Zionists demand Olmert resignation

At least 100,000 Zionists rallied in Tel Aviv after sunset Thursday, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert because of a harsh report criticizing his management of last summer's Lebanon attack.

"Resign!" demanded a huge white banner spanned across the city's central Rabin square "Olmert go home" and "Elections now" said other signs.

"If you don't go Olmert, we will force you out," said a reserve soldier who led a group of reservists that protested outside Olmert's office in the days after the attack and whose actions helped pressure the Premier to establish the commission of inquiry that published Monday's interim report.

Despite its strong criticism, a defiant Olmert has thus far vowed to stay in office and personally ensure implementation of the attack lessons.

"This government made the decisions and this government will correct the faults," he said hours after its publication.

But the protesters in Tel Aviv demanding his rsignation represented a majority of the Zionists' public.

According to opinion polls published by the Zionists' leading dailies and television channels, at least 70 percent of Zionists want to see Olmert go.
