In 2010, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officially announced a new digital identification (ID) program for refugees.
The new program, known as the Biometric Identity Management System (BIMS), was later introduced to dozens of countries — including Ethiopia — in 2017.
Biometric registration enables refugees to secure a digital ID that gives them access to a range of aid services and rights. Although digital IDs have potential benefits in terms of boosting humanitarian response, their use has raised concerns about privacy and exclusion among refugees.
The UNHCR office in Ethiopia explained to Global Voices in an interview that the BIMS system is an additional feature of refugee registration that aims to enhance the profiling of refugees, as well as collect information to enhance self-reliance and eventual inclusion.
“The system was integrated into the comprehensive individual registration exercise to ensure data integrity and data quality,” said Kisut Gebregzabiher, UNHCR spokesperson in Ethiopia.
This is vital for refugees, as the government-recognized identity documentation can constitute proof of legal identity, which is key for the legal, socio-economic and digital inclusion of refugees within host communities. … The system also removes the risk of multiple registrations or identity theft.
BIMS is currently implemented in all 26 refugee camps across Ethiopia as well as urban and other centers where refugees are sheltered.
Privacy concerns
Several refugees at Jewi camp, located in the western Gambella region and Hitsats, in the northern region of Tigray, told Global Voices that the UNHCR staff never mentioned the drawbacks of biometric technology.
The digital registration process captures multiple characteristics including fingerprints, iris recognition, facial structure and voice. The process, therefore, has led to concerns among refugees over privacy infringement (when data is shared with third parties) and exclusion from essential services upon refusal.
When the technology was first introduced, most refugees were not aware of the potential risks of digital registration until some of the more educated people in the camps started talking about its implications.
One South Sudanese refugee in Jewi camp who did not want his name revealed due to security concerns told Global Voices that they were briefed about the biometric registration without any explanation by camp authorities of these risks.
Digital registration could lead to serious repercussions for those refugees who do not want their information shared with either their host country or country of origin for fears of discrimination, forced repatriation or retaliation, some refugees told Global Voices.
In Hitsat camp, Eritrean refugees who were in the military fear that the Ethiopian government might share their data with the Eritrean government.
Eritrean refugees became especially concerned after the recent rapprochement of Ethiopia and Eritrea, who restored diplomatic ties in July 2018, ending two decades of hostility. The two neighbors fought a bloody border war from 1998 to 2000, which killed approximately 70,000 people.
Biometric and personal data collected by UNHCR are reportedly shared with third parties, a claim that Gebregzabiher, the UNHCR official, rejected: “Refugee data are not shared with any external parties. The UNHCR data protection policies govern the data protection for all data owned by UNHCR.”
What also makes the digital ID registration risky is the fact that Ethiopia does not have laws specifically designed to deal with privacy and data protection issues — except a few sets of rules contained in various pieces of legislation that guarantee the right to privacy.
“UNHCR must respect the rights of every person going through the registration process,’’ one Eritrean refugee told Global Voices, also emphasizing the need “to understand why biometric data is being collected and how it will be used as well as the potential risks.”
Gebregzabiher, the UNHCR spokesperson in Ethiopia, denied the refugees’ claims. He told Global Voices that they do provide refugees with explanations on the “benefits and implications” of the new system before embarking on the exercise. When Global Voices asked Gebregzabiher to clarify what he meant by “implications,” he said: “the disadvantages of not implementing the digital system.”
“It was clarified to the refugees that the higher standard of registration means better protection, better-targeted programming, enhanced data integrity and protection of data fraud,” Gebregzabiher told Global Voices.
Refugees who spoke to Global Voices said that frustrations are rising at camps over the potential risks of the digital ID and as a result, there is growing defiance toward the unpopular digital identification system. One refugee at Hitsats camp, who also wished to remain anonymous, said:
At first, we had no knowledge of the risks of recognition. Most of us completed the biometric registration out of honesty and due to the trust we have for UNHCR and Ethiopia.
This person told Global Voices that they were not asked for consent before their biometric data was collected.
Another refugee who also asked for anonymity due to security concerns said:
The registration process doesn’t embrace consent. Being asked for consent is seen as a luxury right. We get registered as a means of force because we don’t have any other option to get food or protection.
‘An obligation for survival’
Refugees have been told that those who refuse to participate in the digital registration are excluded from receiving UNHCR aid such as food rations or any other assistance, essentially giving them no choice but to oblige the exercise.
Several refugees in Hitsats and Jewi camps who spoke with Global Voices by phone said they are not comfortable with the newly introduced digital registration system and question its benefits.
A former Eritrean soldier who wished to remain anonymous due to security concerns said:
Unlike what the UNHCR staff is saying, the new digital registration system didn’t initiate any new special benefits package. We are getting the same usual assistance like food rations and other non-food items we used to get. … I doubt if the new system would at all bring any extra aid benefits.
For one Eritrean refugee, a mother of one who also requested anonymity, the obligation of digital registration is seen as a precondition to receiving the basic services from the UN refugee agency:
It is appalling to see UNHCR using digital registration as an obligation for survival. … I felt like I was held hostage for food and shelter by the one UN agency trusted to lean on.
Gebregzabiher, the UNHCR spokesman, noted that he had not yet seen anyone refuse registration.
“The launch of the exercise was preceded by a massive awareness-raising campaign so that refugees have a proper understanding of the benefits of the new registration system and collaborate with the experts doing the registration. As such, there was no resistance from refugees whatsoever,” Gebregzabiher said.
However, the refugees whom Global Voices spoke to in Ethiopia said several refugees who refused to register had to leave the camps.
One South Sudanese refugee who wished to remain anonymous said that the “majority of those who refuse registration is out of the camp since they were told to do so. Some of them stay partially in the camp and others have integrated themselves to host communities in Gambella while others had to return back to South Sudan.”
Global Voices further learned that at Jewi refugee camp, followers of certain Christian groups such as Protestants, the Messianic Jewish Church of God and Congregation of Yawuhe, also refused the registration process on religious grounds.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and health officials continue to grapple with the coronavirus outbreak that has killed at least 132 people in China and sickened 6,100 worldwide. And back in 2018, Billionaire Bill Gates gave a warning that the world wasn’t prepared for pandemics, which should “concern us all.”
Speaking at an event hosted by Massachusetts Medical Society and the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) on April 27, 2018, Gates said he believed “the world needs to prepare for pandemics in the same serious way it prepares for war.”
“This preparation includes staging simulations, war games and preparedness exercises so that we can better understand how diseases will spread and how to deal with responses such as quarantine and communications to minimize panic,” Gates said.
Pandemics occur when epidemics spread between countries. And though coronavirus is not considered a pandemic, the spread of such viruses is a serious concern.
Gates noted that while a 2009 outbreak of H1N1 influenza (dubbed the swine flu) wasn’t as lethal as people initially feared, it did call attention to the fact that the world doesn’t have a coordinated approach to help with early detection and spread of pandemics.
“The Ebola epidemic in West Africa four years ago was another wake up call, as the number of confirmed cases climbed, the death toll mounted, and local health systems collapsed. Again, the world was much too slow to respond,” he said of the 2014-2016 epidemic, which killed 11,000 and infected more than 28,000. Eleven people were treated for Ebola in the United States during that epidemic, according to the CDC.
Gates also compared future deadly global pandemics to a new type of “military weapon.”
Gates recalled that at the 2017 Munich Security Conference he “asked world leaders to imagine that somewhere in the world a new weapon exists or could emerge that is capable of killing millions of people, bringing economies to a standstill, and casting nations into chaos.
“If it were a military weapon, the response would be to do everything possible to develop countermeasures,” he said at the NEJM event, adding that a “sense of urgency is lacking” when it comes to biologic threats.
This should concern everyone said Gates, “because history has taught us there will be another deadly global pandemic.
“We can’t predict when, but given the continual emergence of new pathogens, the increasing risk of a bioterror attack, and the ever-increasing connectedness of our world, there is a significant probability that a large and lethal modern-day pandemic will occur in our lifetime,” Gates said.
To be better prepared, Gates said world leaders need to invest in approaches such as antiviral drugs and antibody therapies that can be stockpiled or rapidly manufactured to the spread of these future diseases.
On Sunday, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced that it is donating $10 million in “emergency funds and corresponding technical support to help frontline responders in China and Africa accelerate their efforts to contain the global spread of 2019-nCoV,” as coronavirus is officially known, according to the foundation’s website.
“We are deeply concerned about the development of the current epidemic and express our high respect to those who are fighting on the front lines,” Yinuo Li, director of the Gates Foundation China said in a statement to China Daily.

When I decided 20 years ago to make global health the focus of my philanthropic work, I didn't imagine that I'd be speaking at a conference on international security policy. But I'm here today because I believe our worlds are more tightly linked than most people realize.
Here's one example. I spend a lot of my time on the effort to eradicate polio. We've made incredible progress. Of the 125 countries where polio was endemic, 122 countries have eliminated the disease. Only Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria have never been polio-free. And that's no coincidence.
War zones and other fragile state settings are the most difficult places to eliminate epidemics. They're also some of the most likely places for them to begin—as we've seen with Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and with cholera in the Congo Basin and the Horn of Africa. So, to fight global pandemics, we must fight poverty, too.
It's also true that the next epidemic could originate on the computer screen of a terrorist intent on using genetic engineering to create a synthetic version of the smallpox virus . . . or a super contagious and deadly strain of the flu.
The point is, we ignore the link between health security and international security at our peril.
Whether it occurs by a quirk of nature or at the hand of a terrorist, epidemiologists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year. And they say there is a reasonable probability the world will experience such an outbreak in the next 10-15 years.
It's hard to get your mind around a catastrophe of that scale, but it happened not that long ago. In 1918, a particularly virulent and deadly strain of flu killed between 50 million and 100 million people.
You might be wondering how likely these doomsday scenarios really are. The fact that a deadly global pandemic has not occurred in recent history shouldn't be mistaken for evidence that a deadly pandemic will not occur in the future.
And even if the next pandemic isn't on the scale of the 1918 flu, we would be wise to consider the social and economic turmoil that might ensue if something like Ebola made its way into a lot of major urban centers. We were lucky that the last Ebola outbreak was contained before it did.
The good news is that with advances in biotechnology, new vaccines and drugs can help prevent epidemics from spreading out of control. And, most of the things we need to do to protect against a naturally occurring pandemic are the same things we must prepare for an intentional biological attack.
First and most importantly, we have to build an arsenal of new weapons—vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics.
Vaccines can be especially important in containing epidemics. But today, it typically takes up to 10 years to develop and license a new vaccine. To significantly curb deaths from a fast-moving airborne pathogen, we would have to get that down considerably—to 90 days or less.
We took an important step last month with the launch of a new public-private partnership called the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. The hope is that CEPI will enable the world to produce safe, effective vaccines as quickly as new threats emerge.
The really big breakthrough potential is in emerging technology platforms that leverage recent advances in genomics to dramatically reduce the time needed to develop vaccines.
This is important because we can't predict whether the next deadly disease will be one we already know, or something we've never seen before.
Without getting too technical, these new platform technologies essentially create a delivery vehicle for synthetic genetic material that instructs your cells to make a vaccine inside your own body. And the great thing is that once you've built a vaccine platform for one pathogen, you can use it again for other pathogens. You only need to substitute a few genes.
That flexibility and reusability would cut the vaccine development and approval timeline significantly. And we can apply this new vaccine technology to other hard-to-treat diseases like HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis.
The $550 million that launched CEPI is just a down payment. We will need considerably more support from governments to fund the R&D necessary to realize the promise of this new technology.
Of course, the preventive capacity of a vaccine won't help if a pathogen has already spread out of control. Because epidemics can quickly take root in the places least equipped to fight them, we also need to improve surveillance.
That starts with strengthening basic public health systems in the most vulnerable countries. This has a double benefit.
It improves our ability to prevent, detect, and respond to epidemics. And it enables us to break the cycle of poverty and disease that is at the root of so much instability in the world.
We also have to ensure that every country is conducting routine surveillance to gather and verify disease outbreak intelligence.
And we must ensure that countries share information in a timely way, and that there are adequate laboratory resources to identify and monitor suspect pathogens. We can build on the lab network that's in place now for polio, as well as a new network of field sites and labs that will help us better understand the causes of child mortality in poor countries.
The third thing we need to do is prepare for epidemics the way the military prepares for war. This includes germ games and other preparedness exercises so we can better understand how diseases will spread, how people will respond in a panic, and how to deal with things like overloaded highways and communications systems.
We also need trained medical personnel ready to contain an epidemic quickly, and better coordination with the military to help with logistics and to secure areas.
The Ebola epidemic might have been much worse if the U.S. and UK governments had not used military resources to help build health centers, manage logistics, and fly people in and out of affected countries.
It is encouraging that global alliances like the G7 and the G20 are beginning to focus on pandemic preparedness, and that leaders like Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Solberg are championing health security.
By the end of this year, 67 countries are expected to have completed independent assessments of their epidemic readiness. But there isn't enough money to help the poorest countries with epidemic preparation.
The irony is that the cost of ensuring adequate pandemic preparedness worldwide is estimated at $3.4 billion a year—yet the projected annual loss from a pandemic could run as high as $570 billion.
Pandemics are everyone's problem—and as leaders, we cannot ignore it.
Imagine if I told you that somewhere in this world, there's a weapon that exists—or that could emerge—capable of killing tens of thousands, or millions, of people, bringing economies to a standstill, and throwing nations into chaos.
You would say that we need to do everything possible to gather intelligence and develop effective countermeasures to reduce the threat.
That is the situation we face today with biological threats. We may not know if that weapon is man-made or a product of nature. But one thing we can be almost certain of. A highly lethal global pandemic will occur in our lifetimes.
When I was a kid, there was really only one existential threat the world faced. The threat of a nuclear war.
By the late 1990s, most reasonable people had come to accept that climate changed represented another major threat to humankind.
I view the threat of deadly pandemics right up there with nuclear war and climate change. Getting ready for a global pandemic is every bit as important as nuclear deterrence and avoiding a climate catastrophe.
Innovation, cooperation, and careful planning can dramatically mitigate the risks presented by each of these threats.
Indeed, the fact that fewer people die in conflicts now than at any time in human history is the direct result of choices made together by the international community—including through efforts like the Munich Security Conference.
The global good will evidenced at the historic Paris Climate talks a year ago give us a chance to prevent the worst effects of climate change.
The opportunity now is to extend that cooperation to pandemic preparedness. We've gotten a good start on innovation with the launch of CEPI. Reflecting on the lessons learned with Ebola, there is a shared consensus about the things we need to invest in.
I'm optimistic that a decade from now, we can be much better prepared for a lethal epidemic—if we're willing to put a fraction of what we spend on defense budgets and new weapons systems into epidemic readiness.
When the next pandemic strikes, it could be another catastrophe in the annals of the human race. Or it could be something else altogether. An extraordinary triumph of human will. A moment when we prove yet again that, together, we are capable of taking on the world's biggest challenges to create a safer, healthier, more stable world.
A viral claim on social media says Bill Gates is planning to use microchip implants to fight the coronavirus. Most of the posts say Gates will “launch human-implantable capsules that have ‘digital certificates’ which can show who has been tested for the coronavirus and who has been vaccinated against it.” The claim has been shared at least 1,000 times on Facebook ( here , bit.ly/3aoVnIV , here ) and at least 3,600 times on Twitter, as of March 27, 2020 ( here , here , here ).

The story, titled “Bill Gates will use microchip implants to fight coronavirus,” includes an authentic quote from a Q&A with Reddit about COVID-19 ( here ). But the story then uses his “Ask Me Anything” answer as a springboard for speculation and unattributed conclusions. They were not supported by Gates’ responses in the interview.
Written like a news article, the post misleadingly says that “quantum dot dye,” a technology indeed founded by the Gates Foundation, would be used as “human-implantable capsules that have ‘digital certificates’ which can show who has been tested for the coronavirus” ( here ).
Kevin McHugh, one of the lead authors of the “quantum dot dye” research paper, said, “The quantum dot dye technology is not a microchip or human-implantable capsule and to my knowledge there are no plans to use this for coronavirus.”
Gates did mention the possibility of having a “digital certificate” for health records “eventually,” but he did not say these certificates would be “microchip implants.” This was the Reddit exchange:
“Q: What changes are we going to have to make to how businesses operate to maintain our economy while providing social distancing?

Bill Gates: The question of which businesses should keep going is tricky. Certainly, food supply and the health system. We still need water, electricity and the internet. Supply chains for critical things need to be maintained. Countries are still figuring out what to keep running. Eventually we will have some digital certificates to show who has recovered or been tested recently or when we have a vaccine who has received it.”
When asked about the claim, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation told Reuters, “The reference to ‘digital certificates’ relates to efforts to create an open source digital platform with the goal of expanding access to safe, home-based testing.”
IBM describes a digital certificate as an “electronic document” used to identify an individual, and associate the identity with a public key. Like a driver’s license or a passport, it provides proof of a person’s identity ( here ).

Bill Gates is a promoter of things unhealthy.
According to Bill we need more vaccines, more Genetically Modified Food, more education, more sustainability, and more computers.
If Bill (and the powers behind him) have their way we will soon need these computers to do more of our thinking for us. As each successive generation comes of age it is thoroughly poisoned by the ever-increasing number of toxic vaccines and wide variety of Genetically Modified material being supplied to it by brain-washed Doctors and unwitting parents. They are then handed over to state-run schools practicing Bill and Melinda Gate’s brain-atrophying Common Core curriculum which further insures that the common citizen is completely dumbed-down and unable to think for themselves, no less resist obvious tyranny and wrong-doing.
It is a frightening case of the return of feudalism by “science”, “medicine” and technology—and Bill Gates is at the forefront of this agenda.

The same can be said of Bill’s father, Bill Senior (actually, “William H. Gates, Jr.” but that gets confusing). Bill Sr. was a board member for Planned Parenthood but Bill made it into this world OK. It’s just your kids they want slaughtered in the womb.
The Gates family legacy has been one of continued hostility towards life, itself.
For Bill Jr., especially, “population control” is top priority.
Gates’ eugenics pedigree is a matter of public record. He openly shares what family dinner was like in the Gates household in his Bill Moyers interview:
When I was growing up, my parents were always involved in various volunteer things. My dad was head of Planned Parenthood. And it was very controversial to be involved with that. And so it’s fascinating. At the dinner table my parents are very good at sharing the things that they were doing. And almost treating us like adults, talking about that.
Bill Sr. now sits as co-chair of his son and daughter-in-law’s eugenics organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Their methodologies have evolved leaps-and-bounds from Bill Senior’s days but the objective remains the same. The new multifaceted approach would make for a great science fiction saga if it wasn’t true. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is employing this sophisticated eugenics program by partnering with powerful United Nations organizations like the WHO and UNICEF. They disguise their efforts as philanthropic endeavors to free the people of the world from hunger and disease when in actuality they simply want to free the world of people.
It is an agenda shrouded in classic Orwellian doublespeak. Take the name of a government agency (i.e. the World Health Organization) or a law ( i.e. Affordable Care Act) and invert it’s meaning, and will you will likely get something very close to its true purpose.
Their stated goal of population reduction is being conducted in part through the weaponization of food and medicine. Bill Jr. invested 23 million dollars into the biotech giant Monsanto, which invented Genetically Modified Corn, Soy and Canola. Pick up any box of processed food, if we can call it food, and read the ingredients. If it does not contain GMO Corn, soy, and canola, it contains at least one. The evidence that GMO’s cause disease has been piling up for decades as the list of countries banning their import and cultivation grows. In 2015 Vermont passed a mandatory GMO labeling law. Bill openly promotes GMO’s as the answer to world hunger, in exactly the same vein as when the British Army handed small pox-infested blankets out to desperate American Indians during the French and Indian War.
Another vector used in this campaign of annihilation are vaccines which have long been a source of pestilence. According to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s own website “In 2012, India stopped the [polio] virus”.
The oral polio vaccine is so easy to administer, even non-doctors can give it.

In 2014 India was officially declared Polio free by the WHO.
Yet, critics are saying the reverse is true: polio and polio-like symptoms are on the rise in India. How can this be?
It’s known as “vaccine virus-shed”. If a vaccine uses strains of the actual virus (as many do) in order to encourage the body to build immunization, subjects who receive the vaccine orally are now carriers through bodily fluids for that virus.
In 1977, an Arkansas woman acquired paralytic polio from mutated Sabin live trivalent oral polio vaccine (TOPV) viruses shed from her vaccinated three-month-old infant’s diapers.1
The rate of actual Polio cases in India appears to have risen steadily as a result of the cooperative efforts of the WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation but, because cases of Polio were redefined as Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralyses, the literature records that the vaccine was effective. Government surveillance data show that while India is set to be tagged as polio-free, it has actually become the nation with the world’s highest rate of NPAFP [Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralysis] incidence.
In the past 13 months, India has reported 53,563 cases of NPAFP at a national rate of 12 per 100,000 children—way above the global benchmark set by WHO of 2 per 100,000. WHO data indicate NPAFP cases have been increasing steadily since 2003, when the number was at 8,000.

In 2004, 12,000 cases of NPAFP were reported in the country, increasing dramatically to 25,000 in 2005. In 2007, the number crossed 40,000 and in 2011 the year India reported its last polio case—nearly 61,000 children were detected to be suffering from NPAFP.
This is the worst type of fraud and a crime against humanity.
The medical establishment will stand by the WHO’s fraudulent claims and drown out any voice of reason to the best of their ability. It is Rome’s control over information that allows such atrocities to continue largely unfettered.

One of the “contaminants”, or bio-weapons, contained in the polio vaccine was the SV-40 virus administered to 98 million unsuspecting Americans. SV-40 has been identified as a Cancer-causing viral agent. This same Sv-40 virus is still being used today in the third world by the Gates Foundation and others. In a stunt to prove the effectiveness of the polio vaccine, Tulane surgeon and medical researcher Dr. Alton Ochsner administered a the vaccine to two his own grandchildren during the polio inoculation campaign of the 1950’s. One of his grandchildren died and the other contracted Polio.
The broader vaccine campaign gained a huge head of steam in 1986 when Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act sponsored by New York (D) Senator Henry Waxman, which limited big pharma’s liability from injury and death resulting from their toxin-laden injections.
It was shortly after this that the American public witnessed a precipitous rise in the number of vaccines administered to American children in their first five years to where now America is the runaway leader in the number of immunizations administered to children. The CDC Childhood Immunization schedule skyrocketed from 11 injections in 1983 to 36 or more injections as of 2015.
Recently, California Governor Jerry Brown signed bill SB277 into law, which took effect July 1, 2016. The Law is “one of the most far-reaching vaccination laws in the nation” according to the LA Times, which “barred religious and other personal-belief exemptions for schoolchildren, a move that could affect tens of thousands of students and sets up a potential court battle with opponents of immunization”. An opposition site to SB 277 explains the effects of the law simply, “No shot. No daycare. No school. Every child. Every vaccine.” Such a draconian, harmful, and unconstitutional Law is reminiscent of a feudal system. It may be that the reason this law treats American citizens like modern day surfs is because it emanated from or was otherwise inspired by Rome, which wants to regain the total power it once exerted in the Dark Ages. The Vatican’s ability to wield power over distance lands is made possible in part by the service of her provincial regents who pretend to serve their people but, in actuality are serving Rome. Governor Brown is an example of one such leader but, there are many more of his ilk haunting the corridors of power throughout America and the world. Attending Jesuit St. Ignatius Loyola High School in San Francisco, Gov. Brown then studied at Jesuit Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA. He trained for the Catholic Priesthood at Sacred Heart Novitiate, a Jesuit seminary, for three years before enrolling at the University of Berkeley, CA. A George F Will column reported that while speaking in support of a proposal for an Oakland Military Institute Gov. Brown said “a pre-Vatican II Jesuit school in the form of a military academy. I am applying the truth I was brought up on.” ‘The truth of the Jesuits’ founder, Ignatius Loyola, whose principles, says Brown, have’ “worked for 400 years.” This is illustrative of how the Vatican is able to conduct such large scale operations. During his TED Talk he articulated in the video Depopulation exposed in thirteen minutes. “Population x Services x Energy x Carbon = CO2.” According to Gates, “we” need to get one of those numbers near zero. In a multiplication equation the only way to get a zero value is to multiply a number by zero. Since people will always require some form of service, energy, and will always produce some carbon (we exhale carbon), the logical conclusion is that Bill wants the people (useless eaters) part of that equation down to “near zero”.
Unlike Hitler and his Jesuit handler Father Staempfle, Bill has to look no further than his adoring wife Melinda to find his Jesuit trained coadjutor. Melinda was raised Roman Catholic and was Catholic-educated her entire life including her time at the Dallas Urseline Academy, a sister college of the Jesuits. This would explain why the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation spent 19 million dollars for the expansion of a network of Jesuit High Schools and why Bill who has previously spoke in agnostic terms regarding religion said—

In the case of vaccines they cleverly secreted the problem within the solution in a satanic merry-go-round where vaccines cause the disease that the vaccines are used to treat, thereby causing more disease.
Honest inquiry is dismissed as ludicrous by conflating two very different issues, vaccine theory and vaccine safety. An honest debate can and should be had over vaccine theory. Vaccine safety is a different discussion entirely.
Even if we grant that a limited number of appropriately-formulated and delivered vaccines are beneficial to human health, it does not follow that the best time to do this is during a human’s infancy when their immune functions are at their weakest. Nor does it follow that vaccines in their current formulations are safe. Who can even be trusted to verify this for laymen? How easy is it to control the highly-specialized laboratories we rely on for such information?
Even Hollywood is catching on as celebrities like Rob Schnyder, Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrie have publicly criticized the CDC and the medical establishment over vaccinations. However, such high-profile voices would never be allowed to address root causes like an encyclical from Pope Francis indicating that the Vatican is pushing depopulation.

Their goal is take away our freedoms, then if we want them back we'll be forced to receive vaccines to gain a digital certificate of movement which allows us to be tracked on 5G control grids. This interview with the late Norman Dodd was already viewed as one of the most important on the Internet. If you haven't seen it before, you really must add it to your list. Dodd was the chief investigator of the Reece Committee, his job was to look into the tax-exempt founds e.g. Rockefeller Foundation, and to find out what they were actually up to. In the interview he explains that the foundations are really there to make changes in the world, and that the only way they know how to make changes is through war, so their job is really to start wars. Since war was the only effective method they knew for making major changes, they would continue to use it until they had other equivalently effective methods.
10 years ago the Rockefeller Foundation released a scenario document, Page 18, where they looked into different scenarios which could influence the way in which our world evolves, one of the scenarios analyzed was a pandemic. So what we're seeing here, is that over the decades the Rockefeller Foundation has moved on, they no longer rely on war as a tool to make changes, now they have new tools at their disposal, like pandemics, making them the chief suspects as to who has placed the world into the current pandemic scenario.
Now, you may be wondering what kinds of changes the Rockefellers want to make to society, well one of their former friends blew the whistle in a video of similar importance to the Norman Dodd interview. Aaron Russo was a filmmaker and a close friend with one of the Rockefellers. Aaron was told their secret plans for the world, which included everyone being micro-chipped in a cashless society, where one requires an implanted micro-chip for buying and selling. If TPTB didn't like what you were doing they could switch off your chip, making it almost impossible for you to function in society.
So, as Bill Gates (who is allied with the Rockefellers) recently admitted on Reddit, the plan is for people to have digital certificates of movement, Germany is calling them antibody certificates. It's very easy to see how these digital certificates of movement, initially on your smart phone, will eventually be installed on implanted micro-chips, in case you lose your phone and for your convenience, they will say. You won't be allowed in society without one, as they will claim you may spread a virus, for you to be allowed out in public they will force you to have this, which also means receiving the vaccines and whatever ingredients eugenics enthusiasts Gates and the Rockefellers decide to put in them.
Last but not least, the 5G control grid which is being rapidly rolled out is there to track your movement by connecting with the digital certificate/chip, this is why 5G is being prioritized despite there being so much public resistance and unknown health risks. The 2010 Rockefeller Foundation’s ‘Lock Step’ paper and the Johns Hopkins Event 201 predicted and rehearsed for a pandemic. The two organizations have a long history of collaboration ever since 1916, when the John Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health was founded with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. Since then, they have become inseparable.
The Rockefeller Foundation published a paper in 2010 titled Scenarios for the Future of Technology and International Development. The first scenario was called LOCK STEP and was described as follows: “A world of tighter top-down government control and more authoritarian leadership, with limited innovation and growing citizen pushback.”
In this scenario, a virus pandemic appeares suddenly, quickly infecting populations around the world, destroying economies by interrupting mobility of people and goods, and debilitating industries and global supply chains.
This makes it possible for government leaders to take total control over their citizens as a public-health measure – a process the people greatly disliked but are psychologically incapable of resisting, because it is done in the name of protecting them. Thus, the economies and political structures of the whole world emerge as a united totalitarian system with a resentful and unruly population but one that can be effectively controlled by new technology.
We see from this that the economic and political effects of a pandemic were being carefully studied at the Rockefeller Foundation at least as early as 2010. More recently, a pandemic simulation took place at Event 201, which was hosted by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This occurred six weeks before the first reported outbreak of the coronavirus. Almost to a tee, it followed the initial phase of the LOCK STEP scenario.
Now this is where it gets interesting, because it deals with the connection between the Rockefeller Lock Step scenario and the Johns Hopkins Event 201. Some of the history of this collaboration is not pleasant. For example, In the 1940s, 750 victims filed a $1-billion lawsuit against the Rockefeller Foundation, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Johns Hopkins University, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation, alleging that they were the driving force behind human experiments in the 1940s in which vulnerable populations of Guatemalans were intentionally exposed to syphilis, gonorrhea, and other venereal diseases, without informed consent. The experiments targeted school children, orphans, psychiatric hospital patients, prison inmates, and military conscripts.
Key Rockefeller and Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the Guatemala Experiments also were behind the now infamous Tuskegee experiments in which 600 impoverished African-American sharecroppers were never informed they had syphilis, and were given placebos rather than treatment.
Bill and Melinda Gates now have joined this team and, as previously stated, they co-sponsored Event 201. It is logical that they should come together on this project. All parties involved are obsessed with population reduction. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation granted at least $60-million to the Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health to fund the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health that is located inside of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In their dictionary, reproductive health means drastically reducing the birth rate.
None of this proves ill intent of these parties, but it does (or should) sound the alarm to be cautions when these people and their organizations ask us to trust their judgment and leadership in a health experiment called vaccines, most of which never have been tested for safety and all of which are loaded with toxins known to reduce fertility and shorten lifespan. Could that be a covert way of reducing the population? Think about it.

For years, Bill Gates has been at the forefront of research regarding global pandemics and mass vaccination campaigns. In the past decade, Gates went on record several times stating that the world was not ready for a global pandemic.
In October 2019 (only a few months before the apparition of COVID-19) the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (in cooperation with the World Economic Forum) hosted Event 201, a 3.5-hour table-top simulation of a global pandemic.

Oddly enough, this simulation was about a novel coronavirus that would kill millions. About eight weeks later, an actual novel coronavirus spurred in China. This lead to some people wondering if this exercise actually predicted the spread of COVID-19. In response to these questions, a statement was posted on the Event 201 website.
Statement about nCoV and our pandemic exercise
In October 2019, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security hosted a pandemic tabletop exercise called Event 201 with partners, the World Economic Forum and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Recently, the Center for Health Security has received questions about whether that pandemic exercise predicted the current novel coronavirus outbreak in China. To be clear, the Center for Health Security and partners did not make a prediction during our tabletop exercise. For the scenario, we modeled a fictional coronavirus pandemic, but we explicitly stated that it was not a prediction. Instead, the exercise served to highlight preparedness and response challenges that would likely arise in a very severe pandemic. We are not now predicting that the nCoV-2019 outbreak will kill 65 million people. Although our tabletop exercise included a mock novel coronavirus, the inputs we used for modeling the potential impact of that fictional virus are not similar to nCoV-2019.
On March 13th, about a day after COVID-19 began shutting down the entire Western world, Bill Gates stepped down from the public board of Microsoft to “dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and climate change”. As the pandemic spread across the world, Gates became an outspoken and authoritative figure on the pandemic crisis, appearing all over mass media to share his views and recommendations.
On March 18th, Bill Gates took part in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit titled I’m Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. AMA about COVID-19. where he answered questions about the pandemic. In one of his answers, Gates referred to a “digital certificate” to keep track of who got vaccinated.

Simply put, ID2020 is looking to create a digital identification system that would store a wealth of personal information and that would go beyond the limits of national governments. The official website of ID2020 states that a global digital identity is necessary to keep track of refugees and ID-less people in developing countries. Of course, people in developed countries would be ID-ed as well. The website states:
We Need to Get Digital ID Right
Unfortunately, current models of digital ID do not meet everyone’s needs. They are generally archaic, insecure, lacking adequate privacy protection, and for over a billion people worldwide, unavailable.
Everyone should have access to a digital ID that enables them to prove who they are across institutional and international borders and across time, while giving them control over how their personal information is collected, used, and shared.
In an article published by ID2020 in 2018, vaccines are the perfect way to introduce digital identity to the world – especially infants. Appropriately titled Immunization: an entry point for digital identity, the article states:
Because immunization is conducted in infancy, providing children with a digital child health card would give them a unique, portable digital identity early in life. And as children grow, their digital child health card can be used to access secondary services, such as primary school, or ease the process of obtaining alternative credentials. Effectively the child health card becomes the first step in establishing a legal, broadly recognized identity.
In short, according to ID2020, vaccinations are the perfect opportunity to introduce a digital ID that would store the medical history of each individual. This identity would also be used to grant access to basic rights and services.
ID2020 is already testing the introduction of digital IDs in Bangladesh. On August 2019, ID2020 published a “Request for information” article stating:
A2i and its partners Gavi and ID2020 are committed to jointly researching and implementing a unique ID for infants through digitisation of vaccination processes in Bangladesh.
The program will provide infants and children with a portable, biometrically-linked digital ID either at the point of birth registration or at the time of their immunizations, simultaneously supporting three shared objectives:
Driving improvements in CRVS (Demographic and Social Statistics) coverage and process
Supporting improvements in vaccination process and equity
Ultimately, supporting access to rights and services throughout one’s life-course.
In this Bangladesh experiment, digital ID is “biometrically-linked”, meaning that it is based on the fingerprints of individuals. The article describes the process in place:
Information is required regarding biometric scanners capable of capturing the fingerprint biometrics of parents during phase 1 with the ambition to also effectively capture infant biometrics in phase 2. Scanners can be cabled or Bluetooth. Scanners must be a minimum of FBI certified FAP30, portable, robust and capturing a minimum of 500 pixels per inch. Please state the port type on the scanner(s), for example, micro USB, USB C, or other.
While this project is linked to biometrics, Bill Gates has been funding research on a different form of vaccine identification: The quantum dot tattoo.

An article in Futurism titled An Invisible Quantum Dot ‘Tattoo’ Could Be Used to ID Vaccinated Kids reviewed this study:
For the people overseeing nationwide vaccination initiatives in developing countries, keeping track of who had which vaccination and when can be a tough task.
But researchers from MIT might have a solution: they’ve created an ink that can be safely embedded in the skin alongside the vaccine itself, and it’s only visible using a special smartphone camera app and filter.
In other words, they’ve found a covert way to embed the record of a vaccination directly in a patient’s skin rather than documenting it electronically or on paper – and their low-risk tracking system could greatly simplify the process of maintaining accurate vaccine records, especially on a larger scale.

The invisible “tattoo” accompanying the vaccine is a pattern made up of minuscule quantum dots – tiny semiconducting crystals that reflect light – that glows under infrared light. “It’s possible someday that this ‘invisible’ approach could create new possibilities for data storage, biosensing, and vaccine applications that could improve how medical care is provided, particularly in the developing world,” MIT professor and senior author Robert Langer said in the statement.
The article states that this study was the result of a direct request from Bill Gates.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded the team’s research, which was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on Wednesday.
According to a Scientific American story, the project came about following a direct request from Microsoft founder Bill Gates himself, who has been personally involved in efforts to eradicate polio and measles through vaccinations.
In Conclusion
While answering a question about conducting business in the era of social distancing, Bill Gates replied that “digital certificates” will be used to determine who had COVID-19, who recovered from it, who was recently tested for it and who received the vaccine. This short (and unexpected answer) opened a gigantic pandora box of what could be in store in the near future: The inevitable mass vaccination campaign to eradicate COVID-19 would be the perfect opportunity to introduce a worldwide digital ID. This system would store a wealth of information about each individual (including vaccination history) and would be used to grant access to rights and services. Although Gates did not go into specifics, “digital certificates” could be linked to biometrics or a quantum dot tattoo.
Considering the fact that this entire project is eerily reminiscent to a passage in the Book of Revelation (a Mark of the Beast that is received on the “right hand or forehead” and that is required “to buy or to sell”), the introduction of such a system would most likely be received with a great deal of resistance. And not only from religious people.

In a lengthy interview with Bill Moyers released today, Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates reveals the inspiration for his funding of pro-abortion population control measures.
Responding to a question by Moyers on how he came to fund “reproductive issues” Gates answered, “When I was growing up, my parents were always involved in various volunteer things. My dad was head of Planned Parenthood. And it was very controversial to be involved with that. And so it’s fascinating. At the dinner table my parents are very good at sharing the things that they were doing. And almost treating us like adults, talking about that.”
In the interview Gates says he is moved by measurable progress and on “safe birth reproductive family planning issues” he says.
“There’s a measurable impact when you can go in and educate families, but primarily women, about their different choices. There’s real impact that you can have in this area. Anything to do with reproductive health.”
He claims he has seen beyond Malthusian conceptions of useless eaters since, he says, he has seen that by improving health and education population decreases as parents decide to have less children.
Despite all his distancing from Malthus, Gates remains steadfast to the unfounded Malthusian fear of overpopulation.

In a recent candid interview, Bill Gates outlined that, despite the comparatively small threat of Coronavirus, he and his colleagues “don’t want a lot of recovered people” who have acquired natural immunity. They instead are hoping we become reliant on vaccines and anti-viral medication.
Shockingly, Gates also suggests people be made to have a digital ID showing their vaccination status, and that people without this “digital immunity proof” would not be allowed to travel. Such an approach would mean very big money for vaccine producers.
On March 24 Bill Gates gave a highly revelatory 50-minute interview (above) to Chris Anderson. Anderson is the Curator of TED, the non-profit that runs the TED Talks.
The Gates interview is the second in a new series of daily ‘Ted Connects’ interviews focused on COVID-19. The series’s website says that:
TED Connects: Community and Hope is a free, live, daily conversation series featuring experts whose ideas can help us reflect and work through this uncertain time with a sense of responsibility, compassion and wisdom.”
Anderson asked Gates at 3:49 in the video of the interview – which is quickly climbing to three million views – about a ‘Perspective’ article by Gates that was published February 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“You wrote that this could be the once-in-a-century pandemic that people have been fearing. Is that how you think of it, still?” queried Anderson.
“Well, it’s awful to say this but, we could have a respiratory virus whose case fatality rate was even higher. If this was something like smallpox, that kills 30 percent of people. So this is horrific,” responded Gates.
“But, in fact, most people even who get the COVID disease are able to survive. So in that, it’s quite infectious – way more infectious than MERS [Middle East Respiratory Syndrome] or SARS [Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome] were. [But] it’s not as fatal as they were. And yet the disruption we’re seeing in order to knock it down is really completely unprecedented.”
Gates reiterates the dire consequences for the global economy later in the interview.
“We need a clear message about that,” Gates said starting at 26:52.
“It is really tragic that the economic effects of this are very dramatic. I mean, nothing like this has ever happened to the economy in our lifetimes. But … bringing the economy back and doing [sic] money, that’s more of a reversible thing than bringing people back to life. So we’re going to take the pain in the economic dimension, huge pain, in order to minimize the pain in disease and death dimension.”
However, this goes directly against the imperative to balance the benefits and costs of the screening, testing and treatment measures for each ailment – as successfully promulgated for years by, for example, the Choosing Wisely campaign – to provide the maximum benefit to individual patients and society as a whole.
Even more importantly, as noted in an April 1 article in OffGuardian, there may be dramatically more deaths from the economic breakdown than from COVID-19 itself.
“By all accounts, the impact of the response will be great, far-reaching, and long-lasting,”
Kevin Ryan wrote in the article. Ryan estimated that well over two million people will likely die from the sequelae of the lock-downs and other drastic measures to enforce ‘social distancing.’
Millions could potentially die from suicide, drug abuse, lack of medical coverage or treatment, poverty and lack of food access, on top of other predictable social, medical and public-health problems stemming from the response to COVID-19.
Gates and Anderson did not touch on any of those sequelae. Instead, they focused on rapidly ramping up testing and medical interventions for COVID-19.
Gates said at 30:29 in the interview that he and a large team are moving fast to test anti-virals, vaccines and other therapeutics and to bring them to market as quickly as possible.
The Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust with support from Mastercard and now others, created this therapeutic accelerator to really triage out [candidate therapeutics]…You have hundreds of people showing up and saying, ‘Try this, try that.’ So we look at lab assays, animal models, and so we understand which things should be prioritized for these very quick human trials that need to be done all over the world.”
The accelerator was launched March 10 with approximately $125 million in seed funding. Three days later Gates left Microsoft.
Not long before that, on January 23, Gates’s organization the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announced it will fund three programs to develop COVID-19 vaccines. These are the advancing of DNA-vaccine candidates against MERS and Lassa fever, the development of a “‘molecular clamp’ platform” that “enables targeted and rapid vaccine production against multiple viral pathogens,” and the manufacture and Phase 1 clinical study of an mRNA vaccine against COVID.
“The programmes will leverage rapid response platforms already supported by CEPI as well as a new partnership. The aim is to advance nCoV-2019 vaccine candidates into clinical testing as quickly as possible,” according to a news release.
Then at 32:50 in the video, Anderson asked whether the blood serum from people who have recovered from a COVID infection can be used to treat others.
“I heard you mention that one possibility might be treatments from the serum, the blood serum of people who had had the disease and then recovered. So I guess they’re carrying antibodies,” said Anderson. “Talk a bit about that and how that could work and what it would take to accelerate that.”
[Note that Anderson did not ask Gates about, instead, just letting most of the population – aside from people most vulnerable to serious illness from the infection, who should be quarantined — be exposed to COVID-19 and as a result very likely recover and develop life-long immunity. As at least one expert has observed, “as much as ninety-nine percent of active cases [of COVID-19] in the general population are ‘mild’ and do not require specific medical treatment” to recover.]
“This has always been discussed as, ‘How could you pull that off?’” replied Gates. “So people who are recovered, it appears, have very effective antibodies in their blood. So you could go, transfuse them and only take out white cells, the immune cells.”
However, Gates continued, he and his colleagues have dismissed that possibility because it’s “fairly complicated – compared to a drug we can make in high volume, you know, the cost of taking it out and putting it back in probably doesn’t scale as well.”
Then a few seconds later, at 33:45, Gates drops another bomb:
We don’t want to have a lot of recovered people […] To be clear, we’re trying – through the shut-down in the United States – to not get to one percent of the population infected. We’re well below that today, but with exponentiation, you could get past that three million [people or approximately one percent of the U.S. population being infected with COVID-19 and the vast majority recovering]. I believe we will be able to avoid that with having this economic pain.”
It appears that rather than let the population be exposed to the virus and most develop antibodies that give them natural, long-lasting immunity to COVID-19, Gates and his colleagues far prefer to create a vast, hugely expensive, new system of manufacturing and selling billions of test kits, and in parallel very quickly developing and selling billions of antivirals and vaccines.
And then, when the virus comes back again a few months later and most of the population is unexposed and therefore vulnerable, selling billions more test kits and medical interventions.
Right after that, at 34:14, Gates talked about how he sees things rolling out from there.
Eventually what we’ll have to have is certificates of who’s a recovered person, who’s a vaccinated person […] Because you don’t want people moving around the world where you’ll have some countries that won’t have it under control, sadly. You don’t want to completely block off the ability for people to go there and come back and move around. So eventually there will be this digital immunity proof that will help facilitate the global reopening up.”

In the October 2019 Event 201 novel-corona virus-pandemic simulation co-sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Economic Forum and a division of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a poll that was part of the simulation said that 65% of people in the U.S. would be eager to take a vaccine for COVID-19, “even if it’s experimental.”
This will be tremendously lucrative.
Vaccines are very big business: this Feb. 23 CNBC article, for example, describes the vaccine market as six times bigger than it was 20 years ago, at more than $35 billion annually today, and providing a $44 return for every $1 invested in the world’s 94 lowest-income countries.
Notably, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – which has an endowment of $52 billion – has given more than $2.4 billion to the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2000, according to a 2017 Politico article. (While over the same time frame countries have reduced their contributions to the world body, particularly after the 2008-2009 depression, and now account for less than one-quarter of the WHO’s budget.) The WHO is now coordinating approximately 50 groups around the world that are working on candidate vaccines against COVID-19.
The Politico article quotes a Geneva-based NGO representative as saying Gates is “treated liked a head of state, not only at the WHO, but also at the G20,” and that Gates is one of the most influential people in global health.
Meanwhile, officials around the world are doing their part to make sure everyone social distances, self-isolates and/or stays locked down.
For example, here’s Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, at her and Toronto Mayor John Tory’s March 30 press briefing:
“We find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic. We should expect some more people will get sick – and for some, sadly, will die. This is why it is so important to stay at home to reduce virus spread. And to protect front-line workers, healthcare workers and our essential workers, so they can continue to protect us. People shouldn’t have to die, people shouldn’t have to risk death taking care of us because others won’t practice social distancing or physical distancing.”
Yet look how close Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, is sitting to Haley Chazan, Senior Manager, Media Relations, for Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health of Ontario.
This was on Friday, March 27, just before the start of that day’s daily press conference by Dr. Williams and Ontario’s Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe:
They were sitting two seats, or just a couple of feet, apart. A short time later Chazan got up and stood even closer to Dr. Williams for a little while:
Dr. Williams and Chazan do not live together. Rather, Dr. Williams very likely knows – just as Gates knows – that there is little if any reason to worry about being in close contact with other people unless you or they are vulnerable to developing a severe illness from COVID-19. He surely knows, also, that if you contract COVID-19 and you’re otherwise healthy you’ll very likely have few symptoms, if any, and recover quickly. And that this exposure in fact is beneficial because in the process you will develop antibodies to the virus and have natural, long-lasting immunity to it.
Yet in the March 27 press conference, just like all the others he has participated in during the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Williams lectured the public about maintaining social distancing. He told people not to go outside on the coming weekend to enjoy the nice weather because, otherwise, they might walk past someone and not be two metres apart.
Dr. Williams is among the large cadre of powerful officials who’ve crashed the global economy by forcing tens of millions of small- and medium-sized businesses to close in the name of the need for forced, severe, social distancing and lock-downs.
They’ve shattered society, suspended most civil liberties and prohibited most activities and connections that keep people mentally and physically healthy. At the same time the officials have prioritized COVID-19 care over everything else and, as a result, severely limited billions of people’s access to life-saving healthcare services ranging from acquiring medication and blood transfusions to having organ transplants and cancer surgeries.

With some Western governments failing to follow the World Health Organisation’s advice on tackling coronavirus, right-wing figures in the US and UK are seeking to discredit the UN body as pro-China. But Britain and the US themselves are the WHO’s largest funders and among its major influencers.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is under attack from Western politicians ranging from US President Donald Trump to the UK Conservative Party’s former leader Iain Duncan Smith, in addition to some right-wing media outlets.
Trump said the WHO has “called it wrong” in responding to coronavirus and “seems to be very much biased towards China”.
Duncan Smith told Sky News: “I think the WHO has spent a lot of its time actually having a go at Western governments about the way they’ve behaved over this particular outbreak and nothing but quiet praise for the Chinese.”
His concerns were echoed by fellow Conservative MP, Bob Seely, a member of parliament’s Foreign Affairs Select Committee, who told the Mail on Sunday: “We are seeing the horrible damage that a pandemic can do while the WHO has soft-pedalled on China.” A senior British Cabinet source told the same paper that the WHO’s director-general was “a shield for Beijing”.
These claims deflect attention away from Trump and Boris Johnson’s own handling of the pandemic towards a more traditional enemy – the Chinese Communist Party. It comes as UK medical staff are criticising Johnson’s Conservative government for not supplying them with personal protective equipment (PPE) that adheres to WHO standards.
Johnson did little in the early stage of the coronavirus crisis to heed the advice of the WHO in terms of mass testing, procurement of PPE, ventilators and oxygen, leaving Britain dangerously unprepared for the pandemic.
At least 17 British medical staff have now died from coronavirus, including a 36-year-old nurse, and some of their bereaved relatives blame their deaths on the lack of proper PPE.
Democracy at the WHO
It is not the first time the WHO has been criticised for its response to an infectious disease. In 2014, the WHO was accused of responding too slowly to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, particularly in Guinea, which is a close ally of France.
Internal emails obtained by the Associated Press revealed that the WHO’s leadership were reluctant to call an emergency in case the countries affected by Ebola interpreted it as a “hostile act”. Guinean officials pressured the WHO to only report confirmed cases in order to “reassure expatriates working in the mining industry.”
This incident cast a bad light on the WHO’s outgoing director-general, Dr Margaret Chan, a Chinese medic born under British rule in Hong Kong, and in 2016 the WHO began a democratic process to appoint her successor.
Britain is often keen to secure leadership roles on UN bodies and the UK government put forward Dr David Nabarro, a British veteran of the international aid sector, as its candidate to succeed Chan.

Nabarro’s campaign secured endorsements from the then UK foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, who described him as a “superb fit for this job”. Jeremy Hunt, then health secretary, and Priti Patel, then development secretary, also endorsed Nabarro.
The UK government spent £101,000 financing Nabarro’s campaign, allowing him to travel the world, including a £6,188 stopover in Shanghai to tout his credentials at a WHO conference.
Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government entered its foreign minister, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in the race, and sponsored him to go on a similar world tour to Nabarro. Pakistan, France, Italy and Hungary also fielded their own candidates.
Perhaps surprisingly, the Ethiopian candidate received a glowing endorsement from Andrew Mitchell, Britain’s former international development secretary and Conservative MP, who claimed Tedros had the ability to “improve the health of billions of people around the world”.
The final ballot in May 2017 went down to a two-horse race between the Ethiopian and the Briton, with Tedros winning by 133 votes to 50.
With Tedros now in charge of the WHO, he could select his top team. Rather than punish Britain for running against him, among his most senior appointments was Jane Ellison, a British Conservative politician who had recently served as a public health minister in the UK government.

She was made deputy director-general of the WHO and is currently an executive director with the power to sign agreements with donors and allocate budgets. Out of the 20 most senior staff at the WHO, half are from Europe, the US or Canada, and only one is from China.
The UK went on to work closely with Tedros during the Ebola outbreak in North Kivu in the DRC from 2018-19, where Britain’s Department for International Development was praised by the WHO for being the largest donor to its relief efforts.
Such cooperation has only strengthened with the coronavirus outbreak, after Tedros appointed his old rival, the UK’s David Nabarro, as one of his six special envoys on Covid-19 in February 2020. In this role, Nabarro has urged countries to follow the WHO’s advice on how to handle the coronavirus crisis.
This presence of British government-approved figures such as Ellison and Nabarro at the top of the WHO is often overlooked by those seeking to portray the organisation as pro-China.
For example, a critique of the WHO published in the Mail on Sunday was written by Ian Birrell, a former speechwriter for David Cameron, in whose government Ellison had served as a health minister. Despite being very familiar with the Conservative Party’s leadership, Birrell omitted any mention of Ellison.
The Ethiopian angle
Many critics, including Birrell, have raised concerns that Tedros used to serve in a repressive regime which had close links to China. Birrell asked rhetorically:
“So why would Dr Tedros be so sympathetic to China? Perhaps it goes back to his time as a top Ethiopian politician. He served in senior roles under Meles Zenawi, who ran a brutal dictatorship with close ties to Beijing, which admired the regime’s authoritarian model of development.”
Tedros served from 2003 to 2016 in a repressive regime – that jailed political opponents and stifled dissent – as a health minister and later as foreign minister. However, it is harder to claim that Ethiopia in this time period was particularly pro-China. The regime received plenty of aid from the US and UK (£376-million in 2015) as well as China.

As Ethiopia’s foreign minister from 2012 to 2016, Tedros had a close relationship with the British government. A freedom of information request by Declassified UK found that a senior security official, Olly Robbins, met with Dr Tedros in February 2016 in Addis Ababa to “deepen UK cooperation with Ethiopia” on stopping migration from East Africa to Europe.
Not only was the UK keen to support a repressive regime’s border guards, it also spent more than £1-million training Ethiopian soldiers. This was despite the fact that a British-Ethiopian man, Andy Tsege, was being held on death row in Ethiopia for criticising the ruling party.
Tsege’s family criticised Boris Johnson, then Britain’s foreign secretary, for not doing enough to raise the matter with his opposite number, Tedros. Some suspected that the UK did not want to jeopardise trade and security ties with the East African country.
Taiwan
Another criticism levelled at the WHO has been its refusal to recognise Taiwan as a sovereign state, insisting of calling it a province of China to appease the regime in Beijing, and failing to heed its warnings about the spread of the coronavirus inside mainland China.
Dr Bruce Aylward, the WHO’s assistant director-general, dodged a journalist’s questions about Taiwan in a video interview by appearing to switch off the computer connection.

However, the UK government itself “does not recognise Taiwan as a state and has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan” – nor do the US and Australia. Only 14 members of the United Nations officially recognise Taiwan and it is not part of any UN agencies.
The WHO’s recent refusal to talk about Taiwan is particularly pertinent because the country is said to have sounded the alarm on the coronavirus sooner than Beijing. Taiwan claims it told the WHO on 31 December 2019 that medical staff in Wuhan had fallen ill, a sign of human-to-human transmission.
It is further alleged that the WHO ignored this tip from Taiwan, and it does not appear to have been until 23 January, when Wuhan went into lockdown, that the WHO announced that “human-to-human transmission is occurring”. Critics say this three-week delay in January allowed the virus time to spread to other countries.
Whilst this may be true, it took another two months before UK Prime Minister Johnson announced a partial lockdown on 23 March, by which point more than 300 people in Britain had died.
As Declassified UK has previously documented, Johnson did little in that two-month period to heed the advice of the WHO in terms of mass testing, procurement of PPE, ventilators and oxygen – delays which left his country unprepared for the pandemic.
It is not certain that had the WHO warned the world earlier in January, the UK would have used that extra time to prepare.
Follow the money
Last week, the British investigative magazine Private Eye asked why the WHO was “being so indulgent of China” and suggested its “kow-towing might just be related to its own precarious financial position, which makes it increasingly reliant on Beijing”. It said that the WHO’s largest funder, the US, was behind on its payments, and that “China, second-largest contributor, is more reliable”.
In fact, there are other countries and organisations, apart from the US, that give more money to the WHO than China.
When it comes to assessed contributions to the WHO, which are mandatory for member states and vary according to their wealth, China gave the third-largest amount in 2018-19, below the US and Japan. Germany, France and the UK were the next top donors.
The WHO also receives voluntary contributions from states, which can be much larger than their assessed contributions. Again, the US was the highest spender in this category, followed by the UK and Germany.
When assessed and voluntary contributions for 2018-19 are combined, China was the sixth largest state funder of the WHO, according to its press office.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome and Mastercard announced a new initiative yesterday to accelerate technologies designed to identify, assess, develop and scale treatments to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will evaluate new and repurposed drugs and biologics to treat patients with COVID-19 in the immediate term, and other viral pathogens in the future, according to a statement from the Gates Foundation.
As part of the initiative, the three partners committed to “equitable access, including making products available and affordable in low-resource settings.”
That’s an issue right now as healthcare systems struggle with access to testing kits and potentially high-cost therapeutics developed by private industry. The government agencies tasked with responding to the outbreak apparently lack the resources to engage in such an initiative and are relying on the private sector to help.
The immediate goal for the new accelerator is to catalyze the evaluation and development of new and repurposed drugs and biologics to treat patients with COVID-19.
Right now, there aren’t any broad-spectrum antivirals or immunotherapies available to combat the spread of emerging pathogens — and certainly none approved for use on COVID-19, according to the Gates Foundation statement.
Gates and Wellcome, a nonprofit foundation, are each contributing up to $50 million to the accelerator, with the Gates Foundation money pulled from its $100 million commitment to finance a COVID-19 response made in February.
“Viruses like COVID-19 spread rapidly, but the development of vaccines and treatments to stop them moves slowly,” said Mark Suzman, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in a statement. “If we want to make the world safe from outbreaks like COVID-19, particularly for those most vulnerable, then we need to find a way to make research and development move faster. That requires governments, private enterprise, and philanthropic organizations to act quickly to fund R&D.”
The new accelerator will work with the World Health Organization, government and private sector funders and other organizations, along with regulators and policy-setting institutions, according to a statement, and will focus on everything from drug pipeline development through manufacturing and expanding production and distribution.
For the Gates Foundation, the cross-disciplinary approach was one of the lessons learned from its approach to containing the Ebola outbreak in 2014.
According to a statement from the foundation, the accelerator will operate as a joint initiative of the funders and will pursue three different strategies. It will identify compounds and potential novel therapies, work with industry partners and coordinate with regulators to get treatments into market.
“This virus is an unprecedented global threat, and one for which we must propel international partnerships to develop treatments, rapid diagnostics, and vaccines. Science is moving at a phenomenal pace against COVID-19, but to get ahead of this epidemic we need greater investment and to ensure research co-ordination,” said Dr. Jeremy Farrar, director of Wellcome, in a statement. “The Therapeutics Accelerator will allow us to do this for potential treatments with support for research, development, assessment, and manufacturing. COVID-19 is an extremely challenging virus, but we’ve proved that through collaborating across borders we can tackle emerging infectious diseases.”

Ultra-rich philanthropists and their foundations have increasing influence on decision-making and are setting the global health and agriculture agenda in developing countries, according to a major study (pdf).
Using their immense wealth and influence with political and scientific elites, organisations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and others are promoting solutions to global problems that may undermine the UN and other international organisations, says the report by the independent Global Policy Forum, which monitors the work of UN bodies and global policymaking.

With assets of more than $360bn (£250bn), the world’s 27 largest foundations give roughly $15bn annually to charitable causes. Nineteen of the 27 are American and many are now looking to extend their influence to poorer countries, say the report’s authors.
Foundation spending on global development has increased from $3bn a year in the early 2000s to $10bn today. By far the largest donor, say the authors, is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which in 2012 gave $2.6bn. This compares with $1.2bn from the next nine largest US trusts.
In addition, 137 billionaires from 14 countries have now pledged to give to philanthropic causes. They include the former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg, the US filmmaker George Lucas and the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
“If these and more ultra-rich fulfil their pledges, many more billions of dollars will be made available for charitable purposes,” says the report, which was financed by Misereor and Brot für die Welt, two German church groups that work largely in Africa.
The study claims many foundations enable rich countries and their corporations to achieve their own ends in developing countries, from setting up public-private partnerships with pharmaceutical companies to promoting certain sorts of corporate farming and the use of biotechnology for health and agriculture.
The world’s largest philanthropic foundations
The authors ask whether the foundations are now sidelining governments and shifting influencing the work of international bodies. “Through the sheer size of their grant-making, personal networking and active advocacy, large global foundations have played an increasingly active role in shaping the agenda-setting and funding priorities of international organisations and governments.
“So far there has been a fairly willing belief among governments and international organisations in the positive role of philanthropy.” But, say the authors, a thorough assessment is now necessary because the wealthy may be skewing the priorities of the poor.
“They should analyse the intended and unintended risks and side-effects of their activities, particularly the fragmentation of global governance, the weakening of representative democracy … the prevailing practice of applying business logic to the provision of public goods.”
The authors say foundations have used their influence well to get governments to tackle poverty. “Their advocacy for global causes puts pressure on governments, and sometimes the private sector, to become more actively engaged.”
But this raises concerns about how they and their corporate partners may be taking over from the UN and weakening public health systems in developing countries. “As the UN accelerates its engagement with the business and corporate sector, as well as philanthropic foundations, it lacks the rules and tools needed to ensure it does not lose sight of its original mission.
“Through their multiple channels of influence, the Rockefeller and Gates foundations have been very successful in promoting their market-based and bio-medical approaches towards global health challenges in the research and health policy community – and beyond.”
Their strategy includes placing people in international organisations, and gaining privileged access to scientific, business and political elites.
For example, when Bill Gates visited Berlin to campaign for the Gavi Alliance (the vaccine alliance of governments, NGOs and companies set up with Gates and Rockefeller money), he met the German chancellor and the foreign, finance, development and health ministers.
“The Gates foundation has successfully positioned itself in the centre of a … community that is promoting market-based, techno-fix solutions to the complex global problems of hunger and malnutrition,” say the authors.
Leonora Diller, spokeswoman for the Gates foundation said: “The problems affecting the world’s poorest are complex and we believe that solving them requires the close collaboration of governments, NGOs, academic institutions and for-profit businesses. Governments and international organisations provide the leadership and resources.

“The private sector has access to life-saving innovations and we believe that the role of philanthropy is to take risks where others can’t or won’t. Our investments are substantial, but just one piece of the puzzle.”
According to the report, the Gates foundation is now the second largest donor to the World Health Organisation after the US, as well as one of the world’s largest single investors in biotechnology for farming and pharmaceuticals. But while the billions of dollars for research is welcomed in rich countries, its massive power to shift the agenda is questioned elsewhere.
“The mushrooming of global partnerships, particularly in the health sector, has led to isolated and often poorly coordinated solutions. These initiatives have not only contributed to the institutional weakening of the UN ands its specialised agencies but have undermined national development strategies,” it says.
“Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) states that, while Gavi has helped to lower prices of new and underused vaccines for eligible countries, the cost to fully immunise a child was 68 times more expensive in 2014 than it was in 2001.”
The report also questions why the Gates foundation invests heavily in companies like Monsanto and Bayer. “In addition to its grant-making activities, the Gates foundation has recently stepped up its support for the biotechnological industry directly.” In February, it took a $52m equity stake in CureVac, a German bio-pharmaceutical company.
“There is a revolving door between the Gates foundation and pharmaceutical corporations. Many of the foundation’s staff had held positions at pharmaceutical companies,” the report adds.

The study says: “Both Gates and the Rockefeller Foundation regard technological innovation and close cooperation with the food and agricultural industries as key to overcoming hunger … In 2006 they together launched the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra), based on the premise that hunger in Africa is mainly the result of a lack of technology and functioning markets. [This] changed the farming agenda in Africa,” say the authors.
Since then Gates has given more than $3bn to support 660 agricultural projects as well as several hundred million dollars for nutrition. “The vast majority of grants focus on Africa. However, more than 80% of the $669m to NGOs went to organisations based in the US and Europe, with only 4% going to Africa-based NGOs.”
The report claims Agra has been intervening directly in the formulation of African governments’ agricultural policies on issues like seeds and land. “Because of its focus on bio-technological farming methods, it has increasingly promoted GM seeds. Critics claim that under the guise of eliminating hunger in Africa, it is a tool to open African markets to US agri-buiness,” says the report.

Today our focus is on making better use of the resources that go into food production, and in particular reducing both post-harvest losses and retail- and consumer-level food waste.
“These are the biggest food security issues of our day, and, yes, we want to influence decisions so that more food ends up on tables and in mouths and far less of it in landfills, particularly as we want to see this done in a way that benefits smallholder farmers.”

Bill Gates has claimed that the US needs to have 10 more weeks of shutdown to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Writing in an op-ed for The Washington Post, Mr Gates said the country needs to unite around an approach in order to be successful.
Each state offers different advice and only five have stay-at-home orders in place, meaning residents can only leave the house for essential needs.
Mr Gates thinks this needs to change: “First, we need a consistent nationwide approach to shutting down. Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties haven’t shut down completely,” he wrote.
“In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals.”
Mr Gates added that “any confusion about this point will only extend the economic pain, raise the odds that the virus will return, and cause more deaths”.
The co-founder of Microsoft also argued that the amount of testing should increase, and praised New York’s responses to the virus, where they have increased their testing capacity to 20,000 people a day.
He praised Seattle’s self-swab testing, which means patients avoid the risk of infecting a medical professional, and wrote: “I hope this and other innovations in testing are scaled up across the country soon”.
Mr Gates also advocated for a vaccine to be developed within 18 months and praised the government for making deals with companies to prepare for manufacturing.
“It’s a great sign that the administration made deals this week with at least two companies to prepare for vaccine manufacturing. I hope more deals will follow,” he wrote.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the chief infectious disease expert leading the US response, echoed Mr Gates’s claims and said he doesn’t understand why states aren’t working together to tackle the virus.
Dr Fauci told CNN: “You know, the tension between federally mandated versus states’ rights to do what they want is something I don’t want to get into ... But if you look at what’s going on in this country, I just don’t understand why we’re not doing that.”

Under the leadership of Professor Kalipso Chalkidou, Professor of Practice in Global Health at Imperial, the Global Health and Development Group is a core partner of the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI), a global network of health policy makers, researchers, and development experts.
The network provides expert advice to decision-makers in LMICs to support them make evidence-informed decisions about how much public money to spend on healthcare and how that money can be spent as effectively as possible.
The iDSI works with policymakers and healthcare payers in low and middle-income countries, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa, to understand and respond to challenges such as sustainable health insurance and access to quality healthcare.

iDSI Director Professor Chalkidou, who also directs the Global Health program at the Center for Global Development, said: “With government and aid budgets under pressure, many developing countries are facing declines in health funding and are going to have to make difficult choices.

The network is already influencing policy in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, Tanzania, and Ghana – where there has been tangible progress toward national institutions being established to embed value-for-money into decision-making about what medicines, vaccines or other health services should be offered to the population, and how these could be procured in the most cost-effective way.
The network has supported Tanzania to prioritise its Essential Medicines List from 500 to 400 drugs, reducing spending on poor value items and freeing up resources to improve access to the most cost-effective medicines.
The network has also trained Kenya’s Health Benefits Package Committee on measuring the added value of a new health intervention compared to existing ones, piloted a local quality improvement initiative with hospital staff in Vietnam to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for pneumonia and brought together more than 100 policy makers working across Sub-Saharan Africa to share knowledge and best practice.
Improving health outcomes
Backed by Chinese, Thai, Norwegian and British governments, the iDSI, also receives funding from the Department for International Development, a UK government department responsible for administering overseas aid, and this renewed phase will see a stronger emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa. iDSI’s flagship countries include Kenya and Ghana, where global health funders will be departing and domestic health care spending is on the rise.
Additionally, many Sub-Saharan African countries are currently introducing national health insurance or coverage plans and making important decisions about what health services and technologies should be included in Universal Health Coverage offerings, where value for money considerations could make a huge difference in health outcomes.

Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who committed suicide in prison, managed to lure an astonishing array of rich, powerful and famous men into his orbit.

Few, though, compared in prestige and power to the world’s second-richest person, a brilliant and intensely private luminary: Bill Gates. And unlike many others, Mr. Gates started the relationship after Mr. Epstein was convicted of sex crimes.
Mr. Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, whose $100 billion-plus fortune has endowed the world’s largest charitable organization, has done his best to minimize his connections to Mr. Epstein. “I didn’t have any business relationship or friendship with him,” he told The Wall Street Journal last month.

In fact, beginning in 2011, Mr. Gates met with Mr. Epstein on numerous occasions — including at least three times at Mr. Epstein’s palatial Manhattan townhouse, and at least once staying late into the night, according to interviews with more than a dozen people familiar with the relationship, as well as documents reviewed by The New York Times.
Employees of Mr. Gates’s foundation also paid multiple visits to Mr. Epstein’s mansion. And Mr. Epstein spoke with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and JPMorgan Chase about a proposed multibillion-dollar charitable fund — an arrangement that had the potential to generate enormous fees for Mr. Epstein.

Over and over, Mr. Epstein managed to cultivate close relationships with some of the world’s most powerful men. He lured them with the whiff of money and the proximity to other powerful, famous or wealthy people — so much so that many looked past his reputation for sexual misconduct. And the more people he drew into his circle, the easier it was for him to attract others.

Mr. Gates and the $51 billion Gates Foundation have championed the well-being of young girls. By the time Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein first met, Mr. Epstein had served jail time for soliciting prostitution from a minor and was required to register as a sex offender.
Ms. Arnold said that “high-profile people” had introduced Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein and that they had met multiple times to discuss philanthropy.
“Bill Gates regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognizes it was an error in judgment to do so,” Ms. Arnold said. “Gates recognizes that entertaining Epstein’s ideas related to philanthropy gave Epstein an undeserved platform that was at odds with Gates’s personal values and the values of his foundation.”
The First Meeting
Two members of Mr. Gates’s inner circle — Boris Nikolic and Melanie Walker — were close to Mr. Epstein and at times functioned as intermediaries between the two men.
Ms. Walker met Mr. Epstein in 1992, six months after graduating from the University of Texas. Mr. Epstein, who was an adviser to Mr. Wexner, the owner of Victoria’s Secret, told Ms. Walker that he could land her an audition for a modeling job there, according to Ms. Walker. She later traveled to New York and stayed in a Manhattan apartment building that Mr. Epstein owned. After she graduated from medical school, she said, Mr. Epstein hired her as a science adviser in 1998.
Ms. Walker later met Steven Sinofsky, a senior executive at Microsoft who became president of its Windows division, and moved to Seattle to be with him. In 2006, she joined the Gates Foundation with the title of senior program officer.

At the foundation, Ms. Walker met and befriended Mr. Nikolic, a native of what is now Croatia and a former fellow at Harvard Medical School who was the foundation’s science adviser. Mr. Nikolic and Mr. Gates frequently traveled and socialized together.
Ms. Walker, who had remained in close touch with Mr. Epstein, introduced him to Mr. Nikolic, and the men became friendly.
Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates first met face to face on the evening of Jan. 31, 2011, at Mr. Epstein’s townhouse on the Upper East Side. They were joined by Dr. Eva Andersson-Dubin, a former Miss Sweden whom Mr. Epstein had once dated, and her 15-year-old daughter. (Dr. Andersson-Dubin’s husband, the hedge fund billionaire Glenn Dubin, was a friend and business associate of Mr. Epstein’s. The Dubins declined to comment.)
The gathering started at 8 and lasted several hours, according to Ms. Arnold, Mr. Gates’s spokeswoman. Mr. Epstein subsequently boasted about the meeting in emails to friends and associates. “Bill’s great,” he wrote in one, reviewed by The Times.

Mr. Gates, in turn, praised Mr. Epstein’s charm and intelligence. Emailing colleagues the next day, he said: “A very attractive Swedish woman and her daughter dropped by and I ended up staying there quite late.”
Mr. Gates soon saw Mr. Epstein again. At a TED conference in Long Beach, Calif., attendees spotted the two men engaged in private conversation.

Later that spring, on May 3, 2011, Mr. Gates again visited Mr. Epstein at his New York mansion, according to emails about the meeting and a photograph reviewed by The Times.
The photo, taken in Mr. Epstein’s marble-clad entrance hall, shows a beaming Mr. Epstein — in blue-and-gold slippers and a fleece decorated with an American flag — flanked by luminaries. On his right: James E. Staley, at the time a senior JPMorgan executive, and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers. A Vast Charitable Fund
Around that time, the Gates Foundation and JPMorgan were teaming up to create the Global Health Investment Fund. Its goal was to provide “individual and institutional investors the opportunity to finance late-stage global health technologies that have the potential to save millions of lives in low-income countries.”
As the details of the fund were being hammered out, Mr. Staley told his JPMorgan colleagues that Mr. Epstein wanted to be brought into the discussions, according to two people familiar with the talks. Mr. Epstein was an important JPMorgan customer, holding millions of dollars in accounts at the bank and referring a procession of wealthy individuals to become clients of the company.
Mr. Epstein pitched an idea for a separate charitable fund to JPMorgan officials, including Mr. Staley, and to Mr. Gates’s adviser Mr. Nikolic. He envisioned a vast fund, seeded with the Gates Foundation’s money, that would focus on health projects around the world, according to five people involved in or briefed on the talks, including current and former Gates Foundation and JPMorgan employees. In addition to the Gates money, Mr. Epstein planned to round up donations from his wealthy friends and, hopefully, from JPMorgan’s richest clients.
Mr. Epstein thought he could personally benefit. He circulated a four-page proposal that included a suggestion that he be paid 0.3 percent of whatever money he raised, according to one person who saw the proposal. If Mr. Epstein had raised $10 billion, for example, that would have amounted to $30 million in fees.
Ms. Arnold said Mr. Gates and the foundation had been unaware that Mr. Epstein had been seeking any fee. She said Mr. Epstein “did propose to Bill Gates and then foundation officials ideas that he promised would unleash hundreds of billions for global health-related work.”

In late 2011, at Mr. Gates’s instruction, the foundation sent a team to Mr. Epstein’s townhouse to have a preliminary talk about philanthropic fund-raising, according to three people who were there. Mr. Epstein told his guests that if they searched his name on the internet they might conclude he was a bad person but that what he had done — soliciting prostitution from an underage girl — was no worse than “stealing a bagel,” two of the people said.

Some of the Gates Foundation employees said they had been unaware of Mr. Epstein’s criminal record and had been shocked to learn that the foundation was working with a sex offender. They worried that it could seriously damage the foundation’s reputation.
In early 2012, another Gates Foundation team met Mr. Epstein at his mansion. He claimed that he had access to trillions of dollars of his clients’ money that he could put in the proposed charitable fund — a figure so preposterous that it left his visitors doubting Mr. Epstein’s credibility.
Flying to Florida
Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein kept seeing each other. Ms. Arnold would not say how many times the two had met.
In March 2013, Mr. Gates flew on Mr. Epstein’s Gulfstream plane from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey to Palm Beach, Fla., according to a flight manifest. Ms. Arnold said Mr. Gates — who has his own $40 million jet — hadn’t been aware it was Mr. Epstein’s plane.
Six months later, Mr. Nikolic and Mr. Gates were in New York for a meeting related to Schrödinger, a pharmaceutical software company in which Mr. Gates had a large investment. On that trip, Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates met for dinner and discussed the Gates Foundation and philanthropy, Ms. Arnold said.

And in October 2014, Mr. Gates donated $2 million to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab. University officials described the gift in internal emails as having been “directed” by Mr. Epstein. Ms. Arnold said, “There was no intention, nor explicit ask, for the funding to be controlled in any manner by Epstein.”
Soon after, the relationship between Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates appears to have cooled. The charitable fund that had been discussed with the Gates Foundation never materialized. Mr. Epstein complained to an acquaintance at the end of 2014 that Mr. Gates had stopped talking to him, according to a person familiar with the discussion.
The relationship, however, wasn’t entirely severed. At least two senior Gates Foundation officials maintained contacts with Mr. Epstein until late 2017, according to former foundation employees.
Ms. Arnold said the foundation was not aware of any such contact. “Over time, Gates and his team realized Epstein’s capabilities and ideas were not legitimate and all contact with Epstein was discontinued,” she said.
Days before Mr. Epstein hanged himself in a Manhattan jail cell on Aug. 10, he amended his will and named Mr. Nikolic as a fallback executor in the event that one of the two primary executors was unable to serve. (Mr. Nikolic has declined in court proceedings to serve as executor.)

In 2014, the #GatesFoundation funded tests of experimental HPV vaccines, developed by GSK and Merck, on 23,000 young girls in remote Indian provinces. Approximately 1,200 suffered severe side effects, including autoimmune and fertility disorders. Seven died. Indian government investigations charged that Gates funded researchers committed pervasive ethical violations: pressuring vulnerable village girls into the trial, bullying parents, forging consent forms, and refusing medical care to the injured girls. Why Sweden may have lower infection rates.
Introduction: This program supplements and recapitulates both FTR #912 and AFA #39. In turn, several other, overlapping programs should be examined to flesh out one’s understanding of the phenomena discussed here, including: FTR #‘s 606, 682 and 686, as well as AFA #16.
Central to our analysis is a look at an excerpt from testimony before a House appropriations subcommittee that was drawing up the defense budget for the following year. (The hearings were in 1969.) The testimony discusses the possibility of using genetic engineering to produce a disease that would be “refractory” to the immune system. This is virtually the clinical definition of AIDS. It is worth noting that the project was funded, and just such a disease—AIDS—appeared in just the time frame posited. It is also worth noting that, in the 2002 edition of A Higher Form of Killing, this passage is omitted!!

As long ago as 1962, forty scientists were employed at the U.S. Army biological warfare laboratories on full-time genetics research. ‘Many others,’ it was said, ‘appreciate the implications of genetics for their own work.’ The implications were made more specific that genetic engineering could solve one of the major disadvantages of biological warfare, that it is limited to diseases which occur naturally somewhere in the world. ‘Within the next 5 to 10 years, it would probably be possible to make a new infective micro-organism which could differ in certain important respects from any known disease-causing organisms. Most important of these is that it might be refractory to the immunological and therapeutic processes upon which we depend to maintain our relative freedom from infectious disease.’ [Italics are Mr. Emory’s.] The possibility that such a ‘super germ’ may have been successfully produced in a laboratory somewhere in the world in the years since that assessment was made is one which should not be too readily cast aside. . .

Purebred Northern Europeans possess a hereditary immunity to infection by HIV, a gene (CCR5Delta 32) that conferred immunity to the Black Death, long believed to have been bubonic plague. Bubonic plague was a major focal point of Third Reich biological weapons research, stemming from SS chief Heinrich Himmler’s interest in that disease.
Disguised as a cancer research program, Nazi Germany’s plague research was presided over by Kurt Blome, the deputy surgeon general of the Third Reich. Blome went to work for the U.S. under Project Paperclip (also known as Operation Paperclip.) We wonder if the Nazi research into bubonic plague and the emergence of an immune-destroying disease to which only pure-bred Northern Europeans–“Aryans”–were immune might have been the outgrowth of Nazi-inspired U.S. biological weapons research stemming from Paperclip?
Another development in that context is noteworthy:
When the U.S. officially “gave up” biological warfare research, Fort Detrick–the military’s top bw research facility, was officially turned over to the National Cancer Institute’s Viral Cancer Research Project. Featuring veterans of the U.S. biological warfare research program, the NCI’s VCP was implemented by Litton Bionetics, a biotechnology subsidiary of Litton Industries, a major defense contractor. The National Cancer Institute’s Viral Cancer Research Project was at the epicenter of U.S. research into AIDS. We strongly suspect that this was a recapitulation of the Third Reich’s use of “cancer research.”
In both FTR #912 and AFA #39, we highlighted Bayer’s projected purchase of Monsanto.
We engage in a line of inquiry that is speculative in nature, evaluating the possibility that companies descended from the I.G. Farben German chemical cartel may absorb Monsanto, the firm noted for its development of genetically modified organisms.
Specifically, Bayer and BASF figured in the reported maneuvering for Monsanto. The deal has passed American anti-trust regulators, with BASF purchasing some $9 billion in former Bayer assets to permit the deal to go forward.
Against the background of the remarkable Bormann capital network’s effective control of the firms that descended from I.G. Farben, we ruminate about the possibility of genetically engineered binary pathogens being included in the food supply available to much of the world’s population.
Available information highlights possible Underground Reich maneuvering to gain control of firms marketing foodstuffs to middle, lower middle and working class people. This speculation, in turn, is set against the background of information strongly suggesting that AIDS was deliberately developed.
In the context of the purchase of food-producing companies, we note J.A.B Holdings and it’s associated Reimann family.
They are owned by a secretive group of German billionaires, mostly related to each other. This group owns (outright or majority) a rather shocking number of major American brands, including Peets Coffee, Panera Bread, Jimmy Choo Shoes, Dougwe Eberts Coffee, and Krispy Kreme Donuts! They appear to be making a major move to dominate the U.S., and perhaps global, coffee industry.
They also own part of 3G, the massive Brazilian holding company (with one of the three heads having the last name Lemann, and the other having Hermann as a middle name). (This is a focal point of FTR #912.)

3G owns Inbev (dominant player in the world’s liquor industry), Heinz, Kraft, and Burger King, who they quickly moved to Canada and merged with Tim Hortons, a massive Canadian restaurant chain, for tax breaks. They also own the largest logistics/railroad company in South America and its largest retail shopping company. So, between their interests in JAB and 3G, this one family has their tentacles into a ridiculous amount of commerce.
Like many German corporate citizens, they make their headquarters in Luxembourg.

As discussed in AFA #39, the Nazis began researching toxic agents on apes and then moved on to humans—inmates in concentration camps. AIDS results from a monkey virus that eventually jumped to humans as well. Does the progression in the Nazi death camps of testing on apes to testing on humans have any relationship with the progression of a simian virus to infection of humans? Might the creation of AIDS have stemmed from Nazi research? Is it an accident that the hereditary immunity from HIV infection is only present in the white race, and [according to some sources] Northern Europeans in particular? Is it an accident that people of African extraction are particularly susceptible to HIV infection?
Dr. Franz Liesau Zaccharias was the Abwehr agent who obtained the apes for the Nazi medical experiments. He was badly wanted by Western intelligence after the war. Why?! Western intelligence agencies certainly didn’t need anyone to teach them how to obtain apes from Africa. Experimenting on animals is not a war crime. The suspicion here is that he had discovered something of value during his primate work. Evidence also suggests that he remained part of The Underground Reich.
Among the diseases that Liesau Zacharias’ animals were used for testing was “the plague”! Did the Nazis note that some people appeared to be immune to infection with plague? Were tissue and/or sera samples taken and preserved for further study? Was this in any way connected to the eventual evolution of the CCR5-delta 32 gene as a hereditary protection against infection by HIV? Is it possible that Liesau Zacharias was actually targeted for recruitment by the U.S. for Project Paperclip? Did Liesau Zacharias experience an outbreak of immunodeficiency among his primates awaiting shipment to Germany? Might such an outbreak have been due to SIV? Did Liesau Zacharias take tissue and sera samples from infected primates? Might such a development have been related to his importance to the Allies?

. . . . As for Dr. Blome, he was seen as a highly desirable recruit for Operation Paperclip. Blome allegedly knew more about bubonic plague research than anyone else in the world. But, given his former position in Hitler’s inner circle, coupled with the fact that Blome had worn the Golden Party Badge, bringing him to America as part of Operation Paperclip remained too difficult for the U.S. Army to justify. But as the Cold War gained momentum and intense suspicion of the Soviets increased, even someone like Kurt Blome would eventually be deemed eligible for Operation Paperclip. . . .
7a. In both FTR #912 and AFA #39 we discussed leading GMO producer Monsanto’s sale to Bayer. We noted that both Bayer and BASF (the firm viewed as a probable purchaser of Monsanto assets to be spun-off to conform to anti-trust requirements) are controlled by the remarkable and deadly Bormann flight capital organization.
Some $9 billion in assets are, indeed, to be sold to BASF. This will still leave them under the control of the Bormann group and the Underground Reich.
“U.S. Forces Germany’s Bayer to Shed $9 Billion in Ag Business in Biggest Ever AntiTrust Sell-Off” by Dan Mangan; CNBC; 5/29/2018.
Drug-maker Bayer, agreeing to the largest divestiture in American antitrust enforcement history, will sell agricultural businesses and assets worth about $9 billion to chemical giant BASF, clearing the way for approval of its $66 billion acquisition of Monsanto, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.
The assets include Bayer’s canola, soybean and vegetable seed businesses, as well as its Liberty herbicide business, all of which currently compete with Monsanto products.
Bayer also agreed to certain “structural divestitures” and to sell off “certain intellectual property and research capabilities, including ‘pipeline’ R&D projects,” according to the Justice Department.
In revealing the settlement it reached with Bayer, the department said the sell-off will “preserve competition threatened by Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto.
Without the divestiture, the department said, the “merger is unlawful.”
Germany-based Bayer and St. Louis-based Monsanto are two of the world’s biggest agricultural companies, and currently compete against one another to sell farmers seed and crop protection products, the department noted. BASF is the largest chemical producer in the world. . . .
7b. The I.G. Farben company, a core element of the Third Reich, was central to Reichsleiter Martin Bormann’s plans to secret Germany’s wealth abroad. Note, also, I.G. Farben’s dominance of the European chemical industry, and the opinion of Dr. von Schnitzler that technical dependence on I.G. facilities would continue after the war. (To learn more about I.G. . . . I.G. Farben was a formidable ally for Reichsleiter Bormann in his plans for the postwar economic rebirth of Germany. In a telephone conversation with Dr. von Schnitzler, Bormann asked what would the loss of factories in France and the other occupied countries mean to German industry in general and to I.G. in particular. Dr. von Schnitzler said he believed the technical dependence of these countries on I.G. would be so great that despite German defeat I.G., in one way or another, could regain its position of control of the European chemical business. ‘They will need the constant technical help of I.G.’s scientific laboratories as they do not own appropriate installations within themselves.’ . . .
7c. Bormann and Schmitz then discussed I.G.’s prospects for the postwar period. The cozy relationship with powerful elements within the power elites of the Western allies was foreseen by Schmitz as boding well for the company’s future. Schmitz’s predictions were relatively accurate. Neither Schmitz nor any of the I.G. Farben executives were severely punished and the firm’s three successor firms carried on effectively in the postwar period.

. . . .The Reichsleiter asked Schmitz his views of the future. Schmitz replied, ‘The occupation armies will be understanding in the West, but certainly not in the East. I have instructed all Farben administrators and technicians to come to the West, where they can be of use in resuming our operations once the disturbances of 1945 come to a halt.’ Schmitz added that, while general bomb damage to the I.G. plants was about 25 percent of capacity, some were untouched. He mentioned speaking with Field Marshal Model, who was commanding the defenses of the Ruhr. ‘Model had planned to turn our Bayer-Leberkusen pharmaceutical factory into an artillery base, but he agreed to make it an open, undefended factory. Hopefully, we will get it back untouched.’ ‘What about your board of directors and the essential executives? If they are held by the occupation authorities, can I.G. continue?’ Bormann asked. ‘We can continue. We have an operational plan for such a contingency, which everyone understands. However, I don’t believe our board members will be detained too long. Nor will I. But we must go through a procedure of investigation before release, so I have been told by our N.W. 7 people who have excellent contacts in Washington.’ . . .
7d. The broadcast details the profound relationship between I.G. Farben and the government of the Third Reich. Of particular utility to the Bormann flight capital program was I.G. Farben’s elaborate infrastructure in foreign countries. Note that, as is seen here, I.G. Farben was inextricably linked with both the government of the Third Reich and with the Nazi party itself. Of particular significance is the N.W.7 office and its control by Martin Bormann.

This department was staffed with men of recognized ability in all branches of business and science. It was under the direction of Dr. Max Ilgner, nephew of Hermann Schmitz, I.G.’s president, who was known throughout the industrial world as ‘the master of financial camouflage.’ [Emphasis added.] Farben had offices and representatives in 93 countries, and no social gathering of businessmen was too small to be covered by an N.W.7 representative, whose reports on market conditions, factory installations, raw-material supplies, and research were transmitted immediately to Berlin and Dr. Ilgner. In the United States, N.W.7 operated through the firm of Chemnyco, Inc., an American-formed subsidiary. Chemnyco sent tremendous amounts of information ranging from photographs and blue prints to detailed descriptions of entire industrial complexes and secret processes. . . .”
7e. Of particular importance for this discussion is the fact that I.G. used German military conquest to gain effective functional control of the chemical industry of the continent. In paragraph 13, we noted Georg von Scnitzler’s prediction that I.G.’s technical dominance would result in the postwar perpetuation of this control. As we will see, this control was maintained. Note the role of the N.W.7 Farben espionage organization in Bormann’s plans for the secreting of Nazi monies abroad.

This huge organization functioned as a manufacturing and research arm of the German government, with the responsibility of discovering all possible means of increasing the military power of Germany. More than RM 4.25 billion was invested in new plants, mines, and power installations, with other millions going into new research facilities. . . . So close had Farben become to the government that I.G. always knew in advance all invasions planned by Hitler. It was to supply the materials necessary to each conquest, and when a land had been overrun and subjugated, the Farben experts would handle the consolidation and organization of the industrial facilities as additional supply sources for the German armed forces. As German troops swept across Europe and Hitler proclaimed his vision of a thousand-year Third Reich, I.G. Farben also dreamed of world empire. This was outlined with clarity in a document called Neuordnung, or ‘New Order,’ that was accompanied by a letter of transmittal to the Ministry of Economics. It declared that a new order for the chemical industry of the world should supplement Hitler’s New Order. Therefore, the document stated, Farben was fitting future industrial plans into such a framework. . . . I.G. Farben was the major chemical firm on the Continent, and as each country fell to Germany its acquisitions of chemical and dyestuff companies were enormous. I.G. also increased its investments in these by RM 7 billion. [Emphasis added.]
. . . .The close relationship of Farben to the Third Reich leadership was underscored in other ways. I.G.’s leading officials assisted in the formulation and execution of economic policies of government; its president was a member of the Reichstag; its leading scientist was a chief assistant to Hermann Goering under the Four-Year Plan; its statisticians and economists prepared intelligence for the Nazi High Command; scores of its technicians were at any given time on loan to the air and war ministries.
. . . The contact men of N.W.7 throughout the world were called the I.G. Verbindungsmanner, the liaison officers between Farben back in Germany and the branches elsewhere. These I.G. Verbindungsmanner, as well as all other key Farben representatives working beyond the borders of the Third Reich, were members of the National Socialist German Workers Party. . . . So now Martin Bormann had at his command not only the Auslands-Organisation but also the I.G. Verbindungsmanner of Farben, which could be counted on to heed his orders when it was time to disperse the commercial assets of the Third Reich. . . .
7f. More about how the vast international operations of the I.G. Farben firm and its various subsidiary operations was a principal element of the Bormann organization. I.G. Farben chief Hermann Schmitz discussed I.G.’s involvement with the Bormann program.

. . . . In testimony later given to Nuremberg investigators, Schmitz praised Bormann for the way he had directed the distribution of German assets around the world. His own Farben organization had, of course, contributed to the success of the operation. Every regional representative working for Hermann Schmitz was an exceptional businessman, or he would not have been with I.G. All had contributed sound advice in their areas of competence, the regions of the world where they represented Farben while keeping an eye on the subsidiaries of the parent concern and the 700 hidden corporations they controlled. They had provided assistance and continuing guidance in establishing the 750 new companies created on order of Bormann, who wanted more than hidden assets; Bormann wanted the money and patents and technicians put to work to create even greater assets that would bolster Germany in the postwar years. In their meeting in the chancellery, both men checked over the figures of sums disbursed, and they were accurate to the pfennig. . . .
7g. As forecast by Dr. Scheid in the August 10, 1944 meeting, the corporate allies of the major German corporations, including and especially those of I.G. Farben, proved to be of great value to the uccess of the Bormann flight capital program.

Powerful friends of the Bormann organization in all Western countries, including those sprinkled in control points throughout the administration in Washington and in the financial and brokerage businesses of Wall Street, the City of London, and the Paris establishment, did not wish a coordinated drive to get at these external German assets. They had understandable reasons, if you overlook morality: the financial benefits for cooperation (collaboration had become an old-hat term with the war winding down) were very enticing, depending on one’s importance and ability to be of service to the organization and the 750 corporations they were secretly manipulating, to say nothing of the known multinationals such as I.G. Farben, Thyssen A.G., and Siemens; and, as a second reason, the philosophy of free enterprise and preservation of private property. . . . (Ibid.; p. 156.)
7h. Note the postwar resuscitation of I.G. Farben, in the form of the “Big Three” successor firms that grew out Farben. Although officially broken up at the end of World War II, I.G. Farben continued functioning in new form. Recent mergers (such as the 1996 merger of I.G. cartel affiliates Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz to form Novartis) indicate a new coming together of the old components of I.G. Again, pay close attention to the relationship between these companies and the Bormann capital network.

. . . . By 1956, the three major multinationals (Hoechst, BASF, and Bayer) reshaped from the 159 companies within Germany that had comprised I.G. Farben were generating record profits for the original 450 major Farben stockholders, who had organized themselves into the I.G. Farben Stockholders Protective committee in Bonn. The Big Three went on expanding, tripling capitalization in 1956 from investment funds that poured in from the interlocking companies established in safe haven countries by Martin Bormann and Hermann Schmitz. There was a return, more vigorous than ever, of the huge, monolithic industrial multinationals that dominated the German economy before and during World War II. . . .

. . . . Each of these three spinoffs from I.G. Farben today does more business individually than did Farben at its zenith, when its corporate structure covered 93 countries. BASF and Bayer individually boast worldwide sales of nearly $10 billion annually, while Hoechst, now the world’s largest chemical company, generated $16.01 billion in worldwide sales in 1980. Each does more business than E.I. du Pont de Nemours, with sales of $9.4 billion. The United States is, of course, the major market, one into which these German corporations continue to pour investment money for both new capital construction and corporate takeovers. They are owned by a secretive group of German billionaires, mostly related to each other. This group owns (outright or majority) a rather shocking number of major American brands, including Peets Coffee, Panera Bread, Jimmy Choo Shoes, Dougwe Eberts Coffee, and Krispy Kreme Donuts! They also own part of 3G, the massive Brazilian holding company (with one of the three heads having the last name Lemann, and the other having Hermann as a middle name). 3G owns Inbev (dominant player in the world’s liquor industry), Heinz, Kraft, and Burger King, who they quickly moved to Canada and merged with Tim Hortons, a massive Canadian restaurant chain, for tax breaks. They also own the largest logistics/railroad company in South America and its largest retail shopping company. So, between their interests in JAB and 3G, this one family has their tentacles into a ridiculous amount of commerce.
Like many German corporate citizens, they make their headquarters in Luxembourg.

After building a coffee empire ranging from hipster Stumptown Coffee Roasters to single-serve mainstay Keurig, the Reimanns’ JAB Holding investment company wants its growing stable of consumer brands to add some high-calorie oomph: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc.
The $1.35 billion deal, announced Monday, puts the intensely private Reimann clan — Wolfgang, Stefan, Renate and Matthias — on a potential collision course with Krispy Kreme’s rival of the moment, the mighty Starbucks Corp.
It also trains a spotlight on JAB, whose stewardship of the Reimann fortune has drawn comparisons to 3G Capital, the Brazilian private equity giant run by the billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann. JAB, run by a trio of trusted Reimann advisers, is coming off a four-year acquisition spree in which it spent about $30 billion taking controlling stakes in Jacobs Douwe Egberts, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Caribou Coffee, Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Espresso House and Baresso Coffee.
“They’ve been slowly amassing a pretty big umbrella of breakfast- and coffee-oriented brands, and so Krispy Kreme slides underneath that umbrella pretty easily,” said Will Slabaugh, an analyst at Stephens Inc.
…The four Reimanns each have a net worth of $3.3 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. A fifth sibling, Andrea Reimann-Ciardelli, sold her stake in JAB in 2003 and has a $1.2 billion net worth. Seeking a favorable tax environment for the Reimanns, Harf moved their family offices to Vienna from Ludwigshafen, Germany, in 2006. The family traded their German passports for Austrian ones.
For now, coffee is a small part of Krispy Kreme’s business. Almost 90 percent of its revenue came from doughnuts last year. Compare that with Dunkin’ Donuts, which gets most of its sales from coffee. Dunkin’ too has been cited as a possible JAB takeover target, though the firm may take its time before making such a deal, Slabaugh said.
“They probably want to swallow an acquisition like this for a while before looking at something like Dunkin’,” he said.

Just as they wish it to be, you have probably have never heard of the Reimann family. Chances are however that you have come across the products of their empire multiple times a day; maybe it was a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, Durex condoms, Peet’s coffee, a Mondelez snack or Calvin Klein fragrances. On Monday, the family’s conglomerated announced it will pay $13.9 billion in cash to add yet another well-known product to its portfolio, Keurig Green Mountain, maker of home and office coffee brewing systems. The offer was a 78% premium to where it had traded on Friday, and the news sent the stock soaring. (The company’s founder, Bob Stiller, saw his fortune jump nearly $300 million today but he is still worth well less than he was at the stock’s peak).
The siblings are decedents of German chemist Ludwig Reimann, who in 1828 joined Johann Adam Benckiser, and his namesake company in Ludwigshafen, Germany. By marrying one of Benckiser’s daughters, Reimann ended up inheriting the entire company. His great-grandson Albert Reimann took the reins in 1952, and decided to steer the company in a new direction, adding consumer goods to its business. When he died in 1984, his nine adopted children, none of whom had ever worked for the business or had any role in its operations, each inherited 11.1% of John A. Benckiser (JAB S.e.r.l.).
The lack of involvement is allegedly part of the family policy, which also includes signing a codex on one’s 18th birthday pledging to stay out of the public as much as possible, thus making them one of the most private billionaire families.
Five of the original nine siblings have divested from JAB, selling their stakes to the remaining four. Wolfgang, Matthias, Stefan and Renate together now own 95% of the company, which they hold through family offices based in Vienna. Andrea Reimann-Ciadelli, now an American citizen living in New Hampshire, sold her stake in 2003 for close to $1 billion and is the lowest ranking family member one the Forbes Billionaires List. The other sellers are believed to have been bought out in the late 90’s to unknown, but probably lower, amounts.
…The explicit aim of the latest deal according to the press releases was to create the world’s largest pure-play coffee company. With the Keuring Green Mountain Deal announced on Monday, JAB will have succeeded in doing just that, and will pass Nestlé in terms of global annual revenue for coffee. Be as secretive as you may, it’s hard to escape the headlines if you are making deals to take over an industry.

If 3G moves to top JAB’s $7.5 billion offer for Panera, it would put two of the world’s largest PE firms in direct competition for what is likely the first time.
JAB and 3G have been seen as allies. For example, Olivier Goudet, JAB’s chief executive, is chair of 3G’s Anheuser-Busch InBev.
The two firms have also invested in each other’s deals, sources close to the firms said.
“The idea of them being in combat with each other is really unusual,” a source who’s an investment banker said.
“Given that they invest in each other’s deals, it would be like going to war with your neighbor,” the banker said.
JAB, the investment vehicle for the reclusive billionaire Reimann family, of Germany, signed a $315-a-share cash merger agreement with Panera last week. Panera shares closed Monday at $313.30.
It was an exclusive sales process whereby Panera did not shop itself to other suitors, an investment banker said.
Both JAB and 3G are on a global buying spree. They have a similar strategy of investing in a space and expanding their businesses via acquisition.

Though 3G Capital is a PE firm, it doesn’t raise money in the normal way as most of the private equity firms do. It prefers to get huge lots of money from the wealthiest families in the world. Lemann and his associates Carlos Alberto, Sicupira and Marcel have pooled up big lots of money from over three dozen super rich individuals and the most wealthiest families in the world.
The world’s well-known fund manager William Ackman also recently invested in 3G Capital. Other major investors include Colombia’s Santo Domingo family, tennis player Roger Federer from Switzerland and JAB Holdings, which handles Germany’s Reimann family assets.

Did Bayer buy a lemon? That’s probably one of the questions the company executives and shareholders are probably asking themselves after a week of plummeting stock valuations following a wave a lawsuits directed at Bayer’s recently acquired Monsanto for $63 billion. As the following article articles, Bayer’s share prices dropped 10 percent on Monday following a California jury that awarded $289 million to a man who sued Monsanto after getting cancer following years of heavy use of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide despite assurances of its safety, opening the floodgates to potentially thousands of other similar lawsuits.
Then, on Wednesday, the California Supreme Court turned down an attempt by Bayer to keep Roundup off the list of known carcinogens. That knocked another 6 percent off of Bayer’s share price and Bayer’s stock is now at a five year low.
But the woes don’t stop there. Bayer/Monsanto was also just hit with a new class action lawsuit by farmers in Arkansas and South Dakota over Dicamba, an alternative herbicide produced by Monsanto and seen as a potential successor to Roundup.
Also, it looks like Brazil might ban glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup.
Oh, and it turns out researchers have been elevated levels of glyphosate in a wide variety of children’s cereal products. So Bayer is potentially looking at lawsuits involving exposing children to carcinogens. Plus, if dangerous levels of glyphosate are indeed found in cereals, you can be sure it’s going to be found in all sorts of other food products that have yet to be discovered.
So you have to wonder if this is a surprise for Bayer or was expected when they agreed to pay $63 billion for a company that appears to be a lawsuit machine at this point:

Bayer stock continues to slide in the wake of last week’s bombshell verdict on the carcinogenic nature of Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller.
Bayer bought Monsanto earlier this year for $63 billion. Roundup’s active ingredient is a herbicide called glyphosate, which a jury last week decided was responsible for the cancer of former groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson—a verdict that quickly lopped 10% off Bayer’s share price.
Glyphosate’s responsibility for causing cancer is a deeply contentious issue. The World Health Organization thinks the substance is dangerous. However, the European Union decided in 2015 that it is not carcinogenic, the Environmental Protection Agency said last year that it probably doesn’t cause cancer, and Bayer continues to argue that its newly acquired product is safe—it’s appealing the Johnson ruling.
But on Wednesday, the California Supreme Court turned down Bayer’s attempt to keep Roundup’s name off a list of known carcinogenic chemicals.
Bayer’s share price fell 6.1% on Thursday, following the Californian decision. So far, it has lost more than 18% of its value since the Johnson verdict, and is now lower than it has been for more than five years.
The negative sentiment can also be traced to class action lawsuits that the company is facing in the U.S. over its Dicamba herbicide. According to Bloomberg, Arkansas and South Dakota farmers who are suing Bayer/Monsanto say Dicamba harmed crops adjacent to those on which it was sprayed—it’s only supposed to be applied to plants that are engineered for resistance to Dicamba.

So it’s looking like Bayer paid $63 billion for a legal nightmare scenario. Again, was this kind of legal liability seen as a real possibility when they made the purchase or a big surprise? Because if it was a big surprise, well, that’s unfortunate for Bayer but oh well.
But if this legal nightmare was expected, you have to wonder if Bayer also expected to be able to fend off these legal challenges and this is all part of the plan. Or was the expectation inside Bayer that acquisition of Monsanto was going to be so profitable in the long run anyway that Bayer could afford to take these losses? Because if it’s the latter case, and Bayer was willing to just absorb these legal blows, that suggests Bayer is expecting the joint Bayer/Monsanto behemoth to be incredibly profitable in the future, which, in turn, implies that Bayer was expecting Bayer/Monsanto to have an even larger grip on the global agricultural markets than it already has.
And that’s all why the question of “what was Bayer thinking when they made this purchase?” is a rather ominous one for not just Bayer’s shareholders but everyone else too.

The German tabloid Bild just reported on the Nazi history of the family behind JAB Holdings. Surprise! It turns out Albert Reimann Sr. and Jr. were big time Nazis and the company employed forced labor. The report found that French and Russian prisoners of war were used in the family’s factories and private villas during WWII. Reimann Jr. once complained to the mayor of Ludwigshafen that the prisoners weren’t working hard enough. Reimann Sr. and Jr. were also big anti-Semites and supporters of Adolf Hitler and Sr. donated to the SS as early as 1933.
The Reimann family, currently the second wealthiest in Germany, actually commissioned a historian in 2014 to investigate the family’s ties to the Nazis. That work is still ongoing and wasn’t part of this report so it sounds like there might be even more Nazi revelations on the way. As family spokesman Peter Harf put it, “It is all correct...Reimann Senior and Reimann Junior were guilty. The two men have passed away, but they actually belonged in prison.”:

The German family whose holding company owns controlling stakes in companies such as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Panera Bread, Pret a Manger and Einstein Bros. Bagels profited from the horrors of the Nazi regime, according to a bombshell report in a German newspaper.
The tabloid Bild, one of Germany’s most popular papers, reported that Albert Reimann Sr. and Albert Reimann Jr., whose family backs JAB Holdings, had significant links to the Third Reich.
JAB Holdings is a privately held conglomerate that has investments in a wide portfolio of global companies, among them Peet’s Coffee, Keurig Green Mountain and Dr Pepper-Snapple. It acquired Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, which owns three national bagel chains — Einstein Bros., Noah’s New York Bagels and Manhattan Bagel — in 2014.
The report found that Russian civilians and French prisoners of war were used as forced laborers in the family’s factories and private villas around World War II, when it was involved in chemicals-related manufacturing mostly for the food industry, according to Deutsche Welle.
“It is all correct,” family spokesman Peter Harf, who is one of two managing partners of JAB Holdings, told Bild. “Reimann Senior and Reimann Junior were guilty. The two men have passed away, but they actually belonged in prison.”
The two men died in 1954 and 1984, respectively.
Other disclosures in the report include revelations that the two men were anti-Semites and avowed supporters of Adolf Hitler, and Reimann Sr. donated to the paramilitary SS force as early as 1933, according to Deutsche Welle.
Reimann Jr. once complained to the mayor of Ludwigshafen, where the family had an industrial chemicals company, that the French prisoners of war weren’t working hard enough, Deutsche Welle reported.
The report was a reminder of the way that some private businesses that are willing to put moral and human rights concerns aside are able to profit from the repression of fascist regimes. Many German companies have reckoned with histories of collaboration with the Nazi regime, among them: Hugo Boss, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and others.
Harf told Bild that the company plans to give about $11 million to charity after learning of the family’s history, the AFP reported. He said that the family had been looking into its past and in 2014 commissioned a historian, Paul Erker of Munich University, to study its ties to the Nazi regime, a work that has yet to be completed after more than four years. Harf said that the family plans to release more information about that study when it is done.
In an email, Erker confirmed that he was investigating the company’s history during the Nazi era.
“It is about an overall story also in the industry context, but in which the subject of forced labor plays a central role,” Erker said. “The mandate includes absolute scientific independence and unrestricted access to files, including the Benckiser Archive and family records. I ask for your understanding that I cannot provide any information on the details and results of the ongoing project.”

JAB Holdings was founded in the 1820s by Johann A. Benckiser, according to CB insights, and now serves as the “investment vehicle” for the Reimann family.
It holds stakes in companies behind brands such as Mucinex, Woolite and Durex condoms, according to CB Insights, and is a majority shareholder of the beauty product company Coty. In recent years, its aggressive moves to expand beyond the world of household goods have drawn attention, particularly in the world of coffee and baked goods. And this incredible family wealth, along with the family’s extensive secrecy, raises obvious questions about how this Nazi past may have played into the accumulation of such wealth. Of course, that turns out to include the use of prisoner of war forced labor. It’s one of the more shocking findings, along with the revelation that Reimann Sr and Jr were both avowed supporters of Hitler and Sr. donated to the SS as early as 1933:

The report found that Russian civilians and French prisoners of war were used as forced laborers in the family’s factories and private villas around World War II, when it was involved in chemicals-related manufacturing mostly for the food industry, according to Deutsche Welle.
“It is all correct,” family spokesman Peter Harf, who is one of two managing partners of JAB Holdings, told Bild. “Reimann Senior and Reimann Junior were guilty. The two men have passed away, but they actually belonged in prison.”
The two men died in 1954 and 1984, respectively.
Other disclosures in the report include revelations that the two men were anti-Semites and avowed supporters of Adolf Hitler, and Reimann Sr. donated to the paramilitary SS force as early as 1933, according to Deutsche Welle.
Reimann Jr. once complained to the mayor of Ludwigshafen, where the family had an industrial chemicals company, that the French prisoners of war weren’t working hard enough, Deutsche Welle reported.

Bill Gates has claimed that the US needs to have 10 more weeks of shutdown to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
Writing in an op-ed for The Washington Post, Mr Gates said the country needs to unite around an approach in order to be successful.
Each state offers different advice and only five have stay-at-home orders in place, meaning residents can only leave the house for essential needs.
Mr Gates thinks this needs to change: “First, we need a consistent nationwide approach to shutting down. Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties haven’t shut down completely,” he wrote.
“In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals.”
Mr Gates added that “any confusion about this point will only extend the economic pain, raise the odds that the virus will return, and cause more deaths”.
The co-founder of Microsoft also argued that the amount of testing should increase, and praised New York’s responses to the virus, where they have increased their testing capacity to 20,000 people a day.
He praised Seattle’s self-swab testing, which means patients avoid the risk of infecting a medical professional, and wrote: “I hope this and other innovations in testing are scaled up across the country soon”.
Mr Gates also advocated for a vaccine to be developed within 18 months and praised the government for making deals with companies to prepare for manufacturing.

“It’s a great sign that the administration made deals this week with at least two companies to prepare for vaccine manufacturing. I hope more deals will follow,” he wrote.

Dr Fauci told CNN: “You know, the tension between federally mandated versus states’ rights to do what they want is something I don’t want to get into ... But if you look at what’s going on in this country, I just don’t understand why we’re not doing that.”
