BBC makes apology over vote-rigging in contest

The BBC has apologised to thousands of disappointed schoolchildren who took part in its competition to find a choir to sing on the West End stage after finding evidence that the competition was rigged.
The broadcaster has abandoned a voting system designed to choose the nation’s favourite choir and will instead hand over the decision to a panel of experts.
The public were invited to audition choirs on the website for Any Dream Will Do, a reality television show that will cast the leading role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat, but the system was beset by technical difficulties and devious tactics. The BBC acknowledged that “evidence of block voting” had damaged trust in the results. “We have decided on this occasion to set aside the online rating results and rely instead on a panel, in the interests of fairness.”
The website was unable to cope with the public response and was also designed so that children could improve their position in the chart by voting down their closest rivals.
A panel will select a shortlist of 20 choirs, which will then be whittled down to one by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The winning choir will perform live on BBC One during the final show of Any Dream Will Do and will be invited to appear in the West End for a charity performance.
