CAMILLA Parker Bowles’ friends have made illustrious claims that the Duchess revelled in her royal status before meeting Prince Charles, an explosive tell-all book reveals.

The Duchess of Cornwall’s ancestors and relatives have been close for centuries, beginning with Arnold Joost Van Keppel, a Dutch nobleman who accompanied of Orange to Britain in 1688, and was created the first Earl of Albermarle in 1696. Alice Keppel, Camilla’s great grandmother and the notorious mistress of King Edward VII, had been Camilla’s role model as a child. In “The Duchess of Cornwall: Camilla’s Story and Secrets”, it revealed that Camilla took pride in her royal ancestry.

Fellow pupils at the aptly named Queen’s Gate boarding school near Kensington Palace remember 10-year-old Camilla waltzing into class and grandly ordering the other children to bow before her.

According to the author Jessica Jayne, “She wasn’t shy about telling her friends about Alice Keppel. She’d say 'my great grandmother was lover of the king. We’re practically royalty'."

Camilla was said to been "in awe" of her great-grandmother.

"Camilla saw how you could be a successful support to someone in an exposed public position. She learned a great deal from [Alice], and was able to enact it for herself," says royal writer Christoper Wilson.
According to the book, the author claims Camilla inherited an even-tempered personality from her great grandmother that many men found attractive.

While Alice had the "sexual morals of an alley cat" and "sexual faithfulness to her husband wasn’t a value to her", according to historian Victoria Glendinning.

In her time, Alice rocked Edwardian society with three pregnancies by three different men. She had two daughters – Violet, the daughter of Lord Grimthorpe, who designed Big Ben and Sonia.

Though she was showered with gifts by the King, her time in high British society came to an end with Edward VII's death in 1910.

Cast out of her former circles, her last home was the Ritz Hotel where she lived until her death of cirrhosis of the liver on September 11, 1947 – just seven weeks after her great granddaughter Camilla came into the world.

When Camilla grew into a young woman she met and became involved with the great-great grandson of her great grandmother’s most famous patron, Prince Charles.

However, Charles was urged against settling down with Camilla, so she instead married a cavalry officer named Andrew Parker Bowles.

Unlike her famous ancestor, the Duchess of Cornwall eventually married her lover, the Prince of Wales.

A distant relative of Camilla Parker Bowles has become the first person to win £1 million on Chris Tarrant's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Judith Keppel is descended from Alice Keppel, the mistress of Edward VII and the great-grandmother of the Prince of Wales's companion, Camilla Parker Bowles. The link makes the two women cousins.

Ms Keppel, 58, collected her million-pound prize on Sunday, although the episode will be screened tonight.

When she first sat in the contestant's chair on Saturday night Ms Keppel was described as a "gardener from Fulham". Keppel is the family name of the Earl of Albemarle.

Ms Keppel was married to the Mayfair art dealer Desmond Corcoran until 1980, when she reverted to her maiden name. In 1985 she married scriptwriter Neil Shand.

The timing of the big win guarantees a major ratings coup and has provoked stunned reactions from rival BBC programme chiefs, who had expected to win a huge audience for the final episode of One Foot In The Grave and the death of Victor Meldrew. The two shows both go out at 9pm.

Cynics were asking whether the tension had been deliberately cranked up in recent weeks to culminate in the million-pound payout at this key time.

Earlier this month, solicitor and mother-of-two Kate Heusser, 44, became only the second contestant to win £500,000 on the show. She missed making her million by declining to answer one question.

Ms Keppel faced an agonising three-minute advert break between giving her final answer to the last question and learning if she was right.

She said: 'I was fairly sure of it. When the choices came up then I knew it, but there's something about the huge sum of money which sows a lot of doubt in your mind.'

Tarrant said Ms Keppel was the calmest person in the whole studio. He added: 'Judith is the sixth person who sat in this chair and I thought you could, and should have won a million, but she gave it that extra push.'

Ms Keppel, who has eight 'O' levels and two 'A' levels, said: 'I've always felt about this show that you can do it - anybody can do it.

All through this thing my luck was running.'

Until now the only millionaires the British version of the show has produced have been the people behind it. Tarrant himself has a £1 million deal to present the programme.

Celador Productions, the company that makes Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, owns the rights to sell the format internationally and has reaped a fortune for its creators David Briggs, 50, Steve Knight, 40, and Mike Whitehill, 40.

The three men worked together in the Eighties, coming up with ideas for Tarrant's breakfast radio show on Capital FM. In America, where the programme was bought by the ABC network, it is watched by more than 25 million viewers.

Prince Charles could be barred from marrying Camilla in a civil ceremony, legal experts have warned.

Plans have been drawn up for the couple to marry in a low-key ceremony at Windsor Castle, followed by a chapel blessing.

But in a BBC Panorama television special last night, family law experts said there were "serious doubts" over the couple's wedding plans, arguing that the 1836 Marriage Act barred the royal family from civil marriages.

"I was very surprised when I heard this was proposed," said Stephen Cretney, Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.

"The legislation which governs civil marriage in England is expressed not to apply to members of the royal family.

"There is no statutory procedure whereby members of the royal family can marry in a register office."

Were the couple to wed under current legislation, Dr Cretney said the Prince of Wales would not be legally married and Camilla would not be his wife.

"This would be a very, very serious matter," he said.

Valentine Le Grice QC, a specialist in family law, said a "heavy question mark" hung over the proposed marriage.

"It would not be possible for them to get married in the way most people understand a register office marriage," he said. "It is not open to the two of them to follow the normal procedures of a registry marriage."

Clarence House said it had taken advice from four independent legal experts and said there was nothing in law which would prevent Charles and Camilla getting married.

The warnings came as it was revealed today that Camilla could still become Queen if public opinion swings in her favour.

Mrs Parker Bowles will be the first Princess Consort, reflecting the huge public opposition to her becoming Queen.

But senior courtiers admitted that they had deliberately left the possibility of her becoming Queen open if there is a change in the public mood.

"When the time comes, which we hope is a long way off, an option would be to reflect the mood in the country at that time," a senior aide to the Prince of Wales told The Times.

Yesterday Charles and Camilla attended a church service near the Prince's Highgrove home, joining a congregation of 34 people in St Lawrence's Church in Didmarton, Gloucestershire.

They appeared not to have decided how to spend St Valentine's Day today.

Asked if they had any plans, Mrs Parker Bowles said: "Not as yet." The Rev Christopher Mulholland said there was a great sense of goodwill in the church as Charles and Camilla took their seats.

"I prayed for their happiness," he said.

Charles, 71, who has recently recovered from coronavirus, and the Duchess of Cornwall, 72, are sitting side by side holding Camilla’s pet dogs in the portrait. The photo was taken at their Scottish residence Birkhall on Wednesday morning, the day before their wedding anniversary.

It is the first time the couple have been pictured together since the prince caught Covid-19.

They were reunited on Monday after Camilla came out of 14 days of self-isolation.

In the photo, which was taken by a member of staff, the couple are posing in the front porch with Jack Russell Terriers Bluebell and Beth.

Camilla, who has Bluebell on her lap, is casually dressed in jeans, a pink shirt, a blue jumper and navy boots.

Charles, in a blue shirt, navy jacket, green trousers and suede loafers, has Beth in his arms.

The dogs were rescued by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, of which Camilla is patron.

In the past, Camilla has said of Beth and Bluebell: "They are family, friends and ever-faithful companions and, just like anyone else with a passion for dogs, I can't imagine life without them."

Any private celebrations for Charles and Camilla’s crystal anniversary are likely to be low key amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The Queen, 93, and Prince Philip, 98, are social distancing at Windsor Castle.

Meanwhile, Prince William, Kate and their three children are staying at Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

It comes after Charles spent seven days self-isolating following his coronavirus diagnosis on March 25.

Camilla, who tested negative for the virus, isolated for two weeks in keeping with Government advice.

Charles and Camilla, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, spent their honeymoon at Birkhall after their wedding on April 9 2005.

The couple, whose romance has spanned decades, wed in a civil ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall followed by a blessing in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

In the 1990s, Camilla was blamed for the breakdown of Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana.

But 15 years on she is one of the most senior female members of the Royal Family.

Earlier this week, Camilla thanked thousands of volunteers who have signed up to help the NHS through the coronavirus crisis.

And the duchess chatted on the phone to Doris Winfield, 85, from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, who has spent the last two weeks self-isolating.

Ms Winfield said the chat with Camilla "meant the world to me", adding: "I've been incredibly lonely over the last couple of weeks and it was wonderful to talk to her.

"We talked about life in isolation and shared hobbies, she was very interested in my family and how I was coping without them. It's really cheered me up."

Last Friday, Prince Charles opened the new NHS Nightingale hospital in London via video link.

He hailed the temporary facility at the ExCel centre, which was transformed in just over a week, as a "practical message of hope" for coronavirus patients during a "time of national suffering".
