in Queens council that gave the game away?

As far as i understand things, according to the treason and felony act, the Queen is accountable to nobody? she has absoloute power? no one can bring the old gal to account on anything? Perhaps Mr shayler can shed some light on this aspect of the UK power base?

Expect the excuse ''we thought the documents were of no importance, so we shredded them, and we dont have any records?''.
