Bush Authorizes New Covert Action Against Iran
'The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert "black" operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell ABCNews.com. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a "nonlethal presidential finding" that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran's currency and international financial transactions.'
"I can't confirm or deny whether such a program exists or whether the president signed it, but it would be consistent with an overall American approach trying to find ways to put pressure on the regime," said Bruce Riedel, a recently retired CIA senior official who dealt with Iran and other countries in the region.
A National Security Council spokesperson, Gordon Johndroe, said, "The White House does not comment on intelligence matters." A CIA spokesperson said, "As a matter of course, we do not comment on allegations of covert activity."
The sources say the CIA developed the covert plan over the last year and received approval from White House officials and other officials in the intelligence community.
Officials say the covert plan is designed to pressure Iran to stop its nuclear enrichment program and end aid to insurgents in Iraq.
"There are some channels where the United States government may want to do things without its hand showing, and legally, therefore, the administration would, if it's doing that, need an intelligence finding and would need to tell the Congress," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, a former White House counterterrorism official.
Current and former intelligence officials say the approval of the covert action means the Bush administration, for the time being, has decided not to pursue a military option against Iran.
Vice President Cheney helped to lead the side favoring a military strike," said former CIA official Riedel, "but I think they have come to the conclusion that a military strike has more downsides than upsides."
The covert action plan comes as U.S. officials have confirmed Iran had dramatically increased its ability to produce nuclear weapons material, at a pace that experts said would give them the ability to build a nuclear bomb in two years.
Riedel says economic pressure on Iran may be the most effective tool available to the CIA, particularly in going after secret accounts used to fund the nuclear program.
"The kind of dealings that the Iranian Revolution Guards are going to do, in terms of purchasing nuclear and missile components, are likely to be extremely secret, and you're going to have to work very, very hard to find them, and that's exactly the kind of thing the CIA's nonproliferation center and others would be expert at trying to look into," Riedel said.
Under the law, the CIA needs an official presidential finding to carry out such covert actions. The CIA is permitted to mount covert "collection" operations without a presidential finding.
"Presidential findings" are kept secret but reported to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and other key congressional leaders.
The "nonlethal" aspect of the presidential finding means CIA officers may not use deadly force in carrying out the secret operations against Iran.
Still, some fear that even a nonlethal covert CIA program carries great risks.
"I think everybody in the region knows that there is a proxy war already afoot with the United States supporting anti-Iranian elements in the region as well as opposition groups within Iran," said Vali Nasr, adjunct senior fellow for Mideast studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.
"And this covert action is now being escalated by the new U.S. directive, and that can very quickly lead to Iranian retaliation and a cycle of escalation can follow," Nasr said.
Other "lethal" findings have authorized CIA covert actions against al Qaeda, terrorism and nuclear proliferation.
Also briefed on the CIA proposal, according to intelligence sources, were National Security Advisor Steve Hadley and Deputy National Security Advisor Elliott Abrams.
"The entire plan has been blessed by Abrams, in particular," said one intelligence source familiar with the plan. "And Hadley had to put his chop on it."
Abrams' last involvement with attempting to destabilize a foreign government led to criminal charges.
He pleaded guilty in October 1991 to two misdemeanor counts of withholding information from Congress about the Reagan administration's ill-fated efforts to destabilize the Nicaraguan Sandinista government in Central America, known as the Iran-Contra affair. Abrams was later pardoned by President George H. W. Bush in December 1992.
In June 2001, Abrams was named by then National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice to head the National Security Council's office for democracy, human rights and international operations. On Feb. 2, 2005, National Security Advisor Hadley appointed Abrams deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor for global democracy strategy, one of the nation's most senior national security positions.
As earlier reported on the Blotter on ABCNews.com, the United States has supported and encouraged an Iranian militant group, Jundullah, that has conducted deadly raids inside Iran from bases on the rugged Iran-Pakistan-Afghanistan "tri-border region."
U.S. officials deny any "direct funding" of Jundullah groups but say the leader of Jundullah was in regular contact with U.S. officials.
American intelligence sources say Jundullah has received money and weapons through the Afghanistan and Pakistan military and Pakistan's intelligence service. Pakistan has officially denied any connection.
A report broadcast on Iranian TV last Sunday said Iranian authorities had captured 10 men crossing the border with $500,000 in cash along with "maps of sensitive areas" and "modern spy equipment."
A senior Pakistani official told ABCNews.com the 10 men were members of Jundullah.
The leader of the Jundullah group, according to the Pakistani official, has been recruiting and training "hundreds of men" for "unspecified missions" across the border in Iran.

Recent revelations illustrating the fact that the U.S. government is using a Sunni Al-Qaeda terrorist group formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11 to carry out bombings in Iran undermines the entire war on terror as a monumental hoax that is being exploited purely to realize a geopolitical agenda.
"President George W Bush has given the CIA approval to launch covert "black" operations to achieve regime change in Iran, intelligence sources have revealed. Mr Bush has signed an official document endorsing CIA plans for a propaganda and disinformation campaign intended to destabilise, and eventually topple, the theocratic rule of the mullahs."
"The CIA is giving arms-length support, supplying money and weapons, to an Iranian militant group, Jundullah, which has conducted raids into Iran from bases in Pakistan," the London Telegraph reported yesterday.
Jundullah is a Sunni Al-Qaeda offshoot organization that was formerly headed by alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Even if you believe the official story of 9/11 to the letter, the fact that Bush has personally authorized U.S. support for this group completely dismantles the facade of the war on terror.
The group has been blamed for a number of bombings inside Iran aimed at destabilizing Ahmadinejad's government and is also active in Pakistan, having been fingered for its involvement in attacks on police stations and car bombings at the Pakistan-US Cultural Center in 2004.
The U.S. government is arming and directing a Sunni Al-Qaeda group to carry out bombings in Iran and yet Bush has the temerity to grandstand during his Rose Garden speech last week and wave the Al-Qaeda bogeyman to strike the fear of God into American citizens.
"As to al Qaeda in Iraq, al Qaeda is going to fight us wherever we are. That's their strategy. Their strategy is to drive us out of the Middle East. They have made it abundantly clear what they want. They want to establish a caliphate. They want to spread their ideology. They want safe haven from which to launch attacks. They're willing to kill the innocent to achieve their objectives, and they will fight us. And the fundamental question is, will we fight them? I have made the decision to do so. I believe that the best way to protect us in this war on terror is to fight them," Bush said on Thursday.
Bush's definition of fighting Al-Qaeda is apparently to lend them all the funds, weapons and tactical know how they need to carry out attacks against innocent civilians in Iran, and let us not forget that America's allies the British have also been caught training insurgents in Iraq to carry out hi-tech bombings that are later blamed on Iran - just as the SAS worked with U.S. special forces to train the KLA in Kosovo, which was also an Al-Qaeda chapter having been financed directly by Bin Laden himself.
But in the world of newspeak and the lowest common denominator propaganda that cloaks the real agenda of the "war on terror", anyone who rises up against occupation, be it a kid who throws a rock in Baghdad or a car bombing on behalf of an increasingly Shiite-led insurgency, the natural enemies of the Sunni "Al-Qaeda," are terrorists and are Al-Qaeda members.
A cruel irony exists whereby anyone and everyone who opposes military occupation is smeared as an Al-Qaeda terrorist and yet the only real Al-Qaeda terrorists are being bankrolled, armed and directed by the CIA itself, with Bush's explicit approval.
Since President Bush didn't know the difference between Sunni & Shiite Muslims until two months before the invasion of Iraq and the incoming chairman of a congressional intelligence committee said Al Qaeda prominently came from the Shia branch of Islam, we can't hold out much hope for Joe Public and this is why the simplest propaganda is always the most effective.
They're the bad guys, we're the good guys - black and white with no shades of gray.
In reality, Al-Qaeda only exists within intelligence circles coordinated by the highest echelons of the U.S. government, and is being used yet again as a tool for destabilization in nations targeted for regime change by the Neo-Cons.
Jundullah is not the only anti-Iranian terror group that US government has been accused of funding in an attempt to pressure the Iranian government.
Multiple credible individuals including US intelligence whistleblowers and former military personnel have asserted that the government is conducting covert military operations inside Iran using guerilla groups to carry out attacks on Iranian Revolution Guard units.
It is widely suspected that the well known right-wing terrorist organization known as Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK), once run by Saddam Hussein's dreaded intelligence services, is now working exclusively for the CIA's Directorate of Operations and carrying out remote bombings in Iran of the sort that the Bush administration condemns on a daily basis inside Iraq.
After a bombing inside Iran in March, the London Telegraph also reported on how a high ranking CIA official has blown the whistle on the fact that America is secretly funding terrorist groups in Iran in an attempt to pile pressure on the Islamic regime to give up its nuclear program.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but the government has previously accused the Sunni militant group Jundallah (Soldiers of God) of launching regular attacks on Shi'ite targets in the province.
In May, the group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a Shi'ite mosque that killed 25 people in Zahedan, which has witnessed some of Jundallah's worst attacks
Thirteen members of the group were convicted in the attack and hanged in July.
Jundallah has waged a low-level insurgency over the past few years, accusing the mostly Shi'ite government of persecution.

This event seems to be extremely worrying and points to an immanent attack on Iran. Like the assasination of Afghan leaders in the run up to 9/11? .... these Revolutionary Guard commanders would be key to any resistance against the US led bombing/invasion of Iran? Now the US dollar is under huge pressure and will collapse in the near future ... the American Empire makes its last desperate throw of the dice? The Iranians have already blamed the UK for these assasinations. As the US imperial adventure in Pak/Afghan collapses into failure .... what else can they do except start a war with Iran?

If I were Amedinajad, apart from not being so ridiculously anti-semitic and less brutal with real or supposed enemies of his regime, I would be cementing ties with China and Russia (despite their horrific human rights and expansionist record; I believe he is doing that already), and stocking up on RPG's and SAM's; Afghan Resistance forces would just love lots of these, and if the US (or even proxy Israeli) attacks ensue, spread them about.
Russia was beaten by US-supplied SAM's; the 'Coalition' forces of occupation (including Britain) rely on massive air power, against virtually no Resistance air defenses. Air defenses would seriously affect 'Coalition' forces ability to operate, and to kill thousands of Afghan civilians and Resistance forces.
Remember, the Nazis would have labeled the French Maquis as 'terrorists'.

Totally agree. The term 'suicide bomber' will now for ever more signify an assassination. How can western TV networks ever know whether a bomb was planted on someone and detonated remotely or even a missile?

'Israel may attack Iran after December'

Israel is making preparations to carry out military attacks in Iran after December, a French magazine reported overnight Wednesday.

According to the report in Le Canard Enchainé quoted by Israel Radio, Jerusalem has already ordered high-quality combat rations from a French food manufacturer for soldiers serving in elite units and has also asked reservists of these units staying abroad to return to Israel.
The magazine further reported that in a recent visit to France, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi told his French counterpart Jean-Louis Georgelin that Israel was not planning to bomb Iran, but might send elite troops to conduct activities on the ground there.
These, according to the magazine, could involve the sabotage of nuclear facilities as well as assassinations of top Iranian nuclear scientists.
Israel has recently toned down rhetoric against Iran so as not to hinder US diplomatic efforts for Iranian transparency regarding its nuclear program, but neither Jerusalem nor Washington have so far made any unequivocal statements to the effect that the military option against Iran was no longer being considered.
Israel has maintained that it has the military capability to tackle Iran on its own if sanctions against the Islamic Republic prove ineffective.
Israel accuses Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. Teheran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful.

Pakistan-based terrorist group Jundullah has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack that rocked a unity gathering between Sunni and Shia tribal leaders in the borderline Pishin region, near the city of Sarbaz.
At least 30 people, including top regional security officials such as provincial commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) including Brigadier Nour-Ali Shoushtari and Brigadier Rajab-Ali Mohammadzadeh, were also killed in the explosion.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry further called on Pakistan to 'deal firmly' with terrorists active on Pakistani soil.
The Pakistani official assured Tehran that his country would take all measures to secure its borders with Iran.
In the past, Tehran has accused Islamabad of hosting members of the terrorist group Jundullah near Pakistan's western borders.

....It's possible that Jundallah members can move freely over the many smuggling routes linking the three nations.
Many experts estimate there are no more than 1,000 hard-core Jundallah fighters. Some reports speculate that the group is involved in smuggling low-cost subsidized fuel in Iran into Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Medvedev pledges Russian help in wake of Iran's terror strike

Moscow, European Union send condolences to Tehran after a suicide blast kills dozens, including five senior members of the Revolutionary Guard.
Iran has begun three days of mourning following a deadly suicide attack in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan that killed at least 42 and wounded 30 others, state-run Press TV reported.
The attack threatens to throw the volatile Pishin district near the Pakistani border into sectarian strife, as well as disrupt ongoing talks in Vienna between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iranian officials.
Negotiators hope the talks will produce an agreement to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, a resource the Islamic Republic says it needs for its domestic energy program. Other countries, including most notably the United States and Israel, suspect Iran of attempting to create nuclear weapons.
At 8 a.m. Sunday, the suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt pack just as representatives of the Guards were entering a sports complex for a meeting with tribal leaders to discuss Sunni-Shiite cooperation in a region plagued with tribal infighting, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking from Afghanistan.
Iranian authorities confirmed that among the dead were five senior officers of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, including General Noor Ali Shooshtari, deputy commander of the Guard’s ground forces, and Rajab Ali Mohammadzadeh, a provincial Guard commander.
Iran points finger… everywhere
Speaking at an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad directed his ire at his Pakistani counterpart, President Asif Ali Zardari, arguing the “main elements” of the attack escaped into bordering Pakistan and “they should hand those perpetrators over to us.”
“I ask the Pakistani government not to delay handing the main elements of this crime to us anymore,” Ahmadinejad said. “The perpetrators that have gone to Pakistan and we are aware that unfortunately some Pakistani agents cooperate with them.”
According to a statement from the president’s office, Zardari telephoned Ahmadinejad to condemn the attacks, which the Pakistani president described as “gruesome and barbaric” and bore the prints of a “cowardly enemy on the run.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (formally known as the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution) is an elite corps of 120,000 troops founded after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, a mass event that was responsible for overthrowing Iran’s monarchy Under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
The Guards is a combined military structure with its own ground forces, navy, air force, intelligence unit and special forces.
They are also responsible for patrolling Iran’s borders.
The chief prosecutor in Sistan-Baluchestan, Mohammad Morziah, said that Jundullah, or Soldiers of God, a Sunni militant group, had claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack.
In May, Jundullah claimed responsibility for an explosion that hit a Shiite mosque in the southeastern city of Zahedan, killing 25 worshippers.
At the same time, General Mohammad Ali Jafari of the Guards blamed US, British and Pakistani intelligence services for the attack.
“New evidence has been obtained proving the link between yesterday’s terrorist attack and
the US, British and Pakistani intelligence services,” state-run Press TV quoted Jafari as saying.
A leading Iranian politician supported the accusation.
“We consider this recent terrorist act,” said Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani, “to be the result of U.S. actions and this is a sign of their enmity.”
A U.S. State Department spokesman said the accusation was “completely false.”
“We condemn this act of terrorism and mourn the loss of innocent lives,” Ian Kelly told CNN. “Reports of alleged U.S. involvement are completely false.”
Russia responds
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has extended his condolences to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Russia’s presidential press service reported on Monday.
“I was outraged to learn about the terrorist acts committed near the city of Zahedan, which killed dozens of Iranian military men and civilians. I condemn this act of extremism and am confident that its organizers and perpetrators will be found and punished,” Medvedev said in his statement to the Iranian leader.
The Russian president then declared his willingness to cooperate with Iran on fighting terrorism.
“We believe that the fight against extremist threats, no matter where they come from, requires all countries to unite their efforts,” Medvedev’s statement reads. “We are ready to work together with the Islamic Republic of Iran to combat these threats.”
Medvedev’s declaration of support will probably draw more than one raised eyebrow in the West, especially the United States, where Iran has been declared a de facto terrorist state. U.S. President Barack Obama, however, using a radically different tact from his predecessor, George W. Bush, has declared his willingness to “sit down and talk” with Ahmadinejad.
Russia, which has more on-the-ground experience in Iran than many other countries have, has taken a much more cool-headed approach to dealing with Ahmadinejad and his occasional rants.
In early September, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned against military action targeting Iran or imposing new sanctions to halt its nuclear program.
Putin said any attack on Iran would be “very dangerous, unacceptable” and would lead to “an explosion of terrorism.”
Although Washington has taken a more diplomatic approach to handling Iran, its staunch ally, Israel, remains committed to its words that “all the options are on the table,” including a military response, if “crippling sanctions” are not imposed on the Islamic country.
Bad timing
Of course there is never a good time for a terrorist attack to occur, but Sunday’s outrage in southeastern Iran was such bad timing that it actually opens the door wide to any number of potential suspects.
First, it seems very strange that Jundullah, a militant group that “fights for the rights of Sunnis in Iran,” would seek to sabotage a meeting between Shiite, Sunni and the Revolutionary Guards that had every possibility of advancing the rights of the Sunnis in the region.
Such a barbaric attack will do nothing positive for Sunnis in the region, except to throw them into possible sectarian violence and deeper poverty – a desperate situation similar to what plagued Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003 when the Ba’ath was purged from power and sectarian strife suddenly ran rampant across the country.
Second, it also suggests “foul play” that the attack would occur just as Iran had agreed to sit down and discuss its nuclear program with the global community. Now hopes for Monday’s meeting in Vienna between Iran, the IAEA and European diplomats will be thrown into a cloud of distrust, doubt and possible despair, a scenario that may sit well with those nations that have expressed little hope for dialogue with the Iranian regime.
Finally, Ahmadinejad’s hold on power has been greatly weakened in the wake of June’s presidential elections, which saw thousands of Iranians taking to the streets to demonstrate their outrage over what they believed to be a rigged voting process. The last thing Ahmadinejad needs now is more pressure from inside his country.
And if the Revolutionary Guard ever loses faith in Ahmadinejad’s leadership – and by extension, the faith of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khameini, who ranks as the highest political and religious figure in the Islamic nation – then things could turn very badly for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad very quickly.

Iran's security officers grounded the plane carrying the ringleader of Jundullah terrorist group Abdolmalek Rigi in one of Iran's southern ports, informed sources say.
As initial reports indicated that Iran's most wanted man was captured on a flight en-route to Kyrgyzstan from Dubai, a source talking to Press TV on condition of anonymity confirmed that Rigi and one of his deputies were captured after their plane was brought down by security forces in an airport in the Iranian Persian Gulf city of Bandar Abbas.

Jundullah, which has operated in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan and Pakistan's Baluchistan provinces, has carried out a number of attacks against high profile Iranian targets, especially the government and security officials.
Jundallah is responsible for several terrorist attacks inside Iran. In October, the group claimed responsibility for a bombing that left over 40 people dead in Iran's southeast.
Jundallah was also behind a blast at a mosque in Zahedan that killed over 20 people in May 2009.
Rigi's brother Abdolhamid is also in Iran's custody. He has admitted that Jundallah receives orders from the US to carryout attacks in Iran.
An ABC News report in 2007 reported that the Jundullah terrorist group 'has been secretly encouraged and advised by American officials' to destabilize the government in Iran.
In another report in July, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh revealed that US Congressional leaders secretly agreed to George W. Bush's $400-million funding request last year for a major escalation of covert operations against Iran.
Observers say that it is through such covert funding that the US arms and finances anti-Iran terrorist groups such as the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) and Jundullah.
Other US intelligence agencies, such as the CIA, have their own secret and separate budgets to fund terrorist and insurgency operations against Iran and other nations that do not submit to America's will.
The group's ringleader, Abdolmalek Rigi, has described his terrorist cell as a 'nationalist movement' and denied any links to Washington. However, many Sunni Baluchis were among the victims of the most recent terrorist attack by Rigi's followers.

Death toll for Jundullah's Iran mosque bombing rises to 27

TEHRAN, Iran — A Sunni insurgent group said it carried out a double suicide bombing against a Shiite mosque in southeast Iran to avenge the execution of its leader, as Iranian authorities Friday said the death toll rose to 27 people, including members of the elite Revolutionary Guard.
The blast was the latest by the group Jundallah, which has repeatedly succeeded in carrying out deadly strikes on the Guard, the country's most powerful military force — including an October suicide bombing that killed more than 40 people. It was a sign that the group is still able to carry out devastating attacks even after Iran hanged its leader Abdulmalik Rigi and his brother earlier this year.
Shiite worshippers were attending ceremonies marking the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein, when the first blast went off outside the mosque in the provincial capital Zahedan. As people rushed to help, the second explosion detonated. The technique is often used by Sunni militants in Iraq to maximize casualties.
Members of the Guard were among the worshippers, particularly because the ceremonies coincided with Iran's official Revolutionary Guard Day. The deputy interior minister, Ali Abdollahi, told the Fars news agency Thursday that several Guard members were among the dead.
Health Minister Marzieh Vahid Dastagerdi told the semiofficial ISNA news agency that the toll stood at 27 dead but could still rise, with another 270 injured, including 11 in serious condition.
Iran accuses the United States and Britain of supporting Jundallah in a plot to weaken Tehran clerical leadership, a claim both countries deny. On Friday, officials blamed them for the latest attack.
Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Revolutionary Guard, told worshippers during Tehran Friday prayers that the victims "were martyred by hands of mercenaries of the U.S. and U.K."
He was echoed by influential lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi who said "America should be answerable for the terrorist incident in Zahedan."
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the bombing in the "strongest possible terms" and called for those responsible to be held accountable. [yes Hillary - that's you me dear - ed]
Jundallah has been waging an insurgency for years in the remote Sistan-Baluchistan province, a lawless area where smuggling and banditry are rife. The groups says it is fighting for the rights of the mainly Sunni ethnic Baluchi minority, which it says suffers discrimination at the hands of Iran's Shiite's leadership. Iran has accused the group of links to al-Qaida, but experts say no evidence of such a link has been found.
Iran executed Jundallah's leader in June in Zahedan, a month after hanging his brother Abdulhamid Rigi, who had been captured in Pakistan in 2008 and extradited to Iran. The group named a new leader, al-Hajj Mohammed Dhahir Baluch.
In a statement posted on its Web site, Jundallah claimed responsibility for Thursday night's blast, saying they were to avenge Abdulmalik Rigi's death. It showed pictures of two suicide bombers wearing explosive vests, identified as Mohammad and Mujahid Rigi, apparently members of the leader's clan, though the site did not specify their relationship to him.
The group said its "sons of the faith ... carried out tonight a heroic unprecedented operation at the heart of an assembly of the Guard at Zahedan," claiming to have killed more than 100.
Jundallah has repeatedly targeted the Revolutionary Guards. In its deadliest attack, a suicide bomber hit a meeting between Guard commanders and Shiite and Sunni tribal leaders in the border town of killed Pishin on Oct. 18, killing 42 people, including 15 Guard members.
July 13, 2010 "Morning Star" -- Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro warned on Monday that a US-Israeli attack on Iran is "imminent" and predicted that this could trigger a global nuclear war.
In a special appearance on state-run television for the first time in nearly a year, the Communist leader described US and Israeli sabre-rattling over Iran's civil nuclear energy programme as "the most serious crisis" on the international scene because "the Iranian government will not retreat."
"The Iranians have been preparing themselves for 30 years, and have acquired all the Russian and Chinese aeroplanes and weapons necessary for their defence," Mr Castro said.
"They are training all people between the ages of 12 and 60 - just the Guardians of the Revolution have a million members," he added.
And Mr Castro insisted that the US sank the South Korean Cheonan warship in order to justify an attack on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
He said that "in the face of a massive attack against Iran, North Korea will not wait to be attacked, and a nuclear war will also break out in that zone.
"When they decide to attack Iran, one war after the other will be unleashed," he declared.
The veteran Communist spoke out at a delicate time politically for Cuba, as it begins releasing 52 prisoners under a landmark deal brokered with Spanish officials and the Catholic church last week.
The men were all arrested in a crackdown on US-backed subversion in 2003.

I affirmed on July 4 that neither the United States nor Iran would give in; "one, due to the pride of the powerful, and the other, out of resistance to the yoke and the capacity to fight, as has occurred so many times in the history of humanity..."
In almost all wars, one of the parties wishes to avoid them, and sometimes, both. On this occasion, it would come about even though one of the parties does not wish it, as happened in the two World Wars in 1914 and 1939, with only 25 years of distance before the first outbreak and the second.
The slaughters were horrific, they would not have been unleashed without prior errors of calculation. The two parties were defending imperialist interests and they believed that they would obtain their objectives without the terrible cost that that implied.
In the case that concerns us: one of them is defending national, absolutely just interests. The other is pursuing illegitimate intentions and crude material interests.
If we analyze all the wars that have taken place, starting from the known history of our species, one of the parties has sought those objectives.
Any illusion that, on this occasion, such objectives will be reached without the most terrible of all wars is absolutely vain.
In one of the best articles published by the Global Research website on Thursday, July 1, signed by Rick Rozoff, he provides abundant indisputable arguments on the United States intentions, of which any well-informed person must be aware.
"... Victory can be attained when an adversary knows it is vulnerable to an instantaneous and undetectable, overwhelming and devastating attack without the ability to defend itself or retaliate," is what the United States thinks, according to the author.
"... A country which aspires to remain the only state in history to wield full spectrum military dominance on land, in the air, on the seas and in space."
"... To maintain and extend military bases and troops, aircraft carrier battle groups and strategic bombers on and to most every latitude and longitude. To do so with a post-World War II record war budget of $708 billion for next year."

Rozoff lists the many press conferences, meetings and statements of Joint Chiefs of Staff and high-ranking members of the government of the United States in the last few months.
He explains the commitments to NATO and the reinforced cooperation with Near East allies, primarily, read Israel. He says, "The U.S. is also intensifying space and cyber warfare programs with the potential to completely shut down other nations' military surveillance and command, control, communications, computer and intelligence systems, rendering them defenseless on any but the most basic tactical level."
He speaks of the signing in Prague, on April 8 of this year, of the new START Treaty between Russia and the United States, which "does not contain any constraints on current or planned U.S. conventional prompt global strike capability."
He refers to countless news items on the subject and illustrates the intentions of the United States with one overwhelming example.
He notes that "... 'The Department of Defense is currently exploring the full range of technologies and systems for a Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS) capability that could provide the President more credible and technically suitable options for dealing with new and evolving threats."
I maintain the opinion that any president whosoever, not even the most expert military chief, would not have one minute to know what should be done if it was not already programmed on computers.
Imperturbably, Rozoff relates what the Global Security Network affirms in an analysis titled: "'Cost to test U.S. global-strike missile could reach $500 million,'" by Elaine Grossman.
"'The Obama administration has requested $239.9 million for prompt global strike research and development across the military services in fiscal 2011... If funding levels remain as anticipated into the coming years, the Pentagon will have spent some $2 billion on prompt global strike by the end of fiscal 2015, according to budget documents submitted last month to Capitol Hill.'"
"A terrifying scenario comparable to the effects of a PGS attack, in this case the sea-based version, appeared three years ago in Popular Mechanics:
"'In the Pacific, a nuclear-powered Ohio class submarine surfaces, ready for the president's command to launch. When the order comes, the sub shoots a 65-ton Trident II ballistic missile into the sky. Within 2 minutes, the missile is traveling at more than 20,000 ft. per second. Rozoff immediately explains the April 7 statement of General Leonid Ivashov, joint chief of staff of the Russian armed forces, made in a column entitled "Obama's nuclear surprise."
In that same column Ivashov, refers to the speech by the U.S. president in Prague last year: "The existence of thousands of nuclear weapons is the most dangerous legacy of the Cold War" and his signing of the START II agreement in that same city on April 8, Rozoff quotes the author, who stated:
"'No examples of sacrificial service of the U.S. elites to mankind or peoples of other countries can be discovered in the U.S. history over the past century. Would it be realistic to expect the advent of an African-American president to the White House to change the country's political philosophy traditionally aimed at achieving global dominance? Those believing that something like that is possible should try to realize why the U.S. the country with a military budget already greater than those of all other countries of the world combined continues spending enormous sums of money on preparations for war.'"
"... 'The Prompt Global Strike concept envisages a concentrated strike using several thousand precision conventional weapons in 2-4 hours that would completely destroy the critical infrastructures of the target country and thus force it to capitulate.'"
"'The Prompt Global Strike concept is meant to sustain the U.S. monopoly in the military sphere and to widen the gap between it and the rest of the world. In essence, Obama is trying to deceive the world by talking of a humanity free of nuclear weapons, which would be replaced by other extremely destructive ones, ideal for terrorizing state leaders and achieving the new strategy of total impunity.
The yankis believe that Iran's rendition is already close. The European Union is expected to announce a sanctions package of its own to be signed on July 26.
The last meeting of the 5+1 took place on July 2, after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad affirmed that "his country would return to talks at the end of August with the participation of Brazil and Turkey."
A high-ranking E.U. official "stated that neither Brazil nor Turkey will be invited to take part in talks, at least not at this level."
"Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki stated that he was in favor of defying international sanctions and continuing with the enriched uranium program."
From Tuesday, July 5, in the face of the European reiteration that they are to promote additional measures against Iran, this country has responded that it will not negotiate until September.
Every day the possibilities of overcoming the insurmountable obstacle are reducing further.
What is going to happen is so evident that it can be foreseen in an almost exact form.
For my part, I must make a self-criticism; I committed an error in affirming in the June 27 Reflection that the conflict would break out on the Thursday, Friday or at the latest Saturday. It was already known that Israeli warships were navigating toward that objective together with the yanki naval forces. The order to search Iranian merchant ships was already given.
However, I did not realize that there was a prior step: confirmation of the negation of permission for the inspection of its mercantile fleet on the part of Iran. In analyzing the torturous language of the Security Council imposing sanctions on that country, I did not notice that detail to give the inspection order full effect. It was the only thing missing.
The 60-day period given by the Security Council on June 9 to receive information on compliance with the Resolution expires on August 8.
But something really most lamentable happened. I was working on the latest material on the delicate issue drafted by the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the said document did not contain two key paragraphs the last two of the abovementioned resolution which textually state:
"Requests within 90 days a report from the Director General of the IAEA on whether Iran has established full and sustained suspension of all activities mentioned in resolution 1737 (2006), as well as on the process of Iranian compliance with all the steps required by the IAEA Board of Governors and with other provisions of resolutions 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008) and of this resolution, to the IAEA Board of Governors and in parallel to the Security Council for its consideration;
"Affirms that it shall review Irans actions in light of the report referred to in paragraph 36 above, to be submitted within 90 days, and:
(a) that it shall suspend the implementation of measures if and for so long as Iran suspends all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, as verified by the IAEA, to allow for negotiations in good faith in order to reach an early and mutually acceptable outcome;

(c) that it shall, in the event that the report shows that Iran has not complied with resolutions 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008) and this resolution, adopt further appropriate measures under Article 41 of Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations to persuade Iran to comply with these resolutions and the requirements of the IAEA, and underlines that further decisions will be required should such additional measures be necessary..."

From my point of view, the United States and its NATO allies have said their last word. Two powerful states with authority and prestige did not exercise their right to veto the perfidious U.N. resolution.
It was the only possibility of gaining time to seek some formula for saving the peace, an objective that would have afforded them greater authority to continue fighting for it.
Today, everything is hanging from a tenuous thread.
My principal intention was to advise international public opinion of what was occurring.
I have in part achieved that by observing what was taking place, as a political leader who, for many years, has been confronting the empire, its blockades and its indescribable crimes. But I am not doing it out of revenge.
I am not hesitating to run the risks of compromising my modest moral authority.

TEHRAN - Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has harshly condemned Thursday’s deadly terrorist attacks in Zahedan and says he believes the United States was behind the incident.
“The Americans should know that they have started a game that will not end well for them,” he said in Tehran on Saturday.
He asserted that Iran has ample evidence that the Jundullah terrorist group has links to the United States.
The terrorist group Jundullah, which Iranian officials say enjoys U.S. support, has claimed responsibility for the attacks. In a statement posted on its web site, Jundullah described the attacks as retaliation for Iran’s June 21 execution of the group’s former ringleader, Abdolmalek Rigi.
Larijani said that the United States cannot invent an excuse for the bombings. “They may get away with other issues, but not with this one,” he added.
The fact that some countries’ rhetoric does not correspond with their actions is diplomatic hypocrisy in the international arena, he stated.
The U.S. mouthpieces say one thing in Washington, but the United States’ actions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanon reflect a different reality, he noted.
The parliament speaker called on Iranian officials and security forces to make every effort to capture the perpetrators behind the terrorist attacks as soon as possible in order to bring them to justice.
In addition, he advised Iran’s Sunnis and Shias to maintain unity.
Larijani also offered condolences to the families of the victims and the representatives of Sistan-Baluchestan Province in parliament.

Ex-CIA agent confirms US ties with Jundullah

A former Central Intelligence Agency officer has confirmed US' relations with the terrorist group Jundullah, despite the CIA knowing that the group has close links with the al-Qaeda.
"American intelligence has also had contact with Jundullah. But that contact, as Iran almost certainly knows, was confined to intelligence-gathering on the country," Robert Baer, a former Middle East CIA field officer wrote on the Time.com, IRNA reported early on Saturday.

Iran's president says US and NATO forces offer financial and material support to terrorists, yet US President Barack Obama, ironically enough, sends a condolence message on the recent deadly terrorist attacks in southeast Iran.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that US troops in Afghanistan and Pakistan sponsor such acts of terror, reported IRNA.
"No grouping other than US-backed terrorist groups which are devoid of human feelings can commit such acts," added President Ahmadinejad.
The president further called on the Iranian Foreign Ministry to follow up the terror attack through the Pakistani government.
"We are friends with the Pakistani nation, … but the Pakistani government should be held accountable", he said.
Mahmoud Ahmadi also instructed his office to lodge a complaint with international circles base on the 'existing documents', and follow up on NATO and Israel's cooperation with the terrorists.
"The puppeteers pulling the strings in this show will get nothing", President Ahmadinejad said.
"Such aggressive policies will only fuel public hatred", he underscored.
Two bombs were detonated in quick succession in front of the Zahedan Grand Mosque in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan last Thursday.
